CHAPTER 2

Serena walked into Route 2, confident. The grass swished beneath her feet. Suddenly, a loud cry of, "BUNNELBY!" erupted. Serena gasped as a rabbit-like Pokemon that was dark gray and had mud spattered all over it stood in a battle position. "Oh!" She reached for Flame's PokeBall and threw it, hoping he could help her. "Go, Flame!"

Flame popped out and looked at the new Pokemon in anger for disturbing his trainer.

"Use Ember!" Serena commanded. Flame shot out a ball of fire and it hit the Pokemon. The Pokemon, however, shook itself and spun a circle. "Agility!" Serena gasped, remembering the move. She quickly got out her PokeDex to identify the Pokemon. "Bunnelby," The Dex said. "The Digging Pokemon. A Normal-Type. Bunnelby excels at digging holes. Using its ears, it can dig a nest 33 feet deep in one night." Serena put the PokeDex away. "So it's a Normal-Type..." She didn't have any strengths for that, so she decided to use Flame's best attack. "Ember, once more!" Flame used Ember, but Bunnelby quickly dodged, having had its Speed heighten. Bunnelby went in for a Tackle, and Flame yelped.

"Oh no, Flame!" Serena cried out. Wait, if it's there... "NOW, Scratch!" Flame didn't hesitate and Bunnelby leaped back, its cheek sore from the blow.

"Ember to finish!" Serena exclaimed. Flame finally hit Bunnelby with Ember, and the Pokemon fainted, then rushed away back into its burrow. "Phew, close call," Serena said, sighing in relief. "Flame, return. You could use a good rest."

"Fennekin," said Flame as he disappeared back into the ball.

"Hey, nice job there defeating Bunnelby," a voice said. Serena spun around to see Calem and Shauna a few feet away, watching.

"Your Fennekin was sooo good!" Shauna squealed. Serena blushed under the praise. "Well, you see, it was just a battle..."

"Hey, do you want to learn how to catch a Pokemon?" Shauna asked. Serena nodded. "Then come learn how to catch Pokemon with me!"

Calem blocked Shauna. "Let me handle this one," he said, rushing into the grass. A Fletchling flew up, clearly angered by Calem's disruption. "Go, Froakie!" Calem exclaimed, sending a blue frog-like Pokemon out. It has cream colored foaming bubbles around its neck, big yellow eyes, and a blue strip down its head to its nose.

"Use Bubble!" Calem commanded. Froakie shot out a burst of bubbles that took Fletchling down. Before the bird Pokemon had time to react, Calem threw a ball at it. "Go, PokeBall!" he shouted. Fletchling was captured inside the capsule. The PokeBall rocked once... twice... three times! A few stars appeared as the ball went, "Chung."

"And that's how you catch a Pokemon!" Calem boasted, holding one finger up in a know-it-all position. Serena and Shauna sweat-dropped as his antic. "What?" Calem asked. He walked over and picked up the PokeBall. "Plus, I automatically got all its data in my PokeDex."

Serena giggled. "Thank you for showing me, Calem. I'll be going now. I want to get going straight away!"

She rushed off, but a tug at her shirt stopped her. "Wait, I need to give you something," Calem said. Serena turned around and he handed her some PokeBalls. "Use these to catch Pokemon and add them to your team." Serena nodded and put them in a pocket of her bag.

Calem dashed off, calling out for wild Pokemon, and Shauna quickly followed. Serena went off at her own pace, through the tall grass, until she reached the end of the Route. A young boy wearing a short-sleeved sweatshirt, black shorts, and sneakers, with ruffled tan hair called to her. "You there! You've got a Pokemon, dontcha?" Serena gulped and nodded nervously. The boy grinned. "Then let's have a Pokemon Battle! Go, Zigzagoon!" A little rodent Pokemon with spiked brown and cream fur, black markings around its eyes, and a spiked tail came bursting out.

Serena whipped out her PokeDex. "Zigzagoon," the Dex began. "The Tiny Raccoon Pokemon. A Normal-Type. Zigzagoon, by their name, run in a distinct zigzag pattern. They mark their territory by rubbing their bristly fur against trees."

"Go, Flame!" Serena said. Flame came out, swishing his tail.

"Use Quick Attack!" the boy shouted. Zigzagoon moved so quickly that Flame didn't have time to see the move coming. Already having taken damage from the last battle, it looked weak. Serena cringed. "Flame, please hang in there..." she pleaded to him quietly. Then, louder, she exclaimed, "Use Ember!" Flame shot out a fire ball, and Zigzagoon was engulfed in the fire. "Way to go, Flame!" Serena cheered as the Zigzagoon flopped over in a faint. "Darn, you won," the boy said. "Here's your reward." He gave her a few PokeDollars. Serena said her thanks and looked at the exhausted Flame. "Hey buddy, have a Potion." She sprayed the medicine on and Flame instantly perked up. Serena smiled and put him into his PokeBall.

Not far from entering, she heard the familiar voice of Shauna. "Serenapaw, wait!" The brown-haired girl ran up to her. "Can I tag along with you? I can heal your Pokemon at any time."

"Of course!" Serena agreed, thankful for the companionship.

"Have you caught any new Pokemon yet?" Shauna questioned, glancing at Serena's belt.

"Nope, not yet," Serena replied. "But here in this forest, I'm sure I will!" She charged off further.

As she was walking, she tripped and fell over something. "Ouch... What was that?" She picked up the object. It was a Potion! She remembered the sign at the front of the forest- "This is Santalune Forest. Keep an eye out for dropped items!" She grinned and stowed the Potion away in her bag. Continuing on, she entered a patch of tall grass. Suddenly, a green caterpillar Pokemom jumped out at her. "Caterpie!" Serena yelled in shock, remembering the Pokemon from Kanto. She hurried and took out her Dex.

"Caterpie," the PokeDex said in a robotic voice. "The Worm Pokemon. A Bug-Type. For protection, it releases a horrible stench from the antenna on its head to drive away enemies."

"Flame, let's go!" Serena called out her Pokemon. Flame burst out, ready to fight. "Use Ember!" Serena commanded, remembering that it would be super-effective on the Bug-Type. The attack hit and Caterpie rolled to the side. It stood up and enveloped Flame is a wrapping of silk. "String Shot!" Serena gasped. The attack would lower Flame's Speed. Flame pushed its way through and scratched Caterpie. He looked at Serena and nodded. "O-okay then..." Serena said nervously. "Go PokeBall!" Caterpie was engulfed into the ball. It rocked once... twice... three times! "Chung." Serena smiled and picked the PokeBall up. "I just caught Caterpie!" she said proudly, Flame leaping beside her. "Now it needs a nickname... I know!" Since Caterpie will eventually evolve in Butterfree, a good name choice would be.. "Butter!" The PokeBall shook, seeming like Caterpie agreed.

A few healing and battle sessions later...

"We're at the edge of the forest!" Serena exclaimed, dashing forward through the last patch of grass. Something green and orange leaped into her face. She screamed and shook it off. A green monkey Pokemon gave her a friendly smile. Atop its head was a tree-like bushy sprout of hair. Its long tail had leaves. It had some little orange hands and green feet. Its ears were big and leafy green. Serena held the PokeDex int front of the Pokemon and it started explaining.

"Pansage. The Grass Monkey Pokemon. A Grass-Type. It shares the leaf on its head with weary looking Pokemon. These leaves are known to relieve stress."

"A Grass-Type?" Serena muttered to herself. "Perfect! Then... Flame, I choose you!" Flame yipped as it came out. However, the Pokemon looked a little tired from their previous battles. "Flame, never mind, return. Go, Butter!" Butter popped out. "Pie pie!"

Pansage seemed curious at the little Pokemon, but Serena knew it didn't see this coming. "String Shot!" Butter shot out a silky thread the engulfed Pansage. "Tackle!" Butter crashed into Pansage, which broke the thread and sent the monkey Pokemon flying. Pansage fell to the ground. "Let's go PokeBall!" Serena shouted, throwing a ball at Pansage.

The ball rocked once... twice.. three times! "Chung."

"Alright!" Serena cheered. "Butter, come back. Now for a nickname..." She thought carefully. "I think you'll like Leafy." Pansage, now outside its ball, chirped in a funny way. Serena giggled and returned it, heading out of the forest.

On Route 2...

"Guys, gather round!" Calem called. The friends had all gathered together on Route 2. "I have something to share with everyone." He passed out some notes. "I call these the Adventure Rules. You may find them handy in completing your adventure." Calem winked.

"Great, thanks Cal!" Tierno said. "C'mon Trevs, let's go catch some more Pokemon!" He and Trevor dashed off into the tall grass. "Wait up!" Shauna called after them.

Calem turned to face Serena. "I'm going to work towards getting to the Santalune City Gym. You?"

"O-oh. I had no idea there was a Gym.." Serena began hesitantly. "But I guess if it'll help me and my Pokemon, then sure."

Calem nodded. "See you there!" He dashed off as well.

Serena walked off more slowly until she bumped into a little girl who was holding a PokeBall. "Hey you, let's have a battle!" the girl exclaimed. Serena, taken aback, nodded hesitantly.

"Okay then, Pichu!" the girl exclaimed. Serena looked up the info for Pichu.

"Pichu. The Tiny Mouse Pokemon. An Electric-Type. Despite its small size, Pichu can zap even adult humans. However, if it does so, it also surprises itself."

"Leafy, I choose you!" The monkey Pokemon burst out, ready to fight. "Use Play Nice!" Pansage played around with Pichu for a moment, and Pichu looked friendlier. "Now use Scratch!" Pansage quickly scratched Pichu, who looked shocked and fell back. "Leafy, return!" Leafy disappeared, and Serena swapped him for Flame.

"Fenne!"

"Use Ember!"

Flame's ball of fire hit Pichu, who, although weak, got back up.

"Use Thunder Shock!" the preschooler commanded. Pichu focused its electricity and poor Flame was shocked! "Flame!" Serena gasped. Flame had electric power sparking around it, showing paralysis. Thinking quickly, Serena got out a Paralyze Heal. She sprayed her Pokemon with it. "There you go Flame," she said softly. "Now, Howl to raise Attack!" she shouted, using the latest move Flame had obtained.

Flame howled to the sky, and power surged around him. "Finish with Ember!" Pichu didn't have time to see the attack coming before it was too late. The Pokemon was out.

"Hey, you cheated!" the little girl said, reluctantly giving her some PokeDollars. Serena raced away down the Route until she came across another trainer. "Let's battle!" the school boy said, throwing his PokeBall. "Go, Pansage!"

Serena, knowing what type Pansage was already, sent out Butter.

"A Caterpie against my Pansage?" the boy snorted. "This is too easy! Pansage, use Scratch!"

"Dodge, Butter, quickly!" Serena shouted. Butter quickly leaped to one side as Pansage skitted into nothing. "Tackle, while we have a chance!" Butter charged into Pansage, who took the hit and fell back. "String Shot!"

"Not gonna happen! Pansage, Lick!"" Pansage used a long tongue that licked Butter right on the face. Butter winced from the damage but quickly shook it off. "Butter, try String Shot again, while they're recovering from their attack!" Butter quickly shot silk that engulfed around Pansage, who now couldn't move. "Tackle before they break free!" Butter tackled Pansage again, who fainted.

"You did it!" Serena cheered. She suddenly gasped as a white light glowed around Butter. "Butter... is evolving!" In Caterpie's place, a cocoon-wrapped green Pokemon stood still. "Meta."

"Metapod. The Cocoon Pokemon," the Dex began. "A Bug-Type. It is waiting for the moment to evolve. At this stage, it can only harden, so it remains motionless to avoid attack."

"Cool!" Serena praised her Pokemon. "But you should get some rest."

"Let's go Pansear!" the school boy shouted, throwing his next Pokemon out.

"In that case, I choose Flame!" Serena shouted. She guessed that Pansear was a Fire-Type.

"Pansear, lick this Fennekin!" the boy commanded. Pansear, like Pansage, tried to reach with a tongue to lick Flame. Flame, however, leaped over the tongue. "Ember, let's go!" Flame used his attack, which made the Pansear faint.

"One Pokemon left," the school boy said, gripping a ball. "Panpour, go!" A blue monkey Pokemon burst out.

"Flame, return, and Leafy, I choose you!" Leafy popped out, prepared.

"Panpour, Play Nice!" Panpour made friends with Leafy, and Serena knew that her Pokemon's attack had been lowered. "Ugh, come on Leafy, Lick!" This time, it was her Pokemon who used the attack, which hit Panpour. Low on health now, Panpour weakly stood up.

"Come on Leafy, let's finished with Scratch!" Leafy quickly scratched Panpour, who instantly fainted.

"Not bad," the boy said, giving Serena some PokeDollars. "You're almost to Santalune City, by the way, if you're looking for the Gym."

"I am, thanks," Serena replied, nodding. The boy pointed down the path, and she quickly rushed down.

I'm ready for my Gym battle!
