An Chance Meeting

Carissa stood in line for her pizza take out order, it was busy but that was to be expected since it was Friday night.

She turned and smiled at a boy next to her and before she knew it his arms were around her.

"Hi Woman!" He exclaimed happily.

Carissa had no idea who this child was.

"Hi." She said with a chuckle.

"What's your name?" She asked kindly when he had finally let go of her.

The child's eyes got wide.

"You don't know?" He asked.

"Nope, I'm sorry, I don't." Carissa said apologetically.

"Are you crazy?" The child asked.

Carissa looked at him, she could tell he wasn't saying that to be rude, he genuinely that she was crazy for not knowing his name.

After a moment it finally dawned on her what was going on.

"You think I'm Mrs. Stokes, don't you?" She asked him.

"No, I don't think you're Stokes, I know you're Stokes." He stated.

She chuckled.

"I'm Mrs. Stokes' twin sister, Mrs. Hart." Carissa told him.

"I don't believe you." He stated as a matter of fact.

"It's true." She insisted.

He was about to argue again but he noticed something, a piece of Carissa's red hair had come out of her ball cap, and Stokes didn't have red hair, and he noticed something else, he'd seen Stokes in the hallway at school today, he'd even given her a hug, and she was wearing a purple sweater and jeans and this lady was wearing a green shirt and black pants.

"Your hair is red, and your clothes are different than they were today at school." He told her.

"See, I'm not Mrs. Stokes."

His facial expression turned from confused too downright disappointed.

"What's your name?" Carissa asked again.

"Davis." He told her.

"Hi Davis, it's nice to meet you. I'm not Mrs. Stokes but I am a teacher, like her." Carissa told him.

His eyes got wide with surprise at that.

"Do you know Dude? Dude is a riot." He asked.

"Dude?" She asked.

"Yep, do you know him?"

"No, I'm sorry. I don't know who dude is." She told him.

He frowned.

"Are you in Mrs. Stokes' class?" She asked.

"Nope, I was but Stokes kicked me out." He informed her.

This time it was Carissa's eyes that went wide.

"She did?" Carissa couldn't believe that, Jackie seemed like such a kind and patient teacher, she couldn't imagine her ever kicking a student out of her class.

Carissa was going to ask him why he was kicked out of Jackie's class when the chime above the door sounded indicating someone else had just walked in and before Carissa could say another word Davis was running towards the door.

"Hanson!" He said happily as he threw his arms around his favorite guest teacher.

"Hi Davis! How are you?" She asked as she returned the hug.

"Good!" He responded.

"That's good." Chelsea Hanson told him.

"I didn't see you at school at all today, Hanson."

"I didn't work today, I had a dentist appointment."

Davis made a sympathetic face at her.

"Did he pull any of your teeth out? Davis asked.

"Nope." Chelsea said with a chuckle.

"That's good."

You can say that again Chelsea thought to herself.

"Come here." He said as he grabbed her arm and practically dragged her across the room to stand by Carissa.

"It's not Stokes, don't call her Stokes, she'll get mad." Davis informed Chelsea in a stage whisper.

"Hi, you must be Jac….Mrs. Stokes' sister. I'm Chelsea Hanson, I sub at Kent Elementary all the time."

"Hi Chelsea, I'm Carissa, it's nice to meet you. Maybe you can sub for me sometime?"

"No." Davis said flatly with a shake of his head.

"She can't sub for me?" Carissa asked him.

"No, she can't." Davis insisted.

"Why not?" Carissa asked.

"Because, she is everybody's favorite guest teacher at my school so she can't move to your school or all the kids would be really mad." Davis stated, as if that should have been painfully obvious.

Chelsea chuckled.

"Well Davis I'd only sub for her once in a while, I'd still be at Kent most of the time." Chelsea assured him.

"Nope, not good enough woman." He informed Chelsea.

He then turned his attention back to Carissa.

"Sorry, that's very unfortunate for you." He told her, he was not going to let her steal Hanson!

Both Carissa and Chelsea had to bit their lips to keep from laughing out loud.

"Davis, come on, our pizza is ready." A woman called.

Davis sighed "Ok mom, I'm coming."

"Bye Hanson." He said as he gave Chelsea one last hug.

"Bye Davis, have a good weekend!"

"Thanks, you too." He answered.

"Thank you."

He then turned his attention to Carissa.

"Bye Fake Stokes." He told her.

"Goodbye Davis, it was nice meeting you."

"You too I guess, although I would have rather seen the real Stokes." He informed her.

At that, both Chelsea and Carissa had to turn so they could laugh and Davis wouldn't see them.

Davis walked towards his mom and then turned back around.

"Hey Hanson, are you going to be my teacher next Thursday?" He asked.

"Yes I am." She answered with a smile.

"Yay! How about next Friday?"

"Yep, Friday too."

"Yes!" He said with an excited fist pump.

"How about Wednesday?"

"Nope, not Wednesday, just Thursday and Friday."

"Oh great, who's going to be my teacher that day?" He asked dejectedly.

"Mrs. Perini, I think." (Mrs. Perini is Davis' regular teacher.)

"Oh, ok." Davis said cheering up.

Davis then left with his mom.

A few minutes later Carissa's pizzas were ready as well.

"Thank you." She told a man entering the pizza place, he was kind enough to hold the door for her.

"No prob… hi Carissa."

Carissa looked at the man instead of focusing on not dropping her pizzas.

"Oh, hi Nick!" She told him.

"I just met one of Jackie's former students, he was a real character." Carissa said with a grin.

"Do you know his name?" Nick asked with a chuckle.

"Davis." Nick chuckled.

"Is he still in there?"

"No, he left a few minutes ago. Listen I probably should ask Jackie this and not you but I am too curious to wait so I'll ask you. Did Jackie kick him out of her class and if so, why?"

Nick burst out laughing.

"No, she most certainly did not kick him out, Jackie loves that child, she misses him dearly, the reason he's not in her class anymore is because he's not in first grade anymore, although Jacks says he still comes to visit her classroom quite often."

Carissa laughed, that made way more sense than Jackie kicking him out.

"This is a long shot, you probably won't know but I'll ask anyway. He asked me if I knew who Dude was, you wouldn't happen to know who that is would you?"

Nick laughed again.

"Yes, I know who that is, that would be me."

"You're dude?"

"Yep, the one and only."

"Well, according to Davis you are a riot."

Nick laughed again.

"He's the riot, not me." Nick stated.

"I believe that."

Nick grinned.

"Well Nick, I better get home, my kids are probably starving by now. We are still going to the park and then for hamburgers next weekend, right?" Carissa asked him.

"Yeah, Jackie was just saying how fun it will be for all of us to get together, the kids will have a blast."

"They will, it'll be nice." Carissa agreed.

On the drive home Carissa couldn't help but smile, it had been quite the entertaining trip to the pizza parlor!

The End!
