A/N: Hey guys, gals, and non-binary pals! Thought I'd write another short one-shot about everyone's favorite useless gays. This takes place post S2 Finale and is definitely not an original idea lmao. Hoping to make this one a little bitter-sweet.
Hope you enjoy!
Disclaimer: I don't own the Owl House
Cool blue twilight trickled through the bedroom of Luz Noceda as she laid awake with tired eyes, unable to drift asleep despite the aching plead of her heavy eyes and tired body. Her mind raced wildly despite her body's protest as it flashed the day's events before her. Eda. King. The CATs. They could all be gone, and she didn't stay behind to help save them. Her stomach grew sick as she recalled the look on the young Titan's face as his claws slipped from her hand or her last moments with her mentor. God, why hadn't she stayed?
Tears bubbled at the corner of her dark eyes as a sob climbed up her throat. The gentle snoring around her reminded her that she couldn't make any noise that might wake her sleeping friends and girlfriend from their slumber. She ran a shaky hand through her hair and drew a ragged breath to try and settle herself. A glimpse of lavender hair caught her attention through the corner of her eye. Carefully, she turned to her side to face her beloved witch and shuffled closer to the sleeping girl.
The moonlight bathed Amity's soft, pale skin; Luz could've sworn she was glowing. The twist in her chest began to unclench slightly as she stared softly at the girl in front of her. It was a shame, she thought, that this is how they would have their first sleepover together. Of course, the universe would have to practically end before she ended up in such a lucky scenario. Gently, the human brushed a lock of lavender hair out of Amity's face.
If there was one good thing about this situation, it would be this moment, Luz pondered to herself. She smiled gently at the soft grumbles from her girlfriend but shrunk back slightly as she realized Amity had begun to stir awake. One at a time, the tired golden eyes of her beloved opened slowly as they adjusted to the moonlit room. Realizing her human had moved closer, the girl reached her hand out to Luz and placed it on her cheek. The lavender-haired witch examined her girlfriend's face, noting the exhaustion and sadness that welled behind the eyes she adored so much. Her thumb swirled circles against her cheek as Luz buried herself closer into the embrace of the witch.
Luz returned her girlfriend's gesture and placed her hand lightly against her girlfriend's face, "Hey..."
"Are you okay, Luz?" Worry poured into her voice despite it barely being above a whisper.
The human let out a sigh, her eyes wide with sadness and fear. Still, she smiled shakily, forcing her face to not give away more than it already had, "I'll be okay, sweet potato. I'm just...worried. I think I may have screwed up by not staying behind. What if Eda and King and everyone are..."
"Hey, hey," she moved her hand to rest on top of the human's, "It's gonna be okay. They are gonna be okay. We're talking about Eda the Owl Lady and the King of Demons, not to mention Lilith! Those three can handle anything. They will be okay, I promise."
Luz gnawed nervously at her bottom lip as her mind clouded with unease. She wished Amity's words reassured her more, but her anxiety clawed through her like knives in her chest, "I'm just so tired of all of this, Amity. I'm finally home with my mom, and I'm here in the human realm with you, and this should be something wonderful, but it's not. The Demon Realm and people I love are in danger, and I'm not back there helping."
"You haven't done anything wrong or selfish by stepping through that door, babe. You did what you needed to at that moment. Keeping yourself safe is not something you should feel guilty for because you're just as important as the witches and demons of the other realm," she squeezed her partner's hand gently.
"But Belos-"
"What Belos has decided to do has nothing to do with your choices or whatever The Collector decides to do."
Luz closed her eyes with a furrowed brow, meditating on her girlfriend's words. She was right, she supposed, but she knew the feeling of guilt and anxiety were yet to leave her. After a moment, her eyes opened once more to rest on her beloved. She traced the silhouette of the slender witch with tender eyes as she tried to memorize every detail of her face. Luz noted her deep gold eyes, dusty lavender hair, milky skin scattered with scars and scrapes, pointy ears, and how they twitched when her hand grazed them.
This caused Luz to smile to herself in slight amusement. That was something she hadn't noticed before. Tentatively, she let her finger trail along the edge of Amity's sharp ear. It twitched against her finger once more, and Amity breathed a content hum.
"It's funny..." the witch mumbled.
"Hmm.?"
"The Demon Realm and the Human Realm are so incredibly different, yet compatible and intertwined. The people, the animals, and even the weather are different, but they're so alike in many ways. Take you and me, for example; you and I are the same for the most part. Our biology is so similar, but you can find tiny differences that make us unique," she traced her black-painted nail along the human's jaw before stopping at her ear.
"What's your point, hermosa?"
"My point is that I'm glad you and I are different but can still be together no matter what realm. No matter where we are or what's going on, we'll still be by each other's sides. Your little round ears won't stop me from liking you," Amity teased as the girl ran her finger along the ear's edge.
The human mimicked her actions, "And your pointy ears won't stop me from liking you, either."
An idea sprung forward in Luz's mind. With a grin, the human leaned forward and placed a gentle kiss on her girlfriend's ear, earning a blush and a gasp from the witch.
Terribly amused at her blushing partner, she pulled back, "What's wrong?"
Her face grew even redder as the tips of her ears burned scarlet, "I've never been kissed there before! It's sensitive..."
"So your ears wiggle when you like something?"
The witch nodded embarrassedly. Luz smiled wickedly at this before peppering Amity's ear and cheek with gentle kisses, causing the witch to giggle in delight. As Luz pulled away, her girlfriend leaned forward and plastered her face in the same rapid, tender kisses. The two tried their best to contain their blissful laughter and pressed their foreheads together, smiling widely. Half-lidded eyes met as hazel swirled with gold, and rapid heartbeats thudded in tandem against their ribs.
For a moment, Luz felt safe. She felt safe and okay, and happy. As she looked into the beaming yet sleepy face of the girl before her, she felt her heart melt and a wave of bliss crash over her. Her smile softened as she whispered, too awestruck to obstruct the words that poured from her mouth, "I love you."
A small gasp fluttered through Amity's lips, her breath hitching in her throat. Both girls' eyes grew wide at the confession just passed between them.
Before she could stammer out an explanation, the witch's look of surprise grew into a wild smile, and a vibrant shade of pink rose to her cheeks and dusted the points of her ears. Amity opened her mouth to speak but felt unable as happy tears threatened the corners of her eyes. Finally, she managed to find her voice, "I love you too, Luz."
The human beamed at her words, suddenly forgetting the exhaustion that plagued her body. She tackled the girl, rolling them over, leaning over her witchy girlfriend. She attacked her once more with delighted kisses before placing a kiss on her lips.
She pulled away slowly before resting her head in the crook of Amity's neck. The lavender-haired girl let out a contented sigh and ran her fingers through the human's dark hair to her delight.
As the slender witch pet Luz's hair gently, the human felt her thoughts wander once more. Amity was right. Being a human didn't make her any less important, nor did it make her an expendable pawn in the Demon Realm's troubles. For tonight, she could keep herself and her friends safe and cast her worries into the darkness. Just like Eda and King, her safety was valuable.
The two lay there a moment before Luz realized Amity's breathing had slowed. The return of gentle snores reminded Luz of how tired she was. Casting a glance towards her alarm clock, her eyes felt heavier as they attempted to read the brash neon "3:30 A.M." that protruded from the digital screen. Finally, she re-settled into Amity's chest and closed her tired eyes.
Before she succumbed to the inevitable grasp of sleep, she said a silent thank you to her partner for offering a moment of sunlight into her stormy thoughts. For tonight, she would enjoy being in the arms of the girl she loved under the roof of her mother's care, and she would be alright. For tonight, everything would be okay.
