Reflected Back At You

Chapter 32

Solitude is the profoundest fact of the human condition. Man is the only being who knows he is alone."

By the time Lucas got back inside the home. He locked the door. Turned off the downstairs lights and checked in on their sons who were fast asleep.

First he checked in their bedroom and didn't find her. He then went downstairs and attempted to open the basement door.

He knocked on it softly. Calling out to her.

"Brooke. We need to talk. Open the door please!" Lucas pleaded.

"Leave me alone!" Brooke exclaimed. The emotion in her voice thick.

Lucas remembered in that moment that they had spare keys to almost every room. Only him and Brooke knew about that.

He rushed upstairs to their bedroom. Went into the bottom of the closet and pulled out the box containing the keys.

He removed the one labeled basement and ran out of the bedroom. And went straight towards the basement door. Unlocking it in a matter of minutes.

"Brooke!" Lucas called out when he got inside the room.

Brooke had her arms wrapped around herself. Tears streaming from her eyes. She was sitting on the floor.

"I want to be alone." Brooke proclaimed.

"I'm not leaving you." Lucas replied.

Going over to her. Wrapping his arms around her.

She resisted his comfort. Hitting against his chest. Until she eventually broke down.

Her sobs filling the room. As he held her close. Wanting to make her feel better but not knowing what to say or what to do.

"Why am i so impossible to love." Brooke confessed between sobs.

Lucas picked her up and carried her upstairs and into their bedroom.

Before coming back downstairs to close and lock the door.

When he re emerged in their bedroom.

"You need to sleep. You're so stressed and emotional."

"This isn't healthy for you or the baby." Lucas insisted.

"Why haven't you left me like everyone else.?" Brooke asked.

"Because i love you. And that isn't going to ever change." He reassured her.

Brooke eventually did fall asleep. Wrapped in Lucas's arms.

He called the store in the morning. Telling Rachel to run it without her. Brooke wouldn't be coming in today.

Lucas then woke up Bailey and Barney. Lead the way downstairs and made them breakfast.

Lucas put together an egg breakfast scramble. Which was made with scrambled eggs, bacon, cheese, onion and refrigerated shredded hash brown potatoes.

Bailey had chocolate milk. Barney had apple juice.

Lucas loaded up his biggest mug with coffee combined with cream. And 3 sugars.

Honestly he was still reeling from last night. Watching and holding his wife while she broke down.

Caused this intense consuming wave of protectiveness to arise within him.

He didn't know Ted and Victoria and at this point he was more then okay with remaining a stranger.

He didn't understand how parents could disregard their only child in such a cruel way. He hated them. With every fiber of his being.

"Why isn't momma up usually she drops us off at school before going to her store.?" Bailey asked.

"Is everything okay.?" Barney added in.

The boys gaze locked in on their father.

"You're mom had a rough night. She's not going to work today. I'll be picking you up from school." Lucas informed them.

Concerned looks went across both the boys faces. "Are mom and the baby okay.?" They questioned in unison.

"The two of you. Don't need to worry. You're mom and the baby are alright. What happened has nothing to do with that." He reassured them.
