Chapter Nine: Surprises All Around

It wasn't much longer when Claire's car pulled up next to a bungalow that was sitting by a lake. Adrien could see Owen sitting on the ground and working on a motorcycle. Even with the windows closed, Adrien could hear him listening to something in Spanish. Both he and Claire got out of the car and Owen looked to see who it was. When he saw Claire he asked, "What do they want now?"

"Hello, Mr. Grady." Adrien waved as he and Claire walked up to him. A smile formed on Owen's face and he said, "Nice to see you again, kid. Get stuck in anymore rides?"

"No, not too recently." Adrien laughed while Plagg rolled his eyes from his hiding place. Claire then said, "Mr. Grady? I need you to come and take a look at something."

"Why are you calling me Mr. Grady?" Owen asked her, not understanding the reason. Gesturing between her and himself he said, "You know my name's Owen."

"Owen." Claire nodded, wanting to keep on track. Then she said, "If you're not too busy."

"I'm pretty busy." Owen said when he raised a soda bottle to his lips. Claire continued by saying, "We have a new attraction."

"That's not what you said the last time that I saw you." Owen said to Claire and he stood up from working on his mototcycle. Adrien was starting to feel that there was a lot more between the two. Claire gave an annoyed sigh and she said, "I'm talking about the dinosaurs, Mr. Grady."

"Owen." He corrected when he walked up to them. Claire tried to talk while fly buzzed around her, "A new species that we've made."

Owen saved her from the fly by catching it in his hand with quick reflexes. He moved his hand away before releasing the fly. Both Adrien and Plagg, who had been watching a little from the shirt, were impressed by that. Owen then asked her, "You just went and made a new dinosaur?"

"Yeah, uh, it's kind of what we do here." Claire nodded as he walked to a table and moved things around. She then told him, "The exhibit will open to the public in three weeks. And Mr. Masrani wanted me to come and consult with you."

"And him?" Owen said when he looked to her and gestured to Adrien. Claire looked to the boy before looking back to Owen, "He was needing something to do until his father came back."

"Where'd he go?" Owen asked a really good question. Adrien shrugged and said, "He said that he needed some time to rest. Sometimes he just seems to disappear."

"That's tough, buddy." Owen said with a sympathetic look. Looking to Claire he asked, "So, you wanna consult out here or… in my bungalow?"

Claire gave him a smile before shaking her head and saying, "That's not funny." Then gesturing to Adrien she added, "And with a child here."

"He's like what, thirteen or fourteen." Owen defended the civilian identity of the holder of the Cat Miraculous. He laughed when he added, "And it was a little funny."

"We'd like for you to evaluate the paddock for vulnerabilities." Claire said when he walked up the steps and went around a corner. Adrien then added, "It's mostly her and Mr. Masrani."

"Why me?" Owen asked, mostly talking to Claire. Adrien looked about when he heard a bird call out. Claire shrugged when she went up the stairs after him and said, "I guess Mr. Masrani thinks that since you're able to control the Velociraptors…"

"See, it's always about control with you." Owen said when he came back around. Then he clarified it by saying, "I don't control the Raptors. It's more of a relationship.

"Plus, sometimes that relationship is put to the test like today." Owen said. Neither Claire nor Adrien understood what he meant as the latter asked, "What do you mean?"

"That Nino kid, that was with you earlier." Owen reminded as he looked to the boy. Then he said, "He and one of the handlers almost became Raptor chow had it not been for that bond. And it's one that's based on mutual respect.

"And one of the reasons that you and I never had a second date." Owen said as he twisted a socket wrench before walking down the steps again. Adrien's eyes widened to that his best friend had been in danger and that these two had gone out together. But he didn't say anything as Claire seemed slightly offended when she questioned, "Excuse me? I never wanted to have a second date."

"Who prints out an itinerary for a night out?" Owen questioned back as he walked up to his motorcycle and sat down. Claire defended herself by saying, "I'm a well-organized person."

"And what kind of a diet doesn't allow tequila?" Owen asked when he looked to her. He turned back to his motorcycle and she thought it was kind of stupid when she said, "All of them, actually.

"And what kind of a man shows up to a date in board shorts?" She questioned back to him. Owen gave a really good reason when he said, "It's Central America. It's gonna be hot."

"He does have a point." Adrien agreed with a nod. Owen nodded back to him and Claire tried to get everything back on track, "Okay, okay. Can we just get back to focusing on the asset, please?"

"The asset?" Owen asked and set his tools down. Standing up he brought out a handkerchief and wiped his hands off. Then he said, "Look, Claire, I get it. You're in charge out here. And you gotta make a lot of tough decisions for this place.

"So it's probably just easier for you to pretend that these animals are just numbers on a spread sheet." He shook his head, "But they're not. They're alive."

"I'm fully well aware that they're alive." Claire said, not seeing the point. Adrien stepped up and said, "What I think Owen is trying to say is, that you don't see them in the right light. It's kind of like that you don't have any respect for them."

"He's right." Owen said when he pointed to the kid and Claire turned to him. Then he pointed out, "You might have made them all in a test tube," He gestured to where the park was, "but they don't know that.

"They're thinking to themselves, "I gotta eat, I gotta hunt, I gotta…" Owen started to say and started to raise his hand. But Claire cut him off before he could continue, "Okay, I get it."

"But you can relate to at least one of those things. Right?" Owen asked while Adrien shook his head and crossed his arms. Claire just shook her head before coming down the stairs, "I'll be waiting in the car." She stopped in front of him a moment and advised, "And you might want to go and change your shirt. They're very sensitive to smell.

"Come on, Adrien." She said and walked to the car. Adrien and Owen looked to each other and they shrugged before the boy followed after her. Owen only smirked as he went back into his hut to get a fresh shirt.

Back at the park, Zach, Gray, Chloe, Alya and Nino were all at the Mosasaurus Feeding show. They were sitting pretty close to the front row. A woman stood at the edge of a platform that stood out from the crowd. She then gave a lesson through her microphone, "The Mosasaurus was thought to have hunted near the surface of the water where it would prey on anything that it could sink its teeth into, including turtles, large fish, even smaller Mosasaurs."

Alya had her phone out and was getting every word and action of it. Everyone looked up to a wire that was tied to a tower in the lagoon as a shark on a wire moved. The woman then said, "All right, folks, let's see if she's still hungry after already eating today.

"She's a little shy, so be nice and give her a big hand when she comes out."She told them as they waited. Alya held her phone and said, "Oh, this is going to be so awesome."

"It would be if that giant fish would hurry up." Chloe said. She waved her hand when she scoffed, "Talk about tardy. Utterly tardy."

"She's not a fish, Chloe." Gray said, making her look to him. He then said, "She's a large aquatic dinosaur."

"Pff. Whatever." Chloe waved off. While Gray rolled his eyes, he happened to notice his brother looking on his phone at a picture of his girlfriend holding a sticky note that read miss you. He shook his brother to get Zach's attention, "Zach! Zach! The Mosasaur!"

"Here she comes!" Alya said as she held her phone at the ready. Everyone watched as a large aquatic reptilian creature jumped out of the water with a growl. She snapped her jaws on the shark and everyone in the stands gasped in amazement. They watched as she snapped the shark off the line and landed back in the lagoon with a big splash. Everyone in the splash zone got drenched. While most clapped and applauded, the only one who wasn't too thrilled was Chloe as she screamed, "Oh! This totally ruins my hair! Unacceptable! Utterly unacceptable!"

"Oh, my gosh, are you kidding?! That was so awesome!" Gray thought differently. Alya laughed and said, "Good thing my phone case is water proof."

"Yeah, would have ruined the shot." Nino agreed with her. They were all surprised when the audience stands started to shake before lowering down. The woman then said, "Hold on tight, everyone.

"We're gonna give you an even closer look at our resident Mosasaurus." She said as she watched them continue their decent. The crowds were able to get an underwater view of the Mosasaur as her tail disappeared under the waves. Mostly everyone was still clapping as they watched the Mosasaurus turn before coming back for the rest of the shark. She was able to eat it one swoop of her powerful jaws. The Mosasaurus growled a little as she shook her head from side to side.

"She has eighty-eight teeth!" Gray said. This impressed Alya and Nino as the former asked, "Wow. Did you count them all that quickly?"

"Yeah. And I did a little research." He shrugged. Zach looked to the four and asked, "Hey, you guys wanna see something else cool?"

"Yeah!" Both Gray and Nino nodded. Alya then asked, "What do you have in mind?"

"Something that could also be useful for your blog." Zach said, intriguing Alya. Looking over to Chloe he asked, "You in?"

"Do I have a choice?" She questioned. Zach shrugged and said, "Yeah. It's either you can hang with us, or walk around doing nothing until your non-boyfriend comes back."

"He is so my-" Chloe started to say. But all four cut her off by saying, "No he's not."

"Uh, fine." Chloe agreed as she crossed her arms.

Back at the Raptor compound, Lila was standing in a small office with Vic Hoskins. She looked at a few pictures and asked, "So, you and Owen were once in the military? Is that right?"

"Yep. Served a few years." Hoskins nodded with a grin. Lila didn't turn around when she said, "I've met a few people from the military myself. Including a good number of people from around the world."

"Really?" Vic asked when he walked up to her. She turned around and nodded, "Yep. I even know icons like Bob Ross, Mr. Agreste, the mayor of Paris and so many more."

"Wow. That's a lot of people." Hoskins said, buying into her words. Lila seemed to be thinking of something and said, "Perhaps, when I get back to Paris, I could propose that idea of yours. Once you've gotten off the ground.

"I mean, think about it." Lila said as she wrapped an arm around Vic's shoulder, "If you had the mayor of Paris and a few others backing up your plan…"

"Then Mr. Masrani could see the potential too." Hoskins finished as he could see it. Lila's eyes narrowed and she said, "Exactly."

Then faking like she needed to step out she said, "I need to step out for a moment. If you know what I mean."

"Oh, I get it." Vic nodded. Then he said, "I'll just be waiting here trying to think of something to tell Masrani."

"You do that." Lila said before walking out of the room. When she had the door closed she quietly said to herself, "Hook, line and sinker."

She walked away from the building, which didn't go unnoticed by Barry who had been standing close by. Lila walked around a palm tree and pulled out a phone. Dialing a number she waited a moment. When it answered she asked, "It's me, Lila Rossi. Could you put him on please?

"Oh, well then let him know that they're maybe an opportunity for him." Lila reported. Leaning against the tree she said, "I just need to figure out a way to get him there. Then when his big plan goes down in flames, that'll make him an ideal target."

She nodded when she heard the person on the other line talk to him. Lila wrapped it up by saying, "Ok, then. Have a nice day."

Clicking a button to end the call, she slipped her phone into her pocket again before looking about the grounds. When she saw that the coast was clear, Lila headed back to Vic's office. Unbeknownst to her, Barry had been watching from a distance. He decided to keep an eye on Lila while she was with them.

Ivan, Mylene, Rose and Juleka were all walking about through the petting zoo. Rose gushed over the baby dinosaurs and said, "Oh, look how cute they are. Don't you just want to take them home with you?"

"It would be adorable." Mylene laughed in agreement. Ivan then said, "I kind of wouldn't mind seeing the baby dinosaurs hatching from their eggs."

"Oh, yeah, like how Doctors Grant, Sattler and Malcom got to at the first park." Rose remembered something about that. Juleka muttered, "It would be cool to see just about every kind of dinosaur from in there."

"I just can't find them anywhere." A worried voice said from the side. All four friends looked to see Zara and Adrien's bodyguard looking about for someone. Mylene walked over and asked, "Is everything okay?"

"Wha-" Zara asked as she and the Gorilla looked to her. Zara then remembered, "You… You're friends with Mr. Agreste's son. Have you seen Zach and Gray around?"

"Not since the Gyrosphere incident earlier today." Ivan said as the three joined her. Zara seemed frantic when she said, "The two of us were watching the boys one moment and the next thing we know they're gone."

"Maybe we can help you look for them." Rose offered with a kind smile. Zara thought about it before looking to Adrien's bodyguard. He nodded to let them. Zara sighed before asking, "If you wouldn't mind helping us, we'd appreciate it."

"No problem." Mylene waved off. The six then started their search for Zach and Gray.

Back on Main Street, Marinette was sitting with the disguised Master Fu at a table at a restaurant. Marinette seemed to mess around with the food on her plate before asking, "So, you said that you've been here before right?"

"That's right, Marinette." Master Fu nodded while sneaking a little food to Wayzz who was hiding in his shirt pocket. Marinette did the same for Tikki in her purse and then asked, "I don't suppose that you got to see all the dinosaurs here, huh?"

"I did. Just about every single one." Master Fu remembered. Then he revealed, "I had also seen a brand-new dinosaur."

"A brand-new one? What was it?" Marinette asked, surprised about it. Master Fu shook his head, "I'm not entirely sure. I was able to prevent her from escaping from the labs. But she was greatly different from the rest. White scales and pretty long limbs. She looked to be a predator kind of dinosaur."

"What do you think happened to her?" Marinette wondered. Master Fu once again shook his head, "I wouldn't know. It's been a while since I had last been here. She could be anywhere on the island since then."

They were suddenly brought out of their thoughts when they heard a few screams coming down the street. Both Miraculous holders looked to see a man dangling from a broken harness. He was dangerously high over the street and could be really hurt. Marinette looked about for a place to transform. Luckily for her, Master Fu pointed and said, "Marinette, over there!"

She looked to see a sign that pointed to a restroom. Marinette quickly got up and rushed to get her hero on. She ran to the bathroom and looked to see if anyone was watching or any video cameras. When she saw that the coast was clear, Marinette ducked into the bathroom. She opened her purse to let Tikki out and said, "I guess it's time for Ladybug to make an appearance."

"Just say the word, Marinette." Tikki said with a grin. Marinette brushed her braid back and said, "Tikki, Spots On!"

Tikki suddenly flew into the right earring and the black jewel turned into that of a ladybug. The five black spots shimmered as the transformation began. Marinette brought her hands before her eyes before moving them just as a ladybug themed mask appeared on her face. Then throwing her arms out, a ladybug themed spandex suit appeared over her arms before it spread over the rest of her body. A ladybug themed yo-yo appeared on her side as the string wrapped around her waist. When the costume completely materialized on her body, Ladybug then struck her usual heroic pose.

Ladybug carefully peeked out of the restroom and looked about. When she was sure that no one or nothing had seen her coming out, she stepped out before removing her yo-yo from her side. She threw it forward and it wrapped around a piece of a building before she zipped forward. The man was still hanging when he gasped when he saw that his harness was about to snap. He started screaming when it snapped and he started to fall. Luckily for him, a red blur swooped in and caught him before he could get too close to the ground.

Everyone was amazed when Ladybug landed with the man in her arms. He looked to her and asked, "Ladybug? What are you doing here?"

"Oh, um, just looking out for those in need." Ladybug chuckled. The tourists and the workers in the park started to crowd around her and ask questions. She began to grow nervous and said, "Uh, no time for questions.

"Bug out." She said and flung her yo-yo forward. She zipped away while everyone watched in awe. Ladybug disappeared behind a sign and moved to where she could get back to the restrooms where she had transformed. However, when she looked she not only saw Master Fu, but a few other people as well. And it looked to be a big crowd. Master Fu looked up to her and shrugged. Ladybug knew that she was in a bit of a pickle.

Over at the Control Room, Simon Masrani had come into the main room. Looking to Vivian he said, "I just got an alert that someone was in trouble."

"They were." Vivian confirmed. She pointed to the monitor and said, "But it's been taken care of."

"Huh?" He said and looked. They were all surprised when the video rewound enough to show Ladybug catching the man in mid-swing. Masrani stood up straight and said, "I do not know why she is here. But I am indeed grateful that she had shown up."

"Yeah, if that guy would have ended up as street pizza if she hadn't." Lowery nodded in agreement. Simon started to think before saying, "Try to get in touch with her. I wish to thank her myself."

"Yes, sir." Vivian nodded and placed a hand to her headset.

On the roof of the building, Ladybug was still thinking about what to do for her situation. She thought about finding another place in the park to de-transform, but she also thought about someone being close by and putting two and two together. Then she thought about going outside of the park to do it, but then she thought about being unable to get back in without her powers. She was brought out of her thoughts when she heard someone yell, "Ms. Ladybug?!"

Moving to the edge of the building she saw a park official standing on the ground. He gestured for her to calm down and asked, "If I may have a moment of your time."

"Uh, be right down." She said before jumping down. Everyone nearby was amazed when she landed in a superhero pose before standing up straight. The man then said, "Mr. Masrani would like to have a word with you, Ms. Ladybug."

"Whoa, really?" A greatly surprised Ladybug asked. The man turned and walked to lead her. Ladybug glanced to Master Fu who smiled and nodded. She smiled back before following after him.

Elsewhere on the island, Claire's car soon arrived back at Paddock Eleven. All three passengers got out of the car. The construction workers were still going at it as the three walked up to the stairs that led to the observation deck. Claire then told Owen, "We've been pre-booking tickets for the exhibit for months now."

"Kind of a long wait, don't you think." Adrien said while she took the lead. Claire laughed a little and said, "Well, we just want to make sure everything is ready.

"And the park needs a new attraction every few years in order to reinvigorate the public's interest. Kind of like the space program." She said as they reached the stairs. They climbed up the steps when she informed, "Corporate felt that genetic modification would up the wow factor for us."

"They're dinosaurs. Wow enough." Owen said, not feeling the need to mess around with something that could go wrong. Claire smirked when she shook her head, "Not according to our focus groups. The Indominus Rex will make us relevant again."

"The Indominus Rex?" Owen laughed when he thought that the name sounded silly to him. Claire rolled her eyes from his skepticism, "We needed something scary and really easy to pronounce. You should hear a four-year-old try to say 'Archaeornithomimus'. It's crazy."

"You should hear you try to say it." Owen said, laughing a little. From behind, Adrien carefully pulled his shirt to look at Plagg. He could see the Kwami imitating the conversation between the two and Adrien smiled, but remembered to keep it down.

The three entered the observation deck and looked out into the paddock. Claire walked to one of the control consoles and the two boys walked over to a window. Owen looked for the hybrid and asked, "So what's this thing made of exactly?"

"The base genome is that of a T-rex. The rest is classified." Claire informed as she started to look about as well. Owen looked to her with a questioning look and asked, "You guys made a new dinosaur, but you don't even know what it is?"

"The lab delivers us the finished assets, and then we show them off to the public." Claire said and took a deep breath. Looking to the security guard she asked, "Can we drop a steer, please?"

"Mm-hmm." The guard nodded, taking a break from his lunch. He pressed a few buttons. Adrien looked to Owen and said, "I'm willing to bet that my friends, Alya or Max could figure it out if they saw her.

"Max's is a real genius and Alya is a bit of a detective." He explained with a grin. Owen was a little impressed with that. He focused on the paddock and its inhabitant when he asked Claire, "How long has the animal been in here?"

"All its life." Claire simply said. Owen then asked, "Never seen anything outside of these walls?"

"It does seem to be a little-" Adrien started to say. Owen finished by saying, "Depressing for her."

"We can't exactly take it for a walk." Claire pointed out as the crane started to lower a huge slab of meat. Owen pointed to the food and asked, "And you feed it with that?"

"Well, she did say earlier that it was becoming to dangerous for the handlers." Adrien said to help Claire a little. The large piece of meat was lowered down into the trees. While she did appreciate it, Claire gave a light shake of her head and questioned, "Is there a problem here?"

"Animals that are raised in isolation aren't always the most functional." Owen said with a knowing look. Adrien nodded and said, "I can somewhat relate. When my father wouldn't let me out of the house, I kind resorted to sneaking out of the house to go to school."

The boy could almost hear Plagg gagging as he still had his reservations about Adrien going to school like a normal kid. Claire then argued by saying, "Your Raptors are born in captivity."

"With siblings. And they learn social skills from each other." Owen pointed out. He walked over when he added, "And I imprint on them when they're born."

"It is tough when you're the only kid in the house." Adrien put in. Owen gestured to Adrien and said, "See? He get it.

"No offense, Adrien." Owen said when he turned to him. Adrien laughed a little before waving it off, "No problem."

"There's trust between us." Owen said when he looked to Claire. She didn't seem that impressed. Owen looked to where the meat had vanished when he said, "The only positive relationship that this animal has is with that crane. At least she knows that that means food."

"Is there any way to help her?" Adrien asked him. Owen could only give the boy a shrug. Claire then sarcastically asked, "So, she mostly needs a friend. We should schedule some play-dates? That sort of thing?

"I mean, she seemed to like Adrien earlier." Claire remembered. Owen looked to her and was mostly joking when he said, "I don't think his old man would like that."

"He didn't." Both Claire and Adrien said at the same time. Owen looked between them and Adrien said, "Father tried to move me away from the glass when she walked up, but a growl from her made him stop.

"I can't exactly explain it." Adrien shook his head. They all looked back to the paddock and noticed that it was eerily quiet. Claire tried tapping the glass to get its attention. But when nothing happened, she questioned, "Where is it?"

"Is it in the basement?" Owen sarcastically asked as all three looked about. He got a little smart by asking, "Is there a downstairs to this place." Then he suggested, "Maybe she's in the rec room."

"Kind of a bad time to go and get a coffee." Adrien joked. While Owen laughed a little, Claire didn't seem to find it funny. She shook her head, "It was just here. We were just here."

She marched around the two and walked over to the other console. Tapping a few keys, she waited a few keys. She looked over to the monitors while Adrien and Owen both happened to notice something outside of the observation deck. They walked to the window on the other side as a multitude of buzzing sounds went off on each of the monitors. Even the guard didn't think it was good when he shook his head, "Oh, man. It doesn't make any sense."

Both their eyes went wide when the final monitor said NO THERMAL SIGNATURES DETECTED anywhere in the paddock. The guard helped himself to another chip as he looked about his work station, "These doors haven't been opened up in weeks.

"She's always been in here." The guard said in frustrated. Over on the other side of the deck, Adrien's eyes widened and he looked to Owen. The former Navy man had the same look. They turned and Owen pointed when he asked, "Were those claw marks always there?"

"I sure don't remember them the last time we were here." Adrien shook his head, feeling really worried. Claire walked over to where she could see and her eyes widened with fear before asking, "Do you think it…"

"I'm thinking she may have climbed out." Adrien finished her thoughts aloud. She shuddered at the thought of the Indominus on the loose, "Oh no.

"She has an implant in her back. I can have it tracked from the control room." Claire said as she made for the door. Looking to Adrien she said, "Stay here, okay. Hopefully we can prevent this disaster."

"If you say so." Adrien said as she left. When she was gone, both Adrien and Owen looked back to the wall to view the marks and saw them really close to the door.
