~ Some years later ~
"What's the sitch, Wade?"
"You won't believe who has been spotted diving in and out of jewelry shops in Milan!"
"Cut with the suspense, Wade. Who is it?"
"Drakken!"
"You sure, Wade? Beside that one appearance of Shego in Rome, I have not heard anything about them in years."
"Is there another blue-skinned man on this planet, Kim?"
"So what is he doing there?"
"Just goes in and then leaves like five minutes later and goes into the next one."
"You think, he is casing the shops?"
"What else could he possibly be doing there, Kim?"
"I'll be there in fifteen. That new flying car the twins made me is really top notch. Like a rocket!"
…..
Kim saw Drakken right away. He was practically glued to the display, his blue nose right at the glass. And leaving his fingerprints all over the case since he was not wearing gloves. Now what's up with that? Also… was that a tattoo on his ring finger? Of intertwined vines? And he was wearing a jumper?
Kim decided to move the situation along. "Do you have interest in anything in particular?"
"Yes… Do you have black diamonds? Three to be exact."
"What could you need black diamonds for?" What diabolical plot was he orchestrating now?
Her rude response must've alerted Drakken to the fact that he wasn't speaking to the shop assistant. He straightened up and turned to the source of the voice. The recognition was instantaneous. "Kim Possible… what are you doing here?" And he didn't sound angry, more like confused.
"The question is, what are you doing here."
"Shopping… Isn't it obvious?"
"For black diamonds?"
"Yes, Possible, for black diamonds. Shouldn't be such a rarity, but no shop has them, can you imagine?"
"Eh, no. Not particularly. Where is Shego?"
"On bed rest."
"Shego?" The woman remained still only when she was engrossed in a magazine or sun bathing. "How come?"
"Some years back she went to visit her niece in Go city. I warned her – no baby fever after. That was pointless obviously. Upon return she demanded we also have one. Gave us five months to get it done or I should make one. It was great five months, but they ended with no desired result, so I made her one. Well, two."
"Are you saying you made robots for children?"
"Of course, not, Possible. Aren't you old enough to know how babies are made? Naturally or artificially?"
Kim couldn't help, but blush at the question. Ron already mentioned children at least three times in the last year. To have such conversation with Drakken of all people… "Wait, Shego is on bed rest because she is pregnant with twins?!"
"Haven't I been telling you about it this whole time?" Well, one never knows with Drakken. "Nice vest by the way."
And the usual skip to another completely unrelated topic, now that's expected. But seriously, they are going to have babies? Where was the world going? "Yeah, very comfy. Has a hoody and all kinds of pockets for gadgets. Saved my life like three times."
"Are they at least paying you now? Never mind that. I don't care. But I do care about another satisfied customer."
What?! Dad gifted that vest to her, said it was some experimental protective equipment, was extremely vague about the source. But it did its work, so Kim didn't question it. The texture was a bit rough, not your usual textile, could it be… "So-"
There was a beep of an incoming text message. Drakken grabbed the phone and turned almost white in the face. "Not on bed rest anymore. And it is two weeks early!"
Drakken dashed out of the shop before Kim could even process the situation.
"So what was Drakken doing there?" came the question from the Kimmunicator.
"Buying… a birth necklace… for his wife?" Kim squeaked in response.
"None of what you've just said made any sense."
"Tell me about it, Wade."
…
~ Four years later ~
"We received an application to join the lab."
"Another one?! Uuuuu, the place is trending, Drew! But why are you so sore about it?"
"They'd almost gotten expelled from uni for blowing up the lab three times!"
"Seem your kind of crazy, so what's really stopping you from taking them in with open arms?"
"They are twins, Shego dear. Those twins."
"For real?! Are they even old enough to apply for jobs?"
"They are old enough to want to write their doctorates here."
"I wish I could see the faces of the Possibles, when they announced their wish to work under you."
"Enough with laughs, Shego. And they did include the picture with their application. It is indeed hilarious."
"Then you must hire them, D!"
"But what if they are too dangerous? I don't want them here with the girls and other children…"
"When they arrive, I will make it abundantly clear about the safety regulations here. They will never forget my words."
Drakken looked at his wife, whose words were dripping with threat of violence. It was her usual attitude about threats to their daughters' lives or possibility of them being hurt in any way. "I will write to them if you are sure."
"Even if something happens, the desert is vast…"
…..
Shego followed the movement of a red dot on her phone screen. They kept no secret about Drakken having his daughters chipped. Despite the family of four now leaving in the separate house that was erected on their request after Shego became pregnant and was followed by other houses for staff with families the number of which was constantly growing, the twin girls constantly found themselves in the lab building. There were no dolls and tea parties for the four-year-olds. There were books and tool-kits and advanced Lego models. They wanted to know how everything worked and how to make it work better, so they were drawn like moths to the dangerous flame of machinery and robotics. They were constantly reprimanded and the security guards were as constantly warned about letting them sneak in, but the two inherited their father's brain and they were small to fit anywhere so it was easy for them to move through the vents or in places no adult would fit or even look.
Thus Shego's almost daily run following the red dot. Thankfully, they were entering a private school for gifted children soon, but then a completely different ball game will start.
Suddenly, the red dot started to move towards Shego and on a much faster pace than a toddle was capable of. If the kid highjacked the hover board again… But no, from behind the corner appeared a young man with one of the twins in his arms.
"You shouldn't worry your parents so much," he was chastising her softly. "Believe me, I am speaking from experience. Oh, here you are, Missis Shego. Go to your mummy. Tara, was it?"
The girl skipped towards Shego with no care in the world and look of complete adoration on her face. And how in the world did he manage to differentiate Tara from her twin?
….
"So, D… Tara has gotten her first crush today."
"Already? Aren't they too young for that? Who is it?"
"One of your recent hires, I still can't tell them apart."
"Well, no matter if it doesn't go any further. And why are you clinging to me like someone in heat?"
"Because I am?"
Shego's seductive whisper in his ear did divert Drakken's attention from the report he was reading, but he tried to stay firm on the separation of business and pleasure. "I need to finish this-"
"Or we can try out the closet right there, we haven't check it out yet."
'Tried' being the operative word.
…..
But it went quite far, as far as the alter, but before that there was a considerable number of encumbrances on the way of the happily ever after of the twin foursome. And those obstacles came surprisingly from the Possibles' side. Things came to a head when the girls turned fifteen.
…..
"The twins are quitting, Shego."
"That explains the waterworks then. Both Tara and Jana were crying buckets the whole day. Moreover… The medbay reported to me that Jana was brought in after fainting. Tara only four hours later with the same symptoms."
"What's wrong with them then?"
"You very well know what's going on with them, Drew."
"Impossible… At fifteen? Have you told them?"
"I did tell them, that it was a possibility. The waterworks only intensified. They confessed everything. Twins told them – separately – they were leaving, because if they staid, they wouldn't be able to continue as before, so before anything… happened, it's better to part ways. Then the girls asked for a kiss goodbye, and you know what happened after."
"So they are running away like cowards?!"
"And what do think they should do? They are twice the girls' age. But the feelings are definitely mutual."
"This will be one awkward exit interview…"
…..
Ann and James Possible relished in every opportunity of their twins visiting, which was extremely rare while they were working in Drew's lab. Ann accused Drew of being a slavedriver, which James did not disprove, but he believed that the twins were holed up in the lab because they just didn't want to leave. Which was another problem – them being thirty and not spotting any serious girlfriends. Wherever the subject was raised, the twins seemed dodgy in their answers, claiming that they did date casually, but there was no one special so far. Well, it was their business.
At the beginning of their current visit, they informed about their resignation from the lab, which was relatively good news, but no new place of employment was announced, which was strange…
As strange as Jim leaving his wallet unattended. James took the wallet to return it to his son, but it opened to a reveal a group photo of presumably Jim's colleagues. They all looked very happy, so why did the twins leave then? Also… who even kept photos in wallets nowadays? Particularly a highly technically advanced engineering inventor? From behind the photo another white corner was visible. Was the group photo used to cover another one? And again, why not keep it on the phone like everybody else? Or was it something not even close people were allowed to see? James knew that it was ignoring his son's right to privacy, but he felt in his gut that something bad was going on.
He pulled at the corner and indeed another photo came out depicting a girl, which was not much of a surprise. The girl was undoubtfully beautiful and her emerald green eyes were somehow familiar. And the girl looked rather young… James should've just put the photo back, but something was off about it. Why hide it with such care?
James found his twin sons in the yard with unusually grim expressions. Were they not happy to be home?
"I found your wallet, Jim-"
"Thanks, dad-"
"Who is she?"
"Shit!" But that was not Jim, but Tim, who, logically, knew about the mysterious girl, but the reaction seemed to be a little too strong for a bystander.
"Will anybody tell me what's really going on?" Yes, the scolding dad was back. And they hadn't blow up another appliance that time.
"It's Jana Radford," came a whisper from Jim, who was hiding his face behind his hands as if ashamed.
Tim took out his wallet and pulled another photo from behind the same group photo Jim had. There was also a girl there, identical to Jim's one. While Jim's girl was photographed sitting on a blanket outside, Tim's girl's picture was taken with a complicated machinery as the backdrop. "And this is Tara Radford. They are… Doctor Drakken's daughters."
It was James's turn to exclaim 'Oh shit!', but he was a respected engineer and lecturer close to retirement, so he held himself together. "How did it all happened? And what actually happened?"
"Nothing happened, we swear! But they are just impossible to resist. They are beautiful and sarcastic and so wicked smart. They pointed out our mistakes when they were nine! And they can kick ass like nobody's business. They practically grew in front of us during summers and holidays, and weekends… They are like ideal girls for us, dad."
James didn't know how to respond to his sons' explanation. It was just all too out there. "I am going to call Drew."
Yes, that was how far their relationship had progressed. James had Drew's personal number, but he never had the need to use it. His first call was not picked up which was not a surprise. So James left three messages that they needed to talk about their children, and after another four calls he finally heard the grumpy voice of Drew Lipsky or was it Radford now? How come?
"I did not fire them, they left themselves. If they are telling you overwise, they are lying."
"Hello to you too, Drew. That is not an issue… The issue is, did you have any reason to fire them?"
"Why should I? They are our most promising inventors."
"Well… I don't think that I can put it delicately… You are not going to press charges?"
"For what? They were close a couple of times to cause a major meltdown, but we managed to avoid it."
"You daughters are minors, Drew!"
"I am quite aware how old my girls are, James. I made them after all."
"Are they the continuation of your Bebes project?"
"Has a meteorite fell on you, Possible? How can two be connected?"
"The boys said they were 'ideal girls'. Wasn't it your purpose for creating the Bebes, who were supposed to be ideal women?"
"I will pass the compliment to the other party. And, of course, the twins are not some project! Moreover, the ideal woman was always beside me, she just wasn't mine yet. I cleaned up the twins' genes considerably in their conception. They don't have Shego's glow, but they surely have her beauty and sass. They have my brains that they can at least apply properly, so they have much more of Shego than me, but it is for you to decide what is more dangerous. They are spitfires alright…"
"But they are only fifteen! You can't be saying that you are condoning all this!"
"As I was saying, Possible… They are much more Shego than me, so they inherited one of her family's very special traits. You see, just as Shego before, the girls fainted after getting the kiss from their loved one. So no, my girls are not hormonal teenagers with crushes or some variation of puppy love. They are truly in love with your sons. And the complication here is that we do not know if they can experience it again, because none of Shego's brothers have so far divorced their partners. Your sons can move on, my girls most probably cannot. So yes, I gave them three years. If all four want to pursue relationships on a later date, I won't be in their way. The physical interaction or visiting them in college are forbidden, but I cannot stop them from chatting online."
"They are going to college already?!"
"Your sons were in college at the same age, what's so unusual about it? Yeah, they are going to Berkeley. Jana is going to study bioengineering and Tara – electrical engineering and robotics."
"And you are just going to let them go to another state? Alone? Without a guardian?"
"It is more difficult with girls, of course, but they are skilled in martial arts and Shego is going to keep an eye on them like she did in boarding school. And the tracking chips will remain till they are eighteen, so… My girls are tough as nails, they can take care of themselves."
James had conflicting feelings after ending the call. The twins have never shown such dedication to any romantic relationships of theirs. Could they actually have deep feelings for girls twice younger their age?
"Have you decided to wait for them?" he asked, returning outside where his sons were still sitting, seemingly with bated breath about his decision.
"Of course," they answered in unison.
…
When James told his wife about the twins'… betrothed? she was understandably not happy. Kim and Ron gave them two grandchildren, but they barely saw them since their daughter's career of international crime prevention took her all over the world with Ron mostly being a stay-at-home dad with that home constantly moving. The twins being with – let's be frank – genetically modified girls, couldn't result in anything different. The twins were geniuses, so usual expectations could hardly apply to them, but… Drakken and Shego's girls? And how will Kim react to the news?
The elder Possibles decided to wait it out on all fronts. A lot could happen in three years.
