Chapter 7
Kate made sure she had everything arranged on the tray just the way she wanted it. After such a long flight back home and everything that happened in Moscow, they were both tired, but Lucy was exhausted. Even though they were able to sleep on the plane, she fell right back to sleep the moment her head hit the pillow at Kate's place. Kate, on the other hand, was used to the routine of long flights, even longer missions, and early morning starts and wanted to make Lucy the perfect breakfast. Once she was satisfied that she had everything she needed, she picked up the tray and quietly headed back into the bedroom. She couldn't help but to smile at Lucy's sleeping form. Seeing her in bed wearing yet another one of Kate's shirts made Kate's heart swell even more with love and adoration. She placed the tray on the nightstand and crawled back into bed to wake her girlfriend. Lucy let out a small moan as Kate spooned her from behind and placed sweet kisses on her shoulder.
"Morning," whispered Kate, but Lucy groaned.
"No." Kate giggled at her response.
"Lucy, wake up," Kate teasingly sang.
"No, you come back to bed," said Lucy as she pulled Kate's arm closer to snuggle it.
"We have to go to work."
"Why, I just did work," whined Lucy and Kate shook with mirth.
"It's Tuesday," reminded Kate as Lucy pushed her bottom lip out in a pout. She opened one eyelid to peek out at the sunlight peering from the curtains and turned in Kate's arms to bury her face in her girlfriend's neck.
"No, I just closed my eyes. It was just dark a minute ago."
"It's almost ten in the morning. I told Jane we were going to be in pretty late. She actually wished me luck getting you to come in today at all." Lucy frowned in confusion.
"Why is Tennant even there? We just got back from Russia…Russia, Kate."
"I'm aware," she giggled.
"We technically did our country a very big solid, so I think we can have the day off, hell, the week off."
"Well, technically, we stopped one of our own from betraying one of our own and did a lot of illegal things to do so."
"I'm now firmly on the 'Carlos was Coerced' train. That wasn't his fault. It was Russian interference and we should at the very least get the day off for that…and maybe a thank you muffin. I like muffins."
"It's a thankless job, Luce. Sorry, but no muffins."
"You wouldn't buy me a muffin," she pouted and Kate kissed her cheek.
"Oh, I will buy you as many muffins as you want. They just won't come from the State Department or DOD or any intelligence agency, for that matter. As far as they are concerned, it's just business as usual. My boss, however, was kind enough to give me some time off, if I want it. I was betrayed by a DIA officer, who just so happened to be one of my friends. I don't necessarily want to be in the office much today as news about Carlos comes out, but Deena has already called me twice."
"Wait, how long have you been up?"
"Since eight, I slept in."
"What is wrong with you and Tennant? We just got home," she reiterated and Kate giggled.
"Sleep is a luxury in the work we used to do."
"Well, yet another reason I could never been an operative. All I want to do is curl up in bed with my gorgeous, very sexy girlfriend all day."
"Counter offer…"
"Here we go," whined Lucy.
"We eat this delicious breakfast I made us on the balcony, get some sunshine to help wake you up, and then head in for a half day."
"Counter offer, we have mind-blowing sex…"
"I'm listening."
"You feed me in bed and we don't go into work at all…all week." Kate rolled on top of her and smiled adoringly.
"Don't you want to see Kai and Jesse and tell them all about your big undercover op?"
"I could take or leave them at the moment."
"Lucy," laughed Kate.
"I'm tired," whined Lucy.
"Okay, how about this? Breakfast in bed. Sex in the shower to wake you up…"
"Now we're getting somewhere."
"And we go in for a few hours, just so I can finish up some paperwork and you can catch up on things in the office," bargained Kate. Lucy opened one eye to look up at her and glanced back to see the tray of food.
"You even included my favorite muffin." Kate beamed with pride and rested her chin on Lucy's shoulder.
"And pancakes, I know how to tempt my girlfriend."
"Carbs, it will always be carbs. Well, and sex," giggled Lucy.
"Definitely sex," whispered Kate as she pulled Lucy back to her and gave her a sweet kiss. She giggled when Lucy crawled on top off her and took off her shirt.
"Carbs can wait," she assured and Kate happily nodded, more than willing to get lost in exploring her girlfriend.
An hour later, they sat on the balcony dressed and finishing up breakfast. Lucy scooted over into Kate's lap and peppered kisses on her neck, causing Kate's head to loll back. She started unbuttoning Kate's blouse and her girlfriend smirked.
"No, not again, we agreed," reminded Kate as she laughed.
"You agreed. I changed my mind."
"You know, when Jane told me it was going to be a struggle to get you out of the house, I thought she was exaggerating."
"I don't like you two being friends. It works against me." Kate grabbed her phone.
"I'm telling her you said that."
"No," laughed Lucy as she grabbed the phone and tossed it back on the table.
"I'm kind of surprised she hasn't called me, though," admitted Lucy and Kate smiled sympathetically at her.
"To be clear, we're both aware of what I just put you through. It's a lot to process." Lucy cupped her cheek.
"You didn't put me through anything. I chose to go and I would choose it all over again. Kate, you aren't responsible for everyone else. I love that your first instinct is to help. It's one of my favorite things about you, but you didn't put any of us through this. If anything, I blame Cara. Yeah, I actually like that. This is all Cara's fault," announced Lucy.
"I suppose I can see that from your perspective."
"Oh and tell her I haven't forgotten about that kiss. She's alive and well now. There will be words."
"I still can't believe she did that. Honestly, I didn't see it coming."
"I did and I'm surprised I only had to worry about one woman trying to kiss you since you apparently have so many ridiculously sexy women who you now owe favors to."
"You find some of them ridiculously sexy, which ones, now I'm curious?"
"No deflecting, Whistler."
"And now I'm back to being Whistler, great."
"You could take me back to bed and I'll have no problem calling you Kate…over…and over," teased Lucy as she placed kisses on her neck again. Kate let out a whine.
"You don't play fair."
"I finally have you all to myself. Why would I play fair?"
"Okay, how about this? We go in for a few hours, catch up on things, come home, order takeout, and I promise you can have me all to yourself tonight."
"And I get to take you away this weekend," added Lucy and Kate smiled at the words.
"You want to go somewhere?"
"Yep, not far, but I already have a place in mind. I finally have you and I want to show you how much you mean to me…in a less, 'I'd put my life on the line for you any day' kind of way." Kate tenderly kissed her and leaned her forehead against hers.
"I'd love that, Luce."
"Good, then we have a deal," said Lucy as she stood up.
"Really, no catch? You're ready to go into work as long as we have a quiet night in and go somewhere this weekend," asked Kate as she followed her back inside.
"Yep, let's go. Oh, by the way, I'm planning the whole weekend, you don't get to know the details until we arrive, and can't pay for any of it. I'm sure that Whistler Type A brain can handle that, right?"
"Wait…"
"Let's go, work awaits, chop, chop," announced Lucy as she hurried to the door.
"I knew there was a catch," grumbled Kate as she followed her girlfriend out of the apartment.
Jane did a double take when she looked up from the paperwork she was working on and saw Lucy and Kate strolling in through the double doors of the bullpen. She looked down at her watch and cursed under her breath as she stood up to head their way. Jesse and Kai were already greeting Lucy with hugs and Jane rolled her eyes at Kate's smug smile.
"Barely," said Jane and Kate shrugged.
"And yet, I still did," said Kate. Jane pulled a twenty dollar bill from her pocket and handed it to Kate.
"Always a pleasure," teased Kate and Lucy eyed them suspiciously.
"Wait, what's happening here? Why does Kate look smug and why do you look oddly impressed," asked Lucy.
"It's nothing, we just had a friendly wager about if you would show up today," informed Jane.
"She assumed because of the long flight and everything that happened, you wouldn't be able to make it to work…"
"Or if you did, it would be much later," added Jane.
"And I assured her that you are a professional and even though you didn't get much sleep, you would be in by noon and I was right."
"You were persuasive. There's a difference."
"There weren't rules," reminded Kate as the two of them playfully bickered. Lucy's jaw dropped and Kai pulled Jesse in front of him to hide as they watched the two women.
"Okay, that's not okay. What the hell happened on that mission," whispered Kai. Lucy ignored him and stomped her foot to get Kate and Jane's attention.
"No, this isn't allowed. You two don't get to be friends. You get to be like, you know, work colleagues, maybe even work family, but not friends," exclaimed Lucy.
"And why is that," asked Jane.
"Because, you know…you're…and she's…You don't get to tease and be fun together. That has to be some sort of HR violation. My boss and my girlfriend can't be friends."
"Whoa, girlfriend, you two weren't even together on Friday," said Kai and Jesse nudged him.
"I told you when they were making out at the club, it was a done deal," reminded Jesse.
"But I thought they were just casually hooking up again," said Kai and Kate cleared her throat.
"And with that, I'm going to go. I have work to do and probably more than a few questions to answer," said Kate before pulling Lucy over to her with a smile. Jesse and Kai watched them in stunned silence as Kate gave Lucy a quick peck on the lips and a wink.
"See you in a bit," said Kate.
"I want Chinese for dinner. You can use the money Tennant gave you. It's dirty anyways," called Lucy. Kate laughed as she left.
"Seriously, what happened," exclaimed Kai and Jane clapped Lucy on the back.
"I have paperwork to finish, so I'll let you fill them in. Oh, and be sure to check in with Ernie. He's in a very hugging mood today," said Jane before heading back to her office. Lucy smiled smugly as she placed her bag on her desk and sat down. Kai and Jesse grabbed their chairs and dragged them over to her desk to eagerly sit down.
"What happened? Where have you been," asked Kai.
"And since when are Tennant and Whistler close," asked Jesse.
"And since when are you and Whistler girlfriends," added Kai.
"Well, boys, a lot has happened since we saw you on Friday. I mean, a whole lot, like more than you could ever imagine. I've done things. I've seen things. I've been things."
"Start talking," said Jesse and Lucy looked around as she thought about where to start.
"Actually, let's talk in the war room. Half of what I'm about to say is classified and the other half is illegal."
"I'm sorry, what," asked Kai as she hopped up and headed up the stairs with them right on her tail. Kate already assured her she was allowed to tell them what happened and she couldn't wait. When she agreed to their group date, she had no clue it would lead to so many changes for them and so quickly, but she couldn't be happier and couldn't wait to be back in her girlfriend's arms.
AN: And there you have it! I hope you enjoyed. What did you think? If it isn't clear, I love Kate and Jane as friends. They would be friendship goals if the writers ever let it be canon on the show. Also, I really tried to embrace wrapping up with some cute Kacy moments. After all that drama, I wanted to have some fluff and DomesticKacy. I'm thinking about writing a cute one-shot about their weekend trip, but we will see.
