Always 6
Monday started with a homicide investigation, it was now 6pm and they hadn't gotten very far. The first victim was female, blonde and under 30 she was found on the Saturday morning by a soccer mom, the second found on Sunday by a vicar and the third on Monday morning by a dog walker. They had been picked up from night clubs by fake Ubers. If they were right, there would be another murder tonight and it was frustrating them all. Jay shot a text to Hayley to see if they were all ok and telling her he wouldn't be home till late, her reply was short, but he assumed she was busy with the kids so left her to it. Kim had called and asked her to keep Mikayla for the night, the faster they figured this out the quicker they all went home. Jay ended up not coming home choosing to crash on the couch in the breakroom. Kim came in with coffee for the team for it to be left on their desks. The killer struck again; this time she had a note pinned to her chest.
Sophie was a blonde 27-year-old who attended CCU. She had sat her final exam on Friday and the girls from her apartment share encouraged her to go out drinking with them. They all left at midnight on Monday, but Sophie left her coat behind, so she caught a different Uber. The killer had sprayed an invisible mist into the cars backseat that knocked her unconscious. He had taken her to a secluded spot, raped her and beat her. He left her to die on the beach, on the Tuesday morning a street cleaner found her. Unfortunately for him he was recorded on the Pod cams as he left the area.
'Her friends left her alone, its ok I showed her a good time, she enjoyed every second of it.'
The note read; he was starting to play games with them. Wednesday came with no new body for this they were thankful, but they were still frustrated. Adam was working on the phone he found on Sophie when Trudy came up from downstairs.
"Chuckles, line two, a tech wants your email, says he found some pictures you need. I am pinching some coffee we are all out downstairs." Kim chuckled and Platt walked past Jay's desk as he replied.
"Its Detective Chuckles thank you! Hello."
"Is this Jay Halstead? I have some pictures you need to see. They keep bouncing back though."
"Ok so yeah its " he waited for the pictures to come through. The ones that came sent shivers down his spine, he felt the blood drain from his face, he clicked his fingers at Adam and Kim.
"Who are these off" he manged to sound neutral
"Come on Detective, don't play games, isn't she beautiful!" the voice on the line was sickly "I can't believe you left her alone last night, when there is a killer on the loose. She is stunning, I bet you have thought about banging her a few times. I know I knocked a few out last night, then again this morning, she's so easy on the eye. Tick tock Detective get to her before I do." The line dropped as he pulled his phone out of his pocket.
"Get a squad to my house NOW!" He shouted to Trudy; the room had become a hive of activity. Jay was calling Hayley, grabbing his keys to get into his car.
"Hey, you are never going to guess what happened today?" Hayley answered.
"Where are you?" Jay was sharp and to the point. The tone of his voice had Hayley on edge straight away.
"We are at the Zoo? What's wrong? Jay?" Hayley tightened her grip on the stroller and grabbed for Mikayla's hand.
Hayley ended up with Mikayla since the Monday it was now Wednesday, they had decided to go to the Zoo for the day. The day started off with the kids following a trail set up by the Zoo first the tigers then the giraffes and then the penguins, they had decided to get hotdogs for lunch and had just sat on the bench by the Elephants. That's when the day went to pot, Jay had Hayley stay where she was, he was going to go collect her and the kids. Mouse had taught him how to tap into the city pods, so he had put Erin on watching them and jumped into his car. Sweat trickled down his back he wiped his brow as he drove, lights and sirens on full tilt.
"Hey guys we are going to see Daddy soon, Mikayla, Jay is going to come and pick us up, so we can go to the district, we will get to see your mom at work, does that sound fun?" she felt sick something was wrong, Jay was in work mode, and he was scared. Her message tone went off on her phone
'At the gate come too me!'
It was from Jay, something was off though, there was no way even with the lights and sirens on he could have got to them so quick. She hesitated and looked around Jay had said stay put but did he mean at the Zoo or the bench she was sat at.
"Hayley? Are you ok?" Mikayla asked sensing the change in her friend she wrapped herself around Hayley.
"Yeah! I'm excited to go see where your mom works are you?" she tried to change the mood a bit.
Hayley was right to stay where she was Kim rang and Jay had just arrived with patrol to get them. He took Hayley's phone and smashed it promising her a new one when the case was over. She was stunned and just sat in the passenger seat of his truck as the patrol officer went over her car. The kids were excited to see Jay so didn't notice her shaking. She shook all the way to the district, when Kim took the three kids upstairs promising them a visit to see Trudy on the way. Jay made sure they were alone then pulled Hayley into a closet, closing the door behind him. She held on to him as he told her what he could and how it involved her, then she hugged him harder and they kissed until they needed air, slow languid kisses that had they been at home would have led to even slower lingering sex. A noise from outside the door had Jay covering Hayley's mouth. A giggle escaped.
"I want you so bad right now!" Jay whispered to Hayley "This whole case had me on edge and now he has got his eyes on you! You will have to stay here until I can sort something out someone to watch you"
"Are you being serious right now?" She exclaimed she was getting frustrated.
"I'm sorry, look just please do as I say? Are we keeping us quiet?" he asked "I just want to know if I can hold you up there or if we are keeping things quiet for now! I will go with what you need me too!" he looked into her eyes.
"Lets just keep it quiet, for now till this case is over. Ok?"
"Ok let's go!" they headed up the back stairs and into the break room.
The group all stood in the bullpen going over everything they knew so far. Lydia and Jacob had decided they wanted a nap. Mikayla and Hayley were drawing what they had seen at the zoo. Hayley promised that they would go back and have a day at the Zoo.
A text came to Jays phone at 6pm.
'You're not playing fair detective; I'll have to go hunting if you are not going to let me play with my original toy!'
"Fuck! He knows we have her in here." Jay said showing them the message.
"Tough! We can't let her go home; Jay don't even think about it!" Kim snapped.
"What? No, I'm not, He said 'his original toy!' does she know who it is? We need to talk to her" Jay said.
"Erin go with Jay, Kim go sit with the kids," Hank told them. He was aware that Kim and Hayley were friends.
Walking into the break room Jay stopped, the site he saw in front of them was beautiful. Hayley had Jacob on her lap facing her his feet either side of her hips. Jacob's head rested on her right shoulder as he slept, Lydia was lying in the stroller holding Hayley's free hand as Mikayla rocked her. Hayley was humming a tune he couldn't make it out, but it was working on soothing the kids, she looked up and saw Jay and Erin watching her, Jays put his head to the side, silently asking Hayley to follow him. Slowly she placed Jacob in the stroller with his sister and Kim came and sat where she was sitting.
"What's going on?" she asked as she followed Jay into the closest interview room. Erin following her. Jay sat at the table and pushed a photograph toward her, he wasn't showing any signs of malice, but he wasn't looking very happy.
"Do you know this guy, Hayley?" Erin asked.
"No, should I?" she asked looking at the photo and then looked up at Jay. There was something off about the way Erin was looking at her. "I don't understand what's going on. Jay?"
"The last text we received said 'we had his original toy, so he was going to go out hunting' we know he has been following you, so we need to you to look again and tell us who he is." Erin spat out.
"I've looked! I don't know him! I can't tell you a name up if I don't know it, I would tell you if I knew I promise. Look the kids need to go home you can't keep me locked up here all night unless you are arresting me so choose one either arrest me or let me go." She told them.
"Hayley calm down, I'm not letting you go anywhere until he's caught. He also knows you are here; he's watching you, Hayley. The minuet you walk out of here he will snatch you, what if you have the kids with you and he hurts them?" Hayley sat back as Jay spoke to her.
"Ok, I get it I'll stay put, but I honestly don't know who he is, are you sure it's me he's after?" she asked looking at Jay.
"He sent us images of you, so yes it's you he's after. Just go back to the break room I'll have a word with Hank, see if we can get you and the kids to a hotel or something." Jay snapped back at her. He was angry that she wanted to leave when he was trying to keep her safe. Was she thinking about the kids too or just herself?
"Can I use a bathroom?" she asked looking at Jay.
"I'll take you!" Erin chimed up.
"It's ok Erin, I'll take her."
"Do you really not know him? Its ok if you do Hayley. We just want to catch him. The sooner we do the quicker we can go home." Jay pulled her towards him wrapping his arms around her and kissing her head. She lifted her eyes to meet his.
"Jay, I don't know him, ok? I promise I don't. If I go out there you can trail me and then catch him if he tries to grab me. I need my bed Jay I'm tired, the kids need their beds."
"Do you want your bed, or mine?" he asked her with a cheeky smile, she blushed and pulled him closer his mouth finding hers and pushed her against the wall. They kissed until they needed to breath. "I'm sorry, I just need to keep you safe, please let me keep you safe?"
"Jay" Erin's voice came from behind him, "Hank wants you."
"Go back to the break room when you are done?" He kissed her again, Erin had already seen them, so it was pointless trying to hide it.
"Seriously, screwing your boss" Erin sniggered as Jay disappeared round the corner. "It wont last you know, he's like a kid with a shiny new toy, he'll get board and then dump you!"
"Erin, is it? Did you find him the other day?" Erin smirked at Hayley.
"Yeah, in a hooker's bed so I hope you used protection." Hayley new she was after a rise from her, so she didn't answer she just walked into the break room and sat next to Kim. Erin was still watching when Hayley lay her head on Kim's shoulder. Their bond was unbreakable, Hayley now had so much swimming round her head, she just needed to feel grounded. If jay was there, she would be screwing him, Hooker or not that was in the past, for now she was his future, or was she?
