Chapter 18 – It's Official

The next morning, Patrick wakes up early, running into Lee and Rosemary's room. Patrick jumps on the bed, shouting, "Mama, Papa, wake up!" He crawls in between them, getting under the warm covers. Lee pulls the covers over his head. Patrick and Rosemary giggle, "Papa, wake up. I had so much fun last night with Miss Elizabeth, Mountie Nathan, Allie, and Jack."

Lee pulls the covers back down with a big grin on his face. He asks, "Miss Elizabeth, huh? What did you all do?"

Patrick responds, "Missus Thornton told me I can call her Miss Elizabeth when we are at our home or hers. Mountie Nathan fixed a really yummy fish dinner. Next, we made cookies and decorated them. Then, Miss Elizabeth, Allie, and I put on a puppet show for Mountie Nathan and Jack. Allie made up the story. It was about a girl, her mother, and her little brother. The girl loved horses, and she begged her mother to get her a horse to ride every day. The girl and the little brother teamed up and were able to talk their mom into buying a horse for them to share. Then we played old maid, and I won!"

"You did? That's amazing," adds Rosemary.

Patrick continues, "Mountie Nathan played songs for Jack on the guitar while we all sang along. It was so much fun."

"How fun! You sure did a lot. No wonder you were asleep when we came to get you. Papa had to carry you all the way home. Do you remember singing "This Old Man" or us tucking you into bed?" inquires Rosemary.

"You did, Papa?" Lee nods. Patrick giggles, "I don't remember anything after Mountie Nathan singing. Did you have fun on your date night?"

"We sure did. Papa made me feel so special and so loved," answers Rosemary. She leans in, giving Lee a quick kiss on the lips. Rosemary pats Lee on the face, quietly adding, "I love you, Lee Coulter."

Patrick says, "Eww…"

Lee inquires, "Eww? Since when did Mama and Papa kissing become eww?"

Patrick answers, "I heard Allie and Jack say that when Mountie Nathan kissed Miss Elizabeth when they didn't know we were watching."

"There is nothing wrong when two grownups, who love each other, kiss," remarks Rosemary.

Lee adds, "It's not something you or Allie should be thinking about any time soon."

Patrick replies, "Yes, sir." Lee messes with Patrick's hair.

It's that time of the year again where the weather is slowly becoming colder and the days are getting shorter. The children are no longer spending hours and hours outside running around and playing. Jacket weather is here to stay for the foreseeable future. Patrick is spending more time in the house drawing pictures, writing stories, or playing make-believe. He and Vincent take turns on where they play each day.

One afternoon, Rosemary picks Patrick up from school. She inquires, "Hey, bud. How was school today?" Patrick takes her hand as they walk towards town.

"Miss Elizabeth told us about a school carnival and variety show she is planning. Both kids and adults can perform an act in the variety show."

"Oh, sounds like fun! Do you want to perform?"

Patrick immediately asks, "Can you and I do something together?"

"I love that idea. What would you like to do?"

Patrick questions, "Maybe we can sing a song?" Rosemary giggles.

"I'll let you come up with a song. When is this happening?"

"In a few weeks."

Rosemary nods, thinking to herself, "I wonder why Elizabeth didn't tell me about this."

"Can I get some ice cream before we go to the dress-shop?" asks Patrick.

"Of course," answers Rosemary. Patrick gets his chocolate ice cream cone, and they head over to Dottie's. "Be careful, Patrick. Please don't get ice cream on anything."

Patrick confidently remarks, "Yes, ma'am."

Rosemary opens the door for Patrick when suddenly she stops to pick up a pink silk scarf on the floor. Patrick isn't paying attention and walks right into Rosemary. The ice cream cone lands right in the middle of her favorite maroon striped blouse. She gasps as the cold ice cream is soaking through her beloved blouse. Rosemary grabs the cone, running towards the back, looking for a towel or napkin to wipe away the ice cream. She wraps the rest of the cone in a towel and walks back out front to make sure he didn't get ice cream anywhere else. Patrick sees the stain on Rosemary's blouse and apologizes, "I am sorry, Mama. I didn't mean to get ice cream all over you."

She messes with his hair. "It's okay, Patrick. I know it was an accident." Rosemary pauses for a minute, looking at her stained blouse, frowning, "Why don't we just go home? I'll get you another ice cream cone on the way home. What do you say?"

Patrick replies, "Yes, please. Thank you, Mama."

Lee gets home from work just in time for dinner. He sees Patrick setting the table. Patrick runs up to him, giving him a big hug. Lee asks, "Hey, buddy! Did you have a good day at school today?"

"Yes, sir. There is going to be a school carnival and a variety show. Mama and I are going to sing a song together. Will you be there to watch?"

"When is it?"

"In a few weeks."

"I'll be there. Speaking of Mama, where is she?"

"She is upstairs doing something. She said dinner is almost ready." Just then, Rosemary comes down the stairs.

Rosemary speaks, "Hello, my darling! How long have you been home?" She kisses him on the cheek.

"Oh, I've only been here for a few minutes." He looks at her blouse, laughing, "What happened there?"

Rosemary looks down at her blouse, giggling, "Patrick had a little mishap with an ice cream cone." She pouts a little before saying, "I hope I can get the stain out."

On a crisp fall morning, Lee is surprised when Bill comes through the door of his office. Lee inquires, "What can I do for you, Bill?"

"I have some news. Can you and Rosemary meet me in my office in an hour?"

"Um. Sure. Should I be worried?"

Bill grunts, "No, it is good news. I think you'll want Rosemary to hear as well."

"Okay, then. We will meet you there in an hour." Bill walks out the door, and Lee lets out the breath he has been holding. He thinks to himself, "Could it be about Patrick? Maybe the adoption decree finally arrived?" Lee drops what he was working on, walking over to the dress-shop. Rosemary is busy with a customer, so Lee gives her a wave and waits patiently for her to finish. When another customer walks inside, Lee decides to wait for her outside. Rosemary finally finishes up, walking out to find Lee sitting on a bench.

"Is everything okay, sweetheart?" asks Rosemary.

Lee pats the bench next to him, hoping she will join him. Rosemary sits down next to him, resting her hand on his leg. He kisses her on the cheek, questioning, "I can't pay my beautiful wife a visit in the middle of the day?"

Rosemary smiles, "You can, but there is usually a reason."

"You got me. Bill wants us to meet him in his office in about forty-five minutes. Will you be able to step away?"

Rosemary remarks, "Oh, no. What is it about?"

"He said it wasn't bad news. The only other thing he told me was I would want you around for the news," replies Lee.

"I hope it is the adoption decree. We have been waiting a long time for it to come in."

Lee and Rosemary walk into Bill's office right on time. Bill points to the chairs in front of his desk, offering them a seat. Bill begins, "I have great news for you. The adoption decree came in for Patrick. He is now officially and legally yours. I'll just need you to sign the final paperwork." Rosemary and Lee immediately stand, hugging each other. Bill smiles, clearing his throat, "Would you two like to take care of everything now, or would you like to make this a bigger deal and have Patrick and your closest friends around?"

Rosemary immediately chimes in, "Of course, this needs to be a big deal. Patrick is officially a Coulter now. We need to celebrate!"

"I knew you would insist. I think it is a great idea," remarks Bill.

Lee looks between Bill and Rosemary, mentioning, "Rosemary and I will talk about it. Can we let you know?"

Bill responds, "Of course."

Lee says, "Thanks, Bill. We are so happy this part is over. He has felt like ours since we met him, but now we can officially call him Patrick Coulter. We couldn't be happier. Were the child welfare people able to find out any more information about where Patrick came from?"

"Actually, the orphanage in Union City was able to help child welfare track down his birthday and in what city he was born. According to the documents, he was born Patrick Michael Evans in Lethbridge, AB on February 27th, 1910."

Rosemary hugs Bill, offering, "Thank you." She excitedly grabs Lee's arm, leading him outside. "We better get going. We have a lot of planning to do." They walk out of the office arm-in-arm with the biggest grin on their faces. Rosemary asks Lee, "What should we tell Patrick? Should we try to surprise him?"

"A surprise might be fun, but can you keep it a secret from him?"

Rosemary lightly hits Lee's arm, "I can keep a secret." Lee chuckles. "I need to get back to the dress-shop, so maybe we can plan what we want to do tonight after Patrick goes to bed?" She quickly kisses him on the lips, turning around and playfully walking in the direction of the dress-shop.

Later that night, after Patrick is asleep, Rosemary and Lee sit down at the table, ready to discuss what Rosemary is envisioning for Patrick's adoption party. Lee knows Rosemary will probably go a little overboard with these plans, but he doesn't mind. He is for anything that brings a smile to her face and to Patrick's. Lee asks, "What do you have in mind, sweetie?"

Well, Lee. I am thinking of something small in Bill's office. The three of us, Bill, and then Elizabeth, Nathan, Allie, and Jack."

"I like that plan," responds Lee.

Rosemary mentions, "Good. As far as the party goes, we can have it in the saloon and invite the whole town. I envision having games for the children, refreshments, and entertainment of some kind."

"Sweetheart, we can't throw him a huge party every time something noteworthy happens." He pauses for a moment, "Oh, wait. Isn't the school carnival next Saturday?"

"Yes, it is. That's a great idea, Lee. We can have a small gathering in Bill's office in the morning and celebrate the rest of the day with the whole town. I need to talk to Elizabeth about the carnival and the variety show Patrick mentioned."

"Promise me one thing, Rosie? Please don't go overboard." They both chuckle at the thought.

The next day, Rosemary talks with Elizabeth about her plan. Elizabeth loves the idea and is honored Lee and Rosemary want her, Nathan, and the kids to be part of this momentous occasion. Rosemary asks, "Do you need help planning everything for the carnival and the show?"

"I have already taken care of the carnival part. Lucas actually wanted to help with all the booths. He told us we can use some from the Christmas festival. Would you like to take care of the variety show? Get people to sign up and then organize the acts."

"I would love to help. Consider it done. I'll come by the school tomorrow and get the kids to sign-up, and then I'll visit everyone in town to see who's interested. Patrick asked me to sing a song with him. It melted my heart. Do you think you'll want to participate?"

"I'll think about it," replies Elizabeth.

The next afternoon, Rosemary comes to school just before the end of the day. Elizabeth gives her the front of the room to tell the children about the upcoming variety show. She claps her hands getting everyone's attention. Rosemary proudly announces, "How many of you have heard about the upcoming variety show?" About half the students eagerly raise their hands. "Well, as part of the carnival next Saturday, we will have a variety show. Anyone can sing a song, play an instrument, perform a talent, or act out a scene. The act can be between one and six people and can be children and/or adults. Do you have any questions?"

Opal inquires, "What kind of talent?"

"Great question, Opal. You can do magic, card tricks, tell jokes, read a poem or short story."

"What if two acts want to do the same thing?" questions Anna.

Rosemary responds, "I'll be able to see once everyone signs up with what they want to do. I'm sure we can figure out the best way to handle those cases." She holds up the sign-up sheet. "I will leave this here. Talk to your friends and parents about what you would like to do. If you are under fourteen years old, you'll need your parents to sign a permission form. You have until this Friday to sign-up." Rosemary looks around the room at the excited kids. "Are there any more questions?" All the children start talking amongst themselves, so Rosemary takes that as a no. Elizabeth rings the cowbell, and all the children scamper out the door.

"I think it went well. I could see quite of few of the kids getting excited. I think this will be fun," remarks Elizabeth.

"Of course, it will if I am in charge." Elizabeth gives Rosemary a smirk. "Patrick and I are heading to the dress-shop. I have one thing to finish up before we go home."

"I have some papers to grade, and then I can go home. See you later." Rosemary saunters out the door to get Patrick.

The next couple of days, Rosemary is busy visiting all the businesses in town, trying to get people to sign up for the variety show. She is pleasantly surprised when she picks up all the sign-up sheets on Friday. Rosemary thinks to herself, "This will be plenty to fill in a two-hour show."

When she picks up Patrick after school, he runs up to her, yelling, "Mama, Mama. I figured out which song we can sing."

She kneels down to his level. "You did? What is it?" asks Rosemary. Patrick whispers in Rosemary's ear so no one else can hear. Rosemary hugs him, whispering, "I believe you have picked the perfect song." Patrick giggles.

"Do we have to go to the dress-shop today?" whines Patrick.

"As a matter of fact, no. How about we go see if Papa is ready to go home?" Patrick enthusiastically shakes his head yes. They walk over to Lee's office, and Patrick runs in the door yelling, "Papa, Papa. Can you come home with us?" Lee puts his finger on his lips, letting Patrick know to be quiet because he is on the phone.

Lee tells the gentlemen, "Sorry about the interruption. My wife and son just walked in. Do we have a deal, Mister Jones?" Rosemary and Patrick watch Lee's face turn from concern to happiness. "Thank you, Mister Jones. You will not regret your choice. My manager will wire you all the necessary information on Monday. Have a great weekend." Lee hangs up the phone, walks over to Rosemary and Patrick, picks her up, and spins her around. Then he high-fives Patrick.

"I'm assuming good news?" questions Rosemary.

Lee replies, "It is better than good. Mister Jones is a builder who has contracts all over Alberta. He wants to buy lumber from us for all of his current and future projects. This will bring in a lot of money!"

"I am so proud of you, sweetheart," offers Rosemary.

"Who wants to celebrate?"

Patrick yells, "Me, Papa!"

"Okay. I know this isn't much, but since this is so last minute, can I treat you two to dinner in the saloon?"

"I love that idea, Lee," responds Rosemary.

Lee offers his arms to Rosemary and Patrick, "Shall we?"

"We shall. Lead the way, sweetie."

Later that night, after Patrick is in bed, Rosemary sits down at the table looking at the sign-up sheets. She takes out her notebook and gets to work dividing up the acts into four groups:

Lee looks at the clock, realizing how late it is. He joins her in the kitchen, rubbing her shoulders. He kisses her on the top of the head, suggesting, "It's time for bed, sweetheart. It is getting late."

Rosemary puts her hands on top of his, looking up at him. "I am almost done. I'll be up in a few minutes."

The next week goes by fast, with Rosemary focusing much of her time helping the acts practice and fine-tune their performances. She is thankful Patrick is by her side every step of the way. He seems to enjoy watching and helping everyone out as much as Rosemary does. She and Lee had decided to wait and surprise Patrick the morning of the adoption celebration. Lee and Rosemary can't wait to wake him up on Saturday morning and tell him the news. Rosemary plans to fix his favorite breakfast, and they will ride into town on the motorcycle. The family of three will then enjoy the rest of the day filled with games, food, and of course, the variety show Rosemary has worked so hard putting together.

Lee is unexpectedly called out of town Thursday afternoon. One of his old friends needed some assistance in Union City. Much to Rosemary's dismay, Lee decides to head out of town instead of sending one of his workers. On his way out of town, he stops by the dress-shop to hopefully get Rosemary to forgive him. He knows she's not happy he is leaving town so close to the adoption celebration, but he feels obligated to help. Lee picks up some roses before walking into the dress-shop, ready to face whatever Rosemary dishes out. He walks into an empty room, calling her name. Lee hears some sounds coming from the back room, so he follows the sounds. When he finally sees her, he calls out, "Rosie?"

Rosemary yelps, dropping what she is holding. She turns around and is surprised to see Lee. "Oh, Lee. You scared me. You can't sneak up on me like that." She picks up the blouse she dropped, walking it up to the front, setting it on the counter. Rosemary nonchalantly inquires, "Are you leaving now?"

He hands her the flowers, to which she can't help but smile. "I have to, Rosie. James is an old friend and one of my first customers, and he needs help."

"But do you have to be the one to go? Can't you send Jesse or Kurt? Patrick and I need you here. What if you get stuck there and we have to postpone the adoption celebration?" She starts getting herself all worked up.

Lee pulls her in close, wrapping his arms around her waist. "I will be back tomorrow afternoon with plenty of time to spare. I promise. You and Patrick will be fine without me for just one night."

Rosemary rubs his chin with her thumb, softly saying, "Lee, promise me you will be back tomorrow."

"I promise." She hugs him as tight as she can, not wanting to let go.

Lee steps back, taking in his wife. He wipes the tear running down her face, questioning, "Are you okay, honey?"

"Yes, Lee. I am fine." She hastily takes the flowers, putting them in the vase she has on the counter. "I should get some water before they wilt."

Lee studies her for a moment. "Well, okay, then. I will call you tonight when I get there. Tell Patrick I love him, and I am sorry I didn't get to say goodbye to him." Rosemary sadly nods, bringing Lee in close, lightly brushing his lips with hers.

The next day, after school lets out, Rosemary holds a dress rehearsal for the show. Every few minutes, she looks at the time. Rosemary is getting progressively worried because Lee is not back yet. Elizabeth sees how distracted Rosemary has become, so she takes over for her friend. Luckily, Patrick is being distracted by friends, so he does not notice how worried his mother has become. After the last act performs, and everyone leaves the church, Elizabeth sits down next to Rosemary. Elizabeth softly states, "Lee is fine. He is just running late. I know he will move heaven and earth to get here by tomorrow morning."

Rosemary meekly smiles, saying, "I know. I don't know why I am so on edge."

"You have been running yourself ragged the last week or so. You are probably just tired and want tomorrow to go perfectly."

"You are absolutely right, Elizabeth." Rosemary calls over to Patrick, "Are you ready to go, bud?"

"Where is Papa? Is he going to be here for our performance tomorrow night?" asks Patrick.

"He'll probably be here soon. I bet he tried calling us, and we missed him. Let's go home, and I will fix you a grilled cheese sandwich."

Patrick sadly responds, "Yes, ma'am." Rosemary nods to Elizabeth, taking Patrick's hand and walking out the door. Rosemary and Patrick walk into their dark, quiet, empty home.

"Patrick, go wash-up, and I'll fix you a sandwich." He runs upstairs, putting his stuff away in his room. Patrick washes up and sits down at the table. Rosemary gives him a sandwich and a glass of milk. "Eat up. You have a big day tomorrow, so you need to get some sleep." Patrick scarfs down his sandwich, drinks all of his milk, and wipes his face with his sleeve. She gives Patrick a disapproving look, "What did I tell you about using your sleeve, Patrick? You know that is why we have napkins."

"I'm sorry, Mama. I forgot again."

"Come here and sit in my lap, Patrick." She kisses him on top of the head. "I love you so much, and so does Papa. Now, go get in your nightclothes. I will be up to read you a story and tuck you in." Patrick hugs her and runs up the stairs. Rosemary cleans up the kitchen and goes up to Patrick's room, but he is already fast asleep. She turns off the light and takes the book. Rosemary kisses him on the cheek, whispering, "Sweet dreams. I love you more than all the stars in the sky." She waits a moment for him to say his part, but he is sound asleep. Rosemary pulls up his covers and walks out the door with a tear running down her cheek. She walks back downstairs, making some tea. Rosemary is getting more worried as each minute passes. She thinks to herself, "Why hasn't he called? Where is he? Did something happen?" Rosemary hears a knock on the door. She runs to the door, shouting, "Lee?" Instead, she sees Elizabeth walking in the door.

Elizabeth sees the look on Rosemary's face, asking, "You still haven't heard from him?" Elizabeth can see Rosemary fighting the tears forming in her eyes. "What is going on? It's not like you to be on the verge of tears." Rosemary frowns and then tries to compose herself.

"I'll say this, if he is not here in the morning, he will be in serious trouble."

Elizabeth laughs, "There's my dearest friend Rosemary."

"Where's Jack?" asks Rosemary.

"He is asleep. Nathan and Allie are with him. I thought I would come by and check on you."

"Oh, I'll be fine. Lee will probably pull up any time now. Go back and enjoy your time with Nathan and Allie."

"Are you sure? I can stay," mentions Elizabeth.

"Yes, I have some dress designs I should be working on. Thank you for checking on me." Elizabeth gives her a hug before walking out the door. Rosemary sits down at the kitchen table with her sketchbook, trying to focus on her designs, but she is too anxious. Instead, Rosemary busies herself with scrubbing the kitchen and dusting all of the downstairs. By the time she finishes, it's already 11:00 pm. Rosemary pours herself another cup of chamomile tea, hoping it will calm her nerves enough to maybe get some sleep. She is never able to sleep much when Lee is gone. After two cups, she finally gives up and goes upstairs to Patrick's room. Rosemary curls up on the settee with a blanket, just watching Patrick sleep. She says a quick prayer, "Lord, be with Lee. Protect him and get him here safe and sound by 9:00 am tomorrow morning. Amen." Rosemary shuts her eyes, hoping to fall asleep.

Lee has no idea what a mess he is walking into Friday morning. It turns out, his good friend, James Webb, has been sick. His son, Thomas, has no idea how to run the business. How to fulfill an order or how to deliver. Where to find the right trees to cut or how to perform volume estimates. Thomas is clearly out of his league. Lee gets to work, showing Thomas everything he needs to know to keep the company afloat. Any chance he gets, Lee tries calling Rosemary at home or in the mercantile. Unfortunately, she is never around when he calls. Lee is getting worried he won't make it home until Saturday evening, with the way things are progressing today. Once Lee realizes there is more work than he, Thomas, and his employees can handle, Lee calls in some help from some friends in Buxton. With all the extra help, everything is finally taken care of by midnight. Thomas thanks Lee profusely, telling him he can make it home with time to spare if he leaves soon. Thomas offers to fill up Lee's thermos with coffee and send him on his way.

Lee tops off the gas tank with the extra gas he keeps in his car for emergencies, closes the folding top, and jumps in the car. Usually, he doesn't like to drive through the mountains at night, but he has to get home. Rosemary is counting on him being there so they can officially sign the adoption decree. He wouldn't be able to live with himself if he is responsible for them having to reschedule. So, off he drives, hoping he will make it home safely.

About half-way into his drive, the temperature drops, and it starts raining. The rain causes Lee to slow down quite a bit. He struggles to see out the windshield, and his hands begin to freeze from the cold. Lee decides to pull over and wait out the rain. He finds his gloves in his bag, putting them on before taking a few sips of his coffee. Lee covers himself with the blanket he remembers Rosemary keeping under the seat. He can hear her saying, "You can never be too prepared." Lee contemplates to himself what to do. He needs to get home, but he also needs to get there safely. Rosemary will obviously be upset, but she would much rather he come home safely to her and Patrick. Lee shuts his eyes for a moment, praying for guidance and safety.

An hour later, Lee opens his eyes in a panic. He can't believe he actually fell asleep. Luckily the rain had stopped, and he can see the moon through the waning clouds. Lee jumps out of the car, cranking the engine before hopping back in. He takes a few sips of coffee, puts the car in gear, and begins the last half of the drive. He's relieved to know he'll make it home before Rosemary and Patrick wake-up.

The farther he drives, the muddier the road gets. Lee has a couple of close calls with getting stuck in the mud. He's able to slowly accelerate out of a couple of patches he finds himself in. Lee tries his best to steer clear of the thicker mud, but it is just too dark to maneuver himself out of the way in time. When Lee thinks he is finally out of the worst part, suddenly the wheels start to turn, but the car only moves a few inches. Lee tries to slowly accelerate, but the mud is too thick. He gets out of the car, grabbing his flashlight from the back. Lee inspects the rear right tire to see if it has been damaged or if it's just stuck in the mud. He finds some tree limbs to help dig the mud away from the tire. Then Lee finds whatever he can to put under and in front of the stuck wheel, anything to give him some traction. Lee cranks the engine, jumping in the car, hoping he can drive out. He slowly accelerates, but the wheel still spins. For the next hour, Lee continues to dig more mud away from the wheel and look for things he can use for some traction. Lee takes a break, drinks some coffee, and checks on the time. It is already 5:30 am, and he is still a couple of hours from Hope Valley. Just when Lee decides to start walking home, he sees lights coming in the distance. Lee flags down the car and is relieved to see two abled-body men. He introduces himself to them, "Hello, my name is Lee. I've been stuck in the mud for the last hour. Could you please help me?"

The man behind the wheel speaks, "Hello, Lee. I'm Jacob, and this is my brother Micah. We got stuck earlier as well. The rain sure wreaked havoc on this road. We would be happy to help you."

Lee says, "Thank you so much. I need to get home to my wife and my son. They are expecting me to be dressed and ready to go by 9:00 am, and I cannot let them down." Jacob, Micah, and Lee spend the next half-hour pulling Lee's car out of the mud. When it is finally free, Lee is overcome with joy. He pats Jacob and Micah on the back, offering to give them some money for their help.

"No need, Lee. We believe in helping those in need. Now, go to your family," remarks Jacob.

Lee jovially responds, "Thank you, Jacob, Micah. Drive safe." Lee cranks the engine, hopping back into the car. He panics when he looks down at his watch, realizing it is already 6:15 am. Rosemary is not going to be happy.
