It had indeed been good to see her again.
Finishing his last bottle of beer, Dick wallowed in his thoughts. His phone was buzzing again, and he chose to ignore it as he tried concentrating on the television. Finding the news stale, he flipped channels out of boredom. There was no point in taking a nap now, he would have to go on patrol in the next hour. He checked the phone after it stopped ringing to see yet another missed call from Oracle and a few more texts. Word traveled fast it seemed because there were texts from Wally, Donna, Roy, Jason, and even Alfred, all asking how the mission went. Like they couldn't get any more obvious. Damian's message caught his eye among the sea of messages.
"Don't be an idiot" His message read. Dick had gone to Atlanta met Damian immediately after. Sensing something was bothering him, Damian asked Dick what happened and before Dick could stop himself, he had blabbered everything to a very understanding Damian, who listened patiently without interrupting as Dick rambled on not only about the events of the day but dating back to his Robin and her Starfire days.
"Seems like you still love her," Damian stated point blankly at an open-mouthed Dick.
"She doesn't," Dick grunted turning his head away.
"I wouldn't be so sure of that assessment just as yet," Damian smirked battling on and leaving Dick full of questions.
Damian wasn't impressed with Kory in the beginning when he had first been forced to join the Titans under her leadership. He found her to be too trusting and naive. Kory was completely different from anyone he had ever met before, and Damian was man enough to admit that he had obviously misjudged her. Spending time under her wings had given him a new perspective on things and he came to respect her as a leader and he definitely approved her relationship with Dick, who Damian looked up the most to. Being as good with emotions as his father, when Dick and Kory broke up Damian texted Dick saying, "Don't be an idiot."
Replaying his conversation with Damian in his head, Dick started wondering of a possible future with her in his life. He hoped they could start as friends again and he would gladly take any sort of companionship she offered. He just wanted her to be a part of his life again.
Dick had been staring at his phone for way too long, debating whether he should call her or not. He lost his nerves a couple of times. As his phone rang again showing Oracle calling, Dick got seriously annoyed at her now. He cut the call this time contemplating whether he should text her to leave him alone or go on ignoring her, his phone buzzed with a message from Barbra.
"Don't you dare let her get away this time you dummy."
Looks like the message had reached everyone and just as he was about to pick up his phone to call Barbra, he saw a message from Bruce
"Don't screw it up this time."
It finally clicked to Dick what Bruce had done.
Sucking in a breath, Dick Grayson dialed the number which was all too familiar to him.
It was time to go back home.
A few rings rang and he almost lost his courage when he thought of disconnecting, he heard her sweet angelic voice.
"Hello?" a confused Kory answered clearly not having recognized the number.
"Kory," Dick exhaled the breath he didn't realize he was holding. "wouldyouliketogoforsomeburgerswithme?" he asked very hastily.
"I'm sorry?" She asked even more confused.
"Nightwing? Is that you?" She asked him when he hadn't answered anything.
"Dick?" She asked again softly
"No, it's Richard." Dick finally answered taking in a deep breath.
"I'm sorry you were not very clear earlier. Did you ask me if I wanted to for samba? Did you dial the wrong number?" Kory asked gently.
"No, Kory for once I got the correct number," Dick said smiling to himself.
"I have your fortune with me." Dick quickly added before Kory could say anything.
"My fortune?" Kory asked even more confused now.
"Yeah, I ordered Chinese for dinner and now I have your fortune cookie with me," Dick said confidently.
"Oh!" she paused "what does it say?"
"An old love will come back to you," Dick read out to her, his voice full of delight.
"It was great to see you the other day, would you like to have dinner with me? We can go to the burger place you like. Or Chinese? Or Indian or anywhere you would like!" he went on without pausing for her to answer.
"Dick?" She hesitated.
Dick felt his heart stop as he waited patiently for her to answer.
"I would like to see you again." He tried to encourage her.
"Dickā¦"
"Just to catch up."
"I don't know."
"I've missed you."
"I can't do this again Dick. I can't." Kory replied sounding tired.
"Please Kory, just dinner. I promise."
After what seemed like forever to Dick, Kory finally replied,
"Okay, as long as I can have extra mustard in my burger."
"Of course, anything you want." Dick laughed genuinely after what seemed like ages.
"May I pick you up by 7.00 pm on Monday?"
"Sure, see you soon"
"See you soon Star"
Dick went to his cupboard and pulled out the box with the hidden fortunes. He would win her back, he was confident. It would take a while, but he knew they belonged together. He was ready to put in all efforts and give her all she needs because Kory deserves better, and Dick can be better.
He smiled looking at his fortune for today, maybe there was truth in them because his fortune just came true.
"The star that shines in the darkness is one who leads toward daylight."
