Azula lay inside her room rethinking everything that had happened yesterday with her brother, especially the part where Zuko blocked her attack. That was the part that surprised her the most, second to the Agni Kai. Azula thought her attack was the fastest she ever attacked before, but how did he predict it so easily? She remembered her brother being one of the worst Firebender ever in the entire Fire Nation. And a question lingers in her head, how did he do it?
Azula stares into the ceiling of her room as she thinks of every possibility to mess with her brother. But that was until a knock was heard on her door.
"Enter." Azula didn't bother to check the door to see who it was.
Her door opened revealing a guard with a tray of food. "You're breakfast is here, Azula."
Azula gestured to place her food on the table next to her. "Just place it on the table for me."
The guard nodded and did what she requested. Before leaving, the guard turned to her and said, "By the way, the Firelord informed me that he'll be arriving at your room in a couple of minutes."
Azula looked at the guard confused. Why would her brother come to her? Maybe he's there to mock her as she did to him when he was in search of the Avatar. Possibility for revenge for everything she did to him in the past. Karma caught up to her. It looks like
Looking at her food, how was she going to eat? Is this another one of Zuko's psychological torture methods? For her to look at her food in hunger? Azula's hands are still cuffed from yesterday when she was going to attack him. Due to the attempted attack, he placed the cuffs back.
As Azula looks at her food, unfortunately, her brother's tactics seem to be working. But her suffering didn't last long when another knock was heard on her door. This time, her brother stepped into her room.
Zuko looked at her and smiled. "Good morning, Azula."
Azula looked at her brother with a straight face. "Morning."
"I brought chopsticks with me so you can start eating." Zuko pulled the chopsticks out of his pockets.
"Wow. You made me wait for you to arrive so that I can eat." Azula replied with frustration.
"Hehe..." Zuko rubbed the back of his head in shame. "I know and I'm sorry. It's just I don't want you to do anything that could harm yourself and the people around you."
Azula looked at her brother as if he said something stupid. "Pfft. You're making yourself look like a clown. You should talk to Ty Lee. I think you two would make a great couple."
Zuko didn't any offence to his sister's comment. "You know she's outside guarding you, right? Same with Suki? They can probably hear you."
"How am I supposed to know when you haven't said anything about this place?" Azula retorted. "You barely told anything ever since I arrived in this palace."
"I think it's best if we leave it that way," Zuko replied facing away from her. In his head, he thought his plan was going to be easy, but it looks harder in real life. He has to ease the tension that seems to be generating between them. "Uhh... Here. Take the chopsticks and I'll release you from the shackles."
"It's about time, Zuzu. My wrist is starting to get sore." Azula replied.
Zuko pulled the key out of his pockets and inserted it into the lock, twisting it to unlock the cuffs on his sister's wrist. As soon as the cuffs fell to the floor, Azula moved her wrists around gaining back her movements. Azula then stretched her arms as much as possible with a moan of satisfaction.
Azula received the chopsticks and grabbed her mean from the table. Azula dug into her meal on her bed as Zuko sat down on the chair across from his sister. Zuko can tell that Azula barely ate while she was outside the Fire Nation. Azula was eating as fast as possible while not giving a single care in the world if she was being rude and disgusting. He was glad that she was eating though. He knew that being an outcast and being popular for the wrong reason is hard when it comes to searching for food. That could be the reason why she had to steal food from people's houses at night so that people won't discover her.
If Zuko wanted to change his sister's attitude, he might as well start right now. "So. How are you feeling right now? Does your wounds still hurt?"
Azula didn't bother to look away from her bowl. "It still hurts to move."
"I wish I could bring some Waterbenders, but they still don't want to come close to you," Zuko replied with a sigh.
"As they should," Azula replied. "And I don't think that's going to change anytime soon."
"C'mon, Azula. Try and at least be nice to people. Threatening people into doing what you want isn't the right way. All you have to do is just to ask nicely and they'll do it without a problem."
"Clearly, you don't know what you're saying." Azula slide the bowl to the side and crossed her arms at her brother. "I'm surprised you made yourself Fire Lord when you don't know how to control people."
"No. It's clear that you don't know how to treat people." Zuko replied looking into his sister's eyes, trying his best to get his sister to understand him. "Azula, when it comes to people, you don't have to always trust a person into talking or asking them for a favour."
"But you know that they'll betray you as soon as you turn your back on them." Azula stood up from her bed and sat down on the chair across from Zuko with the table separating them. Azula rested her head on her hand as she replied with a smirk, "You know deep down that I'm right."
Zuko knew that she was right, but a lot has changed ever since the war came to an end and a lot of good has come into the Fire Nation. "Yes, you are right, but-"
"So there you go! You admit it, I was right! End of discussion." Azula put her hands up to prove her point until her brother put her hand up to stop her from talking anymore further.
"But, you didn't let me finish though. I was going to say that people are not always going to be betraying you. All you have to do is to be nice to the person you're talking to and they'll do what you want them to do. The same goes for talking to other people. By the way, I'm talking from experience here."
"It shows that you've never been betrayed before."
"And you know the reason why?" Zuko asked as he looks at his sister.
"Tell me," Azula replied as she did the same back to Zuko.
"It's because I'm being nice."
Azula lay on her bed and since she has nothing to do, she continued to stare at the ceiling again with her arms resting on the back of her head. Judging from looking at the window next to her, it's only midday and Zuko was nice enough to give her a break from her cuffs because as she mentioned before, she said that her wrist was starting to give her red marks. Without them, she was able to have more freedom inside her cell.
While staring, Azula's mind went back to that conversation that she had with her brother about 'Being nice to others'. She can't believe her brother believes in such nonsense. Azula lay on her side and growled in frustration. It sounds so stupid to her. She can't imagine everyone doing that. She must not change or otherwise, she'll become soft and people will easily manipulate her. A great example Azula could think of was King Kuei, the king of Ba Sing Se. If it wasn't for him being so soft, Long Feng wouldn't have manipulated him.
Scoffing at her brother's stupid logic, Azula remembered that Zuko said that two guards were standing outside her door. Maybe it's time to play around with them. It's only midday, so why not have a little fun?
Azula stood up from her bed and walked towards the door. Her door had a slider around the eye area but unfortunately, only the people from the other side can open it. So to get the girl's attention, she had to knock on the door.
Azula knocked on the door a little too hard, but she didn't register it. Soon after, she heard movement near the door and a recognisable voice came by. "Yes, Azula?"
"Ahh! Is that the voice of Suki, the leader of the Kyoshi Warriors I hear?" Azula replied in a tone that made her sound nice but at the same time sinister.
"Yep, that's me," Suki replied. "Is there anything you need?"
"Do you mind opening the eye thingy so that I can see you two?" Azula asked in the same tone as before.
Before she received a response, Azula heard quiet chatter from the other side of the door. She can hear the voices of both Ty Lee and Suki as they both quietly chatter with each other without Azula understanding a single word they're saying. From the sound of it, Ty Lee seems hesitant to open the slider, but Suki wanted to open it either way.
Seconds later, Azula heard the slider open. On the other side of the door, she was met with a girl with Kyoshi like make-up. Azula wasn't able to see her full body other than her face, but it was better than not seeing her at all.
"Suki! It's been so long!" Azula said through the slider. "How have you been?"
Suki looked at her with suspicion. She was well aware that Azula's all about mind games. "I've been great. How 'bout you?"
"I could be better honestly," Azula replied. "If it wasn't for my stupid brother, I could be living my best life right now."
"I know, Azula. But sometimes, life isn't always fair to its people." Suki replied with a warm smile. "You just have to go with the flow."
Deep down, Azula knew that Suki is right but didn't want to show it. "I guess you're right."
Azula has seen everything inside her room and now, she wants to see what's outside. Looking around, her eyes stumble upon one of her closest friends, Ty Lee. She can be seen wearing her usual Kyoshi Warrior uniform. Looking at her, Azula felt a great surge of hatred boiling up inside her. Just looking at Ty Lee just sends her back to the Boiling Rock where she betrayed her by Chi Blocking. That was a moment that Azula wasn't going to forget.
Ty Lee noticed Azula looking at her with an unreadable face causing the innocent girl to feel uncomfortable. Ty Lee felt like leaving and not coming back due to the stare but then felt a hand come to hers. Looking at her hand, she noticed that Suki intertwine her hands with hers. Ty Lee looked up and saw Suki give her a warm smile making the nervous girl smile in return, making her feel a little relaxed.
But all that relaxation came to a quick end when Azula spoke with a venomous voice. "Ty Le... The second girl to ever betray me in the Boiling Rock."
Ty Lee stepped back in fear as Azula's stare burned into her face. The innocent girl let go of Suki's hand and wrapped her arms around her body trying her best to comfort herself from the monster. She even looked down on the ground but it wasn't helping.
Suki noticed the discomfort of her friend. She knew that she feared Azula ever since her father trained her to become a weapon.
Forming a frown on her face, Azula continued, "Look at you. I'm surprised this pathetic waste of oxygen is friends with you. How can you consider yourself a Kyoshi Warrior if you can't handle me looking at me? You might as well go back to the circus if you're going to act like this."
"Azula!" Suki yelled feeling bad for her partner. Nobody deserves to hear whatever just Azula said. "How could you say that?! Do you know much Ty Lee cares about you?!"
Azula looked at Suki with no interest at all. She didn't hear a single word Suki has said to her. Almost as if she didn't say anything. Doesn't anyone in this castle know that she doesn't care if she hurts anyone's feelings? It's common knowledge at this point. Anything you try to prove to Azula, most likely she will ignore.
Couldn't bear looking at Azula, Suki looked back at her partner to check how she was doing after that unnecessary backlash. Suki noticed that Ty Lee was trying her best to hold in her tears by looking away from the situation. Suki was about to place her hand on her shoulder but before she can, Ty Lee said, "I-I got to go. I shouldn't have chosen this position."
"Ty Lee! Wait!" Suki tried to grab one of Ty Lee's hands but it was too late. Suki watched as her partner dashed down the hallway rubbing her eyes. She can't imagine what's going through her head at the moment. Azula must have done this so many times to make her like this.
"How could you do this?!" Suki turned to face Azula dead in her eyes. "You know, I don't know what's going through your head right now. Can't you see what you did you did to your friend? Look what you did! She's crying because you verbally assaulted her!"
Azula just rolled her eyes in response to Suki's yabbering. "Eh. It's not my problem that she's too sensit-"
"NO! YOU LISTEN TO ME!" Suki yelled as she slammed her fists onto Azula's door causing a loud deafening sound that echoed through the hallway. Behind the door, Azula stepped back in shock at Suki's reaction with her eyes wide. It was so abnormal to see the Kyoshi Warrior in this state. "Do you know how much she has been through because of you? I can't even mention you without her feeling uncomfortable. All because of you treating her like she's an object that you can throw around. She's a girl who has feelings and playing around with them can negatively impact the way feels and see things. And I can see your stupid father has gotten into your head. You're the best example I can use."
Azula looked at Suki through the small view on the door in astonishment. The Firebender tried her best to hide her shocked state but failed miserably. She has never got to know the Kyoshi Warrior well known enough other than that she and Sokka are well fond of each other. Is she always like this? Or is she like this when she's mad?
"I don't know if you know this, but Ty Lee cares a lot about you." Azula saw Suki change the expression on her face to something a little bit softer. "Whenever I talk to her, she always imagines what you'll be like if weren't this person you are right now. And she's still imagining to this day. Imagining an Azula who's nice, caring, and non-threatening... Someone who will always be there when you're down... Azula who is nice..."
Suki then looked deep into Azula's eyes. "When will you change, Azula? When?"
Azula used all her mental energy to stop the words Suki spoke from entering her head, but they somehow secretly sneaked in giving the Firebender a weird feeling. Azula looked away as she frowned in response to Suki's comment to her.
"You need to change, Azula. You can't remain the same person your whole life." Suki added as she turned and face the direction where Ty Lee ran. "Remember. There are still people here that are worried about you."
Azula watched as Suki walks down the hall until she couldn't see her anymore as she took in the message she conveyed. The Firebender slowly walked back to her bed. She wasn't sure what to do anymore. She continued to stare at her bed as a thought formed inside her head.
Does she really need to change?
Aang and Zuko were walking down the hall talking up a storm as their voices and laughter filled the palace. The Avatar didn't have much to do when Katara's in the South Pole helping her dad with whatever he needed help with. With nothing to do and no one to help, the next best thing is to stay in the Fire Nation and hang out with Zuko before Katara comes back.
"Then Sokka ate it and he said, "HOT! HOT! WHY IS IT SO SPICY?!" Both Katara and I are so gonna cherish that moment!" Aang said as he started laughing at the memory.
"Haha! I feel so bad for Sokka!" Zuko replied wiping a tear off his eye from his laughter.
"Same!" Aang replied still laughing at that time when Sokka fell for one of Aang's Airbender dishes. "I'm trying to push him to try out some vegetarian food from our culture. He's been eating too much meat so I thought I could introduce him to some healthy food for once."
But their laughter stopped when out of nowhere, as they were walking further down the hallway, a faint sound of someone crying can be heard somewhere accompanied by fast footsteps. Zuko noticed that Aang who was next to him slowed down and look around in front to see who was making the sound. To them, it sounded like a girl was crying with a couple of sniffs in between.
Down the hall in front of them was a turn that lead to the left so they aren't able to know the person until they reach the turn.
"Who could be crying?" Zuko asked as he listens to the sound of crying.
"I don't know. C'mon. Let's see who it is." Aang replied. The Airbender suddenly started walking much faster now.
Being the Avatar means just doesn't mean you have to save people's lives, prevent damage from enemies, and defeat Fire Lords. It also means helping people who are going through something. Aang noticed this when he travelled around the world a couple of months ago. He helped more people who were going through emotional problems than people who were in danger.
The two were about to turn until Aang bumped into someone hard causing the two to fall to the ground on their buts fairly hard. The bump was hard enough to cause their heads to hit hard making them rub their heads in pain. Aang wasn't
Zuko saw everything unfold. But what shocked him the most was that a Kyoshi Warrior was what bumped into Aang.
"Ty Lee!" Aang heard Zuko spoke. The Airbender looked up to see a familiar uniform in front of him on the ground. It was Ty Lee in her Kyoshi uniform, but he noticed the facial make-up became ruined due to her crying. Someone could be mistaken Ty Lee for having a mental breakdown. The once happy girl became something miserable.
"Ty Lee, what happened?" Aang asked as he crawl towards her who was still on the ground. He reached a hand out towards her trying his best to comfort her, but it didn't as she brought her legs close to her chest, hiding her face from the two boys.
"Yeah, what happened back there?" Zuko knelt close between Aang and Ty Lee as he looked at his friend with a reassuring expression.
"I-It was Azula! Suki and I were g-guarding her when she knocked on the door. We opened t-the slider and we asked her what she wanted." Ty Lee wiped a tear off her eyes as she continued. "Afterwards, she had a little talk with Suki. Then her eyes landed on me and she started saying some really mean words!"
Zuko looked at her friend with remorse. They all knew that Azula could be rough sometimes. When Azula attacks, she doesn't hold back until her enemies are at a point where they come back.
Zuko looked at Ty Lee and asked, "What did she say about you?"
"She mentioned the time back in the Boiling Rock where Mai and I betrayed her." Ty Lee rubbed her arms just remembering the look she gave her. That death stare burned into her mind. "Azula told me that I couldn't handle guarding her and that I might as well go back to the circus where I belong."
Zuko nor Aang was not surprised by this. The Firelord stood up from his position and made a look that made Ty Lee and Aang look worried. They knew that Zuko can become a bit too serious when it comes to his sister and it was usually unnecessary.
Dusting his clothes, Zuko said sternly, "I'm going to talk with her."
Ty Lee and Aang looked at each other worriedly. What could Zuko possibly do to his sister? They've already done an Agni Kai to prove who's the strongest. What else could they do?
Zuko looked down at Aang. "Bring Ty Lee to a spare room for a while. I'll come to look for you guys once I'm done."
The two watched looked up as they watched Firelord walk down the hallway to meet with his sister again on the same day. They never seem too happy with each other. Always fighting like they're little kids.
"They never seem too fond of each other, right?" Ty Lee asks as she looks at Aang. "It's like they're stuck in a loop with them fighting."
Aang nodded in response as he stood up from the ground. "Yeah, but if you think about it, Azula has been the main cause of it. Zuko has changed over time and he became a better person. Azula has remained the same person because she has no one to tell her what's right and what's wrong. But with Zuko on her side, I think she'll change for the good."
Aang brought a hand out for Ty Lee to take. With a smile on her face, Ty Lee happily grabbed his hand and stood on her two feet. Still holding his hand, the Kyoshi Warrior replied, "Yeah. Let's just hope she becomes the person that everyone wants to see. And the friend I always wanted."
Aang nodded as he smiles at her. The Avatar is more than happy to help Zuko when it comes to Azula. Handling Azula alone with two people is risky enough, but with one person? That's considered suicide. Aang can't imagine going against Azula alone, especially if she's unstable. How does Zuko do it?
"Hey, before we go," Letting go of Ty Lee's hand, he brought both of his hands and placed them on her shoulders, looking at her dead into her stormy grey eyes. "Whatever Azula said to you, it's not true, okay? With your bravery in saving Mai's life, you became one of the bravest Kyoshi Warriors I know. If it weren't for you, Mai wouldn't be here and Zuko wouldn't be Firelord. And the Firenation wouldn't the Firenation as we know now. I don't know if anyone told you this, but you played a major role in taking down the old Firelord."
Ty Lee was speechless, to say the least. She never got to know the Avatar very well due to her being busy guarding the castle from any attacks. But knowing that Aang is like this, Ty Lee wants nothing more but to get to know the Airbender well. In the past, when they still considered each other enemies, she noticed that Aang looked more like an innocent person than an enemy. So she tried her best to go for someone else when attacking.
The fact that Aang will be here while helping Zuko with... Azula's mental state, maybe they'll become close friends. Like him and Zuko.
Ty Lee's face reddens without her knowing. With the frown now replaced with a smile, Ty Lee replies with, "T-Thanks, Aang. I needed to hear that."
"It's no problem." Aang then placed a hand on her back. "C'mon, I'll take you to a room where we'll play something while we wait for Zuko to come back."
"Okay!"
Fast footsteps echoed throughout the walls of the hallway as the Firelord walked back down a familiar quiet hallway back to his sister's room. Zuko didn't like the fact his sister verbally attack one of his friends. Sentences started forming inside his head on what he was about to say when they meet.
As he continues to walk, another Kyoshi Warrior appears in front of him and it appears that the person seems to be in a hurry.
As the Firelord got closer, he recognise the person to be Suki, the partner of Ty Lee. Could she know more about what happened with Ty Lee? She did say Suki was talking with his sister.
When the two see each other, Zuko was the first to greet her. "Suki! What are you doing here?"
"Azula argued with Ty Lee and then she ran away. Have you seen her?" Suki replied with a worried expression plastered all over her face.
"We did in fact. We bumped into her, mostly Aang, on the way to you guys. She was crying so I told Aang to send her to a private room. Hopefully, Aang can cheer her up."
Suki's expression relaxed as she knew Zuko took care of her friend. "Thank you so much. She did get a beating though. Seeing her cry like that made me feel so bad for her. Azula can go too far sometimes."
Zuko's face darkens as he looks at the hallway that directs him to his sister. "That's why I'm going to talk with her."
The sound of metal grinding against each filled Azula's room as the Firelord unlocks the door. Zuko was familiar with the sound so it didn't bother him that much. He reminded himself numerous times to get the door checked out or replace it, but with how busy he is, he keeps it in the back of his mind, forgetting about it.
Swinging the door open, Zuko was met with his sister sitting on the side of her bed looking down on her lap. If was, to be honest, he was a little creeped out with his sister doing something out of place.
Without a single thought about whether his sister was going through something, Zuko yelled, "What was that about?! Do you not care about what you say about other people?! You should think before you say something! Me seeing Ty Lee crying broke my heart! Saying 'You should go back to the circus where you belong!' You should've seen her! You're lucky enough that Aang is here to comfort her from your words."
At this point, Zuko was breathing heavily from his built-up anger toward his sister. He turned around to notice the door was still open. Closing it shut, he turned back to his sister to see her with tears flowing down her cheeks.
Zuko's expression turned into one of remorse. He should've seen this one coming. Whenever he's heated, he does the most stupid actions without him knowing it. It's almost like anger just took over his mind and body.
"Azula... I'm sorry that I said all tha-" Zuko was about to place a hand on her shoulder until his sister turned to face him. With more tears coming out of her eyes, Zuko couldn't feel more than regretful.
Just barely able to talk through her mental state, Azula quietly said, "Zuko, do you think I'm a monster?"
