Snow White

It has been a long day for the BAU team, they just got back from an eight-day case this afternoon and now Chief Strauss also wants them to finish their reports this evening. It is the evening of the eleventh of November and JJ just wants to go home to prepare for her son's birthday party. She got a call from Will in the afternoon, apparently Henry finally asked him for a present two days before. He wishes that Snow White could come to his birthday, his current favourite character. Will has been trying to organise a performer ever since, but it was too short notice for most of the companies and the one who had agreed to come had to cancel because their performer was ill.

After finishing her report, JJ goes to Garcia's cave in despair. "Penelope?" "JJ come in." Garcia turns around in her office chair and looks at her friend: "JJ, what's wrong? Weird feeling that your son turns four tomorrow and you're old?" "Gee thanks Garcia, no he wanted Snow White to come to his birthday but almost all the companies cancelled and the one that said yes, their Snow White is sick." With a sad look Garcia replies, "Oh no, my poor prince." "I know he didn't wish for anything until he asked for Snow White two days ago", JJ says with tears in her eyes. "That sucks sweetie, but we'll see tomorrow that he still has fun and has a great day. Now dry your tears and go home to your prince and king before the Wicked Witch of the West comes with a new task."

Meanwhile, the others have also finished their reports and are gradually making their way home. So it happens that Emily overhears JJ and Garcia's conversation and instead of saying goodbye to Garcia as usual, she simply sends her a message that she had to hurry home. On her way home, she goes to a costume shop, but they only have slutty Snow White. The salesman is so pushy and desperate to sell her this costume that she eventually just ignores him, gives him the finger and walks out of the shop. It's the same in the next four shops, except that they don't have a pushy salesperson, but in the last one there is a nice student who gives her the tip to go to the shop where her theatre group from university rents their clothes. With the address and a huge thank you to Sabrina, the student, she drives to the address.

Although it is already 8 pm, Sabrina told her to ring the bell and tell the man who opens the door that she sent her. Emily does so and a man in his 70s opens the door: "How may I help you?" Emily explains the situation, that the son of her friend and colleague has a birthday tomorrow and wanted Snow White to come to his birthday party, that the actress is ill, that she has already been to five shops and they only have Snow White for adult audiences and that Sabrina sent her. He smiles at her and says, "Come along, then, my child." Together they go into the shop next to the front door. Inside, Emily looks around and sees really beautiful and old costumes: "Wow, your shop is fantastic, I feel like I'm in the archives of an opera." The old man laughs and replies, "Maybe that's because I have half my inventory from a closed opera." After a few more steps he notices that Emily has stopped and is standing in front of a dress. Quietly she asks: "This is the dress of Marguerite de Valois the Queen of Navarre from the play 'Les Huguenots', isn't it?" The old man looks at her in amazement: "Yes, you know the play?" Emily nods and explains that she was in the play with her grandfather at the Paris Opera. The old man is thrilled and asks: "Alors vous parlez français?" Emily smiles at him and replies: "Oui, mon grand-père a vécu dans les Alpes françaises après sa retraite, jusqu'à sa mort il y a sept ans." "Je suis originaire de Poligny mais ma famille a déménagé en Amérique quand j'avais 14 ans. Vous pouvez revenir une fois et nous parlerons de la France et de l'opéra." "Avec Plaisir."

("So, you speak French?" "Yes, my grandpa lived in the French Alps after he retired until he died 7 years ago." "I'm originally from Poligny but my family moved to America when I was 14. You're welcome to come back sometime and we can talk about France and opera." "I'd love to.")

After he gives Emily the dress and she tries it on, since she couldn't imagine fitting into it, the two stand in front of the store and Emily says, "It was really great meeting you and I would take you up on the offer to visit her and her store. My name is Emily, by the way." The man laughs and says, "I'd be happy to, my name is Jaques." They shake hands and Emily drives home.

The next morning, JJ and Will get up around 7 to shower and then prepare a birthday breakfast for Henry. They put all the presents on the table in the living room, blow up balloons and go to wake him up around 8. With a cake and four lit candles, they go into his room and sing 'Happy Birthday'. The four-year-old blows out the candles, squeezes his eyes shut and makes a wish. Afterwards, he stares at his parents with shining eyes and raises his hand, showing them four fingers, "Now I'm this old, right?" Will and JJ laugh and answer the question in the affirmative. Together they go downstairs and have breakfast.

After, Henry gets to watch a movie while Will prepares everything for the barbecue in the garden and JJ makes salads in the kitchen. Then the parents set the dining room table and a smaller table for the kids. Faster than expected, it is half past eleven and the family quickly gets dressed before the first guests arrive. Just as JJ is putting on her makeup, the doorbell rings and she calls out, "Will, make sure Henry doesn't open the door without knowing who it is." She hears the door open and the voice of Alice's mother and before she gets downstairs, Jacob and his father are also at the door. Together the parents say goodbye and the children go into the living room where there are some of Henry's toys. Gradually all the children arrive and at half past twelve the first of the team in the form of Hotch and Jack. One by one, Morgan, Rossi, Spencer and Penelope arrive. Penelope is carrying a huge bag full of presents. After a raised eyebrow from JJ, she replies fast that they are from her and Spencer.

The men walk out by the grill and JJ watches the kids with Penelope, "Has Henry asked about Snow White yet?" JJ nods and says, "Yes, we explained to him that there is an emergency in the kingdom, and she is needed there. Amazingly, he understood." Penelope smiles and replies, "He's a great kid. … Where is Emily? She's not usually late, is she?" JJ shrugs and is about to answer when her cell phone makes a sound. She reads the message and then looks at Penelope with a puzzled look. " She just texted me that she's leaving now, she couldn't get her hair done and that Henry should open the door for her when she rings." The two friends look at each other strangely when they hear Morgan's voice: "What's wrong with you guys?" All the men except Will stand behind them and JJ shows them Emily's message. A strange expression now shows on their faces as well, but before they can say anything about it, the doorbell rings. JJ tells Henry to see who it is and then open the door if it is Emily.

But when Henry looks through the window next to the door, he shouts, "Snow White!" and yanks the door open. To the amazement of all the adults, Snow White is really standing in front of the door. Emily has really done a great job, she has turned her ebony black hair into a bob and has a red bow in her hair, her eyelashes look even longer than normal, her pale skin is even paler, like snow and her lips are made up blood red.

Emily kneels in front of Henry and asks, "You must be Henry, the birthday boy?" The latter nods and has a traveling grin on his face. "Happy birthday to you! I'm very honoured that you sent me an invitation." Henry hugs her and asks, "I thought there was an emergency in your kingdom, and you couldn't come?" Emily looks briefly at JJ who nods. "Well, that's true, but luckily my prince is able to sort this out with the help of the dwarves." Henry breaks free from the embrace and takes her hand, "Come I'll show you our house and introduce you to my guests."

Henry pulls her along and that's when she notices all the children looking at her and realizes Jack recognized her. She gives him a quick wink but before either of them can say anything Henry says, "This is my mom, her name is Jennifer but somehow everyone just calls her JJ." Emily, of course, plays along and extends her hand, "It's nice to meet you JJ." So, it goes on with Spencer, Hotch, Morgan and finally Penelope, "This is Penelope my godmother, don't be surprised if she gives you a hug." Laughing, Emily and Penelope do just that and Emily whispers to her, "Jack recognized me, look he doesn't ruin the illusion." Before Penelope can answer, Jack pulls Emily out of the house to Will, "Daddy look, Snow White came after all! Snow White, this is my dad Will." The two also shake hands and Will says, "Thank you Snow White, for coming." Emily gets the message and winks at him.

As the two walk hand in hand back into the house Emily sees Hotch and Jack talking and Jack nods vigorously. Henry introduces her to all his friends and Jack, who plays along. Then Henry asks, "Will you play with us?" Emily smiles and nods, but that's when JJ comes over and says, "That'll have to wait until after dinner though, the barbecue is ready." Henry makes a face, but Emily quickly says, "Well, I guess we'll dine first and then all play together."

Much to Henry's dismay, Emily sits at the adults' table where she is now bombarded with questions and comments. "Woah one at a time! JJ start." "How did you know we didn't have a Snow White? Or that there was going to be a Snow White at all?" Emily looks at her a little guiltily, "Well, when I was saying goodbye to Garcia last night, I heard you guys and since it was already quarter past 7 pm and so I didn't know if it was even going to work out, I had to hurry. I went to five different stores where they only had slutty costumes on the side, and in the last one the student who works there gave me the address of someone I know with an old costume rental place, so I went there." "Pretty cool princess, which is even more fitting today than usual on the side," Morgan grins, "but just for the record, I wouldn't have minded a slutty Snow White either." Gracia slaps him on the chest and is surprised, well everyone is surprised as Hotch says, "I think she looks hot in that costume too." Emily cheeks turn red, and she looks at him in shock, "Thanks… I think," then turns to Ried, "Spence, could you open the corset for me while we eat? I don't have it pulled all the way tight but it's still distracting while sitting and eating..." Now it's Spencer's turn to get red in the face, but nonetheless he opens the ties of her corset and then widens it a bit. Rossi nudges his friend to stop staring at Emily's breasts and whispers, "Aaron... I think you should ask her" But before he can speak further Will says: "Thanks Emily! Really, he was brave and understanding this morning but it's great to see him so happy." JJ nods and looks at her friend happily. After dinner, JJ and Emily get up to collect the plates when Ruby, a friend of Jack remarks, "But you're a princess, you don't have to take the plates away." Emily smiles at her, "But I want to, I'm a guest here and I want to show my gratitude and even in my castle I do that because I think it's nice to help those I like." Immediately all the children get up with their plates and follow her into the kitchen and there is laughter at the adult table. The kids put their plates on the sink and run into the living room while JJ tightens Emily's corset again.

After that, Emily joins the kids in the living room, and they play all kinds of games. The team follows a while after, watching and talking. That's when Jacob asks, "What was played on your birthdays?" Emily looks around and answers, "Oh princesses' birthdays are pretty boring as a kid because a lot of attention is paid to behaviour and there was no playing." - All the adults realize that she is talking about her own birthdays- "But I was once invited to a birthday where I could only be Snow and not a princess. There we played great things, like 'Topfschlagen' translated into this language it would be pot banging." Noticing that the children are very interested, she turns to Henry, "Shall we play that?" He nods enthusiastically and Emily stands up, "How about you all and the men here make some room and I'll get everything we need with Jennifer?" While the kids do just that the three women go back into the kitchen, "JJ I would need a wooden spoon, a pot and a scarf. I'm sure you have a little candy for each child too?" JJ laughs and takes a pack of lollipops out of the cupboard and then the rest of the items as she says, "You're pretty great with them, you know that?" Garcia immediately gets into it, "Yeah I wish you had been at my birthdays as Snow White back in the day." The women make their way back to the living room and Emily says, "Gee thanks."

Once they are back in the living room a circle forms around Emily and they all look at her excitedly, that's when Spencer goes to grab a lollipop, but Emily quickly holds the package away. "Since Spencer wants a lollipop, he can serve as an example of how this works." -shocked, he looks at her- "Jennifer will you blindfold him please? Good now we hide the pot here in the room, but quietly and put a lollipop under it. After that, Jennifer spins Spencer around in a circle five times... good and now in crawling position Spencer and I'll put the spoon in your hand. Now you must crawl a bit at a time and try to hit the pot and we call outside when it crawls in the right direction like now 'warmer' and that again and again until it hits the wrong direction, then you call 'colder' and if you crawl even more in the wrong direction you call 'ice cold'. But now we're shouting what?" All the kids shout "Warmer!" and again until Spencer is close to the pot and that's when Emily says out loud, "And when you're so close you don't have to crawl anymore but just hit you shout 'hot'." Immediately all the children shout "Hot" and after a short while Spencer knocks on the pot, Emily takes off his blindfold and Spencer is allowed to take the lollipop out from under the pot. They play until all the kids have had their turn and then even Derek, Penelope, JJ and Snow White herself.

But then the doorbell rings and JJ looks at the clock, "Oh, that must be your parents." Will opens the door and the first parents come in, their kids immediately start talking and Emily is of course introduced to everyone, so with all the parents still coming. After the children have left Henry asks his mother quietly, "Mummy why didn't auntie Emmy come? I miss her." JJ looks around helplessly and Emily quickly replies, "Is that Emmy's name actually Emily and she works with your mommy?" Henry nods, "well then I have the answer." Henry looks at her in amazement, "Really?" "Yes, she was the only one I knew in the country here and I asked her if she could look after my carriage and horses. But she said she had to go to your birthday and so I told her that I had also been invited to your birthday and I could only come if someone would watch my carriage. She said that she would be happy to do it for you. But she'll be over in a little while to put you to bed." Henry replies, "That would be great, but then who will protect your horses." "Well, I have to leave right away, I have a very long way to go to get back to my kingdom." Henry hugs her and says, "Thank you for being there." Emily smiles at him, "Thank you for letting me be there. But before I go, I have one more gift for you." She hands him a package wrapped in a silk fabric. Henry unwraps it and sees two thick books, immediately Emily says, "This book has my story in it with lots of my friends. There were once two brothers, whose last names were Grimm, who traveled through the kingdoms and wrote down the stories of all those who were willing to tell them. In it you will also find the stories of my best friend 'Rotkäppchen (Little Red Riding Hood)', my favorite aunt 'Frau Holle (Lady/Miss Holle?)', 'Von einem, der auszog, um das Fürchten zu lernen (One who went out to learn to fear?)' and many others. The other book is by Hans Christian Anderson who did the same with other stories, for example 'The Princess and the Pea'. But now I have to go, or I will be late for the court meeting tomorrow." Emily says goodbye to everyone with a hug and kisses Henry on the cheek and leaves saying, "Maybe we'll see each other again sometime."

Emily changes in her car and calls JJ to tell her she needs to go in the back door to wash her face. After Emily takes off the dress and puts on black jeans and a red sweater she goes to the back of the house and into the kitchen where JJ is waiting for her. She quickly removes her makeup and washes her face and is about to go out the front door when JJ reaches into her hair and loosens the bow. Emily's hair falls open over her shoulders and with a smile the older woman walks around the house and rings the doorbell. Immediately Henry runs to the door and opens it after looking to see who it is, "EMMY!" Already wrapping his little arms around her legs, Emily bends down and lifts him up, "Hey Henry, Happy Birthday!" "Thank you and thank you for protecting Snow White's horses. But I'm glad you're here now, I have so much to tell you!" JJ interrupts the two, "Yeah but you do that while you get ready for bed. Say goodnight to the others." Emily wants to let him get on the floor, but Henry holds on and calls out to the group, "Good night, Emmy's going to put me to bed now." With that, he earns laughs and shakes of the head. Together they go up the stairs and Henry gets ready with Emily's help. At the bottom, Hotch asks around the room, "How did she change her clothes, take off her makeup, and put on new makeup so quickly?" JJ looks at him and says, "Emily's not wearing makeup right now." Hotch just looks at JJ, "Wow, she's beautiful." Again, everyone laughs, and Jack says, "Dad, you're embarrassing, everyone knows Emmy is pretty." To which Morgan just says, "I think our Snow White has a potential prince, Jack."

Upstairs with Henry and Emily, after the latter has recounted his complete day, putting on his pyjamas, brushing his teeth and now lying-in bed. "Jack, here's my other present for you." Emily hands him a package, which the boy didn't notice until then, and he opens it. Inside he finds inline skates and Emily says, "You can have your own adventures with these and send them to Snow in a letter or a picture." "Thanks Emmy, can you tell me a fairy tale to go to sleep?" Emily nods and grabs the storybook Will already put on the nightstand.
