"Explain yourself," Olivia snapped at Tornado.
Tornado wanted to disappear into thin air. She's seen Olivia angry before but never this angry and never this furious.
Olivia had come back to Sodor the second she had heard of what had happened.
She'd already chewed out Sir Topham for letting Diesel 10 onto the Island and had been both furious and heartbroken when she had seen the state that Green Arrow was now in.
Not only had his boiler had failed catastrophically and the casting on his cylinder had cracked. The NRM couldn't restore Scotsman and Arrow at such a cost so it was unlikely that Arrow was going to run in the near future if ever.
Tornado didn't say anything for the longest time, unable to even start explaining as Olivia started tapping her foot impatiently.
Finally Tornado mumbled out a very small, "I'm sorry, Ms Olivia."
"Is that all? You're not going to explain how your reckless behaviour and stupidity almost cost Green Arrow his life?!" She demanded angrily. "His boiler has failed and now he requires a major overhaul which we cannot give him! He was almost scrapped Tornado!"
"He saved me," Tornado said quietly.
"What was that?"
"He saved me!" Tornado cried out suddenly. "That man threw explosives in the mine and it caused the ground to cave in. I almost fell in but Green Arrow saved me!"
Tornado looked away from Olivia, tears welling in her eyes.
"He saved me despite the fact he knew I hated him!" Tornado sobbed. "Ms Olivia! Please I didn't mean to get anyone hurt I was just so angry and I didn't listen to anyone and I-"
"Stop."
Tornado stopped running her mouth, the only sounds that could be heard was her sobbing.
"I am very disappointed with you Tornado, as is the A1 Trust," Olivia said sternly. "You will not be taking the Flying Scotsman back to the mainland, another engine will be coming from the mainland to do so."
Tornado made her boiler feel heavy. But she accepted it, she knew it had been coming. The Flying Scotsman had been extremely angry with her, even more so when he had seen the state Green Arrow was in, his boiler having failed and completely unconscious.
She'd never seen Scotsman so upset or distressed as he had when he had laid eyes on Arrow.
He'd looked truly hurt and it had been her fault. He hadn't spoken to her since which drove home how furious the famous engine was with her.
"The A1 Trust has seen fit to keep you on Sodor as a replacement for Green Arrow as punishment for your behaviour," Olivia continued. "You will be doing his work and you are not to engage in any communication with Green Arrow at all. They will be asking another engine to be at Prince of Wales' debut."
"Yes ma'am," Tornado said quietly, completely defeated.
"You are one of the best engines I have ever worked with Tornado," Olivia frowned at her. "I cannot believe you would have done something this idiotic or stupid."
"I'm sorry ma'am."
Olivia sighed sadly putting her face in her hands. She shook her head frustrated before turning heel and walking away without another word.
Tornado simply sat there in the Vicarstown Sheds, her mind racing with a million regrets and thoughts, her boiler feeling numb and empty.
"Good morning Mr Flying Scotsman sir," the small purple engine chirped as he rolled into Ulfstead Castle. "Sir Topham Hatt sent me to pick up Lydia today."
"You don't have to call me sir, little Ryan," the Scotsman smiled at the tank engine. "Scotsman or Scott is just fine."
"Oh um, alright then sir- I mean Scotsman sir! No I mean-" Ryan fumbled over his words before turning bright red in embarrassment.
"It's alright Ryan," the Scotsman chuckled in good humour. "Don't worry about it. Lydia is over by the private berths getting a final inspection. You can collect her when one of the guards calls you over."
Ryan gave a shy smile.
He'd spoken to his famous cousin several times yet he always found it nerve wracking. It was the same with Gordon or any big engine really. He just wasn't used to seeing many of them, especially ones as famous as Flying Scotsman.
"Alright then, I can do that!" He grinned and Scotsman returned it.
"That's the spirit Ryan," he laughed heartily. He then glanced around him. "Lydia will be staying here while I return to the mainland for my rebuild. Would you be so kind as to look after her while I'm gone?"
"Me? Look after Lydia?" Ryan stammered suddenly.
"You're the only engine on Sodor that Lydia approves of," Flying Scotsman pointed out. "And I trust you with her."
Truth be told, Ryan wasn't the only engine she approved of. She also approved of Green Arrow however… he wasn't going to be able to pull any trains in the future Scotsman reminded himself sadly.
"I'll look after her sir! You can count on me!" Ryan declared but then his face turned red again. "I mean Scotsman."
Scotsman only laughed warmly at him.
"I'm going to miss you when I leave cousin," he said and Ryan smiled back at him.
"I'm just glad I got to meet you," Ryan said.
"We'll meet again, I'm sure of it, I'll be around until the end of the week," the Scotsman grinned at him before moving off with a loud whistle. "Goodbye Little Ryan!"
"Goodbye Mr Flying Scotsman sir!"
Ryan felt bubbly and excited today. He loved pulling Lydia. He always treated her with the respect she deserved and in return she would always tell him stories, give him sage advice or sing with him in return.
As he moved to collect her he approached the berths and saw a large green engine sitting in one of the private berths, a huge scar across its face and visible damage on his boiler and cylinders. One of his cylinders had an enormous crack in it and said the engine simply sat sleeping and not moving as people around it were washing it down and inspecting it.
He saw the nameplate on its smoke box and realised that this was his cousin, Green Arrow. He sat there contemplating going up and introducing himself but his attention was called away by Lydia.
"Hello my dear Ryan!" She said sweetly and Ryan perked up at seeing her.
"Hello Ms Lydia, it's good to see you again," he beamed at her. "Flying Scotsman told me to look after you while he was gone."
"It is good to know that that man knows who to trust," Lydia said. "I simply will not allow any of those other rude and crass engines to pull me."
Ryan smiled at her. She was very demanding for a coach but she could also be very sweet and nice to him. She reminded him of a nicer Daisy in that respect.
Lydia saw Ryan's attention distracted by Green Arrow who sat there quiet and still.
"Alas poor Green Arrow," she said dramatically. "Damaged himself for that childish new engine, such a shame."
"Will he be alright?" Ryan asked worriedly. "His boiler's damaged. He doesn't look well."
"The dear thing needs a complete overhaul to work again but I doubt that the museum will be willing to pay for it. I think they're planning to make him part of the museum's new collection here," Lydia said sadly. "Such a shame too, he's one of the few Engines who knows how to treat a lady like me."
Ryan felt a sad sinking feeling in his boiler. He knew the engine wasn't at all liked by the other engines but it didn't change the fact that Ryan felt sorry for him.
As he pulled away with Lydia, his thoughts were consumed with his cousin's sad fate.
"The museum doesn't have enough to repair Green Arrow," Olivia lamented sadly. "The best we can do is do cosmetic work and put him in the new Sodor branch of the museum as the first piece in the collection."
Sir Robert looked distressed and Sir Topham put his head in his hands.
"He was my best worker," Sir Topham muttered angrily. "I don't think I've seen an engine work so hard to prove themselves. He was incredible."
"His class were highly prized as the most efficient workers," Sir Robert mused. "Their sensitivity to poor tracks kept them from being more widely used."
"Flying Scotsman offered to give up his rebuild for Green Arrow," Olivia said quietly. "He's extremely distraught at what happened. He's refusing to speak to Tornado. I think he's afraid of snapping at her."
"I don't blame him," Sir Robert said. "Tornado was extremely stupid and reckless that night."
"Could you use any money raised for Scotsman's rebuild?" Sir Topham suggested.
"No," Olivia said with a sigh. "Most of the money came from donors or investors with the goal of Scotsman's rebuild. To dishonour that would be inexcusable."
"Then I have another suggestion," Sir Topham said.
The two looked at him curiously although Olivia was crossing her arms and looking at him with an intense glare.
"Sell Green Arrow to the North Western Railway," Sir Topham said and Olivia looked incredulous. "Like Scotsman's original suggestion."
"Sell him? He's part of the National Collection!"
"He still will be, just under a private owner," Sir Topham pointed out. "He'll be the face of the Museum's Sodor Collection as well as a still working exhibit. We have the money to repair him but we can't touch him if he's not owned by us."
"Why not just give the Museum the money?" Olivia pointed out.
"How would that look to the North Western's board and investors? Sinking hundreds of thousands into an engine we don't own, yes, you loaned him to us but we don't hold responsibility for his maintenance costs," Sir Topham Hatt said.
Sir Robert and Olivia glanced at each other.
"If the North Western Railway were to own him he would be able to run again," Sir Robert pointed out. "He'd be safe and protected."
"You say that like he wasn't just almost scrapped," Olivia snapped and Sir Topham frowned and crossed his arms.
"That was entirely the fault of Tornado," Sir Robert cut in. "And that diesel slipped through because it knew how overworked and busy the railway was and was able to sneak past because Sir Topham was so desperate for engines."
Olivia threw her hands up with an exhale of frustration.
"It's up to the board and Stainer as well what we do with Arrow but, I have my misgivings," she finally said.
"Well, hopefully this works and you'll find confidence in us," Sir Topham smiled at her.
Olivia frowned but said nothing more, doubt clearly in her eyes.
Bittern had been called in to take Tornado's place to bring Flying Scotsman back to the mainland.
He'd arrived a few days early as his owner wanted to capitalise on the steam rail tourism that Sodor had. It had taken some wrangling but Bittern had managed to score a day pulling the Wild Nor Wester much to the complaint of Gordon.
He giggled gleefully as Gordon was told and subsequently hurled insults the Bluebirds way when Sir Topham and Bittern's owner had left.
"You're worse than Spencer!" Gordon snapped and Bittern laughed at him. "You and your overhyped class of 'toasters'."
"Yes I am!" He jeered to which Gordon pouted. "Besides, I haven't pulled an express in a long time, it'll be good to stretch the wheels. This toaster gotta bake some bread yes?"
"But Toaster's don't bake bread, they toast it," Percy said, very confused from his berth earning him an eye roll from James.
"Aren't you supposed to be sleeping up at Ulfstead Castle?" Gordon grumbled at the A4 who was practically bouncing on his wheels in excitement.
He stopped and frowned at Gordon's words.
"I would but Scott's being extremely touchy," Bittern said. "I thought it would be best to leave him alone until morning."
"He's still upset over what happened to Green Arrow," Emily said and Bittern became still and quiet.
"What happened to him exactly?" Bittern asked. "No one on the mainland knows for sure, we've just heard rumours."
"Some people tried to scrap him," Thomas said upset. "They hijacked him and took him in to the mine. Tornado went to rescue him but she almost fell down a mine shaft. Green Arrow managed to rescue her but his boiler ruptured and he cracked his cylinder."
"They say he's going to be turned into an exhibit if they don't find funds for him," Edward said. "Such a shame, he was one of the hardest workers on this railway."
"Scotsman's really struggling to come to terms with it, he won't talk to Tornado," Gordon said quietly. "Mainly because she was the one who caused Green Arrow to be hijacked."
"She what?!" Bittern suddenly exclaimed in shock.."I knew Tornado had a grudge against Arrow but I didn't think she'd act on it."
"It wasn't intentional on her part I don't think," Gordon put forward. "She was angry and not thinking straight."
"Rebecca says that she's crying herself to sleep every night at Vicarstown Sheds," Emily said sadly. "She's really upset and depressed with what happened. Rebecca thinks that there's more to it."
Bittern was silent for a long while.
"She was depressed on the mainland too," he finally said. "Especially after Rebecca and Olivia left to work on Sodor. She was getting uncharacteristically angry and aggressive. Pendennis thinks she's lonely. I imagine that Scotsman giving her the cold shoulder is a devastating blow to her."
"Didn't Tornado and Green Arrow used to be friends?" Henry asked. "I remember her talking about it. Maybe what happened to Arrow is also upsetting her."
An uncomfortable silence hung over the sheds.
"Has… Arrow woken up yet?" Edward asked tentatively.
"A few times," Gordon said. "But every time he doesn't seem lucid or it's only brief."
"I hope they find his voice box," Thomas said hopefully.
"Even if they put it back it may not work properly," Henry warned Thomas. "It might not even work at all."
"Poor Bastard," Bittern said offhandedly. "Never liked the guy but, he didn't deserve that."
Tidmouth Sheds fell eerily quiet as the engines fell into an uneasy slumber.
