Chapter 2: First Mission
Disclaimer: I do not own Soul Eater or any of the characters involved except Lucas and Mira
Lucas and Mira were on their way to the Death Room, earlier in class they'd received a note from Spirit to come to the Death Room. The note didn't mention a reason, but they both had their guesses. Since they'd joined the D.W.M.A they'd noticed they lacked the skills and abilities most of the other students had, and with the school's policy they weren't going to be kicked out unless they caused trouble and flunked all their classes. The pair of them assumed that Lord Death had summoned them for a remedial lesson that was going to help them get caught up and to understand some of the more advanced techniques.
"What do you think he'll have us do?" Mira asked.
"I don't know, hopefully something challenging." Lucas replied.
"Just not too challenging right? I mean, I don't want to die yet."
"We won't die. I won't let that happen."
The pair reached the mirrored door and Lucas leaned forward and puffed out a breath on the door, the slight fogging effect spread out so he had enough room to write: 42-42-564.
"Whenever you want to knock on Death's door." He said.
The fog disappeared and the door swung open revealing a barren wasteland with hundreds of black crosses buried in the sand floor. Great red wooden arches with guillotine blades were hanging above them.
Lucas led the way, Mira grabbed his shoulder and seemed to cower behind him as they made their way toward the center of the room. A minute later they found themselves staring at the back of Lord Death.
"Lord Death! Meister Lucas and Weapon Mira reporting on your request," Lucas said as he stood at attention.
Mira stood next to him self-consciously holding her arm. Death turned around to face them and he held up his giant gloved hand in a peace sign.
"Wassup?" He asked.
Lucas seemed a little off-put but Mira relaxed a little.
"You summoned us for remedial lessons?" Lucas asked.
"No, I didn't," Death replied lowering his hand.
The two of them seemed surprised. "Then what did you summon us for?" Lucas asked.
"I've got a special mission for you two, there's a murderer in Southern America. I need you two to stop him before he kills anymore people,"
"Understood sir!" Lucas said standing at attention again.
Mira tried to stand straight as well, but her body was trembling and it gave her away.
"Calm down Mira, Lord Death wouldn't give us something so difficult to get us killed," Lucas said as they walked through the jungle.
"I don't know, a notorious murderer in South America? That seems pretty difficult," She said.
They continued through the jungles of Brazil as they searched for the notorious murderer 'Diablo'. They found out the guy had started his murder spree in Mexico, where he got his name, and continued down south until he reached Brazil. The last anyone had heard was a vague rumor that said he was holed up in a cabin in the jungle, but only lunatics went after Diablo.
Lucas had laughed this off, thinking the guy wasn't so tough.
"Hold up," Lucas said as he stopped Mira. They looked ahead and saw a small jungle-wood cabin with smoke rolling out from the roof, "This must be it," he said.
Mira nodded, her knees knocking together and her body shaking uncontrollably. Lucas turned to give her his plan when he noticed her shaking. He put his hands on her face and looked her in the eyes.
"Mira, calm down. We can do this," He said.
"No, we can't, we're gonna die. Let's go back to the D.W.M.A!" She whispered loudly.
"No, we won't give up without even trying, we can do this. I believe in you," He said, "You just need to believe in me,"
Mira stared at him. Lucas leaned forward and locked his lips with hers. She blushed and looked surprised but eventually she calmed down and closed her eyes. He pulled away and her eyes fluttered open, her body had stopped shaking.
"Ready?" he asked.
"Yeah," She said with a wistful smile.
He took her hand and she turned into a long sword and shield. He slowly approached the cabin and Mira's face appeared as a reflection in the sword's blade. When they were a foot from the door Lucas lifted his foot up and kicked the door in. He walked in and found an old man staring at him in surprise clutching his chest.
"Oh!" Lucas said looking around, the cabin was barely equipped, a few pans of clay were lined on the walls.
The old man began to say something in rapid Spanish and Lucas apologized as he backed out. He picked up the door and fit it back in place. He turned and put Mira on his shoulder, he began to walk away when suddenly Mira shouted.
"Lucas!"
He turned on his heels and caught a knife stab on his shield.
"I knew it," he said with a grin on his face.
"How did you know?" The old man asked in English, but with a thick Spanish accent.
"Your tone and dialect are off for the area," Lucas answered as he parried the blow and the old man leapt backward.
"You're smarter than you look kid, but that won't save you now," He said as he lunged again.
Lucas dodged the attack by leaping into the air. "Mira!"
"Right!" She turned into a longbow and a quiver of arrow shaft on his back. He held the bow up as he landed in one of the large trees about ten feet above Diablo.
He grabbed one of the shafts and put it on the string, spiritual pink fletchings and an arrowhead appeared on it. He loosed the projectile, but Diablo knocked it aside before leaping into the air after Lucas. Lucas ran down the limb of the tree and leapt to the next one as Diablo cut the branch down.
"How's he so strong?" Lucas asked himself.
"I wonder if it has to do with those murders he's committed," Mira replied.
Lucas turned on the spot and held the bow out with both hands, Mira turned into a large Halberd, the blade of the axe just floating above the branch they were currently on.
Diablo appeared again, he attempted to slice through Mira's shaft but Lucas pulled her back and up hitting Diablo right in the middle of the legs. He fell to the ground clutching his crotch and groaning in pain, his knife landing blade first in the branch. He reached out for it but Lucas grabbed it first.
"I don't think I should trust someone like you to handle this," Lucas said.
A fierce jolting pain jabbed through Lucas' arm and he dropped the knife. Diablo grabbed it and leapt back landing on another branch that was a few feet above Lucas.
"Silly boy, you think you can steal another Meister's weapon,"
"Meister?!" Lucas and Mira shouted.
The knife began to glow, it turned into a golden orb and leapt from Diablo's hand, it turned into the shape of a young man with black hair and darker skin, he looked like a miniature Diablo.
"This is my grandson Miguel," Diablo said as he held out a hand toward the young man.
Miguel sat on the branch with his hands and feet holding onto the branch like a dog.
"You're sick," Lucas shouted at him, "using your own grandson to murder innocent people!"
"No no, he wanted to kill people, but he needed a Meister to wield him,"
"What?" Lucas asked in surprise.
"Miguel craves power, as do I, and with power comes sacrifice, I assume you've heard of the Kishin?" Diablo asked.
"Of course,"
"My grandson Miguel will become the new Kishin, and take over this world so that we may rule from on high!"
"I won't let that happen," Lucas said,
"I don't think there's much you can do to stop it," Diablo said as he held out his hand.
Miguel turned into the knife once again and flew to his grandfather's grasp.
"Let's go, Soul Resonance!" Diablo began to glow as an aura gathered around his feet, it shredded the bark off the branch he stood on and in a flash he disappeared.
"Mira, where are they?" Lucas asked, trying to spot them.
"I'm trying to sense their soul wavelengths already, but so far there's nothing,"
Lucas was suddenly sent flying into a tree as Diablo appeared mid-strike: His knee was extended at chest level and Lucas gasped for breath as he pulled himself free from the tree.
Mira turned into her human form and came to his aid as Diablo and Miguel disappeared again.
"Lucas!" She shouted, "Are you ok?"
"Yeah, I'm fine,"
"What a relief," She said hugging him.
"Mira, we're still in the middle of a fight here," he said as he pat her on the back.
"Oh, right," She turned back into weapon form as a shield and sword.
Lucas stood up and took his normal stance, his shield covering most of his torso and his sword held out slightly. Diablo appeared again and swung Miguel at Lucas, but he caught the attack on his shield and went to slash him, his reactions were slowed though as the attack made contact with his shirt sleeve. Diablo leapt back and examined the near wound.
"Mira, I think we have to try Soul Resonance, there's no way we can keep up with them if we don't," Lucas said.
"But, we've never done it before," Mira sounded worried.
"I think that's because you and I have never been this close to each other's soul wavelengths, let's try it Mira, what have we got to lose?"
Mira was silent for a second, "Ok,"
Lucas pointed his sword upward and put his shield out in front of him, energy began to gather around his feet and an aura of power flowed around him.
"Let's go! Soul Resonance!" The power continued to build and reached its peak before turning into a bright flash. Diablo shielded his eyes and when it faded looked at his opponents. What he saw made his jaw drop.
Lucas was standing in the middle of a charred patch of jungle forest, both hands held a long sword and his entire body was covered in a suit of armor.
"They weren't even using Soul Resonance?" Diablo asked in surprise.
Lucas looked up at Diablo. He leapt off the ground bringing his right blade toward the murderer's head. The blades sparked as Miguel was used to block the attack. Diablo noticed Lucas' left blade coming toward his mid-section and dodged out of the way, but he wasn't strong enough to dodge and block and Lucas' right blade broke through his defense and cut him along his upper arm.
Diablo cried out in pain as the blade seared through his flesh, dropping Miguel he clutched his wounded arm with his free one and glared at Lucas.
Lucas stood there, waiting for him to attack. He didn't understand why, normally he'd jump on his opponent when they were down so he could finish the fight, but now he felt that was wrong and he needed to wait for his opponent to pick up the weapon, even if it meant a dirty trick that could cost him to fight. A voice spoke in his head.
"Better to die fairly, fighting like a man, than to kill in cold-blood against an opponent who can't defend themself,"
Diablo picked up Miguel and went to stab Lucas, but he knocked aside the knife with his right hand easily and then stabbed Diablo with his left hand blade. The knife dropped into the ground burying itself point first into the jungle floor. Diablo looked down at Lucas, a look of hatred obvious in his eyes, he tried to claw at Lucas' eyes, but his helmet protected them from the old man's weak grip. Diablo continued to struggle against the blade, but eventually succumbed to the wound and died. His body became a large storm of black strips before disappearing and leaving a red soul floating in the air before them.
Mira's arms reached out of the blades and brought the soul toward Lucas' armor where her head appeared and she ate the soul. She returned to her weapon state and Lucas looked toward Miguel who had assumed his human form. He was sitting, staring at the moving shadows of the trees.
"What should we do about him?" Mira asked.
"Let's take him back to Lord Death, he can decide what to do after that," Lucas said.
"Ok,"
Later that day Lucas and Mira were walking down the main street of Death City toward their apartment when Mira started to speak.
"Um, Lucas, about earlier, when we were fighting Miguel and Diablo,"
Lucas had his hands together behind his head, his eyes trailed slightly over to Mira who was wiggling awkwardly.
"What is it?" he asked.
"Before we started, you did something to calm me down, do you remember?" She asked, a blush forming on her cheeks.
Now it was Lucas' turn as his cheeks turned a light shade of pink. "I uh, I don't really remember," He stammered.
Mira looked at him and he lowered his arms and sighed.
"Mira, I know I've only known you for a short time, but already I feel like you and I are destined to be together, as weapon partners and… something more,"
Mira smiled before tackling him with a hug. They fell to the street and Lucas looked up at her with a blush on his cheeks, Mira was also blushing brightly. She tucked a stray lock of her pink hair behind her ear and looked away. Lucas followed her finger's action, but then he looked her in the eyes and put a hand behind her head. He pulled her closer and kissed her. She returned his kiss and smiled to herself, knowing this was gonna be an interesting journey.
