The shrill scream of the alarm was quickly cut off by Bella's hand pounding furiously at the button. Cursing the book next to her bedside for keeping her up so late into the night she let out a groan and began getting dressed to prepare herself for the school day ahead.

The house was completely silent as she walked downstairs, just as it was every other morning when she awoke, her parents long since having left to go to work.

Her parents Renee and Charlie hated vampires with every fibre of their being. Since she was young they had always lectured her on how disgusting and violent vampires were and how vampire mates were to be pitied and avoided. A belief they stuck by through choosing to live in a small town that helped them avoid vampires and their mates. They had originally grown up in Arizona but as soon as they had both turned 18 Charlie got a job offer at Forks police station and they left to live in Forks.

Forks had a small population composed mostly of regular human beings and only a handful of mates and very few vampires as they tended to stick to larger cities where blood and recreational activities geared towards their superhuman abilities were easily found.

Charlie had worked his way up to being the chief of police although he was rarely needed. The police acted as a superficial show of human power, however the real law making and peace keeping was enforced by the Alliance.

The Alliance was a task force of vampires who worked for the Volturi government with a focus on keeping the new laws upheld. The soldiers on the force themselves were governed by stringent laws aimed at preventing corruption. This could be seen in the forces of gifted vampires who were able to read minds to various degrees that were placed in charge of regularly ensuring Alliance soldiers remained uncorrupted.

Charlie was happy with his job and the power it did provide and spent countless hours on call, a fact Bella was often relieved by as her parents tended to fight a lot.

Her mother had no formal job, something that bothered her father to no end; but she was a free spirit and had instead opted to spend her time doing odd activities at various locations. Such as working as a house cleaner one day, and a temporary bartender the next. The only things her jobs had in common was Renee avoided any positions that would bring her in contact with a vampire or their mate. Bella had always found her mothers lack of a permanent job fitting due to her laid back and oftentimes reckless nature.

As she began her long walk to school she nibbled at a breakfast bar that she had grabbed from the kitchen. Taking care of herself came naturally to her as her parents had never really planned to have her and so they were not really the parental type, this led to many hours spent home alone and to her having developed a plethora of cooking and cleaning skills.

Arriving at school she sighed and headed to her locker to get her books for the day. As she collected her books she had to sidestep some jocks who she recognised to be Mike and Ben who were jovially throwing a football through the halls passing it between themselves and laughing as they dove for it.

She could hear the sounds of the other students carrying on about their lives in school. Everyone was getting ready for the various events they had planned that day. As she walked by the stairs she could see some of them were sitting in a large group listening to music and just relaxing before the day ahead. The music itself was quite pleasant really and she believed she must have heard it before, perhaps on the car radio or in the grocery store when she was buying ingredients for dinner.

As she walked up to her locker she could see Alice talking away enthusiastically with her older sister Rosalie.

"Heya Alice and Rose!" she called as she walked up to the two girls with a large grin.

"Hi Bella, how are you? I like your shirt! Are you ready for the biology test today?" Alice hurried out in a single breath.

"I'm good, thank you and never have been never will be" She answered in amusement at her overly exuberant friend. It wasn't that she wasn't good at biology, she actually loved it, but tests had never been her strong suit and her parents normally pulled her out of her lessons on days they knew they would be learning about vampire or mate biology. This would normally not be allowed but her fathers position as chief allowed him to call in certain favours. The school however would not allow her to get marks for tests and assignments she didn't complete so she always got zero for the material her parents wouldn't allow her to learn.

Which meant a large portion of her tests in the past were not the same as her peers and she had to make sure her marks in all other areas of biology stayed high to make up for it.

"Aw I am sorry Bell's I know how hard it is to make up the marks, me and Rose are still happy to tutor you if you want and maybe you can convince the school to ignore your dad!" She crowed excitedly at the prospect of the small rebellion.

"Yeah Bella and you know we'd be great tutors for all the material given as it applies to us" Rose said with her normal cool aura surrounding her. The only thing betraying her was the small smile tugging at the corners of her lips.

"Oh I know you could but I'd rather not risk it getting back to Charlie" She laughed with them.

When she was younger she had accepted her parents' venomous views of vampires and their mates as true and she had even been grateful that she was not a vampire mate. That was until she met Alice at the beginning of the schoolyear 5 months ago. She had been assigned to welcome Alice to the school and show her around after she and her sister had moved to Forks. She was a cute little firework of a girl and Bella had liked her instantly.

The girls had become fast friends and went everywhere with each other that first week of school coming to depend on each other. Bella even came to know her older sister Rose who was a lot colder and less trusting than Alice but Bella found she liked Rose's blunt honesty and kick ass nature and after that first week she knew she wanted both girls to be her friends.

It was their first PE lesson together that changed everything. The girls had gone to change into their gym clothing before the lesson when Bella noticed the obvious strand of birthmarks across Alice's small back. Recognising them instantly Bella had let out a surprised shriek startling Alice and making her drop the hairbrush she had previously held.

Alice had looked at her with a deeply furrowed brow and a concentrated look on her face. Bella would later compare it to when she and Alice played a game of chess and Alice thought very carefully about each new move. She knew it was not the typical reaction most would have to a vampire mate as they were generally well respected and cared for but she couldn't help but feel terrified for the situation her new friend seemed to be in.

Alice had rushed to explain then that not only was she a vampire's mate but she was completely over the moon happy about that fact. A completely foreign concept to Bella who could only sit and worry her lip as she thought though what Alice had said. Having believed that vampires' mates were brainwashed submissive girls that couldn't speak for themselves, the kind but assertive Alice turned her view upside down. Her view was even further changed once she got to know Rosalie was also a vampire's mate. Rose took no shit from anyone and Bella found the idea of her being submissive and brainwashed like her parents had said to be absolutely ridiculous and laughable.

Alice told her of the vampire who she was mated to. A loving man who went out of his way to send gifts and love letters to her at every turn. And how Alice had known of him since she was young and for her meeting her mate was a day she was long awaiting in anticipation and excitement not fear. As far as Bella could hear he had always protected Alice and had nothing but respect for her and she seemed equally happy with the arrangement.

As the girls walked to class Bella thought about how lucky Alice and Rose seemed to be. She sometimes found herself yearning for the assured love and dedication they had as a result of being mates. Knowing you would always be loved, cared for and if what the girls said was true with your ideal match sounded like a pretty good deal.
