"You are Peter, member of the X-Force, you can do this."
Peter repeated this to himself constantly in front of the mirror to diminish his fears. Wade and Spiderman had gone on vacation, leaving him in charge of Queens. Spiderman had given him a list of his main villains and what to do in case they attacked in the week they were gone. Deadpool had mocked Spider-Man for how precisely he had crafted his instruction manual on Spider-Man villains and what to do if they throw a tantrum.
"Your villains aren't babies, Spidey."-Deadpool had told him.
"Sometimes they really do, Wade," Spider-Man answered. "You don't know how Mysterio gets when he has one of his tantrums."
"Let Peter deal with them in his own way. If he finds himself in trouble or he can't handle the situation, he can call in the rest of the X-Force or the X-Men for backup" Wade said. "You need vacation, Spidey. Evil may not rest, but superheroes do, or they'll pummel their villains more than they deserve. Like Batman."
"I don't need vacations, Wade." Spiderman replied.
But the discussion had stopped there. Everyone, heroes and villains, knew that Spider-Man needed a break, but he was too stubborn to accept it. He must be something characteristic of heroes. Now, when he was completely alone, Peter was grateful for the manual. God. He did not know what to do. He had always dreamed of saving the city alone, just like Spiderman did. Only now did he realize the enormous responsibility that he possessed.
The drug dealers ignored him and he had had to call the police.
The robbers laughed at him to his face.
The Avengers wouldn't answer his phone and he couldn't ask them for help.
He needed to rescue the cats from the trees just like Spiderman did, but he was afraid of heights and the owner had had to call the fire department to rescue him and her cat, meanwhile the neighbors were taking photos of him that, Peter knew, they would end up on social media and probably in the news. This had happened three times and the firefighters had scolded him the third time, for climbing up places he didn't know how to get down from.
And it had been less than six hours since Spiderman and Deadpool had left. Dopinder took him to all the places in Queens where there was an alert, but despite that, he was not as fast as Spiderman and some criminal escaped him. Peter didn't think he could last like this all week. He felt like crying, but the day wasn't over yet. To make matters worse, the Sinister Six had appeared, wreaking havoc in the city, demanding to fight Spiderman, when they found out that he was not in the city, they were really furious. Peter took out the manual that Spiderman had prepared for him and searched for what to do in case his villains have a tantrum. He had to admit that Spiderman had put all his effort into preparing the manual. Each villain had the record made of him, from topics that could or could not be discussed with him, to the powers they had or the information that was or was not acceptable for them to know. But with his nerves, Peter couldn't think straight.
"And where is Spiderman supposed to be?" Rhino asked.
"He left with Deadpool," Peter replied.
Apparently, he was wrong to say it. It was curious that in the manual he put that the villains, although they were scary, deep down, they were nice and understanding. Well, Peter didn't think so. He believed that Spider-Man was somehow laughing at him or minimizing the danger of the situation. His villains were scary… a lot. Peter was ready to tell them all the secrets of his life if that was necessary, in order to placate his mood. The manual had been forgotten, now it was necessary to save his life. He looked for exits, but realized that he was surrounded.
"What do you mean Deadpool and Spiderman are gone?" Scorpion asked. "Alone? Where exactly?"
His stinger was getting dangerously close to Peter. Peter was ready to plead for his life. He forced himself to look the villain in the face and, though he stuttered a bit, he was proud of himself for standing up to him.
- They're on vacation, at Comic Con.-Peter replied.
"He hadn't told me anything!" -Octopus began to dictate a diatribe that Peter had completely ignored, more concerned about the tentacles that lashed out wildly without a fixed objective.-"You'll see when his aunt finds out!"
Peter would swear to anyone that Octopus, in addition to being completely furious or outraged, or maybe both, was smiling sinisterly. Maybe he should call Spiderman to tell him what he should do now, but he didn't want to spoil his vacation. Seeing that they weren't going to get any more information out of him, the Sinister Six walked away, muttering something about setting up an alert to know exactly where the boy was at all times. Peter watched as they took out their cell phones and texted someone. Peter wasn't interested, he just wanted to go unnoticed so he could get out of there. It would be later, around ten o'clock at night, when he was already in bed, when he received a call from an incensed Deadpool asking him why Venom had shown up at Comic Con, much to the surprise of all his followers who were lining up to ask for a photo. and how Venom knew where they were.
Wade hung up before Peter could answer, yelling like a girl because The Vulture and Mysterio had suddenly appeared and were taking the spotlight away from him. Peter went back to sleep, glad that he had asked Dominic and Nathan to do the night shift. He never imagined waking up and finding himself there with Steve Rogers, Captain America, holding a copy of The Bugle, asking for explanations for his lack of discretion. Peter didn't know how to act. There was a solemnity about the man that made him want to snap to attention in his presence. He wasn't prepared for this situation, and how had he gotten in? He hoped Rogers hadn't broken down or forced the door.
"Cobwebs encourages elderly neighbors to act recklessly"
He was the headline! He was on the cover! And there was a photo of him up a tree and crying while the firemen rescued him. One moment. Was the headline implying that he was old?
"Well?" Rogers asked. "Do you have something to say?"
- I was very scared.-Peter said sincerely.
Rogers looked at him strangely. Okay! We can't all be super soldiers, or save cats from trees! Peter would like to see the headlines of The Bugle or other newspapers, because it seemed that The Bugle only messed with Spiderman and not with the Avengers, when Captain America retired and there was only one man without armor trying to fight crime! Totally unarmed and without imposing any presence!
The alarm clock sounded, startling Rogers. Peter got up, a little pissed off at The Captain for not answering the phone when he needed help and showing up at his house for a headline.
- It's my second day of surveillance.-Peter said.-I'm going to get ready.
Rogers walked out of there without even saying goodbye. No wonder Deadpool complained about how rude he was. At least now he knew that the ones who were going to back him up were the X-Force and the X-Men. Peter would have to talk to Spiderman about the danger that the Avengers were exposing him by denying him their support. But he would first have to survive the rest of the week.
