God's in his Heaven / All's right with the world

"Pippa Passes," Robert Browning

Author's note: The following story represents the latest effort incorporating elements of "Evangelion: Singularity," a collaborative multimedia fan project conceptualised on a message board several years ago. The first chapter of the original fanfic appears here, in a newly-revised form.

The story begins after episode 16 of the original series and takes the place of the remaining episodes, thus chapter titles are stylised as Episode 17', Episode 18', et al. Assume all dialogue is in Japanese unless otherwise indicated.

In Heaven a spirit doth dwell / "Whose heart-strings are a lute"

– "Israfel," Edgar Allan Poe

As we stroll through the hanging gardens

the ropes seem to disguise the roses;

their jagged thorns are more defined

than the blossoming petals which

once attracted our focus to them

Blood gingerly curves along the leaves

tracing our silhouettes in the soil

The curtain insulating my soul from yours

is an electric supernova of absolute terror

Seared into my flesh and

inscribed into my bones

The incantation binding my soul and body

is an enclave of every word left unspoken

and my existence is tenuous

The Angel of the pit

that beckons me to its depths

is the Beast which I will become

Past, Present, and Future

Cicadas serenade us with the saga of

my bittersweet redemption in your eyes

Cherubim harmonise with haunting notes

Dreams pierced by their unrelenting gaze,

days torn by their inexorable outcries

I fold under the heat of the melody

and long for the meteoric state

wherein I am devoid of the things

which those around me worship

This is my folly; this is our Great Work

A star falls into the sea

poisoning the water,

and concurrently,

all life in it dies

Past, Present, and Future
