Chapter 3: New Tactics

Rebekah stood against the door as her sister appeared before her. She smiled at Hela who returned it with her own. Hela wrapped her arm over Rebekah's shoulders as Rebekah placed her arm on her sister's waist. "Did she buy it?"

"I saved her from you, who's been a bitch to her since you arrived. She'll see me as an ally, someone she can trust, like Elijah, to keep you and our brothers in line. I'm certain she'll come to meet me during the party." As they were about to open the door, they were stopped by a barrier at the threshold.

The door opened to reveal Finn on the other side with a young brunette. "Marie, please invite our sisters inside."

The young girl nodded. "Welcome home misses, please come in."

Hela and Rebekah stepped over the threshold as they felt the barrier preventing their entrance fall away. When they entered the house, they came face to face with four of Klaus' hybrids, two men and two women, who stood in the parlor.

"What is this?" Hela asked.

Klaus came down the stairs. "Since you wanted the house warded, we hired a human and signed the house into her name." Klaus came to stand before his sister. "I sent most of my Hybrids out of Mystic Falls, as you said. Only these four remain."

Elijah walked into the foyer. "I called one of my witches. The house is spelled. No one outside will be able to hear or see anything happening or being said in the house. We've been making the preparations for the ball."

"The hybrids were told to spread rumors of your return," Finn added. "We're hoping to connect to our allies once more. Perhaps even Henrik."

"Good," Hela said. "You're all dismissed." She waved her hand at the hybrids. "I don't trust your hybrids, Niklaus."

"They're sired to me. They're grateful because I gave them the gift of not having to turn every full moon." Klaus said as the men followed their sisters into the parlor. "They will do anything and everything I say."

Hela sat down on the couch and crossed one leg before the other. "And when they are no longer grateful? Sirebonds can be broken. You took them from their families, threaten their lives, and turned them into creatures they hate. You may have unsealed your werewolf half, but you know nothing of pack dynamics. They will eventually betray you."

"Then I will kill them. I can always make more hybrids."

Hela sighed. "Niklaus, you cannot always default to violence as it has been proven that many people do not take it well when their lives and the well-being of their loved ones are threatened. If violence was the answer, you'd have the doppelganger cowering at your feet, willingly giving you enough blood to make an army of hybrids. You only have a few dozen and the doppelganger and her friends fight you at every turn. You've pushed them so far that they're willing to gamble on anything to kill you and our family. You need a new tactic because the one you're using isn't working." Hela stood off the couch and walked up the steps, leaving the rest together in the parlor.

October 23, 2010

Klaus spent most of the night pondering his sister's words. In many ways, he's the exact opposite of his sister. Hela preferred to use diplomacy to make allies, but she could be just as cruel as any of their siblings. While he made threats and mutilated his enemies, Hela preferred efficiency. She preferred to make allies, but those who didn't fall in line got the ax. The Blood Ax. He had seen her behead many of their enemies. Those who betrayed her, those who had conspired against their family, and those who dared rile her temper all fell at her hands.

He remembers a time when they were living in a feudal court in Sweden. Several of the small lords disrespected her for being unmarried. She simply smiled and accepted ridicule. But when some of the same lords demanded that Rebekah marry one of them in order to overlook their identities as vampires, she murdered the whole court, put the lords' heirs in charge, and established an alliance with them. They lived peacefully in the land for centuries until they moved to England. To this day, their family holds titles and lands in Sweden.

"A show of force is necessary when someone needs to be made an example of."

Hela was right. Threatening Elena and her friends only made them more desperate. They became worst enemies. And he could not impress Caroline if he killed all of her friends and locked the doppelganger away. Perhaps being a bit more diplomatic would not only gain the loyalty of his hybrids but also endear himself to a certain outspoken blonde baby vampire.

"What the?" Klaus turned around to find Tyler standing at the threshold of the mansion as he was forced back by the barrier. He took out his cell phone to call Marie to invite Tyler in, but he thought against inviting his wayward hybrid into his family home.

"Go around to the back," he told Tyler as he made his way to the doors that led to the back garden.

"So you have a human living in the house now?" Tyler said.

"My sister has made me realize that it's better to be safe than sorry. I don't want any unwanted, unfriendly vampires finding their way into my home now with my family living in the mansion," Klaus replied.

"So, what? Did you lock a human in your dungeon or something?"

"No. She's currently going to college in DC. Brilliant, isn't it?" Klaus grinned. "Now, Tyler, I want you to give me your honest opinion. Are you trying to break my sire bond?"

"Yes," Tyler replied without hesitation. His eyes widened as he looked at Klaus with a face of pure terror. Surprisingly, Klaus simply shrugged and did nothing.

He thought he'd be angrier, but he had the whole night to think on his sister's words. The fact that Tyler had been actively working to break the sire bond was unsurprising.

"You're not angry?" Tyler asked, his brows furrowed in confusion.

"Oh, I'm furious, but it's come to my attention that I've been a less than desirable Alpha to my pack. What I want to know is how you're trying to break the sire bond and why."

"Are you kidding? Since I became your hybrid, my friends have ostracized me, they don't trust that I won't report everything to you, and I'm a danger to Caroline. You told me to bite her, knowing that a hybrid bite would kill her. I'll break the sire bond to be with Caroline, even if I have to break every bone in my body a thousand times to do it. I know you have a thing for her. I will never give you a chance to take her away from me."

"Hmm, I see. So it's about Caroline." A wide grin spread over Klaus' lips as he looked at Tyler. "You don't really think you're the epic love of a girl like Caroline, do you? She's ambitious and bright and wants to see the beauties of the world. I can give her that." He stalked around Tyler as he spoke. "You're a Lockwood, a founding family," he said condescendingly. "Everything you are is tied to this little town. Small town boy, small-town life, it won't be enough for her. There will come a time when Caroline will want to leave this town. Perhaps one day, it may be in a year, or even in a century, she'll come to me. She'll turn up at my door and let me show her what the world has to offer." He grasped the back of Tyler's head and looked straight into his eyes, compelling him. "You are no longer sired to me. You no longer have to do anything I say. You are free. You can do whatever you want and go wherever you want."

The moment Klaus removed his hand, Tyler flashed out of the garden, leaving Klaus alone. Klaus smiled satisfactorily as he stood alone in the garden. He turned around when he sensed someone standing behind him.

Hela tilted her head as she watched Klaus with amusement in her eyes. "Little brother, you're quite the devious little thing, aren't you?" Hela grinned conspiratorially which Klaus returned, his red lips turning up in a triumphant smirk.

"Why, thank you, sister," he said. He had already planned on breaking Tyler's sire bond. He was too connected to Elena and the Salvatores, who had become his enemies. And suggesting that he could never make Caroline happy while he was still sired would ingrain doubts about their relationship in his mind. It's not like he explicitly told Tyler to break up with Caroline. "You were right about the Hybrids."

"Of course I was," Hela replied, causing Klaus to roll his eyes.

He simply continued. "I had a meeting with the rest of them this morning. They were displeased they could not see their families and they felt used and enslaved rather than feel like they were in a pack. They made some suggestions to me to restructure the hybrids to resemble the wolfpacks they used to be a part of. I started by appointing one of the hybrids as a Beta." Had Tyler broken the sire bond on his own, it's likely that he would've tried to unsire all the hybrids. Klaus was able to get ahead of any plans for mutiny among the hybrids. If they had betrayed him, he would've killed all of them. It would be unproductive if he had to kill his hybrids and need to make new ones. Werewolves are already rare. If he tried to turn them all into hybrids, they'd go extinct.

"You unsired Tyler, but not the others."

"No," he replied. "I'm taking your advice and the hybrid's suggestions into account. Tyler hates me and will hate me even more now that I've poked at his insecurities about his relationship with Caroline. I can't have his destabilizing influence around the hybrids when I'm trying to foster their loyalty."

"Oh, please. You just want to be able to tell your love that you freed Tyler from your service as a show of benevolence," Hela said as she followed Klaus into the house.

Klaus turned to face his sister, a smirk still on his lips, "Well, there's that too."

"Did you send her an invitation to the ball?"

"Yes. With a dress."

"Hela." Finn entered the room. "Elijah is waiting in the car."

"Alright, I'm coming," Hela said as she followed Finn to the garage, where Elijah waited by the Cadillac SUV. When he saw her, he opened the passenger door for her. "Elijah, you must teach me to drive one of these vehicles. They're quite convenient."

Forbes House

"Please join the Mikaelson Family on October 29th at seven o'clock for dancing, cocktails, and celebrations. Save me a dance, Fondly, Klaus." It felt like she had been looking at the invitation and the dress forever because she couldn't believe it. Not only did he send her an invitation and ask for a dance, but he also sent her a dress. It was almost as if he was daring her to come to the party and wear the dress. There was also that diamond bracelet he gave her for her birthday.

She shook her head as she thought about Tyler, who was still sired to Klaus as his hybrid slave. She shouldn't be thinking about how beautiful the dress and the bracelet are or how the ball would be the biggest party in Mystic Falls. No. She had to think about Tyler. She closed the box with the dress and folded the envelope back with the invitation.

"Caroline."

She almost jumped as she whipped her head to look at Tyler, who stood at the threshold of her bedroom door. "Tyler? You're here." She smiled contentedly as she rushed to hug her boyfriend. "I missed you." Tyler wrapped his arm around Caroline's waist, nuzzling his face in the crook of her neck.

"I'm sorry I wasn't there for you when your father died, Care," Tyler said. "Klaus, he-"

"It's okay, Tyler. Everything's fine now that you're here," Caroline said. "I could care less about Klaus or what he wants."

As Tyler entered the room, he noticed the large box with the ribbon and the envelope on her bed. "What's that?"

"Oh, it's just an invitation. The Originals are throwing a ball," Caroline replied. "I was just about to put it away."

"Why the big box?" Tyler asked as he took the invitation. He opened the envelope to find the card with the invitation. His face hardened when he turned the card over and read the message from Klaus. "Klaus?" Tyler said as he looked at Caroline. "Klaus invited you? Why?"

"Tyler-"

Tyler didn't let Caroline finish as he threw the envelope and the card on the ground before opening the box with the gorgeous blue dress with a glittering rhinestone bodice and with a flowing tulle skirt. There was another box on top of the dress. Tyler's frown deepened when he saw the expensive diamond bracelet glinting in the sunlight. "He sent you a dress and a diamond bracelet."

"Actually, he gave me the bracelet for my birthday," Caroline replied sheepishly. "But it doesn't mean anything. I didn't wear it and I'm not going to wear that dress. I don't even think I'll be going to the stupid ball anyway. Even if I did go, I can buy my own dress and jewels."

"You don't really think you're the epic love of a girl like Caroline, do you? She's ambitious and bright and wants to see the beauties of the world. I can give her that. You're a Lockwood, a founding family. Everything you are is tied to this town. Small town boy, small-town life, it won't be enough for her." When Tyler remembered Klaus' words, he whirled on Caroline and pushed her against the wall. The house trembled to cause the items on the cabinet to fall on the floor.

"What's going on with you and Klaus?" he screamed.

"Nothing," Caroline replied as she grunted and tried to fight against Tyler's hybrid strength. "There's nothing between me and Klaus."

"He's sending you expensive dresses and jewelry and asking you to dance with him at the ball and you're saying there's nothing between you," Tyler said. He was in tears as he raged at her. Tyler never got control of his temper before or after he activated his werewolf curse. As a hybrid, with his heightened emotions, his temper became worse and his strength was difficult to control. "How could you? After he killed me and Elena and terrorized our friends. I was working my ass off, breaking every bone in my body dozens of times to break the sire bond for you. And you're flirting with the guy."

"Tyler, you're hurting me," Caroline said. "Let go-"

"Are you fucking him? Are you cheating on me with him?"

"No!" That was the last straw as Caroline's vampire face came forth. "Enough! I said let go!" She pushed Tyler away from her.

Tyler stumbled against the opposite wall with a loud thud. He looked up at Caroline who had tears glistening in her eyes. "I would never cheat on you. And not with Klaus of all people."

Tyler stood up. "There will come a time when Caroline will want to leave this town. Perhaps one day, it may be in a year, or even in a century, she'll come to me. She'll turn up at my door and let me show her what the world has to offer." Just looking at Caroline forced the thoughts back into his head. He could picture it. The day Caroline would leave him for Klaus. She was already one foot out the door. "I'm done. I'm breaking up with you. You can do whatever you want with Klaus. But you'll never be anything more than a whore he'll eventually throw away." He could see the hurt look that crossed Caroline's face, but he didn't care. He wanted her to hurt. "Don't come crawling back to me when that time comes because I won't be taking back his sloppy seconds." In a gush of wind, he left the house, leaving the door swinging open.

Caroline stood in the middle of the hallway in shock as she stared at the door. Tears flowed down her face before her knees gave out beneath her. She laid on the floor, sobbing as she called his name repeatedly. "Tyler? Tyler!"

Mystic Grill

"I can't believe this," Caroline cried as she wiped tears from her eyes. "He accused me of cheating and called me Klaus' whore. I would never do that, especially not with Klaus. Not after everything he's done." She raised her head to look up at Elena. "I never even wore that stupid bracelet and I wasn't even going to go to the stupid ball."

Elena held Caroline's hand, passing her thumb on the skin soothingly. "I'm sure he didn't mean it, Care."

"He said he was breaking up with me," Caroline said. "He broke up with me." She held her head in her hands as she pressed her nails into her scalp. "I don't get it. Where did it go wrong?"

Elena shrugged. "I don't know, Care. Maybe Klaus told him to break up with you like he told him to bite you on your birthday."

"Oh, please." Elena raised her head with a gasp when she heard Rebekah's voice. "My brother is not so desperate for a woman that he would force Tyler to break up with Caroline. He likes a challenge. It would be too easy." Rebekah leaned over the back of Caroline's chair as she smirked at Elena. "Careful, Caroline. It's all well and good till she stabs you in the back."

"What are you doing here? I know your sister's rules. No murdering the locals." Elena smiled as she raised an eyebrow at Rebekah.

"Get over yourself, Elena. It's not all about you."

Elena and Caroline watched as Rebekah went up to Matt and handed him an envelope identical to the ones they received.

"Oh my God, she's inviting him to the ball," Caroline said. She turned to Elena. "Why is she inviting him?"

"Probably to get this reaction from us." Elena watched with mouth agape as she watched Rebekah leave, almost hopping out the door. "It's all so weird. The Originals are throwing a ball. Like an actual ball."

"It's some twisted Cinderella fetish is what it is," Caroline said as she dried her tears. "Why do you think the Oldest Original want an audience with you?"

"I have no idea. But there's only one way to find out."

"I thought you told Damon and Stefan you weren't going."

"I did. Which is all the more reason I need a drama-free bodyguard."

"Well, I think a Salvatore would look a lot better in a tux. And by that I mean Stefan."

"Ugh. I can't deal with either of the Salvatores right now. Whatever Stefan feels, he's channeling it all against Klaus. And Damon... it's just not a good idea."

"Why? Because you two made out?"

Elena's eyes widened as she looked up at Caroline who shrugged, "Bonnie spilled the beans." Caroline focused on her conversation with Elena about the Salvatores. She just didn't want to focus on her problems with Tyler and her broken heart at the moment.

"I was gonna tell you." Yeah, right. Caroline was always the last to know anything. Whether it was about Bonnie's magic or the Salvatores being vampires. Or any plans they were making against Klaus. She was always the last to know everything. She was mostly left out of their planning unless they needed her to be a distraction for Klaus. Or maybe when they needed some extra muscle. There was so much distance between her and Elena.

"After everything with your dad-"

"Elena, when you and Matt kissed for the first time freshman year, you called me the second it happened. I don't hear about this until now? From somebody else?"

"I'm sorry." Elena shook her head. "It's just, I don't even know how I feel about it yet. All I do know is that it just used to be so much easier. So, are you coming or not?"

"When is the stupid dance? I just want to totally go to a party, drink expensive champagne, and dance the night away to forget about Tyler."

Later that afternoon

Richmond, VA

Hela observed her nails as she sat on the couch in the tailor shop as Finn and Elijah got fitted for their tuxedos for the ball. Even after centuries, watching her brothers getting fitted for clothing was always tedious and boring. When Elijah said he would take her shopping, she was hoping it would be for her new wardrobe as she had been sharing Rebekha's clothes.

She wanted to try on the wide variety of clothes that were available in the modern age. She should've waited for Rebekah. Or at least ask one of Niklaus' female hybrids to take her clothes shopping. "I'm bored." She laid her head back against the back of the couch. "This is taking too long. I thought clothes were manufactured now."

"Most clothes are, but high-quality clothes, like the tuxedos for the ball, are only available at high-end boutiques and will be fitted to the body by the tailor," Elijah explained.

Hela rolled her eyes as she said, "Whatever."

With all the planning for the ball and Hela's meticulous scheming, Elijah had forgotten that his sister could be just as bratty and spoiled as his younger siblings. Even when they were human, Hela had a sense of entitlement. Whatever she wanted, she would seek it out. Not even Mikael's wrath could stop her from doing as she wished. It was also for that reason that she became the only person who could stand up to their father.

Year 988 AD

Like always, when Esther was in recovery after giving birth she rested with the newborn babe at Ayana's home. The household responsibilities fell on the eldest daughter, Hela. She delegated chores to her younger siblings. The boys took care of the animals, gathered and cut wood, bring water from the river, and hunted, while Hela and Rebekah remained in the home, preparing meals, doing laundry, cleaning the house, and tending the garden. Rebekah was only four years old but she had quickly learned what was necessary for her to do as a woman.

Esther had only given birth to Henrik a few days before and it had been a difficult birth for her. Hela was 18. She was at the right age for marriage. As they sat down at the table, eating in silence, Mikael spoke up.

"Hela, the son of the blacksmith has asked me for permission to court you." The entire table stopped moving as the siblings looked between their father and their older sister. "Is there anything I should know about you and the blacksmith's boy?"

"Of course not, father. Nothing of impropriety had happened between me and the blacksmith's boy. Of course, we've met and spoken at times when I go to fetch the knives for the kitchen and at times during the feasts," Hela replied monotonously.

"Good," Mikael said. "I've given him permission to court you."

"I see. Then, I hope you will allow me to meet him tomorrow."

"Yes. You will soon wed. It is fine for you to acquaint yourselves."

"Thank you, father."

After dinner ended, Hela brought the dirty plates to the buckets of water outside the house. "What is it, Finn?" She didn't need to turn around as she sensed her brother following her when she left the house.

Finn walked up and sat beside his sister as she washed the wooden bowls. "That man, the smith's son, he is not a good man. I've heard rumors of him. He spends his days in the whorehouse outside the village. He's a spendthrift. He will not care for you," said Finn.

"I know," Hela replied.

Finn huffed, "I do not understand why father would make such a match for you."

"He no longer wants me under his care. Father has seven mouths to feed. I am of age. If I marry, I will be under the rule and care of my husband," Hela explained. She washed the ash and pig-fat mix out of the bowls and stacked them on the bench. She turned to her brother. "Do not worry, Finn. All will be well." She pulled her brother into a hug and placed a kiss on his temple.

The next afternoon, a knock came at the door of the hut. Rebekah got up and wiped her hand on her apron as she left to open the door. "Can I help you?" Hela heard her ask in her small voice.

Hela heard the gruff voice at the door. She left the dress she was sewing on the table and went to the door. "Rebekah, go back inside." Rebekah rushed back into the main room as Hela turned to face the portly man at the door. "Brun, I would appreciate it if you did not scare my sister."

The man huffed as his lecherous eyes roamed over her body. They remained at the door for quite a while before he finally found her eyes again. "Your father has told me to ask you out for a walk."

"I see. Wait for a moment. I must prepare." She closed the door and returned to the house. She sat at the table and continued her sewing. Thirty minutes later, Hela came out to find the man still waiting for her.

He stomped his feet as he yelled, "I've been standing here for half an hour, woman."

"My apologies," Hela replied. "I only wanted to take the time to make myself presentable for you."

He looked down her body again at the simple green dress she was wearing. "Whatever. So long as that's what you were doing."

Hela walked slightly behind the man, observing her surroundings paying little mind to the man's ramblings. Hela knew of most men in the village. She had known that her father would require her to marry when she came of age so she listened to all the gossip about the men in the village. All the good men were already married. The younger men who were of similar age were either too arrogant or too ignorant. They were selfish and weak. The strong men in the village saw Mikael as the model to emulate in order to prove themselves as strong. They had no respect for women. She did not want to marry men like her father. Men like Brun.

Hela would only marry a man she found to be honorable. No matter what Mikael said.

"When you become my wife, I expect you to be submissive. You will be responsible for everything happening in the house and you will pleasure me when I wish," Brun ordered.

She cocked her head. "I don't understand."

"Stupid woman," he whispered. "I take it you have laid with no man? That you are pure?"

"Yes. I've not been with any man." Not in this life, at least.

Brun placed his hands behind his back. "Good. I will have no man's sloppy seconds." He raised a hand up to touch her face, passing it along her jaw down to her neck. "I will teach your virgin body pleasure."

"I take it you're very experienced in the matter of the flesh between a man and a woman." She observed his hand closely as it trailed lower.

"Well, I've tasted many women before. All the girls in the pleasure house can attest that I am skilled at fucking."

Hela grasped his hand tightly before it reached her chest. She turned his wrist outward at an odd angle until she heard a snap.

"Ahh!" he screamed.

She smiled as she pinned his hand to his back and pushed his chest roughly against the tree. She brandished a dagger and held it close to his neck. "You bitch! What are you doing? Let go of me. I'll make you pay for this."

"Watch your mouth!" Hela slapped him with the back of her hand. "How dare you assume you can rule over me? Me." She kicked the back of his knees, forcing him to the ground. "As if you, a fat manwhore, could ever be good enough for me." She placed her foot on his groin and ground her heel into it as the man screamed. She stomped on his face, his chest, and his throat. She lowered his trousers and brought the dagger to his crotch and watched the horror on his face as she cut off his manhood. She smiled like the Goddess of Death she once was, smiling cruelly at the man. "Disgusting." She threw the organ far into the forest as she looked down at the man bleeding in front of her. "Well, now you've become a useless man, haven't you? You will tell my father you no longer wish to marry me. You're better off as a eunuch, don't you think?"

Hela left the crying man writhing on the ground as she walked over him to the river. She groaned as she looked at her hands covered in the disgusting pig's blood. She turned around and walked back to the village. She walked over Brun again. She stopped. "Well, Finn, Elijah, I expect what has happened here today to remain between us." She already knew that her brothers had followed her.

She turned around and smiled at her two brothers, who both had horrified expressions on their faces. They had seen everything. "Sister, we-" Elijah said.

"It's no problem, Elijah. That man was unworthy of me," Hela reasoned. "How could he possibly think he can have any authority over me? Now, both of you must be respectful to women. Do not emulate father's cruel actions. And when it comes to Rebekah, you must find an honorable man, who will treat her with love and kindness and respect before allowing her to marry. Do you understand?"

They both nodded. "Yes, Hela."

"Good." She placed a kiss on both their cheeks. "Now, let us return home. I must prepare dinner."

The next day, as Hela played a stone-throwing game with Rebekah and Kol, Mikael returned to the house. He screamed her name as he searched the house for her until he found her in the yard. "Hela!" The children jumped, but Hela simply calmed them as she stood up to face her father.

"Yes, father?"

"What have you done? Why has Brun, the smith's son, withdrawn his proposal."

"Oh, that. While we were speaking yesterday, Brun thought it would be best for him to become a eunuch. He discovered that marriage was not his calling," Hela replied as she hid Kol and Rebekah behind her skirt.

Mikael's eyes narrowed as he looked at his daughter. In many ways, she was very much like him. Which he found irritable because her attributes were not appropriate for a woman to possess. Although she did not have his quick temper, she was quite prideful and headstrong. She was the only one of his children that always openly defied him. Not even Finn or Elijah would dare keep their heads raised as she stared into his eyes in defiance.

"You, what did you do?"

"He was unworthy of me. He is a man lower than a pig and you expect me to lie on my back and allow him to mount me like some broodmare?" Hela said. "I castrated him."

Mikael's eyes widened in shock and rage. How dare Hela defy him? He pulled his leather belt from around his waist. "Untie your dress," he commanded. He only whipped her on her back and her legs. He couldn't allow scars on her face or the front of her body if he wanted to marry her off.

"Kol, take your sister inside." Kol looked at his older sister with tears in his eyes as he held tightly onto Rebekah. "Kol, do as I say."

She watched her brother enter the house and close the door behind him. She turned her back to Mikael and bent down on the ground. Snap! The leather belt bit into her back. She gritted her teeth and made no sound as her father beat her senselessly. She could feel the blood running down her back as he breathed heavily with every strike. Her bleeding wounds burned when the could wind touched her exposed back.

By the time Mikael finished, Hela was on her hands and knees, trying to keep herself upright. There were black spots in her vision but she shook her head. She could bear the pain. She would bear the pain. She refused to faint. She remained in her crouching position on the ground until Mikael left in a huff. She held her dress to her chest as she stood up on shaky legs. "Father." Mikael stopped at the sound of her voice. "I suggest you find an honorable and respectable man to court me. You should in fact look at yourself and decide on a man you find to be your opposite. Or else, I fear the people in the village will believe that the Mikaelson family is cursed when the eldest daughter's suitors all end up dead. It would be a shame, wouldn't it?"

Hela entered the house, her body trembling as she searched the storage shelves for healing herbs. "Kol," she called. The stairs creaked as several sets of footsteps came down from the sleeping loft. She turned around to find her younger brothers looking at her with eyes of pity and sadness and fear. "Finn, help Kol prepare the healing salve." She walked up to them and placed a kiss on each of their cheeks. "I'm fine," she told them. "Everything is fine." As she took a step on the stairs, her legs buckled under her. She was quickly caught by Elijah who helped her up the stairs to the loft. He laid her down on her cot, beside Rebekah, who laid asleep.

"Niklaus, fetch water."

Hela sighed as she passed her knuckle lightly on her sister's face, which was marred with tear tracks. She laid on her belly as her brothers crowded around her. Niklaus brought warm water, Elijah brought clean cloth, and Finn and Kol brought the herbal salve. Elijah dipped the cloth in the water and lightly wiped the blood from his sister's back. Finn applied the salve over her wounds, spreading them over completely to make sure no scars were left. Hela faced the wall as Finn wrapped the bandages around her back and torso. They were used to cleaning each other's wounds after Mikael beat them. Every time, all the siblings crowded around each other in silent comfort.

Hela held her hand out to Kol, who placed his small hand in hers. "Do you remember the incantation?"

Kol nodded. "Yes." With one hand over her back and his other hand channeling her, Kol and Hela repeated the incantation for the spell. They remained together on the small cot for the rest of the night, the brothers watching over their sisters as they slept. Mikael did not return that night.

The next day, the brothers took on Hela's chores as she rested. Rebekah brought her food and later in the afternoon, the brothers came to her again to change the bandages before Kol applied the recovery spell once more.

The next year, Mikael chose another suitor for Hela, who had turned 19. The man disappeared without a trace.

When she was 20, her suitor left the village.

At 21, her suitor was eaten by the wolves.

Another drowned in the river.

Another fell off a cliff and died.

"I am only keeping my word, father," she told Mikael.

Hela chose a widowed foreign dark-skinned man with three daughters as her husband. He was a warlock and ten years older than her but she was happy in her marriage and she fell in love with her husband and step-children. Hela made sure she never had any children of her own. She would not allow what happened to Freya to happen to her child.

Caroline huffed as she walked out of the store. It was the third dress shop she had been to but she still couldn't find a dress. She was going to the ball, but she was not going to wear the dress that Klaus got her. It was a gorgeous dress and it fit her perfectly. It would look great on her with the bracelet. No. She wasn't going to wear the dress that caused Tyler to break up with her.

But no matter how hard she looked, she couldn't find a dress that matched Klaus' dress.

As Caroline rounded the corner, she bumped into someone, causing her to drop her purse and everything in it. She was a vampire. Even if she's young by vampire standards, her reflexes and speed should have helped her avoid ploughing into a person. Caroline looked up to make sure the person she had run into wasn't thrown to the other side of the room. Black heeled boots, long legs in black leather pants, a silk V-neck tank tucked into the high waist of the pants, and a heavy leather jacket hanging loosely on her body. Several necklaces fell down her cleavage, adorning her long neck. Caroline couldn't help as her mouth dropped agape as the beautiful woman smiled at her. She raised the sunglasses over her eyes as she held her hand out to Caroline, who was still crouching on the floor.

Caroline took the hand and slowly stood up.

The woman said, "My apologies. I'm not familiar with this place. Are you alright?"

"Yeah," Caroline said as she stared into the woman's bright blue eyes that reminded her of a certain blond hybrid. "I'm fine, thanks." She should've been able to sense someone coming toward her and avoided the person Unless that person was a vampire. "Uh, I'm gonna go." Caroline gathered her belongings and walked around the woman, leaving her in the middle of the mall.

When Caroline came back around an hour later, her eyes caught the sight of the blonde wandering around the halls, looking into the many glass displays. She raised her hand to someone and asked the stranger, "Can you help me? I need-"

"Sorry, I'm busy. I gotta go home." The woman quickly pulled away from the gorgeous blonde and left. Caroline watched as the blonde beauty passed her hand through her hair as she bit her lip in contemplation. She was looking for something and Caroline, the kind person that she was, couldn't avoid her.

"Excuse me," Caroline said as she approached the woman.

The woman's eyes lit up when she saw Caroline. "Oh, hello."

"Do you need help?"

"Oh, it's been two hundred years since I've been in the world. I have some difficulty finding clothes for my wardrobe."

Caroline's mouth opened in shock as she frantically looked around them to find if anyone heard them. "Oh, no need to worry. There's no one around to eavesdrop."

Caroline opened her mouth and leaned in close to whisper, "You can't just say that type of stuff out loud... and how did you know, about me?"

The woman simply smiled. "Oh sweetheart, I can recognize a vampire a mile away."

Caroline just shook her head. "Okay, what do you need help with?"

"I need new clothes. My brother gave me this card," she said as she held up the platinum card. Caroline shook her head. She was getting too many shocks in one afternoon. "I don't know what stores are reputable or not."

"Okay. I'll help you."

"Thank you," the woman smiled at her softly. "You are very kind."

"So you should go into a high-end department store first. See what you like, what looks good on you. I'm guessing you like brand-name clothes, with high-quality fabrics and manufacturing."

The older blonde shook her head. "I'm sorry, love. I do not understand a word you said."

"Okay," Caroline said. She stopped in front of the Macy's. "Let's go in here first. I'm Caroline, by the way."

Caroline extended her hand to the older vampire who took it and shook. "Hela."

Klaus became more diplomatic and thoughtful in TO. With Hela's return, she's influencing him to rethink his approach to leading his hybrids and courting Caroline much earlier now.

It's so totally Hela's fault Rebekah could never keep a boyfriend. She taught her brothers it was okay to kill and mutilate men they found unworthy of Rebekah.
