Epilogue
Author's Note: Its done. I've never written an epilogue before. I want to go back to writing Minnesota Miracle Man. The actual Casey/Gordon Fic. Wasnt going to to write this as Casey / Gordon but I kinda have to because of what research I did for adoption. The courts really would prefer it if they got married in order for the adoption to go through.
December 25th 1998 and beyond
Gordon Bombay awoke the next morning to the smell of bacon, eggs, and feet. He only had to glance over at the adjacent sofa to see that Charlie Conway was still sound asleep on the sofa with his legs dangling over the edge.
Gordon smiled at the boy. His son. He could hardly believe it. Charlie had asked him the night before to finish what he had started five years prior. He had warned Charlie that the legal process might take awhile and that it might end up being an adult adoption by the time it was all said and done, but Charlie didn't seem to care. He finally had his family, and that was all that mattered.
Careful not to wake Charlie, Bombay quietly made his way towards the smells of breakfast in the kitchen. As expected, Casey was busy making breakfast for the three of them. Gordon figured that she must have slipped away early that morning to grab some breakfast.
The previous evening, with Charlie wanting to spend Christmas with Bombay and Casey not wanting to spend Christmas alone, Gordon had offered Casey his mother's old bedroom for the night while he and Charlie each took a sofa, so no one had to spend Christmas alone.
"You didn't have to do all this," Gordon said, referring to the mountain of eggs.
Sure, I do. I always make Charlie's breakfast on Christmas. You'll be amazed at the amount of food that boy eats."
Gordon and Casey laughed as their eyes met. Casey immediately blushed and turned back to cooking breakfast. Gordon smiled inwardly at Casey's blushing, remembering the conversation they had the night before . After Charlie had dozed off, he had told Casey that, although not a legal requirement, most judges he knew would be hesitant to sign off on a stepparent adoption if there was no existing relationship between the two parents.
When Casey had asked him what they should do about it, Gordon had taken a leap of faith and kissed her. He wasn't sure if it was the knowledge that she was no longer with Jamie or the fact that it was Christmas Eve, but to his amazement, she not only did not push him away, but she kissed him back.
Gordon poured himself a cup of coffee and started on his letter of resignation to the Junior Goodwill Games. While he had liked his job, he knew his home and family were in Minnesota, and that was where he belonged.
Family.
Gordon smiled at the thought. He finally had a family. He had a son who he loved and who loved him back, and a girlfriend, who maybe in the not too distant future, would become his wife.
Extended family.
All the ducks, along with Ted Orion and his family, would visit later on that afternoon. Every one of them was like extended family to him. Bombay had never been so happy to be wrong in his entire life. When he thought he had no family, he had more than he could even imagine.
Bombay had learned that sometimes what he wanted most in life was right in front of him. He just had to choose to take it.
