Thank you readers for all the positive reviews until now, this is my first time writing anything at all and i didn't expect anyone to like it, i'm trying to make this as deep yet waltery as i can and i'm writing this story as i go so there may not be a chapter everyday, now before you dive into this chapter, this is a guideline for you to better understand what goes on inside walter's head.

bold font is walter's IQ/brain/logic

tilted font is his ego/self/pride

underlined font is his EQ/heart/morals

"Were They Worth It ?"

..

..

..

of course they were,

..

..

right ?

..

..

Were they ? were they ?

..

..

..

i don't know anymore.

What does worth even mean ? , How do you measure the worth of something or someone ?

well worth means value, importance.

Well ,what are the things people define as important ?

a lot of things are important, basic needs like food, water, air, less basic needs like a roof, finances, books with knowledge we need to understand what's around us, tools we need to acomplish neccessary tasks

So the value of something always comes from our need for it ?

no, there are things people deem important without actually needing them.

like momentos, keepsakes, toys, photos, they have sentimental value, people deem them valuable without needing them.

So then the value of something always comes from sentiment ?

no, people don't get emotionally attached to food or water or air.

but people do get attached to tools or books sometimes.

So for something to be deemed important, it's value and worth have to come from either need or sentiment or both ?

yes. yes.

So if there's no need nor sentiment, the value of something disappears ?

that's correct. i suppose so.

Can the value of something change ?

yes, of course.

Like what ?

antiques for example, their price increases over time.

some foods' nutritional value decreases over time while others' increases over time.

the value of knowledge increases over time.

So only practical and financial value changes ?

no, sentimental value changes too.

Like what ?

like toys that most normal children value above all other belongings then throw away when time passes.

like photographs, people tend to value them more as time passes.

So only time changes the value of things ?

no. no.

So value can change with other things ?

yes. yes.

What else changes the value of things ?

the value of devices and tools also changes with constant usage, the company that manufactures them, their capabilities, and the better devices if they are made.

the value of food changes with it's nutritional value, and how easy it is to get and preserve.

the value of clothes and accessories change with their materials and looks, the brand that makes them, and decreases with permanent stains, tears, increases with how much effort it took to make, how many exist and how long they were preserved.

the value of photos changes with the people in them and the events they capture.

*he remembers megan*

the value of a keepsake from a dead person is much more valuable than when they were living.

the value of a book depends on the contents, the author, the materials even if the subject is the same.

the price of a painting depends on the content depicted, the canvas, the paint, the painter and whether they're alive or dead.

the price of a meal changes with how it's made, the ingredients, how good they are, where it's served, how it looks, who made it.

So a lot of factors change the value of things.

yes. yes.

What do all important things have in common then ?

well it's not the source of their importance.

neither is it how their importance changes or is affected.

*he tries another angle of reasoning*

What would you do with an important thing ?

it depends on the nature of the thing and how we interact with it, we breathe air, we drink water, we eat food, we take shelter under a roof, we read a book, we use a tool.

people look at a photo or a keepsake to remember someone or a pleasant event that they'd like to remember.

In other words, the purpose it serves.

correct. yes.

What would you do for an important thing ?

for air one would go to a place with fresh air, they'd work and pay for water, food, and pay to preseve them, they'd spend effort making a tool or buying it and try keeping it as pristine as possible, or spend time reading a book or writing it or spend money for a shelf to put it on instead of leaving it lying on the floor, they'd pay for a house or build it.

one would buy a camera to take a photo, or buy a keepsake or have someone give it to them, they wouldn't leave it around, they'd try to preseve it.

So in other words you'd give for an important thing ?

yes. yes.

And the amount you give corresponds with the amount of importance a thing has ?

correct. correct.

So the amount you give for something can never exceed the importance it has ?

of course. of course.

So do things always have a quantifable understandable value ?

no.

What doesn't ?

Life.

Then why is it important if you don't understand it's value ?

i don't know, it just is.

Then is life valuable to all people ?

no. no.

if it was there wouldn't be killers.

So therefore the value of the same thing could differ from someone to the other.

correct. correct.

it's been proven to him more than once.

What things' values differ from one person to the other ?

well, food has the same nutritional value to almost all people yet all of them eat different amounts each, resulting in different bodyshapes.

someone may prefer a kind of wine and drink it a lot while the other wouldn't

a doctor would always read a book on the human body while an artist rarely would.

a person with a healthy lung wouldn't care about air as much as one on a respirator

a small house would be a lot more valuable to a person that doesn't have one compared to a rich person.

while a photo of someone could be valuable to someone, it could be just a photo of a stranger to another.

a keepsake from someone could be valuable to someone, and a just a trinket to another.

So all things have different values to different people ?

no. no.

sometimes one person could value different things the same amount, they'd do the same things for them.

and sometimes multiple people could value the same thing the same amount.

and sometimes multiple people could value different multiple things the same amount.

or the same multiple things the same amount.

So all people can never value the same thing a different amount each or the same amount as each other.

yes. yes.

And one person can never value everything the same different amounts as another person does.

yes. yes.

So as long as something exists it always has a value ?

..

..

no. no.

somethings human never knew the existence of to value.

So therefore value isn't always with the thing the moment of it's creation.

yes. yes.

Then where does value actually come from ?

..

..

..

..

from humans.

of course!

humans assign value to things.

whether sentimental or practical or even ascribed.

They assign value by need.

or will.

or by nature or circumstance.

That's what all important things have in common, their value is assigned to them by people.

People assign practical value to things based on how much they need them, and the values of the same things are different because the needs of the people assigning them are different.

people assign different ascribed values to things because their wills are different.

people assign different sentimental value to things than each other because it's based on nature or circumstance, and people's natures and circumstances are different.

Wait. wait. wait.

..

..

..

The needs of people are different,

..

their wills are different,

..

their natures and circumstances are too.

..

The things they assign the value to are different, even the things that they don't assign a value to are different.

..

difference is always there.

..

these 4 things can never be the same in a single thing or person.

..

Difference isn't a variable,

..

..

..

it's a constant.

..

..

Things are different.

people are different.

value is a human product of difference .

no one is the same as other in everything.

Nothing is the same as the other in everything.

there's no such thing as perfectly same.

There's no such thing as indifferent.
