A/N: Casey's grunts practically formed their own language. Early in "Chuck vs the Crown Vic," Chuck started identifying them. It's great that he understood his spy protector, but what about the rest of us? The Gruntish-English translation dictionary below contains the grunts heard in the show and those cited in other MyNameIsJeffNImLost stories. Hopefully, it helps you understand the NSA agent.

If you want to find out more about this unique guttural language, there's a behind-the-scenes interview with Adam Baldwin, Chris Fedyk, Ryan McPartlin, Linda Hamilton, and Yvonne Strahovski. (youtube: watch?v=H82f-OKKUj8) You could also re-watch the entire series to find things you don't understand. See if you understand better.

This story idea emerged after discussing with WillieGarvin about the grunts in his fantastic epic, "Chuck vs A New Day," chapter 176, the middle of the Sachem arc (the 27th). In that chapter, Chuck grunted. (Chuck did? He must have known what he was saying.) WillieGarvin is the beta of this dictionary. (*thanks*) Don't fear, this dictionary will not disrupt his regular posting pace that started in Fall 2018. (Surgery and Covid are legitimate reasons for delay, while this dictionary is not.)

My big story, "Chuck vs the In Between," will continue to alternate with my other in-progress and new stories. (It'll only be 91 chapters, so it'll be smaller, but it will take a while.) This story will continue with more translations periodically as In Between gets to various points.

Disclaimer 1: This dictionary is for translating the sounds that Casey uttered and is not about military infantry.

Disclaimer 2: While WillieGarvin was beta, "Gruntish" is tricky, so he and I might have missed something. If you PM me issues, I'll fix them. There's no expiration date.

Disclaimer 3: We don't own Chuck. Nobody else owns anything here, so why would we? Casey has something to say about the ownership of Chuck: *grunt*.

from "Chuck vs the Crown Vic" (1x11), aka the first of two consecutive episodes of "Chuck vs Casey's girlfriend"

Chuck started out of the Buy More towards Wienerlicious. The sky was clear, but it didn't feel that way to him. Sarah's car wasn't in the parking lot. He missed her.

Casey quietly came up behind him. It always amazed Chuck how a person so big could move so stealthily, spy or not. His Buy More co-worker said, "Decided to take up bird watching?"

"Just breathing in the view."

*grunt*

Casey didn't buy it, so Chuck came back with, "I know that grunt. Yeah, that's the number seven, right? Skeptical with a side of cynicism."

"Just clearing my throat. Also couldn't help but notice, Agent Walker's car isn't in her usual spot."

Going on the offensive didn't work. Chuck rambled a defense. "Oh... I didn't, uh… It's weird. I didn't even notice. I didn't even see that, at all."

*grunt*

That wasn't much of one. "Fine. Maybe I did. So, have you talked to Sarah lately?"

Casey wasn't done with grunting after his Crown Vic was destroyed, so this dictionary will periodically be updated.
