The lying started immediately.
One of Sakura's old trainee friends messaged her jokingly asking for Sasuke's number, leading Sakura to the miserable realization that she didn't even have it. She joked back and said it was a secret. Not that she would contact him if she did have his number.
Life was made marginally easier because at least her members knew the truth. They held her hand tightly as they navigated through a sea of photographers and they stopped letting her be the one to read through comments while livestreaming. It helped a little.
The company's strategic scheduling also started immediately.
So much for not having to do anything extra.
In the words of her fans: Sakura was booked and busy. But that also meant she was exhausted. In between having extra schedules and preparing for the group's comeback, she barely had a moment to herself. As she crawled into bed each night, she found it ridiculous that anyone would think she had the time to date.
She didn't even care if she was trending anymore because Sasuke's name would be right there with hers. So much for being known for hard work — being known for dating someone more popular didn't feel like an accomplishment at all.
Naively, Sakura thought that maybe, just maybe, the news would blow over and be replaced by something more interesting. But no, netizens cradled her career in their sweaty palms and they decided they still wanted to discuss her and this so-called relationship.
Her teaser photo was released and sure, it got more likes than ever before but the comments weren't worth it. Before, she'd be happy to be trending. Now, she hoped her members could handle all of the spotlight. The thought of appearing before others was starting to make her feel slightly ill.
Sasuke scowled down at his phone. She was bearing the brunt of the hate. This almost always happened and clearly, their useless company didn't do anything to prevent it. It was a bad set up. He was certain their own fans could manage better than this.
But he couldn't speak up or else the situation would turn even more sour.
He streamed her newly released music video before climbing into bed. After all, numbers were everything.
Overlapping promotions with artists from the same company was never a good idea; resources were never plentiful enough and it took attention away from both. Hiruzen knew this, which is why he thought it quite brilliant to give the greenlight for Sasuke's solo debut two weeks into Sakura's group promotions. No overlap!
"You're kidding me," Sasuke deadpanned.
Hiruzen stroked his beard thoughtfully, "We've been waiting for the right time, and I think that time is now! It's perfect, really."
Sasuke pinched his nose bridge. He had the songs ready, of course. He knew what the concept would be. But to announce it right now? When Sakura's group was wading through the trenches of promotions? No. Just no.
"We should delay it."
"That won't be possible. With all the tricky logistics of production, it's just not that easy, you know that," he said in a way that could be seen as fatherly but only came off condescendingly.
Sasuke was not in the mood to argue. This was his life as an idol under this shitty company. "Fine. Schedule everything and make the announcements." He wasn't about to sabotage such an important step in his career just because of less than ideal timing. He would make it work.
Sasuke fumed as he left the office, not noticing that Sakura was just passing by until he nearly knocked her over.
"Hi."
He inclined his head in greeting. "My solo debut is soon."
She clasped her hands in front of her chest and smiled at him. "Oh, congratulations. It's well-deserved."
They stood together in the hallway blinking at each other for a few more moments of loaded silence. "You should go back to practicing," he said with a slight bow when he noticed how Sakura's smile had dropped. His words held just the slightest bit of warmth to them, only evident if you were listening very hard.
