Disclaimer: I do not own Percy Jackson. All of the glory goes to Rick Riordan.
Annabeth woke up in a cold sweat. She was scared. She had a dream about spiders suffocating her. Her rational mind knew that it wasn't real, but she was scared anyway.
She tried to go back to sleep, rustling around in her bed, when Annabeth heard the sound of her window opening, and she dove under the covers. She pulled them down around her, but something crawled in. A spider. Annabeth stifled a scream. She was scared. No, terrified, of spiders. She felt more crawling over her, biting and weaving webs. She tried to shake them off, but they just kept coming back. She could barely think. She bit her lip to keep from screaming. If she screamed, her stepmother would come in and whisper-yell at her. More kept coming. The bites got worse and worse. The cobwebs were covering her nose and mouth. Annabeth shook under her covers. More spiders crawled in. Annabeth hated the creepy-crawly creatures. She started to cry. Annabeth couldn't breath. She tore away the webs covering her mouth, but the spiders wove their webs just as quickly as she tore them away. They were all over her body now. Biting, scratching, weaving. How was this happening? Annabeth was terrified of spiders. She was arachnophobic! It seemed like something happened and all of the spiders within a one mile radius came to her. What was her appeal?
Annabeth couldn't bear it anymore. She screamed, long and loud. "Daddy! Help me! The spiders are eating me!" Now technically that wasn't true, but Annabeth thought that a little over exaggeration never hurt anyone. She wanted her dad. But she knew that if anyone came in, it would be her stepmother. She didn't care if she woke the twins, her stepbrothers up, but she knew that her stepmother would. Even if she did wake up her dad, her stepmother would come in anyway. The spiders scuttled away, leaving bites in their wake. Her stepmother came in, and she was mad.
"Annabeth Chase!" her stepmother screamed. "What are you thinking? You will wake up the whole house with this nonsense!"
Annabeth started to cry harder. "I'm sorry stepmother, but there were spiders all over me, and I was scared. I tried not to scream, I really did! See, the spiders bit me! And they even wove webs on me! I couldn't breath! I had to keep taking them off my mouth, but more just kept weaving their webs! See?"
But when Annabeth looked down at herself, there was nothing but a few spider webs splayed across her. The bites vanished within seconds. She started searching herself, trying to prove that she's right, but Helen wouldn't take it.
"Annabeth, you are lying. I don't know how you got these cobwebs, but your brothers are asleep, and it should stay that way. Now, if you scream one more time, you will not get off so easily. If you wake your father or brothers up, there will be MAJOR repercussions. Do you understand me?"
"Yes, but-"
"No buts with me little girl. Now, if I had my way, you would be off to a boarding school before you could blink. But your father said that he needed you to be close to him, and I have no idea why. Maybe it has something to do with your mother. Now, did you ever meet your mother? No. Because she left you with your father and never looked back. She is the reason that you are like you are. And remember, do NOT say anything to your father in the morning, this will be our little secret. Do you understand?"
"Yes, stepmother. I understand." whispered Annabeth.
She crawled back under her covers. Helen turned off the lights, and left the room. Annabeth started to think. How did all of the spiders find her? She was only seven, and she tried to be as good as she could, given the circumstances that she was in. She didn't know how her father loved Helen. She was so mean to Annabeth! But that was mostly behind closed doors. The only thing that was out in the open is when she didn't let Annabeth play with her stepbrothers. What did she do wrong? Was she abnormal? And why didn't she have a mom? A real mom. Her stepmother hated her, and her father always sided with Helen. Her stepmother wouldn't even let her play with her stepbrothers. She was too 'abnormal'. She made up her mind that she would ask her dad where her mom was tomorrow, if she could get him away from her stepmother and the twins. Annabeth quietly whispered, "Mommy, if you are out there, please, please help me. Nobody likes me and spiders keep crawling all over me." Annabeth's eyes slowly closed, and she cried herself to sleep.
Athena looked down from Mount Olympus. She heard the prayer of a little girl named Annabeth, and decided to investigate. Athena knew that Annabeth was special. Annabeth prayed to her mother for help, but Athena couldn't send her any signs. Was Annabeth her daughter? Athena thought so. She remembered Frederick. Frederick Chase was a good man, a smart man, but then he went and married that woman. What he saw in her, Athena had no idea. And she was the wisdom goddess! Frederick had wanted a demigod free life, and this woman was as mortal as you could get. He even tried to make Athena raise Annabeth on Mount Olympus! The cheek. Everyone knew that heroes had to be raised by their mortal parent. Annabeth had a strong aura, and once she became more independent, she would start attracting monsters like crazy. Oh well, once she got to Camp Half-Blood, she would learn all of the things she needed to learn. And then Athena would be able to claim her. No direct help, of course. But a magic item perhaps…

I hope that you liked this chapter. ALSO, thank you to my amazing beta readingbooksforlife, who made this chapter 100x better.
