His intentions for her are unknown, his true purpose of keeping her hidden in shadows just like the ones that she harbored in her fractured mind.

Prologue

Her body ached all over. She tried to move, but her arms and legs felt as if they were made of lead. Her eyes opened, black onyx lashes fluttering slowly. A dark sky greeted her dazed head, and she realized she was laying underneath the night sky. Kagome tried to move yet again, but the moment she did, it felt like spikes had been dug into her arms. She turned her head to look for the source of pain, and she spotted the sticky crimson coating her arm and bleeding through the white fabric of her shirt.

It stained the ground beneath her. She lay in a shallow pool of blood. Was it all her own?

Kagome forced herself to move. Though she couldn't recall anything that might've caused her to end up like this, she knew she had to get up. Fighting off the pain, she pushed herself up onto her feet. Her legs shook as they struggled to support her own weight, and she took a single step forward.

She felt cold, her skin almost numb to the touch. The green skirt she wore was dirty and torn, much like her shirt was. Blood, both dried and fresh, stuck to her skin in an unhealthy amount. She came to a halt upon taking her first step, confusion welling up within her chest.

"W-wait…" Kagome glanced all around her, ignoring the way her head spun when she looked around too quickly. "Where am I…?"

Nothing looked familiar to her. She tried to paint a sort of mental image of the places she knew, but nothing formed. Black shadows coated her mental eye, blocking anything she tried to recall. Her heart began to pound rapidly within her chest, and panic entered her bluebell eyes.

The sound of branches crunching from behind her made her whirl around- despite the way her body protested the sudden movement. Black dots peppered her vision, and she nearly fell forward, but she managed to catch herself before that could happen. Her vision slowly cleared back up, and she was frozen as a figure emerged from the tree line behind her. Her eyes widened as the figure drew closer. Kagome wanted to back away, but her feet were glued to where she stood.

An imposingly tall stature left her feeling small as she remained frozen directly across from them, but that wasn't the only thing that struck her. The mask upon their face was golden with two large horns that pointed upwards. It also had dark hollowed eyes that she could feel directed at her own face. Their body was entirely hidden by a sweeping brown and white cloak with an emblem-like pattern in the middle of a golden trim.

Silence occupied the clearing they stood in, and she wasn't sure if she should find something to say or not. Before she could, the stranger finally spoke- their voice a deep masculine.

"How curious."

Unease spiked in her, yet she couldn't will her feet to move. She wasn't sure if it was fear or pain that bound them to where she stood. He came closer, and she found herself tilting her head back just to keep her eyes fixed on that golden mask with hollowed eyes. When he reached for her, she reacted without thinking. Kagome threw a hand up and a misty, transparent barrier lifted to surround her. He drew his hand away, even though her barrier wouldn't do anything to cause bodily harm to him.

Confusion flooded her as she stared at her reactive action with widened eyes. Though she had done it, she didn't understand how or why it even happened. Kagome let it fall out of shock, lifting a hand and covering her mouth as she struggled to understand anything. Nothing came to her through the haze befalling her mind and she shook her head. That action proved to be a mistake because black dots began to speckle her vision all over again. Stumbling back, her balance failed her, and she fell to the ground.

All around her, pink sparkleflies fell to the ground. The lasting remnants of her barrier faded so slowly, sinking into the ground and causing it to grow a pleasant shade of pink. She gazed at her hands, a flurry of emotions flashing through her blue eyes.

"I-I don't understand…" Her vision began to blur, and hot tears began to race down her scratched-up cheeks. She couldn't remember anything. Why couldn't she remember? The masked figure with her knelt to be closer to her level, and she flinched when the air around her shifted. Still, she lifted her eyes and let them land on the stranger. This time when his hand reached out to her, she buried down her instinctive reflex and merely flinched when his hand landed on the side of her face. He wiped her tears away much like a parent would.

"Don't be scared, little one," he stated quietly. "You have no reason to fear me."

Her insides screamed for her to not trust him. Kagome didn't shy away, but she did downcast her gaze. How was she supposed to trust anyone when she didn't have her memories?

"Tell me," he began, not bothered by her silence, "what is your name?"

The only thing she was capable of remembering with perfect clarity. Her brows furrowed, her hand tightening into a tiny fist in her frustration at her lacking memory. "Kagome," she told him. Her voice was quiet as she spoke.

"Ah… and what happened to you, Kagome?"

The question caused a surge of pain to rock through her head, and she winced at the headache that suddenly overcame her. A flash of crimson eyes glowering at her eventually peered through the opaque shadows covering her mind's eye, and she felt overwhelming dread at the sight of them alone. Still, despite that, she didn't have a viable answer to give.

"I…-" Kagome felt a fresh wave of tears steadily forming. "I don't remember," she finally said, forcing the words out of her tightened throat. They felt poisonous to say.

"What do you remember?"

Her heart felt heavier than ever at that question, and she wanted to reel away from him but found herself unable to move. "I don't remember anything, other than my name."

"Is that so?"

As she nodded, his hand fell away from where it rested on the side of her face, and she lifted her gaze to watch him stand. Before she could say another word, he gripped her arm and tugged her easily back onto her feet. Her steps were unsure as she was lifted up from where she sat. "W-What…-"

"Come with me," he stated, and she wordlessly fell into pace with him. "I'll see to it that you get bandaged up and get fixed with a set of clothing that isn't in tatters."

Though she wanted to question his kindness, she couldn't find the words to say. With her lacking memories and no clue as to where she belonged, she really wasn't in the position to deny this stranger's kindness. Exhaustion was winning her over, and all she could do was nod as she fell into pace with him.
