43 Consequences
The battle ended as quickly as it began. Dwalin was the one who found them. He rushed up to Fili and Thorin, somehow carting both of them back into the mountain and down to the gate to meet up with Dain and the others. Thorin had been right killing Azog sent the armies scattering with no one to lead them. But there was no celebrating here, not that day. Their dead were countless, men elves and dwarves. Camps were quick to be erected the shadow of Erebor's gate Dain was directing the rebuilding of the gate, something solid but usable, unlike their barricade. Thorin was still out cold when Dain made his appearance. He smiled at Fili. Kili was currently swearing at Oin as he set his broken leg.
"Thank Mahal you all made it through this!" Dain said clapping Fili on the shoulder. Fili nodded. He'd never met Dain before, not formally, but Thorin had always spoken highly about him. "You've the look of your father about you Fili son of Vili, but Thorin has said the temperament of your mother thank Mahal."
"What do we know? Is the rest of the company alright?" Fili asked and Dain sat down next to his cot.
"We're taking stock. We've had heavy losses. Of the thirteen who answered Thorin's call I'm sure you'll be pleased to hear the three of you are the most injured. The youngest has some cuts and scrapes but only one that needed stitches." Dain said shaking his head slightly.
"Fourteen." Kili said grimacing as Oin wrapped the last bandage around his leg.
"What's that lad?" Dain asked and Kili pulled himself up on the pillows behind him. Oin rolled his eyes turning to the seat he'd ordered Tauriel to. She was scraped and bruised as well which was the only reason Oin had declined her offer to help with the injured. Oin rolled his eyes.
"Will you make sure he doesn't strain himself?" Oin said in Tauriel's direction. She nodded standing and resettling herself on the edge of Kili's bed. Dain glanced between them with a slight smile.
"I know the look of two who have found One." He said with a grin at the pair. "I take it Thorin approves?" He asked glancing at his still unconscious cousin. Tauriel frowned down at her hands. Kili caught her hand with a grin.
"He promised her a place in Erebor when it was retaken, as my place is by her side." A smile broke over Tauriel's face and even across the room as he was Fili could practically feel the relief rolling off of her. Dain nodded.
"Good, now what's this about a fourteenth member of the company. I see why Thorin sought out another member, frightfully lucky number fourteen. But who are they?" He asked turning back to Fili.
"Wait, wasn't Bella with you?" Tauriel asked and Fili frowned, glancing at his brother.
"You know how hard it is to keep an eye on her. We were separated. Last I heard her was atop Raven Hill. I don't know what happened. I found Thorin and Azog immediately after I heard her last I had no time to search." Fili said as Kili shot him a look.
"Thorin's gonna kill us." Kili said and Dain raised an eyebrow.
"From what I've heard there was something happening on the gate shortly before we arrived but I'm going to need details." Fili glanced over at Thorin who still hadn't moved. Oin was looking him over.
"She's his One." Kili said and Dain blinked. In a moment he was on his feet.
"I'll be back in a minute to get the whole story but I'm sending out a search party now. Raven Hill you said?" He asked and Fili nodded. Kili flopped back onto the pillows and shook his head.
"We are dead men Fi." He deadpanned and Fili nodded.
"At least you met your one, I haven't met them yet!" Tauriel laughed slightly.
"I think you both might be underestimating Miss Baggins. She eluded Thranduil and myself for at least a week without us ever even knowing." Tauriel pointed out.
"That's part of what I'm worried about." Fili pointed out. Dain reentered the tent shaking his head.
"What's this about evading Thranduil for a full week without ever raising suspicions? I think I'm going to like her, is she a Dwarrowdam?" He asked and Kili shook his head.
"She's a Hobbit and a good bit of trouble, you're going to adore her. Nori loves her and she's got Ori wrapped around her finger. Thorin looks at her like she laid the gold in the hills herself." Dain laughed.
"Well I don't know what a Hobbit is but I must meet this woman!" He said with a slight laugh. "Tell me more."
Thorin woke in a haze of pain. His head hurt, his whole body ached but his foot felt like it was on fire. Something was pressed to his lips and he coughed drinking fresh clear water down in several long gulps.
"Easy now, not too much. I don't fancy you making yourself sick." The voice was familiar.
"Oin?" Thorin blinked, the old dwarf's face coming into focus. He smiled.
"Good to see the blue of your eyes again Thorin." He said and Thorin tried to push himself up on his pillows. A hand at his shoulder stopped him and he looked up into Dwalin's face. The tent came into full focus and Thorin did a quick head count. Thirteen dwarves were here, cut off from the rest of the tent by curtains that were pulled shut. Kili's elf was back, sitting next to him on his bed, one hand on his shoulder to keep him from attempting to rise. His leg was heavily bandaged. Fili was on a cot next to his brother, a bandage peering out from under his hair but otherwise unhurt. Oin held out the cup again and Thorin drank deeply, trying to clear the dust and blood of the battle from his throat.
"It's good to see you awake. We feared we'd lost you." Balin said stepping up next to Dwalin who smiled lightly. Thorin managed to clear his throat.
"Bella?" Several of the dwarves present exchanged glances. Thorin's heart sank. Fili looked wildly guilty. "Where is she?" He managed through the lump in his throat. Silence rang through the tent. Fili looked down at his hands but he was the one to speak.
"She hasn't been found." He said in a small voice. Thorin tried to pull himself up off the bed but the pain in his foot flared and he let out a muffled scream of pain.
"Why aren't we out looking?" He asked his voice breaking as Dwalin kept a hand on his shoulder to keep him from trying to rise again.
"Thorin." Dwalin said and Thorin turned to look at him. "You've been out cold for near four days. We have been looking. She's vanished." Sniffles sounded from Ori where he sat across the room, his arm in a sling.
