"Last time on Total Drama Island, twenty-two campers have signed up to spend the next eight weeks right here on Jabberwock Island, then have to face the judgment of their fellow campers."
...
"It's the first challenge, right? It can't be that hard."
...
"Oh, fuck."
Episode One, Part Two: Not-So Happy Students
The episode opened up back on the cliff, where the bathing suit-clad campers stared at Chris in horror.
"Okay!" Chris announced. "Today's challenge is three-fold! Your first task is to jump off this one-thousand-foot high cliff, into the lake."
"Piece of cake," Rantaro said, nonchalant.
"Um, I don't think you realize how high this cliff is..." Kaede commented.
"If you look down, you'll see two target areas," Chris continued, prompting both Kaede and Rantaro to look down the cliff. The camera then panned down to show what they were looking at—a large ring of buoys surrounding a second, much smaller ring of buoys.
"The wider part represents the part of the lake that we have stocked with psychotic, haha, man-eating sharks!" To prove Chris's claim, a few shark fins could be seen poking out of the water as the large fish swam underneath.
A few of the campers physically recoiled just from the sight.
"Inside that area is a safe zone," Chris explained, "That's your target area. Which, we're pretty sure, is shark-free."
CONFESSIONAL - KAEDE:
She gave the camera a look. "Um, what? Who approved of this?"
The scene flashed back to the cliff, and Chris continued on with the challenge explanation.
"For each member of your team that jumps and actually...survives, there will be a crate of supplies waiting below. Inside each create are supplies that you'll need for the second part of the challenge...building a hot tub! The team with the best one gets to have a wicked hot tub party tonight! The losers, will be sending someone home."
Chris looked between the two teams. "Let's see...Killer Bass! You're up first!"
Leon stared down the high cliff, wincing at the drop. "So, uh, who wants to go first?"
"I'll jump!" Tenko volunteered immediately.
Without any hesitation, she jumped off the cliff, successfully landing in the safe zone. Not too long after, a boat came and took her to shore.
"Hey, that kinda looks like fun!" Yasuhiro exclaimed. Making his way to the edge of the cliff, he jumped, and...
landed on a buoy.
A considerable amount of people cringed at the semi-fail (as he still managed to land inside of the safe zone) as Yasuhiro groaned in pain and slid into the water.
Makoto felt a tap on his head, and he turned his head to a smiling Sayaka. "Wanna jump together, Makoto?"
Makoto offered an embarrassed smile in return. "Oh, um, sure!"
Holding hands, the duo jumped off the cliff together. They both landed in the safe zone.
"...What?" Kazuichi stared at the scene that had just unfolded, dumbfounded. "How did Average Joe already score a chick?!" His face then turned into a scowl, and he scoffed. "Hmph. You know what? I'll show them." He turned to his team. "I'm jumping next!"
The boy tried to take a running start, but he tripped over a rock in the process, unwittingly launching himself off the cliff. He screamed as soon as he realized what was happening, and even more when he noticed the shark waiting for him below, jaws wide open.
However, due to the velocity Kazuichi had gained from the fall, he hit the shark head-on, sending both of them into the water. The boy didn't resurface, which elicited gasps and looks of concern from the campers.
"Hey, is someone going to help him?!" A horrified Kaede asked Chris.
"Relax," Chris replied as if nothing was wrong. "He's fine." A few moments passed. "...Probably. Uh, can someone get the infirmary?"
CONFESSIONAL - KAZUICHI:
He had various bruises on his body, most of them covered with bandages. He also looked rather disheveled. "...Is it too late to back out of the competition now?"
"Alright, now that's taken care of... Who's next?" Chris asked, looking at the nearest Bass, who happened to be Hiyoko.
"Not me!" she refused. "I don't wanna die!"
"We'll probably lose if you don't jump, though," Leon pointed out.
"He's right," Junko agreed.
"It's only one person," Hiyoko replied. "Plus, I'm sure most of the people on the other aren't even going to jump. I mean, have you seen pig barf?" She thumbed back towards a distracted Mikan.
"Maybe," Junko admitted. "But better safe than sorry. You're jumping."
"Make me."
"Okay."
Hiyoko's defiant attitude quickly turned into confusion as she felt herself growing further and further from the ground as Junko picked her up, holding the small girl above her head.
"Wha— Hey! Put me down!" Hiyoko cried.
"Sorry, no can do," Junko refused. "We've got a challenge to win."
With those parting words, Junko threw Hiyoko down the cliff before jumping off herself. Both girls landed in the safe zone.
When Hiyoko resurfaced, she glared at Junko, who only responded with a smile.
"Ooh, Ibuki wants to go next!" Ibuki volunteered.
Ibuki dived off the cliff, performing a canonball as she did so, making a big splash when she hit the water. A few of her team members cheered at Ibuki's feat.
"...I wish to forefeit from the jump," Celestia told Chris when it was her turn.
"Scared of heights?" Chris assumed.
"Not quite," Celestia replied. "You see, I have this thing called "self-preservation," so unfortunately, I will not be jumping at his time."
"Are you sure you want to forefeit?" Chris confirmed. "Your teammates are counting on you."
Celestia nodded. "Positive."
"Alright," Chris said. "Unfortunately, that also makes you a chicken. So, you'll have to wear this for the rest of the day." Chris slapped a chicken-shaped hat onto on Celestia's head, the hat making a squeak in the process.
"How...lovely," Celestia commented, her voice sarcastic.
"The chicken path is thataway," Chris said, pointing to an escalator that led down the cliff.
CONFESSIONAL - CELESTIA:
She had an indifferent expression on her face as she fiddled with her chicken hat. "I suppose this is a small price to pay in order to keep myself alive and unscathed."
"Meet you at the bottom?" Leon asked his only other teammate on the cliff, Mondo.
"Hell yeah, man," Mondo replied, offering a grin.
Leon returned the grin before jumping off, followed by Mondo soon after. They both managed to land in the safe zone.
"All right, let's tally up the results..." Chris said, pulling out a clipboard. "That was...ten jumpers and one chicken." He then turned towards the other team. "Gophers, if you can beat that, we'll throw in a pull-cart to put your crates on."
"Nice," Rantaro commented. He turned back to his team. "Who wants to jump first?"
"Ooh! Ooh! I'll go!" An enthusiastic Kokichi volunteered. Before anyone could react, he dived off the cliff and into the safe zone. "Whee!"
"I guess I'll jump next, then," Rantaro shrugged. With that, he jumped, also landing into the safe zone.
Both Ryoma and Maki jumped respectively, landing into the safe zone.
Shuichi hesitantly looked down the cliff. "Um, I'm not too sure about this..."
"Hey, what's wrong?" Kaito asked, walking up next to Shuichi. He chuckled and jokingly asked, "Don't tell me you're scared or something?"
"Um, yeah, actually..." Shuichi awkwardly scratched his head. "I kinda am..."
After a beat, Kaito gave the other boy a wide grin. "Okay, how about this? We'll count to three, then we'll jump together, yeah?"
"Okay..." Shuichi replied, though he sounded unsure.
With Kaito behind him, a still reluctant Shuichi neared the cliff.
"You ready?" Kaito asked him.
"I guess..."
Kaito gave him a firm clasp on the shoulder. "Hey, either you're ready or you're not."
"I mean... Y-Yeah. Yeah, I'm ready..." He turned and gave Kaito a small—abeit nervous—smile as confirmation.
"That's what I'm talkin' about!" Kaito exclaimed. "Alright! One... Two... Three!"
Shuichi and Kaito jumped off the cliff—with Shuichi screaming the whole way down—and they both landed into the safe zone.
"See?" Kaito grinned at Shuichi, as the two resurfaced. "Nothing to worry about."
"Let's do this!" Kaede exclaimed, getting herself pumped up. She took a running start before jumping off the cliff, followed by Kirumi doing a graceful dive down.
"Just keep your eyes closed, just keep your eyes closed..." Komaru chanted to herself as she jumped off the cliff. "Crap, I didn't keep my eyes clooooooosed!" She managed to land inside of the safe zone, luckily.
Mikan peered down the cliff before turning to Chris. "Wow, um... That's really high..."
"You can chicken out if you want," Chris replied. "But it'll end up costing your team the win... And then they'll hate you."
"W-Wait! I-I don't want anyone to hate meeeeeeeee!" Mikan dived off the cliff in a panic, and managed to land in the safe zone.
"Okay, campers!" Chris announced through a megaphone, presumably so those at the bottom of the cliff could hear him. "There's only one person left! The Gophers need this jump for the win!" Lowering her microphone, he turned to that person, Toko. "No pressure."
"Yeah, of course th-there's no pressure," Toko replied. "I'm n-not jumping."
"Are you really sure you wanna do that?" Chris asked. "If you don't jump, that means the Bass win—and they win the advantage."
Toko's response was an eye-roll. "Wh-Whatever. I'm not going to risk my life for s-some stupid reward that probably won't even matter in the end a-anyway."
"Hey, it's your loss," Chris shrugged, giving Toko her chicken hat. She quickly scurried down the cliff afterwards.
"And the winner is..." Chris spoke, making use the megaphone again, as the campers looked up in anticipation. "No one! It ended in a tie! Which means both teams will have to push their crates to the beach by hand!"
That announcement elicited groans and moans from the campers as the scene faded out to commercial.
The scene faded back in, and the contestants were now dressed in their regular clothing and currently trying to transport their items to the beach.
The camera focused in on Leon, who was struggling to push a crate with Mondo. "What the hell's in here? Rocks?"
Clearly, pushing it this way isn't fucking working," Mondo snapped at him. "Here, let me try something."
Leon shrugged, stepping away from the crate. "Whatever gets the crates to the beach faster."
Mondo stood in front of the large crate, a determined look on his face. He then lifted his leg up and gave it a swift and firm kick.
Fortunately, it did move at a faster pace. Unfortunately, Mondo miscalculated his kick's direction and the ended up hitting a nearby tree, cracking the crate open.
"...I didn't mean to do that," Mondo said, scratching the back of his neck in embarrassment.
"Well, guess that's one less crate we have to worry about opening," Leon said. "We do have to worry about getting all of those parts to the beach, though..."
Leon and Mondo exchanged a glance.
"Not it!" Leon shouted.
Before Mondo could stop him, Leon sped off to catch up with the rest of his teammates.
"Hey, get back here, you piece of shit!" Mondo yelled after him. "You were pushing this crate, too!"
However, Leon showed no signs of returning, so after cursing under his breath, Mondo went to collect the parts himself.
The focus then changed over to the Gophers.
"Even if neither team won, I'd still say that diving challenge was pretty fun," Kaito said as he pushed his crate.
"Speak for yourself..." Komaru replied, shuddering at the mere thought of the challenge.
"Aw, come on!" Kaede exclaimed. "Sure, it was scary at first, but you were, like, halfway down it was kinda fun! But, geez, these crates are heavy... The pull-carts would've been nice."
"Yeah, it would've," Maki interjected, glaring at Toko.
"Hey, if you wanna die, that's on y-you," Toko replied. "Plus, it's not like the other team got the p-pull-carts either."
"Hey, I think I see the beach!" Komaru exclaimed, pointing at some palm trees in the distance.
"Finally..." Toko muttered.
Both teams arrived at the beach at roughly the same time, and were ready to start building their hot tubs.
"Remember, you guys can only use your teeth to open the crates," Chris announced as he drove past on an ATV. He then smiled at the camera. "I came up with that one."
"The fuck you mean, "remember?" Mondo gritted. "You never told us that in the first place!"
"I didn't?" Chris asked before shrugging it off. "Oh well. Now you know." With a chuckle, he drove off, leaving the campers to state in disbelief.
"Well, that's just great!" Hiyoko huffed, stomping her tiny foot. "How are we supposed to get these stupid crates open with just our teeth?!"
"Hey, hey," Junko interjected, trying to calm Hiyoko down. "It can't be that hard. All we gotta do is find someone with, like, the strongest set of teeth, right?"
"Ooh! Ooh! Pick Ibuki!" Ibuki exclaimed, waving her arm wildly. "Every dentist Ibuki's had have said Ibuki had very strong teeth! Probably because Ibuki usually ends up biting them."
"Um, on accident, right...?" Sayaka asked nervously.
Ibuki scratched her head. "Um... Sometimes?"
"Ah. That's...nice," Sayaka replied, taking two steps away from Ibuki.
CONFESSIONAL - IBUKI:
She gave the camera a look. "It's not Ibuki's fault that Ibuki's dentists' have very bitable fingers!"
"Ahem," Junko interrupted. "Kinda in the middle of a challenge here."
"Right, right! Okay, let Ibuki handle this!" Ibuki slid over to a crate, viciously chewing the corner with her mouth until the crate popped open. "Got it!"
"Awesome job, Ibuki!" Tenko cheered.
"Yeah, you go, girl!" Junko agreed.
Within five minutes, Ibuki had opened all of the Bass's crates—barring the one Mondo broke earlier.
Meanwhile, the Gophers just stared at their crates, wondering how the heck they were supposed to get them open with just their teeth.
"Um, anyone have any ideas?" Kaede asked. Shrugs and murmurs were her only responses. "...Right."
"Wait..." Ryoma spoke up, "couldn't we use rope or something and tie it around the lid of the crate so it it'll be easier to open?"
"Oh y-yeah!" Mikan nodded. "And we could use our teeth to pull the rope!"
"Where would we even get rope from?" Komaru asked.
"I believe there is a market around here," Kirumi replied. "Perhaps they have rope there?"
"Oh, yeah!" Kaede nodded. "Rocketpunch Market, right?"
"Leave it to me, then!" Kaito volunteered. "I'll be back before you can say, "Luminary of the Stars!"
With that, Kaito dashed off towards the market and came back about five minutes later, carrying a bundle of ropes in his arms.
"Nice work, Kaito!" Kaede commended. "So, who's gonna open the crates?"
"I'll do it!" Kaito immediately volunteered.
CONFESSIONAL: KAITO:
"I like to think I have the strongest set of teeth out of everyone on my team," he explained. "Plus, it gives me a chance to show off to the ladies."
He flexed his muscle and chuckled.
Kaito tied the rope around one of the crates, and put the ends in his mouth. Using his teeth, he pulled until the crate gave way, popping open.
"Nice work!" Kaede exclaimed. "Once we get the rest of these open, we can finally start building the hot tub!"
"We've got blueprints," Leon said, as the focus changed over to the Bass. He pulled out a large, folded blue sheet of paper. Unfolding it, a detailed schematic of the hot tub could be seen.
"That looks boring," Kazuichi scoffed as he snatched the blueprints from Leon, looking them over. "I bet I could make it way better."
"Oh, yeah?" Leon scoffed back. "And how exactly are you gonna do that?"
Kazuichi chuckled. "Glad you asked." Pulling out a wrench and screwdriver from the pockets of his jumpsuit, brandishing the tools at Leon. "I'm gonna build something so spectacular, it'll knock the pants off of everyone in a fifty kilometer radius!"
Leon raised an eyebrow. "Which is...?"
"You'll see," Kazuichi assured. "But first, I gotta get some supplies the market. Be right back!"
With that, Kazuichi zoomed off towards the market.
CONFESSIONAL - LEON:
"I'm not gonna lie, I was kinda interested to see where Kazuichi was going with this," he admitted. "Whether or not it actually improves our hot tub, though, is the question."
The camera skipped ahead and panned back over to the Gophers, who were now working on their hot tub.
Maki reached inside a crate to grab a hammer, but another hand latched onto her wrist before she could. She turned her head to glare at the culprit. "What are you doing?"
The culprit turned out to be Kokichi, who responded with, "Hey, let me use that hammer!"
Maki narrowed her eyes at him. "And why would I do that?"
"It's the only one left!" Kokichi replied.
"Well, I grabbed it first," Maki said. "You'll either have to wait or find another one."
"But waiting is boring!" Kokichi whined. He tried to take the hammer, but Maki grabbed it as well, which resulted in a wrestle for the tool. It ended in Maki kneeing Kokichi in the crotch, causing him to crumple to the ground.
"Yeah..." Kokichi wheezed as Maki walked off. "You can have the hammer..."
A pan over to the Bass showed that they were also working on their hot tub—minus Yasuhiro, who the others decided to kick out of the building process, mostly because he was making their lives harder by talking about fortunes (and just being plain dumb).
With nothing else to do, Yasuhiro walked over to Kazuichi, who was sitting in the sand just a few meters away from the team, and leaned over his shoulder.
"What's that supposed to be?"
"Don't worry about it!" Kazuichi snapped at him, leaning forward to hide his creation. "You'll see when it's ready! Now leave me alone!"
"Okay, jeez," Yasuhiro said, backing up and raising his arms defensively. "Sorry..."
CONFESSIONAL - YASUHIRO
"It feels like everyone treats me like...I don't know, they don't want anything to do with me?" Yasuhiro gave the camera a sad look.
It only lasted for a short while, as it flipped into a goofy grin. "Nah, it's all good!"
A couple hours went by, and eventually, both hot tubs were done and ready for judging.
The teams anxiously stared at Chris as he looked upon the hot tubs, deciding which one to judge first. After a few moments, he decided on the Gophers tub.
He walked around said hot tub, inspecting the construction. He then dipped his finger into the water. "Great temperature, good construction..." Chris turned towards the Gophers. "I'd say this is an A+ hot tub!"
Some of the Gophers cheered in response as Chris walked over to the Bass's hot tub. It looked just as good as the Gophers, and after inspecting it, Chris was about to walk away until Kazuichi spoke up.
"Chris, before you make your final decision..." Kazuichi pulled out a small, white cube and placed it on the back of the hot tub. "Check this baby out!"
Mondo peered at it, before glaring at Kazuichi. "Kazuichi, what the fuck is that?"
"Look," Kazuichi hushed him. He pressed down on the cube, and it unfolded into loudspeakers, which flashed neon colors and blasted party music. It definitely caught awes from most—if not all—of the contestants.
"That is an awesome hot tub, if I've ever seen one!" Chris exclaimed, still captivated by it. "Awesome work, Kazuichi!"
A proud grin on his face, Kazuichi pressed the cube again, and the loudspeakers folded back into the small, white cube it was once before.
"Well," Chris announced, "I think we have a winner here." Chris looked between the two teams, pausing for a moment. "The Killer Bass!"
The Bass broke out into fits of cheer, high-fiving each other in victory.
"Bass," Chris continued, "You're safe from elimination, and get to rock this awesome hot tub for the rest of the summer! Bonus!"
The Bass bursted into another round of cheers as Chris turned to the Gophers with a frown. "Gophers, what can I say? Sucks to be you right now. I'll see your sorry butts at the campfire tonight."
CONFESSIONAL - KOMARU:
"I'm not even sure who I'm gonna vote for..." Komaru admitted, looking nervous. "Toko, maybe? She was complaining a lot."
When sunset hit, the Gophers were all gathered at the campfire pit, a small fire lit ablaze. They were all looking at Chris, who stood before them.
"Gophers," he started. "At camp, marshmallows represent a tasty treat that you enjoy roasting by the fire. At this camp, marshmallows represent life. You've all cast your votes, and made your decision."
The Gophers exchanged nervous glances with each other as Chris gestured to the plate of marshmallows he held in his hand. "There are only ten marshmallows on this plate. When I call your name, come up and claim your marshmallow. The camper who does not receive a marshmallow tonight must immediately return to the Dock of Shame to catch the Boat of Losers. That means, you're out of the contest. And you can't come back. Ever. The first marshmallow goes to...Kaito."
"Kirumi,"
"Kaede,"
"Ryoma,"
"Rantaro,"
"Maki,"
"Komaru,"
"Shuichi,"
"Mikan."
One by one, the campers received their marshmallows as their names were called. Eventually, the plate had only one treat left, and two Gophers were sitting without one.
"Campers, this is the final marshmallow of the evening," Chris announced, looking at Kokichi and Toko. The former had a small grin on his face, while the latter just scowled at Chris. "The final marshmallow goes to..."
...
...
...
...
...
...
...
...
...
...
"Kokichi."
Kokichi jumped up to claim his marshmallow, his grin wider as he turned to Toko. "Like I was even worried."
Toko rolled his eyes at him.
"Can't say I'm shocked," Chris shrugged. "Didn't really do anything but complain." He pointed towards the dock. "Dock of Shame is that way."
"Good, get me out of this st-stupid game," Toko snapped. "I didn't even want to be h-here in the first place."
With those parting words, Toko made her way down the dock and boarded the boat which took her away from the island forever.
"The rest of you," Chris said as turned to the remaining Gophers. "Enjoy your marshmallows. You're all safe. For tonight."
CONFESSIONAL - KAEDE:
"Okay, I'll admit our team started out on a bad note," she admitted, before giggling. "Haha, note. Anyway, I'm sure we'll do better next time. Next challenge, definitely!"
Meanwhile, the Killer Bass were having the time of their lives while they enjoyed the hot tub they created—of course, added with Kazuichi's creation and some snacks.
"Wah-hoo!" Ibuki cheered as she cannon-balled into the hot tub.
"Aw yeah, this is the life," Junko sighed contently as she submerged herself into the hot water.
"Great work, Kaz!" Leon praised, giving Kazuichi a slap on the back. "Thought you were gonna be one of the expendables, but you proved yourself after all."
"Thanks, man," Kazuichi smiled, before realizing what Leon had said. "Wait, what do you mean expendable?"
Before Leon could reply, Sayaka cheered.
"To the Killer Bass!"
Chris stood by the dying fire of the campfire pit. "And so ends the first day at Jabberwock Island. What challenges do we have in store for campers next? Who will be the next camper to walk the Dock of Shame? Find out that, and more, next time on Total! Drama! Island!"
