Over the next few weeks, Anna noticed that Fred was acting a bit odd around her. He seemed to be avoiding her, and when they ran into each other in the halls or common room he would make up some excuse to not talk to her. Anna wondered if maybe she had said something to upset him. She couldn't remember saying anything though, and surely Fred would have told her if she had said anything. She wasn't going to lie, it hurt. She was walking with Hermione from Charms to Potions when she saw him talking with Angelina Johnson. She couldn't exactly say why, but she felt her blood begin to boil when she saw him tuck some of Angelina's hair behind her ear.
"Are you alright?" Hermione asked, nudging her, and Anna forced herself to turn away from Fred and Angelina. "Yeah...I'm fine. Let's just head to class."
"Anna-"
"Look, I'm fine, really. Let's just go before we're late for Potions."
"She's been so touchy lately." Hermione complained to Harry and Ron later that week. "I can't even mention Fred's name without her snapping at me. And it all started when she saw him with Angelina."
"Bet you anything that she's jealous." Ron suggested, and Hermione looked at him like he was crazy. "Why would she be jealous?"
"Because she likes him!" Ron exclaimed. "Hermione, I can't believe that you don't see it!"
"She would have told me!" Hermione huffed. "I'm her best friend, she would have told me that she has a crush on someone!"
"Unless she doesn't want to admit it, even to herself." Harry suggested. "She probably doesn't want to admit that she likes him in that way. Hell, even Fred won't admit that he likes her."
"Obviously he doesn't." Hermione retorted. "Otherwise he wouldn't be with Angelina, would he?"
Harry shrugged. "I guess." He was going to have to talk to Anna about it later.
That night at dinner, Harry asked his sister if she was feeling alright. "You've just been snapping at everyone lately."
"I'm fine." Anna mumbled as she picked at her food.
"Really? Because it really doesn't seem like it-"
"I said I'm fine!"
The other Gryffindors at the table ceased their conversations and looked at the twins. Anna pushed her plate away and stood up, storming back to the common room. Harry was quick to follow her. "Anna, please. I'm really worried about you."
"Well don't be, I'm fine."
"Anna..." He lowered his voice. "Is this because of Fred and Angelina?"
Anna froze. "No." But her voice cracked, betraying her.
"Anna...you like him, don't you?"
Anna rubbed her arms before silently nodding. Harry sighed as he wrapped his arms around her. "I'm sorry Anna."
"It hurts." She whispered. "I didn't think that it would hurt this much. Harry...I like him."
"I know." Harry murmured as he hugged her. "I'm so sorry Anna."
Fred came in then with Angelina, and Anna pulled away from Harry. "I think I'm going to go to bed early tonight." She mumbled before making her way up to the second year girls dorm. Harry sighed as he watched her walk away. He wished that he could help her somehow.
"This is all Wood's fault you know." George said to Harry. It was about a week later. Fred and Angelina were now officially a thing, and Anna was avoiding the two of them as much as possible.
"What do you mean?" Harry asked. They were both in the library. Harry was working on a Astronomy essay, and George was doing his Potions homework.
"Oliver thought that Anna was becoming too much of a distraction for Fred. Told him to 'forget all about Potter', as it were. Granted, I don't think he wanted him to be with anyone at all, he thinks having a significant other would take our minds away from Quidditch. Although if he had to let us date, he would probably want us to be with someone on the team."
"So it's his fault that my sister is miserable." Harry muttered.
"I wouldn't be too hard on him mate. Quidditch is his whole life, it's all that he cares about. Besides, given some time, I'm sure that Anna will move on."
"I hope so. I hate seeing her like this."
Three more weeks passed, and Anna did seem to be getting a little bit better. That is, until she found out that Lockhart had formed a dueling club.
"Honestly, hasn't he caused enough damage?" She groaned to Ron. They were sitting on one of the common room couches. Well, he was sitting. She had her head laying in his lap, claiming that she was more comfortable this way.
"He's completely mad." Ron agreed.
"I think a dueling club would be fun." Hermione said. She was sitting next to them in on of the scarlett colored oversize chairs.
"Normally I would think that too." Anna responded. "But keep in mind that this is Gilderoy Lockhart, so something is bound to go wrong."
Hermione and Ron were glad that Anna was starting to seem like herself again. While she hadn't completely gotten over her crush on Fred, he seemed happy, and that was really all that she cared about.
"McGonagall's getting on me about trying to get Lee to not be so 'biased' during games." Anna continued, throwing her hands up in the air. "An impossible task if you ask me."
"Watch it!" Ron yelped. "You almost smacked me!"
"Sorry Ronnie."
He blushed at this, causing both of the girls to burst into fits of giggles.
"Oh shut up." He grumbled, which only made the girls laugh even harder.
"What's all the commotion?" George asked as he plopped down next to Hermione. Fred was there too. If Anna didn't know better she would say that he was scowling at Ron.
"We're just learning exactly how easy it is to make your younger brother blush." Anna laughed, and George sniggered. "It's very easy, we always have so much fun with little Ronniekins."
"Leave me alone!" Ron groaned in embarrassment, his cheeks now the same color as his hair.
"Oh let's leave the poor thing alone." Anna giggled. She glanced at Fred, biting her lip before turning away. "I just remembered...I have to study for DADA." She got up and scurried up to her dorm. So much for getting better. Hermione sighed and she shook her head. She wasn't sure how much longer she would be able to deal with the tension between Anna and Fred.
"And Harry Potter caught the Snitch!" Anna shouted. Lee was stuck in the hospital wing with a cold, so she'd been forced to commentate this game all by herself. "Gryffindor wins against Hufflepuff!" She sent a sympathetic look Cedric's way. He was the Hufflepuff Seeker after all. After the game, the Gryffindors celebrated by having a party in the common room. Anna grimaced as a sixth year came up to her. "Hey love." He drawled, and Anna could smell the alcohol on his breath. How did they even sneak beer in in the first place? Anna tried to gently push him away. "Yeah, not interested."
"Oh come on, don't be such a party pooper."
Anna rolled her eyes. "You are aware that I'm only twelve right?"
"So? I won't tell if you won't." He sent her a wink, causing her to throw up in her mouth a little bit. "Yeah, I'm just gonna go-" She yelped as he grabbed her wrist. "What the hell?! Let me go!"
He pulled her closer to him. "Not till I get what I want-"
"Oi!" Fred came up, grabbing Anna out of the drunk student's clutches. "She said that she wasn't interested mate. Now sod off."
The drunk Gryffindor glared at Fred. "You her boyfriend or something?"
The tips of Fred's ears turned pink. "It doesn't matter if I am or not, you need to leave her alone, or I'll tell McGonagall about what a perv and pedophile you are."
The Gryffindor stumbled away, and Anna looked at Fred. "Um...thanks for that."
"You're welcome." He mumbled. "That guy's a jerk even when he's sober."
There was an awkward silence between the two of them.
"Um...I should probably get back to Angelina." Fred mumbled, and Anna nodded. "Angelina...right..."
She watched as Fred walked back over to her, pressing a kiss to the girl's lips, and Anna was pretty sure that she could hear her own heart breaking. But...he was happy. That was the important thing. She plastered a smile on her face before going up to the dorms. It was only when she was alone that she let the tears fall. She knew that this had been coming; that Fred would fall for someone who wasn't her. Who was smarter than her...prettier than her...better than her. So why did it still hurt so much? She closed her curtains and tried to stifle her sobs so that the other girls coming in wouldn't hear her. It seemed to work; none of the other girls peeked through the curtains to see if she was alright. Anna pulled her blankets over her body, and cried herself to sleep.
