A/N: I hope you enjoy the final chapter! Also, if you enjoyed this fanfic, I have another Avengers one I just started writing; I should have the first chapter up in the next few days. I haven't decided on a title yet, but it'll be quite a bit longer than this one. Be sure to check that one out!
Anyway, please R&R – I love getting reviews!
I do not own Avengers.
Natasha grabbed the spare cure-launching gun from her belt and took aim. The vials were designed to rupture and release the cure gas three seconds after being launched, or upon impact with a solid object, whichever happened first. She aimed for the ceiling on the far end of the room, just in front of where the zombies were, and fired.
The zombified Steve, Tony, and Hulk charged toward her. Just before the vial hit the ceiling, Hulk leapt up, jaws wide open, and swallowed it.
Natasha's eyes widened. A second later, she heard a muffled explosion inside Hulk. He stopped staggering towards her, but no change in his physical appearance was immediately visible.
The other two zombies took advantage of this distraction to close the distance between them and Natasha. She quickly took aim again with the gun, but just before she shot it, zombie Tony growled, "Blaaa….ztaaah!"
A laser shot from his hand blaster and hit the gun. Natasha's blast flew off course, hitting the stairs leading up to the next floor, while she was knocked backwards. The green cure gas began to drift into far end of the room.
The cure gun Natasha had been holding landed several feet away, now useless, as it had been cracked in half. She hurried to unzip her bag and grab another one, but she realized she wouldn't have enough time before the zombies reached her. She quickly looked behind them, at the far end of the room. Hulk had dropped to the ground; his skin was returning to its normal green hue, and he appeared to also be reverting back to Bruce.
I won't be able to get one of the other guns ready in time to cure Steve and Tony too, Natasha thought. And if the zombies get to me and Bruce turns back into a human, they'll go after him and turn him back into a zombie right away. I've got to get them away from him.
Natasha quickly got up and threw the duffel bag across the room towards Hulk. She hurried down the stairs, and the two zombies followed her.
Upon entering the lab, Natasha grabbed the nearest table and pushed it over to block the stairway. Steve and Tony rushed down the stairs after her; Steve tumbled over the table, and Tony, with another growl, activated his thrusters to fly over it. As Tony flew towards her, Natasha grabbed the centrifuge off the table next to her and swung it into his suit's ARC reactor. The reactor shattered and Tony fell to the floor, growling and spitting but weighed down by the suit of armor and unable to move.
Steve got back up and staggered across the lab toward Natasha. She didn't want to risk seriously hurting him; he wasn't wearing a suit of armor like Tony, after all. So she tossed the centrifuge aside and grabbed another table. She flipped it on its side so the tabletop was facing Steve, and braced herself to hold him back with it as long as she could.
Come on, Bruce, wake up, she thought.
On the floor above, Bruce slowly awoke. He sat up and looked around. He was clearly in one of the upper levels of Avengers Tower, but he couldn't recall how he had gotten there.
Then it all came back to him.
He had been working on the cure with the other Avengers, and then he and Tony had headed up a few floors. Then the helicopter had fallen into the tower, and….
…he had turned into the zombie Hulk.
He recognized where he was now: on the floor just above the lab. On the floor several feet from him was a duffel bag lying open. He stumbled over to it and looked inside it. The bag contained several guns loaded with vials of the zombie cure.
Nat and Steve must've finished the cure then, he thought. But…what happened after that? They must've been….
Suddenly, he heard a crash from directly below him. That must be them. Tony made sure no other zombies could get in, and we took care of all the ones on the lower floors. I mean, they could've woken back up, but it would probably take them a really long time to stumble up all the floors leading to the lab.
Bruce grabbed a pair of the cure guns from the bag and walked over to the stairs to the lab. He crept down the stairs, eventually peeking around the curved wall into the lab.
On the far side of the room, Natasha had barricaded herself in a corner with one of the lab's tables, and the zombified Steve was trying to force his way over the table. About halfway across the room, zombie Tony was sprawled on the floor – he clearly wasn't dead, as he was still growling and moving his limbs, but he appeared dazed.
"HEY!" Bruce yelled.
Steve turned to face him and snarled.
"Leave her alone!" Bruce ordered. "You want someone? Come and get me!"
Steve charged across the room, while Tony tried to lift himself off the floor. Once the two zombies were close to each other, Bruce shot a vial of the zombie cure at the floor between them. The green gas exploded from the vial and enveloped both zombies. Steve emerged from the cloud, continuing towards Bruce, but then stopped and fell forward. He landed on his hands and knees, color slowly returning to his skin.
Bruce ran across the room. "Nat, are you okay?" he asked.
She pushed the table aside. "Yeah, I'm okay. Thanks, Bruce."
"What happened?"
"From what I can tell, something breached the tower and turned you and Tony into zombies. Then Steve went up to figure out what had happened, and he got infected next. I tried to cure all of you, but…the big guy ate the vial I shot at you. I could see that was curing you, so I left the bag up there with you and drew them away. I didn't want them infecting me and then seeing you unarmed and going after you again."
"Thanks. So, are Steve and Tony better now?"
Natasha turned around to see them slowly getting up, their outlines visible through the slowly dissipating green mist. "What…happened?" Tony asked. "Is this…oh no, did we get turned into zombies?"
"Yes," Natasha said. "You feeling okay? Steve, how about you?"
"I think so," Tony said. "Granted, it looks like the same can't be said for my suit…and these bite marks all over me don't feel so great."
"I'm good too," Steve said.
"So the cure works then. That's good to know."
"Well then, let's go," Natasha said. "The sooner we get up in the Quinjet and start spreading the cure around, the smaller an area the virus will have infected."
"I'm all for that," Steve said. "Alright, team. Avengers…assemble."
