Modern AU

"I love you, Jaune."

An eleven-year-old Weiss turned to face an equally young Jaune.

Jaune heard this and turned to Weiss, his face contorting in a weird manner. He found it strange. Why did she say that?

Weiss face turned into a teasing one. "Heyy~~ did you get excited?"

"I don't think so, shortie. As if you could ever excite me," Jaune snorted. What was in her head when she said that? Oh great, now my player died because I looked away.

"Wh-what did you just say? Okay, one more time then!" Weiss bit back, looking affronted. How dare he not fall for her charms?

"It'll just end the same no matter what, you know?"

It all started one day in sixth grade. We were just messing around, doing what kids do. When suddenly, we came up with a game.

The "I Love You" Game.

It was nothing much, just a simple, stupid game made by simple, stupid children who didn't know any better. The rules are pretty straightforward: the participants take turns saying "I love you" to each other, and the first one to get embarrassed is the loser.

That was it. It was supposed to be a simple game. But how…

[Four Years Later]

…did it get into this?!

"I love you, Weiss," Jaune said, staring into her eyes while biting into a parfait.

"Aww, I love you too!"

Weiss tried to look "flustered", but with one of her eyes closed and the smug aura she gives off, it's obvious she wasn't.

"Why don't you just admit you're embarrassed and quit being stubborn?" Weiss snickered.

"You're the one who needs to admit defeat, you know?" Jaune replied.

With the both of them blushing and flustered on the inside, a text box appeared, representing their thoughts: We started the "I love you" game as kids, and yet… we're still playing it now… as high schoolers!

In a house, a voice was heard.

"You're so sneaky, Jaune! You were totally, definitely embarrassed just now!"

"N-no I didn't! I didn't lose. It's a tie, okay?! A tie!" a fifteen-year-old blonde was shown. A title box appeared and showed information.

[Jaune Arc, age 15. Graduated from middle school earlier this spring.]

"Geez, why are you so stubborn?" Weiss' face was shown pouting. Another title box appeared.

[Weiss Schnee, age 15. Jaune's childhood friend.]

"Since you just won't admit you're embarrassed, it's getting harder to settle this." Weiss then smiled.

"However, the look you have me earlier when you said 'I love you'…" that smile turned into a grin as Weiss leaned under her arm.

"… You were trying to act cool, right~?"

"Hgrk!" Jaune flinched.

The girl went for the attack.

"Yup, you're definitely embarrassed! I guess I win then, riiight? Hmmm?" Weiss leaned over the table and poked Jaune.

"What kind of reason is that? You know that whether or not I was embarrassed is something I'd only be able to tell!" the blonde retorted.

"Ugh… not that stupid excuse again." she grumbled.

Weiss crossed her arms and looked away. "It can't be helped then, another draw. Look at that, even though I won, I still called it a draw. You should be grateful that this wonderful girl is so nice to you."

Two adults were shown on the screen. A man and a woman. They looked to be in their thirties. The woman had blonde hair and green eyes while the man had blonde hair and blue eyes. These are Jaune's parents, Alexander Arc, and Juniper Arc.

"Those two are at it again, aren't they?" Juniper observed.

"They're playing that 'I love you' again, aren't they?"

"They couldn't come to an agreement to who wins, so it's been a tie 'till this day." Alexander smiled.

"So now, they made it a rule that they could do whatever they wanted to make the other person nervous." The Arc patriarch began.

"So basically, it's now a battle of endurance that can't be settled until one of them admits their own defeat, huh?" his wife finished.

Then suddenly, she grinned. "Wait… WHAT?! Whatever they want… do you mean…?" her eyes sparkled.

"Childhood friends who can't be honest with each other…" Alexander grinned and went close to Juniper.

"…Shall we watch them writhe in agony as they let their pride get in the way of happiness?" she continued with a big smile and her eyes sparkling.

"Yes, yes let's do that!" the both of them said together and cackled.

Weiss was sitting across from Jaune when she looked at the clock.

"Ah, it's that time already? I have to go home now." She exclaimed.

"Already?" Jaune repeated.

Weiss noticed this and smiled slyly.

"What? You're missing me already? I haven't even left yet."

"What? No, who would miss you?" Jaune kept his cool.

She hummed. "Hey, Jaune?"

"Yeah?"

"Tomorrow's the entrance ceremony, right?"

"Yeah…?"

She smiled. "I hope we're in the same class together this time."

At this point, if it were not for the game, Jaune would have blushed. Madly.

"I mean… ever since 3rd Grade, we've been in different classes. It would be fun if we could be together for all our school years and its events, right?" Weiss continued.

"We-well, it wouldn't really bother me If we weren't together." Jaune lied as naturally as he breathed.

"Is that so…" however, knowing Jaune for as long as she did, she knew he was lying.

"Well, see you later, Uncle! Thanks for the meeaal~~" Weiss stood up and went for the door.

"Yeah, thank you, and have a safe trip home." Jaune's dad said just as Weiss close the door.

A fist slammed the table.

"Damn it!" Jaune exclaimed. "There she goes, making fun of me… again!"

"What the hell was that 'thanks for the meeaal~'?! She usually acts more mature – like an adult -, saying all those cocky things, but suddenly you start talking all sweet like a filial child? The gap between your maturity and your child-like behavior is soooo cute! It's driving me insane!"

"Aaah! You're too cute!" Jaune gushed and yelled while slamming his face down the table.

"Huh, honest when little Weiss isn't around, eh?" His father watched his son and chortled.

Juniper joined in on the conversation. "Little Weiss is getting cuter by the day, is she not? She's bright, polite, a very pretty voice, and very popular at school, right?"

"As expected of my niece!" Alexander nodded.

"Maybe the reason she's been going home earlier than usual is because she has plans with other boys!" Juniper said and watched as Jaune slumped further…

"She's probably face-timing them on her scroll!" …and further

"I guess it's only a matter of time until Weiss gets a boyfriend and Jaune loses, yeah?" …and further into the table.

"Ugh… how did this situation even happen…" Jaune groaned and recalled the memories.

Back when we were children – when both were in 6th grade -, where the game first started, I was never embarrassed by Weiss.

A flashback of Weiss whispering "I love you, Jaune." to Jaune sitting next to her while he replied, "Yeah, yeah, I love you too."

I've lost most of the games they've played.

Another flashback of Jaune losing to Weiss in various games; like tag, and video games.

But with this one… I could finally see the look of frustration on her face.

A moment where Weiss confessed to Jaune with him not taking her seriously, making her pout.

But, it was all just a distraction of mine… And then, one day, in 8th grade…

"I love you, Jaune." A teenage Weiss whispered into Jaune's ear.

"Wh-?" Jaune covered his ear in surprise and looked back to see Weiss grinning face. He wore glasses.

"Oh? What was that expression just now? Did you get excited, embarrassed, perhaps?" she said in a smug tone.

Weiss' voice, which was usually so familiar to me… has never sounded so sweet just then. And on that day, for the first time in my life…

I became conscious of Weiss.

The screen showed moments of Weiss' body, her laying down, and applying lip gloss to her lips.

Weiss was growing, maturing up faster than I was, and I began to be swayed by her every move.

An image appeared on the screen. It was of Weiss looking behind to see Jaune staring at her.

Before I knew it, I was…

Jaune and Weiss are seen walking together.

"Want some, Jaune?" Weiss said and handed over a water bottle to her childhood friend.

"Hm? Sure…" Jaune accepted and was about to drink when he flinched and stop. He looked right at the bottle.

An indirect kiss…

Jaune shook his head. What was going on with him? Ever since that day…

Jaune paused his thoughts as he saw Weiss in his peripheral view.

She grinned. "You must've been nervous, thinking about an indirect kiss, weren't you?"

"Wha—who'd ever think of something like that?" Jaune immediately chugged it.

The girl's eyes widened in surprise. "Hey, don't chug it all, what if you empty it? I still need it!"

Jaune and Weiss walked together; with Weiss teasing Jaune and him trying to not get flustered by it. They are overall having a fun time.

Ever since I fell in love with Weiss… What was once just a distraction, the "I love you" game has found new meaning.

If it…

Jaune was sitting in a class, looking across the room. Weiss is seen smiling and being social with her other classmates.

Weren't…

Jaune was seen walking past Weiss in a hallway, not acknowledging each other's presence.

For this game…

Jaune was walking down a hallway when he sees someone approaching Weiss from behind. The guy had blue hair and lent Weiss a book. She saw it and smiled. They were smiling and talking together, looking like they were enjoying each other's presence. After a few minutes, she bid farewell and approached Jaune, a huge and beautiful smile on her face.

I don't know what else would have kept us together.

And so, the game continued… for four years! Four years!

"I found myself being completely toyed with… At any moment, I feel like the words 'I like you' could slip out my mouth…" Jaune said, frustrated.

"It's because you're fooling around instead of being serious." The Arc matriarch slapped his head.

"You don't get it, honey. That's just the heart of a man who just can't resist." Alexander shook his head, sounding like a sagely man.

"All this time, I could have been telling her how short she is, or how her chest is so flat a bullhead could mistake it for a landing pad… But if I told her that now…!"

An image of a smiling Weiss appeared in Jaune's head.

"Hmm? So stubborn." She shook her head and walked up close to Jaune's face.

"The truth is… you really thought that I was cute all along, didn't you?" her face turned mocking.

"Then again, Jaune's a boy too, huh? If you've been thinking about my body this whole time, you're probably in the mood for 'that' and very aroused, huh?" she chuckled looking smug.

"I would die of embarrassment! I absolutely, definitely cannot lose this game!" Jaune yelled, red in the face. Then he slumped down into the table while his mother gave him some juice.

"And yet, this whole time that I've been getting pushed around…"

A montage of Jaune was shown. Various images of him working out, studying, switching out his glasses for contacts, and various other things that could be counted as self-improvement.

"To win over and make Weiss blush in embarrassment, I've been pushing myself hard since the 9th grade… Being tall is probably the only thing good about me…"

"Hmm… But the hair salon I recommended was good, right?" Juniper began. "To be honest, I was surprised at how much a hairstyle can change you. I was surprised, you know? I thought someone was pretending to be my son but instead became a better version of him~" she said with a smile on her face.

"Mom… that's cruel." Jaune said with tears on his face. "Besides, why can't I just make Weiss blush? I tried to do everything, and even got a new haircut—" Jaune would've continued but he was interrupted by his mother.

"Hm? It's probably because you're still a child on the inside. Did you really think you'd change that much just because of a haircut? Don't be stupid." His mother said bluntly with a smile on her face.

"Ack!"

"Don't pick on him like that, June. My son's improved so much in such a short period of time." The blonde's father joined in.

"I remember the time when he was still a kid, wearing T-Shirts and Pumpkin Pete hoodies that his mother bought for him." He reminisced.

"However still, little Weiss is a tough one, okay? You need to work hard to win her over."

Jaune grumbled. "I knew that… I have a plan in mind."

"Oh?"

"It's not like I've never tried it before or anything, you know?"

[The next morning]

[The day of the high school entrance ceremony.]

Inside his room, Jaune was seen putting on his uniform and looking at a mirror.

"Phew, at least I actually look decent now…" He shuddered, remembering his middle school days where he had terrible hair and his family laughing at him.

"And then…"

He looked at his personal desk. On the desk, was a comic. Not just any comic, a romance comic. It was the type that teenage girls would love.

"There's this!" He grabbed it.

Whenever Weiss came over to visit, she would read romance stories like this with his little sister. A flashback came with Weiss saying that she loved stories like these.

"So, I'm sure I can use this as an example, this comic is filled with girls' hopes and dreams! Surely, it'll be useful as a point of reference, pointing me in the right direction." He looked at the pages.

I think this kind of thing might just work for me… However, this feeling… that's going to be a little tough. There's a guy at school like that – always flirting around with the girls. I never understood it. What are they doing anyway, courting? Is it like birds and their mating dances?

A thought appeared in his head – it was Weiss and that blue-haired piece of shi-

No, this is not the time to be complacent! I must make a move! But to be honest, does she even like me in the first place? We've been playing this stupid game forever but I'm still not completely sure about it. What if she actually just considers this as a game? What if I did confess and she rejected me? What if…

Fuck.

I can't move forward. I'm a coward and completely uncool. There's no way that I can match Weiss like this. That's why…

The screen comes up to show Jaune's serious and determined face.

I have to make her admit defeat, I'll be worthy, and cool! And finally, when I do, when I win the "I love you" game, I will… confess to her!

Jaune then left his room and went downstairs. He was thinking of his plan.

First, I'll pick up Weiss from her house, then…

An image of a handsome Jaune waiting for Weiss appeared, he then walked near her and performed a wall slam, making her blush.

Yes, exactly like that! Prepare yourself, Weiss! Now that I'm in high school, I'm a completely different person! I'll definitely make you blu—

Whatever thoughts he had disappeared when he opened the door and saw Weiss, wearing a school uniform, and had pigtails instead of her usual side-tail.

"Good morning, Jaune." Weiss greeted. "I was just about to ring the doorbe—"

She was interrupted by Jaune suddenly collapsing and kneeling.

"What the—Jaune? What's wrong?" she asked, concerned for her friend.

"What the hell, an angel appeared." Jaune muttered. "I was blinded and almost lost. That was dangerous."

Why the hell was she here? She was always late to leave in the morning, something about beauty sleep…? Also, why the hell is she so cute?! It's just a uniform! Her maturity and girlishness are brought out in a perfect, exquisite balance, and her hair looks silkier than usual too!

No good, my mind's going blank! I can't believe I was knocked down so easily…

Weiss approached Jaune and had a look of superiority. "Oh? What's this...?"

"Just now, were you excited to see me in a uniform?" she jumped and twirled.

Jaune covered his eyes. Why the hell was she making such a cute move?!

Weiss giggled.

Yes! Yesyesyesyesyes! I got a really good reaction out of him! Well, that's to be expected. I woke up early and spent 2 hours getting ready; I took a morning bath and did my hair, I've been taking good care of my skin and overall keeping myself pretty. He has to be flustered!

A montage of Weiss getting ready and dressing up appeared. Her brushing her hair, applying makeup, and putting on her uniform.

Still… doesn't he understand why I'm trying so hard for this game? I want to win it so that he'll finally see me and accept me as a girl… I've liked him for a long time now, ever since that day… doesn't he get that? I know that lately, it's been working a little better… I don't think he will ever admit it but…

A flashback of Weiss and Jaune as kids, and a blurry image of him in dark uniform surrounded by other people with black clothing, was shown.

It's foolish for me to assume that. I want him to tell me himself. That "you're cute" in his own words, not in the game, but in real life. I definitely want to win! My pride as a maiden is at stake, it's fine though, I'm trying! I'm doing my best!

She looked up, motivated. But then, she turned to Jaune.

Still… doesn't he look so cool in his uniform?!

We go to Weiss' point of view, seeing Jaune as this overly handsome Adonis of a man. Definitely someone seeing through rose-tinted glasses.

He even waxed his hair! Did he wriggle the ends himself?! Oh my god, that's so cute!

She turned her face away to hide her gushing over him.

I never imagined that someone who looked so plain and average would become so attractive to me! Darn it, Jaune! You're too cheeky! However, I've already imagined you wearing the uniform many times now! I'm already prepared for this; I've developed a resistance! Weak as it may be, it's still resistance! Ha!

"I'm too cute to look at directly, huh? That's why you turned away, right?" She put her hands on her hips.

Jaune shook his head. "No, you misunderstood, it's morning, you know? The sun was just too bright for my eyes, that's all."

"Hmph." She pouted.

While the blonde teenager looked like he has his composure, in reality…

Calm down! Calm the fuck down! If I lose here, I'll end up just like how I was in middle school! Now that I'm in high school, I'm a new man… which means, I can do this!

Suddenly, Jaune walked right up to Weiss' face and slammed his hand to the wall behind her.

"I think you're the one who's been looking at me, Weiss." Jaune smiled.

.

.

.

Ohmygodohmygodohmygodohmygoddddd! It's a…. It's a wall slam! His face, his face is so close, so close—too close! Weiss turned her head and looked away from Jaune, face steaming.

What the—why did I do that? JAUNE YOU STUPID IDIOT! Her face is so close, so cute! While Jaune looked up, hiding his beet-red face from Weiss.

Back to Weiss, her heart was beating fast. When did he learn this trick? He'd never done anything like this before—and what's with the wall slam? That's so cheesy! Just like in her romance books! Besides…

She turned her head a bit to look at Jaune. Her face reddened even more. He didn't even button his uniform properly! She can see a bit of his chest! Is this it? Is this the moment…? Could it be that he's been preparing to take her down? This dunce!

She looked at his face. But still, he doesn't look used to doing this? First time, maybe? How sweet. Although he may have caught her off guard, he's still not ready! He'll pay for that!

Weiss grabbed Jaune's collar.

Jaune looked surprised. What is she doing all of a sudden?

"I know you're trying to be cool, but you're a little sloppy." She buttoned his uniform.

"There, that's better, isn't it?' she smiled at him. Jaune turned away.

She grinned. "What's wrong, Jaune? Could it be… you just got nervous from a simple, little touch?"

"What? I don't care if your hands touch me—" Jaune gritted his teeth and immediately grabbed Weiss' hands—

"Ah!" Weiss yelped.

"Huh, what?!" Jaune followed. What happened? Do her hands hurt? Did she have an injury?

"Why did you shout all of a sudden?" he asked.

"Oh, that… it's because… Well—you grabbed me out of nowhere!" she stammered.

Cute.

Jaune stared. What was that reaction? Wait…

Could it be, just now… she was…!

"Oh dear, you let me go all of a sudden, is a bit of handholding and skinship too much stimulation for you, perhaps? Then again, you are a man…"

"What? Who'd ever be stimulated by you?" Jaune scoffed. "You're still as ugly as ever, you sure that you're a high schooler starting today?"

"Why—you!" Weiss hmphed.

"Maybe you do have a point." She began. "Maybe I wasn't looking the part, yeah?"

Jaune looked over and…Hmm…WHAT!

Weiss was pulling up her skirt, showing off her pale legs.

"You… what are you-!"

It kept going up until she stopped it just below her butt.

"There, what do you think? Doesn't it look cute?" Weiss smiled and spun around.

Jaune hid nosebleed. That's too far! Too short, how can she expect a healthy young male like himself to withstand such a sensual attack?

Weiss put her hands behind her back. "With me like this, you won't be able to help notice me every time I'm in your sight, right?"

"I wonder how much longer you can keep being stubborn?

"You're not going to school dressed like that, are you?" Jaune questioned seriously.

"Hm? So, what if I am?"

"You'll get in trouble at school. Don't do it."

Weiss smiled in satisfaction, noticing how Jaune approached her. "Are you feeling embarrassed already? I can't blame yo—"

"I'm not." Jaune reached for her skirt and pulled it down to knee level.

He looked into her eyes. "Think a little more about how all the other guys will see you."

"That…" Weiss looked away. "That's not… you just think that cause you're looking at me with perverted and malicious intentions, Jaune."

She then looked at him in shock.

"Wait! That means I win, right?! If you said something like that, you're conscious of me, aren't you?" she exclaimed. This is it! She won, right? That means-

"Idiot. I said other people, not how I see you. As far as I care, pocky sticks are more attractive than your legs." The blonde declared.

"What? Why? You were all red in the face just now!" Come on! Just let her win!

"Was not! You're the one redder than a tomato!" Why can't she accept defeat!

The two of them stared at each other in annoyance. Why does he/she have to be so insistent?!

"Hey, the two of you should hurry up or you'll be late." A voice interrupted them. They turned to see Jaune's older sister, Saphron, leaving for work.

"Oh—right! Come on, Weiss!"

"Wait up!"

The two of them went outside and ran. Saphron stared at them leaving.

"Those two… they're still the same even in high school, huh?" she said, smiling.

The scene changes to Jaune and Weiss walking together on their way to school.

"It's 'cause you're so persistent that I'm going to miss the entrance ceremony." Jaune argued.

"Huh?! You were the one getting all serious and mad, you dunce!"

"Not as much as you were, Ice Queen!"

"Don't call me that! And what was with that wall-slam, huh? Not to mention the waxed hair and the way you're dressing up, thinking you're so cool – it's not like you in the slightest! You're just doing this because you're afraid of losing, aren't you?" she went off on a tangent.

Weiss kept walking until she noticed that Jaune wasn't next to her. She turned around, seeing him staring right at her.

"W-what?" she asked. Why was he staring at her so intensely? She's never seen him look at her like that before.

Jaune was silent for a few minutes, just looking at Weiss. Then he spoke. "Nothing."

"Eh?"

"I just thought that it's been a long while the last time I saw you that frustrated." Jaune walked past her and kept walking.

"Hey! Stop being cheeky, don't get too carried away, dummy!" she pouted.

"You're the one getting carried away, thinking you were showing off your beautiful legs like that…"

"Oh—you did not just say that!"

The screen zooms out of them as a text box appeared.

[This is the story of two stubborn people, at the mercy of the "I love you" game.]

A/N: Yeah, I have no idea. I was thinking of just replacing the cast with Ren and Nora. But I'm an avid fan of White Knight, so yeah.

Anyway, bye.
