Dana and Ryan were getting bored, so they started to play with the toys that their grandma had given them. Dana glanced up from playing with her doll and watched as the rain continued to fall. Even though Bill had the heater on, it was still cold in the car. She reached over and grabbed her blue toboggan. She put it on and went back to playing with her doll. Dana pretended that she was a doctor and was fixing up her doll arm. Right after her aunt had left bruises and cuts on her, Grandma Mason cleaned her cuts and bandaged her. That was one thing that a doctor did. But there was a lot more to being a doctor. As a doctor she'd put casts on broken arms and legs, prescribe medicine, diagnose patients with diseases, and even refer them to surgeons if they needed surgery.
A semi-truck was coming, and her father turned his head a looked at them with a smile. She heard a loud horn blow and she watched as her as swerved to miss the truck. He hit a guard rail and it broke.
"Both of you get your seat belts off," Bill instructed as he took of his seat belt and started to climb into the back seat. "Ryan open the door and get out. Dana and I will follow you."
Ryan reached over and unbuckled Dana's seat belt first and then he unbuckled his. He dropped his firetruck, and he opened the door. Just as the car was about to go over the cliff, Bill grabbed both of the kids and jumped out of the car. It was very slippery, and they tumbled over the cliff.
"Dana and Ryan, just hold on to me!" Bill shouted as they tumbled over the steep hill. Dana had had her arms around her father's neck and Ryan was holding on to Bill leg. For a few seconds they were falling in mid-air. However, there was an old root hanging on the cliff wall and Bill managed to grab it.
Dana felt her father tighten his grip around her waist. She couldn't help from watching the car come falling from the air and heard loud echo as the car burst into flames. Tiny pieces of metal came flying through the air as if aiming on shattering the earth by tearing apart from every atom.
"Dad, please help me!" Ryan cried.
"Ryan, just hold on," Bill shouted.
"I can't," Ryan cried. "Dad, please help me! I'm slipping!"
"Just hold on buddy," Bill cried as he struggled to hang on to the root.
Dana looked over her father's shoulder and saw that Ryan was now hanging on to Bill's shoe.
"I can't dad, I'm slipping," Ryan screamed.
"Daddy, I'm scared," Dana shrieked.
"Somebody please help," Bill cried and monster appeared.
One minute they were on the road safe and sound. The next minute they there were loud noises, acrid smells, and mangled metal. And in their case, they were dangling in midair. Now a monster had appeared. Everything went black as Dana passed out due to fright.
Light appeared in Dana's eyes as she heard voices above her. She blinked her eyes a few times, as she became aware of her surrounds. Bill was standing in a Cherrypicker. She looked above her and saw that they were moving closer and closer to the edge of the cliff. Many people were shining flashlights down at them.
"Daddy, what's going on?" Dana asked.
"The fire department got here just a few minutes ago," Bill replied when they Cherrypicker reached the top and they got. "The driver of the semi-truck saw us go over the cliff. They called the Fire Department to come help us."
"Where's Ryan?" Dana asked when they got out of the Cherrypicker.
"I'm sorry, Dana," Bill started as tears ran down his face. "Ryan fell and he's no longer with us."
"Is he really gone?" Dana gasped as tears formed in her eyes.
"I'm afraid so," Bill answered.
He led Dana to through the muddy water as they made their way to Grandma Mitchell's car. The rain continued to fall as she felt the freezing rain landing on her hands and face.
"Thank goodness, you two are okay," she cried as she pulled her granddaughter and son into a big hug. "Is it true, that Ryan is gone?"
"Yes, mother," Billy replied as Grandpa Mitchell helped Dana into the car. "We'll discuss this more when we get home."
Author's note:
We never knew what Dana remembered about the car crash, so this is what I think happened from her point of view. More is coming soon!
