It was cool and strangely dim in the underground Federation base, the dark metal walls muting the light in a way quite unlike the bright whites of high command. A high security, high clearance research and interrogation facility, Deta 8 had seemed the perfect place to develop and execute her plan without the President or high command ever having to know. Ignoring her less than stimulating surroundings, Supreme Commander Servalan gazed down at the body laid out on the slab before her, her pure white dress standing out like a beacon in the dull laboratory.

Her scientists had done a good job, she conceded, as she examined the man's distinctive features. If she did not already know what she was looking at, she never would have guessed. Dark brown hair fell neatly around a calm, familiar face but his eyes were closed, expression blank and peaceful, showing no sign of his usual sharp intelligence. He was almost handsome, she mused for a moment, or would be if he were real.

''Well, it looks like him at least'' she granted somewhat dismissively, only half acknowledging the scientist beside her. ''Is It alive?'' she added after a moment, noting the utter absence of movement.

The man nodded. ''Physically yes, supreme commander, but it has no consciousness, no awareness, nothing but the low level nervous functions needed to keep it alive'' he explained. ''I'm afraid it's the best we could do without outside help.''

''Oh, don't worry,'' she replied smoothly, flashing him a satisfied, predatory smile, ''that will be quite sufficient for what I have in mind. Besides, it won't even have those for long.''

Turning away once more, Servalan carefully picked up the modified blaster beside him, hefting it experimentally as she inspected it. It was new, a prototype she had had specially developed to handle Blake and his troublesome band of rebels. They had never actually been tried but the trap was set and soon, very soon, it would be sprung and their usefulness would finally be put to the test. ''These had better work'' she muttered under her breath before activating her communicator. ''Is everything ready?'' she asked briskly.

''Yes, Supreme Commander, we're all set here'' her troop commander replied, his voice buzzing electronically through the intercom.

''And you know what to do?'' she asked again, smiling with satisfaction at his affirmation. ''Good, then continue with the plan exactly as instructed and the liberator will soon be in my grasp.''
