Chapter 31

Much as some of us fight it, our parents have a mystical hold over us, the power to affect our thoughts and emotions the way only they can. It's a bond that changes over time, but doesn't diminish, even if they're half a world away, or in another world entirely. It's a power we never fully understand. We're left only to wonder that when our time comes, what kind of hold will we have on our children?

Brooke took a breath. Feeling her heart leap into her throat.

Her eyes burned with unshed tears. She wasn't sure if it was from anger or relief.

"Brookie. Let us explain." Ted pleaded.

Brooke felt her hands ball into fists. Her hands shaking.

"You wanted to be dead to me. And now you are." Brooke proclaimed. Turning from them as she walked away and got back into the car.

The home was quiet. Brooke's gaze remained on the road. Her tightened grip on the steering wheel leading the way.

Once they eventually got to the house. Brooke parked the car in the driveway.

Lucas turned to look at her. "How did it go.? What happened.?"

Brooke took a deep breath. Taking her hands off the steering wheel.

Looking straight at her husband.

"It was them. At the house. I told them that they wanted to be dead to me and now they were. All these years Luke. I mourned for parents who weren't dead."

"I was right all along. Everyone lies. I'm the idiot who falls for it every time."

"Is this really the life you wanted or did you just settle for me.?" Brooke questioned.

Lucas felt his heart sink. "I love you. I'm in love with you."

"You know that. I've told you and shown you in all the ways i possibly can."

"This isn't about us." He reassured her.

"You're right it's about me. They did all of this to stay away. To not have to be bothered to be in my life. I wasn't worthy enough of their time. To given their affection. To be treated as if i mattered at all."

"So that only leads me to wonder when i'll begin to disconnect and not want this life we've built or you're love." Brooke admitted.

"Brooke." Lucas said.

Brooke left the car before Lucas could say anything more.
