Chapter 1: The Watcher Moves
Story Start.
In the beginning, there was only the Primordial Mind in this universe, for there are countless others made and unmade beyond the realms of time and space. Yet in this universe, that same mind sprang the whole of creation.
The stars, the planets, life and death.
There was one, a being from another place and another time, who was sent upon by the Eternal Emperor-beyond-the-Sea, to watch it all in his stead, to act when he deems it appropriate, and he consented the charge.
He watched when the Primordial Mind was divided against itself, the great schism as the Elder Titan called it.
Two greater fragments, Ancients, Radinthul and Diruulth, the Radiant and the Dire, thought and action, a reflection of him who watches from afar, but this reflection made form warred over creation with irreconcilable ferocity, unlike his own self: thought and action fused in perfect Unity.
This eternal dance between the two overshadowed the unsung fragment, the third Ancient, whom the Watcher called forth; what happened then was unknown to most, but it ended with the Chaos of the Infinite.
When this followed, he watched as kings, queens, gods, and monsters sought the shattered remnants of that shattered mind; still, he lived among the denizens of the planes, committed some things here and there; some were significant, some were not.
Seven Planes and Seven Hells, just like how he liked it.
He watched over them all and shall watch over them all, until that inevitable moment when he shall see to it that which is divided returns to Unity.
-Icewrack-
"…"
Cold winds from the north blew across the Blueheart Glacier and from the mountains whence it came; the dark clouds and snow blanket over the land, and there, a lone man stood silent, as if on a vigil.
"A copper for your thoughts?" a shadow towered behind him, in the form of a dragon, a woman's voice came from it, and the man remained silent for a moment.
"Auroth, dear… the world is changing, I can feel it in the wind, I can smell it in air," the man said, and the dragon hummed to herself, and a bright light covered her, which then formed a figure smaller than him, a beautiful woman.
"The world is always changing," her voice carried over the wind, and her breath felt like winter's chill as she continued, "you know that yourself, and from my ruminations if I wasn't being interrupted by Rylai."
"… hahahaha, you and Rylai should be the best of friends, yet at times you both antagonise one another when you both think I'm not watching," he said as he turned to the dragon woman behind him, his cold eyes matched with hers.
"I am always watching, Auroth. I've nothing better to do, maybe listen to your poems, and throw snowballs on Rylai's face."
It was now the dragon's turn to laugh, and she was genuinely amused at this banter, perhaps another addition in the story that she has been writing for a long time since they first met when she was, as she joked in Rylai's expense, a "maidenwurm".
"Soon, the Ancients will battle again," she heard him speak, and her eyes focused over the horizons of Icewrack, towards the south. "But first…"
Auroth immediately turned towards him once more, but he only turned away, back towards their lair, where perhaps, she may find an answer, if Rylai doesn't get it first, the "ice bitch" as Auroth refers to her at times is a mad one, very clever, but mad.
Madwoman, but a lovely one, countered Naruto because to him, Rylai Crestfall is a lovely madwoman, known to most as the Warden of Icewrack and Crystal Maiden, and one of the many players in the battles to come.
"I figured you two were out there," said a golden-haired woman with crystalline mantle and cape, and she sat in a chair with a book from Auroth's collection.
Auroth returned to her dragon form, the Winter Wyvern, and promptly laid herself down on the cold ground. Rylai rolled her eyes before she smirked towards the dragon, who merely turned her head away, and Naruto just laughed it out loud and went to get some food for himself.
"Your clone cooked it before he went away somewhere, down south, probably procrastinating," quipped Rylai while Naruto just dug in quietly.
"Well, probably to fix the mess you usually do in the village below," returned Naruto, and a snort came from the dragon, and the Warden sent a glare towards the dragon, who promptly ignored it.
Time passed, Naruto cleaned the dishes because Rylai couldn't tend to save herself while Auroth napped afterwards, or as she called it, rumination. Rylai called it an excuse not to do anything, while Naruto called it "AuroNap", which the dragon did not like.
"… so, wanna play in the snow?" Rylai asked, and her answer came from a barrelling snowball to her face.
"Now you've done it, mister!"
Naruto ran away, and Rylai, of course, gave chase.
Auroth's steward, the older man Thrael, just sighed as he thought of the mess to follow the two golden-haired idiots were done with their childish game. While Auroth herself continued her rumination and let the runt and the man-child do their daily ritual of nonsense, unless they pull her in later, as usual.
Her earlier questions to Naruto, now long forgotten.
Far away from the "fun" in Icewrack, the said clone mentioned by Rylai found himself outside a village, where armed men fought an earth dragon, a dangerous and hungry one, and they are losing badly.
Another armoured man, a dragon knight from what the clone gathered, and his squire went towards the other soldiers to watch the man work.
"Young, bold, and stupid…" remarked Naruto as he watched the dragon dive into the earth and move through the ground rather quickly and effortless.
Naruto watched as the squire tossed a coil of barbed wire with a hook towards the dragon knight, who then attached it to the dragon and laced it up around it as he jumped and dodged all the attacks.
"Why he isn't killing it?" he overheard from the captain, to which the squire replied almost immediately.
"Shut up and watch the man work."
Soon enough, the dragon dived back into the ground, the coil unwinded, but the dragon did not come out. Naruto narrowed his eyes as he expanded his senses.
"That little dragon is mad," muttered a voice in his head.
"Yeah, Kurama, something or someone caused that."
The old fox inside him closed his eyes, not to slumber but to meditate on the gathering storm. All this occurred as the dragon knight preceded to jump inside the hole, find the dragon, and kill it, though this was stupid.
"The little dragon knight is going to discover a discovery of a lifetime," stated Kurama while Naruto finally approached the men that watched from a safe distance.
"You there, squire of Dragon Hold, have you noticed something wrong with that dragon?" The young man nearly jumped in surprise as he did not notice him approach the group.
"Ah, eh, who are you?" fumbled the squire, while the rest of the group looked at him strangely, perhaps because of his appearance, cloaked in brown and not a weapon in sight.
"No one important, just a watcher of things," replied Naruto as he turned towards the hole where the dragon and the dragon knight went.
"Well, watcher," started the captain, "you should be not here; it's dangerous."
Naruto remained silent as the ground shook again, then said, "hmm, your dragon knight killed the dragon."
"How do you know that?" the squire asked while Naruto shrugged.
"Trade secret," he replied before he disappeared in a burst of speed, which shocked everyone, and went towards the hole to find the dragon knight.
-Helio Imperium-
In another place, far from the dragon hunt, a different clone sat upon a cliff that overlooked a walled city in the distance. But all fell beneath the rule of the sun, which gave its light to all.
"… empires rise, empires fall, except one," he muttered as he closed his eyes for meditation.
"What is it? I'm busy," the gruff voice of Kurama boomed within his mind
"Busy with what? Ruminating like Auroth?" sarcastically replied the Watcher.
"For the record, yes, this clone I'm with found an Eldwurm, the Earth Eldwurm, Uldorak," Kurama replied in an 'as-a-matter-of-fact' tone, which stopped the clone with his present line of thought.
This clone was silenced and opened his eyes. "Well, that's a surprise; we should tell the boss."
"Forget it; the original is having fun in Icewrack with Rylai. We'll tell him later, go to Lina already; you're lazing around again," stated the old tailed beast while this clone sighed in exasperation.
"That woman is as mad as her sister sometimes; why do I stick with the crazies?" He asked no one in particular, but Kurama still intended to answer, to get another chance to hurl an insult or two against the old Watcher.
"Because you're an idiot and just as crazy as they are? Now piss off. I've got work to do, unlike you."
The voice vanished from his head before he even uttered a reply. "Ouch."
A/N: Well, here we are. I've always wanted to write a fanfic in this world. I just never found the right setting until Dota: Dragon's Blood came on Netflix, that is, and that show, especially Season 2, well, 4.5/10, maybe.
