Months passed since Professor Professor and Doctor Doctor's visit with the faerie royal family for afternoon tea. In the blink of an eye, it seemed like it was already springtime. To be more specific, it was now May 23rd. In the interim, the couple had managed to plan out most of their wedding before it was to take place at U.Z.Z. on August 8th. They'd even made sure to invite Professor Professor's family members to the event (Frau Frau and Maestro Maestro included). As for Doctor Doctor's side of the family, most of her family had died out a long time ago, so instead the former Expendables who were still loyal to her (Oluremi, Adrian, Kent, and Min-jun included) were invited.
"It's hard to believe our wedding day is just around the corner," Professor Professor said.
"I know," Doctor Doctor replied while tinkering with her latest invention. "It's honestly mind-blowing how fast time seems to move."
"Jawohl. Soon enough, it'll seem like we've been married for a long time."
Doctor Doctor didn't respond right away, choosing instead to tinker some more on the project at hand.
"Something bothering you?" Professor Professor asked. "You didn't say anything there."
"Not in particular, no," Doctor Doctor replied. "It's just... what Maxime did to me still haunts me. It's just hard to forget when someone shoots at you and then leaves you to die in Siberia. Do you think he was right to do that to me?"
Professor Professor just looked at her, puzzled. "Come again?"
Doctor Doctor stopped tinkering for a moment. "Do you think it would've been better if I died in Siberia instead?"
"What? No, of course not! Why do you ask?"
"Part of me wishes I'd died that day. I probably deserved it, too. After everything I did to the world, all the pain and trauma I inflicted on people, how can I still stand here and say I have a right to be alive when other people should be walking among us instead? There are people who should've been born and had a chance to live but didn't, children who should've started school but didn't, and couples who should've anticipated having kids but didn't; and it's all because of how terrible of a person I've been."
"Not all of your contributions to the world have been bad, though. Remember when you helped protect the Elphabae from the Impostors? Sure, you had ulterior motives for doing so, but at the end of the day you helped to stop genocide on what could've been a monumental scale."
"That was on a different planet."
"Oh, that's right. You also helped me fight off those Impostors at the Dolce Kensington Club. Who knows what kind of damage they would've caused if not for us?"
"To be fair, that's true. Still, I'm not sure how I can live with myself knowing everything else I've done."
Professor Professor sighed. "All I can really tell you is that we all reach a point in our lives when we find things we don't like about ourselves. I wish I could do more to help you with how you're feeling, but I'm not really a therapist and don't want to be treated as such."
"Thanks anyway... I guess. I'd hate to have people only remember me as a baddie and nothing else."
Just as Professor Professor was placing a comforting hand on her arm, he suddenly got a call on his cellphone.
He picked it up to see that it was Poopity Scoop calling him. "Hello?"
"Oh, Professor Professor," Poopity Scoop replied. "Thank God you picked up. I have some urgent news I need to share with you, so I'm gonna need you to put me on speaker for this."
"Will do." Professor Professor did just that. "Alright, what's the news?"
"T.H.E.M. have been conspiring with North Korea's junta in the hopes of getting their hands on nuclear weapons. Before I tell you anything else, though, I need to tell you my new name of the day. As you already know, for reasons of security, my name is Changed Daily. Today, you may call me..." A beep could be heard on the other end. "Oh... Cardigan Backyardigan."
Professor Professor and Doctor Doctor burst out laughing for a few seconds, then quickly forced themselves to calm down.
"Anyway, the world might be under threat if T.H.E.M. go through with joining forces with North Korea," Cardigan Backyardigan continued. "The reason I asked you to put me on speaker is so I could suggest that we send in Doctor Doctor to gather the information we need."
Doctor Doctor could barely speak after what she'd just heard. "W-What?"
"Yes, you heard me right, Doctor Doctor. We want to send you in to infiltrate your former organization. I know it might be a sore subject for you these days, but look at it like this. If you can stop T.H.E.M. and North Korea from potentially devastating all life on Earth, we'll consider you an honorary U.Z.Z. agent."
"That's, um..."
"Yes, I know. It's a lot to consider. Think it over."
Doctor Doctor initially had no idea how to respond. On one hand, this was a chance to prove she wasn't just a baddie and could actually do a great amount of good in humanity. Would this change a lot of people's minds? Maybe, maybe not. At least she would be doing this to prove there actually was some good in her. On the other hand, she wasn't sure she wanted to take on Maxime again, especially after he left her dead in Siberia two years ago. Sure, she'd been nursing a desire for revenge ever since that day, but would it have been worth it in the end? How could she be certain that she'd had a better chance next time when he probably wouldn't be so merciful that time? She really wanted to give him what was coming, though.
Eventually, Doctor Doctor sighed and she came to a decision. "Alright, I'll do it."
"What?" Cardigan Backyardigan asked.
"I'll do it. I'll infiltrate T.H.E.M. for you. I'll do anything to get back at Maxime for what he did to me and my friends."
"Good. I had a feeling you'd sign on for this."
"Uh, thank you?"
"Certainly. Alright, I must hang up now. I've got a busy day ahead of me."
"Bye bye, Cardigan Backyardigan," Professor Professor said.
"Goodbye."
With that, Cardigan Backyardigan hung up. Professor Professor and Doctor Doctor were soon left alone to talk about the decision made to infiltrate T.H.E.M.
