Chapter Two: Friend to the Wilds
Hana and her mother followed the blood trail the deer's carcass left behind, following its upstream through the woods. Their canine companions were at their sides the entire time, looking out for any danger they may not see or smell. This chase led on for about ten minutes before the group found a cave nestled into the earth at the foot of a small hill. The cave smelled of the man, and the deer's body was laying on the ground where the man was skinning it. Beside him was the fox, sitting at his feet while it rested. Hana eyed the kit more, trying to find any markings that could resemble a species of foxes she might know from her studies of the wildlife in the Land of Fire. However, all she could gather was that it was a bright orange fox with a black tip at the end of its tail and ears. She sighed, not even more curious about this fox and the man.
Her mother, Tsume, was watching closely as she saw how expertly this man was skinning the deer, getting the entire pelt off the creature's body before sitting down with a knife in hand and cutting out any little pieces of meat left. When that was done he laid the hide down with fur facing down before going to a small barrel and taking out what smelled like salt and layered the inside of the hide with it. Tsume was interested in this, no one in the Elemental Nations, let alone ninja, really tanned and cured hide. She knew about it, of course, but never saw it done in action.
With the hide now being salted, he left it there for now and went back to the meat. When he brought his hatchet out he whistled. From the cave behind him came three large wolves. They were massive compared to her clan's ninken, at least dwarfing them by two feet in length and another foot in height. The wolves came to the deer, looking at the man. The man just chopped off a chunk of the ribs before nodding, letting the wolves have the rest of the deer before sitting down and skewing the ribs on a spittle over a fire pit.
The wolves dinned on the meat while the little fox woke from its nap and went to the man and went to sit on his shoulder. The man took the hatchet at his side and used a piece of flint he had in his pocket to send sparks into the dried leaves and grass he had under the logs he had positioned in the teepee shape. After a few strokes to the stone the sparks caught, causing the fire to start to grow, and not longer after the logs started to catch. He took a deep breath, putting the ribs over the fire and slowly rotating them as he looked about. To the girls' surprise, and their dogs, the man spoke up.
"For people who travel with hounds, you make your scent painfully obvious to smell. Come out of the brush and join me, your companion can take part of the deer. It should be large enough for all of them and my brothers to eat a decent dinner."
Hana and Tsume looked at each other, not too sure what to do now that they were caught. They were also a bit confused, Nords weren't known for kindness or hospitality.
"Mom, I think we should just go and eat with him. What's the worse that can happen?"
Tsume thought about it. "Hmm…alright, I suppose it's better than saying no and staying hidden. Alright, thanks, stranger!"
The two, along with their canines, came out of the forest's undergrowth, smiling friendly towards the man and the wolves. The wolves looked at the four new canines coming towards them. The three looked to the man who in turn nodded. The wolves looked to the dogs again before making way for the four of them to join in their meal.
Hana and Tsume sat across from the man, who now at closer inspection looked to be younger than they expected. "Huh, I never saw a Nord so young all on his own. Are you lost, kid?"
The Nord looked to Tsume, raising an eyebrow. "Do I look lost stranger?" He pointed to the armband he had around his left arm, a forehead protector of a Hidden Leaf shinobi wrapped around his bicep.
This made both girls gasp lightly. They knew Nords never properly joined the villages of the Elemental Nations. They always preferred to stick with their clans and warbands before even considering joining a foreign village.
Hana looked at him as he roasted the meat over the fire. "You're a part of the Leaf's ninja core? I thought Nords never joined a village. Isn't it some sort of disrespect to your clan?"
The man nodded but looked at her before he answered. "I would like to have your name before I tell you anything, stranger. It is only polite in this land to know one another's name before you talk, right?"
Both Hana and Tsume blushed a bit, they were being a tad rude not giving their names before asking their questions. Hana was quick to fix that, smiling softly at the boy across from her. "That is right. I am Hana Inuzuka and this is my mother Tsume Inuzuka."
The man nodded, bringing his attention back to the meat he was roasting. "I offer you my greetings, Hana and Tsume of the Inuzuka. My name is Fen Norung of the Norung Clan."
Tsume blinked, looking at him confused and a bit skeptical. "The Norung? The same clan that helped us with the Kyuubi all those years ago?"
Fen nodded, throwing some spices on the meat as it cooked. "Yes, I am the last of the clan. As for your question Hana, yes it is seen as dishonorable to abandon one's clan. But since my clan is nothing more than myself, I am free to go and fight for who I please. It is why the Hokage asked me to join one of his genin teams."
The girl nodded, her stomach growling lowly at the aroma the meat was giving off now that the seasoning was being added to it. "So you are a genin then?"
The Nord shook his head, taking the meat from the skewer and ripping the ribs into three with little effort. He offered a third to each of them and one to himself. "I refuse to be called the ranks of your village. I told the Hokage I will acknowledge anyone who calls me a ninja or anything associated with it. I am nothing more than a Shield Mate, be it one with no clan."
The three of them started to eat, a silence coming over them as the Inuzuka females tried to think of what to ask next. Tsume looked up from her meat, eyeing the boy behind the flames in front of her. "Why choose Konohagakure to fight for? Are you friends with the Hokage or one of the clans here?"
Fen shook his head again, swallowing a big bite of the meat before he spoke. "I am tied to this village specifically by blood. Apparently, I have blood shared with someone here, a leader. I am not sure who or which one, but I presume it to be the Fourth Hokage since I am told we share the same eyes and hair color."
"Are you claiming to be a descendent of the Fourth Hokage? That is quite a bold claim seeing as his wife never had children and we know that the fourth was an orphan with no ties to the Northern Realms." Tsume said, skeptical about the claim.
He just shrugged at her comment. "My mother told me I belonged to the blood of a man that was powerful in the Land of Fire, a leader of a village called the Hidden Leaf. Outside of that, I have no clue."
Hana spoke up next, swallowing the bite of the spiced meat she was slowly starting to enjoy the taste of. "Why not ask her more about it?"
Tsume gave her daughter a look that told her she just asked a stupid question. "Hana, did you not hear what he said before? He is the last of his clan!"
The younger Inuzuka covered her mouth with her free hand, bowed her head, and quickly apologized. "I am so sorry Fen! I didn't mean to offend or bring up anything!"
Fen just looked at her, giving a shrug. "Typically I would be angry that someone would ask about things with her, but I can't bring myself to get mad at you two. We share a bond even if we are not blood."
This time Tsume was one to ask another question. "A bond?"
The Nord nodded, smiling softly as he pointed to the canines now laying about against one another. A moment ago Fen's wolves were skeptical of the dogs, but now they seemed comfortable enough to rest with them. "We share a bond with the animals. Your clan specializes in your connection to your, what do you call them…ninken?"
The two girls nodded, listening on with interest as he continued. He smiled, tossing the small bits of ribs left to Kibi while keeping a bigger piece for him to gnaw on.
"I too share a bond, but on a wider spectrum. My clan called it the Will of Fenrir, the father of all wolves. Hence where my name Fen comes from."
Hana blinked, dropping her ribs on the ground at the mention of the name. "Fenrir? As in the colossus wolf of the Nords? The wolf that was said to eat the gods of your lands long ago?"
Fen perked up at this, raising an eyebrow once again at Hana. "You know of the tales of Fenrir?"
She nodded, smiling as she looked at him with a glee only an animal enthusiast could show. "Yes! I read all about the legends when I went on a mission to a trading port in the Land of Waves. There was a Nord shop there that sold some storybooks and other things about the creatures of your land!"
"Fenrir was said to be one of the children of Loki, your culture's god of trickery right? Well, he was the brother of another creature called Jormungandr, the World Serpent, and to a goddess name Hel, who was banished to a place your people call Helheim. Honestly, the culture and religion of your people are tricky to understand. There are so many weird tales and such that depict random things and like…"
Hana started going off on a tangent about the myths and legends of the Northern Realm, and all of it amazed Fen and Tsume. The Nord was awed by the fact someone in the Elemental Nations knew such much about their culture while Tsume was surprised that her daughter read any of that made of shit.
After finally ending her tangent she had to take a breath, which gave Fen a chance to tell her some more. "Yes, Fenrir is a child of the treacherous god Loki, and a sibling to Jormungandr and Hel. However, what you believe is a legend is a fact. If you have the time, I will tell you about it all."
The two looked at one another, having a silent conversation with their looks before giving each other a soft nod. "Alright, we can set up camp here with you if you don't mind."
Fen nodded, smiling as he brought his hands to the fires. "Well, to start it all off, we must talk about the misconception of the gods in my culture. We do not know where in the translation it got confused, but Loki and the others were actually a powerful clan we called the Aesir. There was Thor, the wielder of the legendary hammer Mjolnir that allowed him to manipulate the storms in the sky. He was the son of the leader of the Aesir, Odin. Odin was called the All-Father, and gave his eyes to learn the mysteries of the world and gain incredible insight and knowledge. He was the one that showed us the power behind Runes the power we Nords had in our blood. There was also Tyr, a man who was the personification of justice and warfare. There were many others, but I don't think you want to hear about all of them."
"Anyways, Loki was an Aesir. However, he did not believe in the iron will and the law of his fellow clansmen and women. It lead to him leading pranks and tricks on the Aesir to undermine their rule, hence why he was known for his trickery and lies. Though we do know not where they came from or who birthed them, Loki fathered three children. With the insight given to him, Odin knew that Loki's children would bring an end to the Aesir's rule over the Northern Realms. To prevent this Odin cast Jormungandr to encircle the land of the North where the massive serpent started to devour his own tail to keep himself forever gagged and unable to act. Hel was sent to look after the crypts of the fallen, which the myth of her going to Helheim came from. Lastly, Fenrir was to be chained."
He took a deep breath and looked at his audience. Everyone, including Kibi and the wolves, was listening to the tale. He smiled, looking at the fire as he continued.
"Fenrir never stopped growing, getting stronger and stronger every day as he ate more and more of the wildlife that nested in the forests around the Aesir's home: the large tree we called Yggdrasil. The hunger and power of the wolf made it difficult to contain the beast, which caused the Aesir to craft special chains to bind him. The first chain was Leyding, which snapped with little effort from Fenrir's strength. The next was the chain called Dromi. Though the chain was twice as strong, the shackles still broke. This kept happening, every time Fenrir grew more suspicious of the Aesir's reasoning to bind him. They told him it was all to prove his strength since no other could break the chains they made. Finally, the Aesir stopped forging the bindings themselves and asked for help from the Dwarves. They were men of stout stature with ashen skin and beards that draped down to their knees. The Dwarves were known for their excellent craftsmanship and took the challenge to bind the ever-growing Fenrir. Through a method kept secret from them and the Aesir, they created a simple golden ribbon that would withstand the strength of Fenrir. This ribbon was called Gleipnir."
"However, Fenrir no longer trusted the kin of his father and refused to be bound unless one of the Aesir willingly brought their hand to his maw. No one but Tyr was brave enough to step forward, letting the wolf take the hand in his mouth while he was being bound. Fenrir buckled and strained against the mystical ribbon, but could not break it. Fenrir had felled for their tricks, and in turn bit Tyr's hand off. So, for what was said to be a hundred years Fenrir was tied in Gleipnir, waiting for the day he could break free and exact his revenge alongside his brother and sister on the Aesir."
With his story over Fen spit out the rib he had been chewing on, letting the bone settle in the dirt as he reached for his waterskin. He took a swig of the liquid before handing it to the awe-struck Hana and Tsume. The two were at a loss for words. It sounded like, to them, that these Aesir had some sort of bloodline that resulted in their gifts, but even then it was unique even among the unique. The two drank from the skin before handing it back to Fen.
"So, where is Fenrir now?" Tsume asked, now interested in this legendary wolf after hearing its tale of betrayal.
Fen frowned, and the wolves with their hounds brought their heads low. "Fenrir ended up breaking free from his constraints like it was foretold. He helped release his brother Jormungandr and his sister Hel soon after. The two started a devastating conflict called Ragnarok."
"Is that what happened that ended your clan..?"
Fen looked at Hana, seeing the interest and concern in her eyes. Fen just sighed, looking at Kibi. "Do you think them trustworthy?"
The Inuzuka looked at Naruto like he was crazy talking to the fox and expecting it to respond. So when the fox talked the two had their jaws hit the ground. "Yeah, I think that's okay Fen. The dogs like them, and they know loyalty and trust."
Fen nodded, turning back to Tsume and Hana with a smirk on his face at seeing their reaction. "Kibi says I can trust you, so I will."
He took another sip from the waterskin, quenching his parched throat from all the talking. He let out a satisfied sigh before continuing. "Yes, Ragnarok caused my clan, and many others, destruction. When Fenrir and his siblings broke free they sought help from the lesser clans of Norung, Hemring, and Solfrung. These three clans did not see them as the monsters the Aesir claimed them to be. They saw them as forces of nature to honor and respect. The Hemring worshipped Hel and practiced a method to raise their dead with the chakra in their remains. The Solfrung worshipped Jormungandr, and believed he was a creature of knowledge and pursued the life of learning the magics that the Aesir kept secret. Lastly was the Norung, my clan, who worshipped Fenrir and strived for kinship with all wildlife they could befriend. The three clans joined the side of the three betrayed children of Loki."
"The war lasted five months, where the clans fought hard at the side of their chosen allies. Odin brought his armies to the Norung and Fenrir, Thor brought his armies to the Hemring, and then Tyr brought his armies to the Solfrung. The battles that came from their campaigns cost hundreds of lives on both sides. Eventually, Fenrir, with the help of my clan and the Kyuubi, defeated Odin but at the cost of both great beasts becoming mortally wounded. The other battles were the same, with the Aesir being destroyed and the children of Loki gravely wounded. In an attempt to save their lives, and to ensure the survival of their clans' legacies, the leaders agreed to the plan the children offered. Each clan, offering the remaining lives of their people, used their souls as fuel to bind the three children into one of their members. Jormangandr was sealed into the daughter of the Jarl of the Solfrung, where she escaped by one of the few spawns on Jormungandr to another part of the Elemental Nations. The one to take in Hel was another girl, though a girl that Hel hand-picked to be her container. Lastly was Fenrir, who took inside the one with the strongest connection to the wilds. The last two both left on the same boat to the Elemental Nations, but a storm caused the girl to escape on the boat while the other fell overboard."
"Wait wait wait. You said that Kyuubi was there?!" Tsume shouted, making the others cover their ears at the high pitch. Fen looked at her, nodding.
"Yes, where do you think she went after my clan took her away from your village?"
"So wait," Hana cut into the conversation, looking at the Nord. "So the reason that no one could find the Kyuubi after your clan contained it was because they took it with him? Do you not understand how weak that made Konoha look without their tailed beast?"
Fen narrowed his eyes, and so did Kibi. "She belonged to no village or man, she belonged in the wilds where she was meant to be. She, along with the others, wouldn't be menaces to the villages if you lot would have just left them alone."
This took the two women back a bit. He had been warm and friendly towards them up until now. Tsume sighed, nodding her head. She hated to agree with him, but he was right.
Hana just looked away ashamed. Fen sighed, scratching the back of his head. "Anyways, there is only one member from each clan left and they hold the children inside them. I hope to meet them and go back to the Northern Realms to reclaim our rightful place and lands. Currently, the Northern Realms are in a bloody war due to the power vacuum the defeat of the Aesir left."
"A noble and honorable goal, perhaps we can…wait a minute. You said you were the last of your clan, right?" Hana asked, raising her eyebrow.
Fen nodded, knowing she was putting the pieces together. Tsume narrowed her eyes, understanding the line of thinking Hana was having.
"Your…your the container for Fenrir, aren't you?"
Fen chuckled, letting out a sign as he undid the leather strands keeping his tunic together. He pulled it away, revealing the design of a wolf's head biting at the sun on his stomach. "I am Fenrir's container, yes. He and I are actually close friends. He wishes for me to keep our connection a secret, but both he and Kibi seem to trust you. We just ask you to keep this all a secret, everything I told you tonight."
Hana gulped, looking at the markings on his stomach. She was fascinated by the depiction of Fenrir, but her eyes also wandered to the rather impressive physique of the wolf-giant's container. She didn't find much interest or desire for most of the boys in Konoha, but she seemed to be attracted greatly to him.
Tsume was in the same boat, not even ashamed the boy was young enough to be her son. She gave him a look over as he started to tighten the strings of his tunic, trying ti mentally implant the sight in her mind for a later night.
The two were so lost in their thoughts that they both forgot to ask one more important question.
"What happened to the Kyuubi?"
This made Kibi frown a bit, crawling up to Fen's lap and nestling herself there. She decided it would be up to her to explain.
"Kyuubi, my mother…she died…along with the rest of my litter. Odin took aim at us first during the fight, killing all of them but my thanks to Fen."
The two eyed Kibi some now, making the already depressed kit crawl deeper into her protector's lap. Fen brought a hand over her back, looking to the two who saw the defiant glare in his eyes. "She is not Kyuubi, and she never wants to be."
The two looked at the fox one more time before nodding, relaxing as they waited to listen to the rest. Fen sighed, petting Kibi to comfort her.
"Kibi is indeed the only living descendent of the Kyuubi. She and Fenrir found one another a desire to be taken. The mountains shook from their union, or at least that is what I am told…"
"Anyways, Kibi is part of Wolf-Giant and part Nine-Tailed Fox. She is the only one of her kind, and has been with me since I was young."
The two now looked at Kibi in a new light, feeling a bit of pity and resentment for their reactions. Hana went and kneeled before the two, making Kibi look at her as she curdled deeper into Fen's lap.
"Kibi, I am sorry for our reaction. We should have been more understanding and I apologize for that."
Tsume went to the kit too, smiling softly before attempting to reach and pet her. "Yeah, I'm sorry too. I didn't mean to act all feral for a second there. It's just your mother, well…she gives us a bad reminder of what happened here."
Kibi looked up at the hand Tsume offered, gently coming to it and letting her pet her. Hana smiled and joined in, both Inuzuka's finding that Kibi's soft was very soft. The two kept petting Kibi, neither woman seeing the blush on Fen's face from their hands being so close to his crotch.
The two ended up taking Kibi over to their spot, the fox finding the wild, spikey hair on Tsume's head quite comfortable and taking a nap. Tsume smirked, laying her head against the log she was sitting on prior as she too was getting sleepy.
Hana smiled, laying down on the same log. She looked to Fenrir, who was now talking to the wolves. The wolves didn't say anything back, only nodding their heads before going into the woods to protect the camp while he and the others slept. Fen sighed, bringing himself to rest on his own log that was covered in some sheep's wool. Hana saw the soft pelt and looked a bit jealous. Fen saw this, smirking and taking the wool off his log and handing it to her.
"Take it, you could need it more than me."
Hana blushed, taking the wool and thanking him with a smile. The wool smelled like him, and that only made the girl happier as she rested against it. She took in one more deep breath before letting herself fall asleep in the warmth of the fire. Her and her mother resting while Kibi slept on Tsume's head.
Fen chuckled at the sight, laying against his log with his back to the ground so he could look at the night sky. He took a deep breath, enjoying the view before closing his eyes to sleep. Or at least, that's what he wanted to do.
~~Fen's Mindscape~~
Fen had just closed his eyes only to open them again to be in the center of the lake that was his mindscape. He let out a sigh, slowly getting up and causing ripples in the still water. He looked up at the sky, seeing the blacked-out sun with its red flames engulfing its black mass.
"You know Fenrir, I would have liked to talk when I'm not trying to rest," Fen said with a bit of a chuckle. He turned around to see the massive, five-story-tall wolf. The coat of wolf was solid black, the only color coming from the glowing red lines where his bindings once restrained his body. His eyes were as red as the glowing markings, and the fangs as bright as the brightest star.
"Do not question when we talk, Fen. We need to discuss our current situation." Fenrir spoke in a low, booming voice as he circled around Fen.
Fen looked at the wolf, not a single ounce of worry or fear on his face as he kept a smile on the legendary wolf. "Yeah, I suppose that would be needed. Please don't make me kill those girls. They're pretty nice and cute."
Fenrir just smirked, shaking his head as he decided to sit in front of Fen. "No, I approve of them. They could make valuable mates for you in the future."
"Fenrir, you know that's not what a guy looks for!"
Fenrir just rolled his eyes, snickering at the boy's embarrassment. "Say what you will, you will need females like that when it comes time to breed and restore your pack. Anyways, we need to worry about the development of the old wolf you were talking with earlier."
"Oh, you mean the Hokage? So you're talking about being assigned a team?"
The great wolf nodded, his eyes narrowing at Fen as he spoke. "Being part of this team could be invaluable in our pursuit to find my kin's containers. I can not sense them anywhere near us, and that worries me. If the mortals have died, so has my brother and sister."
Fen sighed, looking up at the blocked sun and wondering. "Fenrir, should we even go back to the Northern Realms?"
Fenrir raised an eyebrow at the boy, his mind trying to comprehend what Fen was trying to get at. "Keep talking, boy."
Fen looked back to Fenrir, his eyes showing the thoughts running through his mind. "What if going back there only repeats the cycle that caused Ragnarok? What if we become the new Aesir and our children revolt after we trick them?"
The wolf had to think about it for a moment, thinking about Fen's words. "I can not give you an answer, Fen. Not now at least. Just work on finding the others, and save these thoughts for then."
Fen just nodded, taking a deep breath as he sat down to close his eyes again. Before he could go back to resting he heard Fenrir speak up once more.
"And remember to always be on the lookout. You know they still live."
Fen just nodded, taking a deep breath and speaking before he was taken in by his need for sleep. "Yeah, I know…the Vanir are still around…"
(Author's Notes)
So, I hope you are enjoying the lore im building up before getting further into the story. I tried to think of the best way to have the gods of Norse Mythology be a part of this story, and my solution was as you saw: the Aesir and Vanir are clans with Kekkei Genkai-like abilities. I am not going to get into the parents of the children of Loki, because to this day I still can't think of a concrete reason in the world of Naruto how two people give birth to a wolf or a big ass snake. Also, Sleipnir will likely -not- be in this fanfic for the fact of how he was made in Norse Mythology. Anyways, that's all for this chapter. Thanks for reading!
