Chapter 5: Butting Partnership
Disclaimer: I do not own Soul Eater or any of the characters involved except Lucas and Mira, my brother owns Jack and Lisa.
The next morning Lucas and Mira woke up to another sunny day in Death City, they silently got ready for school. Making their way to class they sat down and each got out their respective notepads. As they waited for Stein to enter they saw two familiar figures walk in, the pair that had been standing outside the school two days ago.
"Hey! There they are Jack!" Lisa said with a grin as she pointed out Lucas and Mira.
Jack nodded to Lucas as the pair approached.
"We have a message from Lord Death, he says you need to follow us to the Death Room immediately, you have an excuse from class," Lisa recited in a very accurate impersonation of Death's high-pitched voice.
Mira turned back to Lucas who shrugged and picked up his notepad. The two packed up and followed the newcomers. Lucas took note of the fact that the two's clothes had been repaired, or that they were wearing new, identical outfits to their originals. Lisa whistled innocently while she walked down the hall, swinging her arms out in an exaggerated manner while Jack loomed behind her silently.
"So, Jack was it, how do you like the DWMA so far?" Mira asked.
"Oh, Jack can't talk," Lisa chimed from the front.
Jack looked at Mira and nodded confirmation, then he put a thumbs up with a slight smile.
"Oh, I'm sorry," Mira said forlornly as she looked at the floor.
Jack waved his hand in front of his face then turned to continue following Lisa. Eventually the group arrived at the mirror and Lisa blew fog onto its surface, but she paused.
"Uh… what was it he said again?"
Lucas walked up and wrote 42-42-564 "Whenever you want to knock on Death's door," he recited.
The door swung open allowing them entrance.
"That was it!" Lisa grinned before rushing ahead into the room. The others followed behind and the door clicked shut behind them.
They approached the platform Lord Death used as an office, Lucas and Mira stood at attention while Jack lazily tucked his hands in his pockets and Mira made a mock salute while sticking her tongue out toward Lucas and Mira.
"Hey, howdy, what's up, how ya doin'?" Death asked as he turned to face the students.
"Lord Death, you sent these two to get us?" Lucas asked indicating Lisa and Jack.
"Yes, they have quite the story, and like you, they are a new partnership in the school. I was hoping you could show them around and help them get acquainted, since you yourselves were in that situation not too long ago," Death explained.
"Of course sir," Mira answered.
"Also, Professor Stein has something he wishes to discuss with you," Death turned and Stein stepped into view.
Turning the screw in his head he nodded to Lord Death then looked at the four students.
"As you know, Jack and Lisa are new, but so far have shown a remarkable ability to soul resonate, since you two have also begun to show this ability I feel it's time you take it up to the next step and learn to resonate with other people,"
A look of concern crept across Lucas and Mira's faces.
"What's wrong? Oh, the thing from the other day, yes, I gave that some thought, if I remember correctly your last name is Ivonz right?"
Lucas nodded.
"The Ivonz are known for their unique take on practical martial arts, where most require you to keep a level head they let their anger and other emotions take control, giving them decreased pain senses, as well as increased muscle control, but their wavelength is sent into a sporadic mess. I have an extra credit assignment for you two: Figure out a way to let Lucas let loose with his Ivonz Arts and still be able to Soul Resonate,"
"Professor that's impossible! Nobody can even come close to that kind of wavelength!" Lucas shouted.
"Anything is possible for a Weapon and Meister if they work hard enough at it," Stein told them, "Now that that's settled why don't you four head back to class, I'll be along shortly,"
The students nodded, turned and left. After they were gone Stein turned back to Death.
"You've sure let some interesting people in as students recently. An Ivonz, the child of a witch and two multi-form weapons that aren't members of the Nakatsukasa clan,"
"Well, I felt that if anyone needed a chance it was those kids. They've each experienced their own hardships that make them unlikely to be able to resonate with anyone else, so it made to partner them together," Death explained.
Stein nodded before turning to leave, "I'll trust your judgement on this one, and I'll try to keep an eye on them,"
The group made their way into the classroom and took their seats before Stein entered and took his position at the front. He picked up a piece of chalk and began to teach on the concept of "Team Resonance" The ability of multiple meister and weapon pairs to resonate their souls and perform the technique multiple times, further increasing their power. When the bell rang everyone gathered up their belongings and went to leave, but Stein stopped Lucas, Mira, Jack and Lisa.
"You four are to come with me," He said.
They nodded and followed him through the hallways until he led them into the trees next to the DWMA building.
"This is going to be your training spot, and for today's session your task is to hit me," Stein said as he turned to face the students.
They looked at each other in surprise.
"Come on then," Stein said as he lifted his hands up in a fighting stance.
Their bags hit the ground as the two girls entered their weapon forms. Mira gasped slightly as she felt a slight burning sensation from Lucas' touch on her longsword's handle.
"Are you alright?" Lucas asked her.
"Yeah, nothing I can't work with," She replied.
Jack lifted Lisa in her Longbow form and a blue spirit-arrow appeared on the string as he drew and fired. Stein knocked the arrow aside with his arm before charging. Lucas lifted his arm and Mira also produced her shield form which he used to interject himself between Stein and Jack. Stein slammed his fist into Mira's shield and sent a jolt of electricity up Lucas' arm. With a shout of pain he let go of Mira as she dropped to the ground. Stein went for another punch but a barrage of blue spirit-knives forced him to dodge back. Jack ran forward, the small knives between each of his fingers and a pouch on his belt. He threw one hand then the other at Stein who leapt to dodge the first wave and roundhouse kicked hard enough to stop the second wave's momentum.
Lucas knelt down and picked up Mira, he closed his eyes and took a breath. Forcing his wavelength to stabilize again.
"Lucas!" Mira shouted.
He opened his eyes to see Stein mid-swing for an uppercut to his head, with incredible reflexes he leaned back letting the fist hit air. He then went for his own jab at Stein's side, but Stein used his other hand, caught Lucas' and then twisted his arm hard enough to make his shout in pain and drop Mira again.
Stein then pulled Lucas and kicked him behind him, he slammed into Jack who had been running up behind Stein with Lisa in twin shortsword form. The trio slammed into the ground in a mess of tangled limbs and the two blades. Stein knelt down and picked up Mira, she immediately felt his wavelength match hers as he shouldered the blade and looked back toward Lucas and the other two as they stood up.
"Jack, I think it's best if you leave the close-combat to me, provide support with your arrows and I'll see about getting you an opening," Lucas said as he wiped blood off his lip with the back of his fist.
"No offense Lucas but without a weapon you're at a real disadvantage here," Lisa told him.
"Not this time," He said as his skin took on the red hue of his Ivonz Arts.
"You're gonna do that again!? You couldn't even wield Mira two days later,"
"I'm using a weaker version, I'm not giving in completely," Lucas explained, "I wouldn't be talking to you right now if I had,"
In a flash he was off, charging toward Stein with his hands clenched tightly into fists. Stein brought Mira around and held her sideways, his left hand supporting her blade. Lucas went to deliver a devastating looking punch but Stein lifted Mira to block and Lucas hesitated, altering his aim he slammed his fist into the ground causing a massive cloud of dirt and dust to fly up into the air.
Jack meanwhile crossed Lisa's blades and the two began to glow. Lisa's form changed into a bow, a much larger bow than her normal form. Jack planted her in the ground leaving a small crater, he then began to pull back on her string with his whole hand, a larger spirit-arrow appeared. It looked almost like a spear with how large it was. Aiming the weapon at Stein as Lucas charged, the last second block forced Lucas to alter his fist's direction and kick up a dust cloud.
"Can you see?" Lisa asked.
Jack didn't nod, he didn't respond at all, his mind was completely focused on the shot. With an audible twang the bowstring released its spear-like projectile toward Stein. The ground beneath the arrow was being torn up from the winds off the arrow as it traveled toward the teacher. Stein saw the shot and leapt to the side to avoid it. Lucas then charged him but Stein lifted his foot and kicked Lucas in his jaw sending him reeling a few feet away.
"That's enough for today, it's obvious you aren't going to be able to touch me let along get in a good hit," Stein told him as he threw Mira into the ground point first.
She reverted to her human form and ran over to Lucas to see if he was ok. His body returned to its normal hue as Jack and Lisa made their way over.
"Why don't you practice some more and come see me when you think you're ready," Stein told them.
He turned and left the group in the woods.
"Lucas, are you alright?" Mira asked as he put her hands on him to try and shake him awake.
"Yeah, I'm fine, just took one hell of a hit is all," Lucas sat up and rubbed his jaw.
"Why don't we call it a day? It's getting late," Lisa told them.
"Yeah," Lucas stood up and Mira followed. The pair made their way home while Jack and Lisa followed them all the way, when they were about to open their front door Lucas asked.
"Do you guys have a place to stay?"
"Not yet, The school is still sorting something out for us," Lisa answered.
He looked to Mira who nodded.
"Then why don't you stay with us tonight, we can make room,"
"Yay! Thank you!" Lisa shouted happily as she darted in as soon as Lucas opened the door.
Jack nodded silently as he walked past.
"This is going to make for an interesting night," Lucas sighed.
Mira giggled, "I wonder if Jack eats as much as you do,"
"I don't eat that much!" Lucas replied indignantly.
Mira started laughing.
"I was wrong before, we just had a bump on the road, things are only going to get better from here,"
