AN: Hey guys! This short lil fluffy oneshot just popped into my head at like 3am, don't ask me why lol. This doesn't relate to any of the Chipmunk movies, and in this setting, they're humans in their late teens. Enjoy ;)

P.S. I plan on finishing some of my older stories soon! *cookies to everyone that sticks around and leaves nice reviews hehe*

He walked elegantly down the aisle into the crowded room, and as his gentle golden eyes swept across the sea of people, they locked with her soft blue ones, both hearts skipping a beat at the eye contact.

As he carefully made his way past where she was sitting, she became more nervous with each step he took. Her hands were cold, and she could feel her heart pounding in her ears. She had no idea if he felt the same way, and she had a slight sense of envy that he probably couldn't even imagine the smallest amount of anxiety that she was feeling in that moment.

She was wrong. He became equally, if not even more nervous than she was the second their eyes met, but he'd never tell her that. Not until much, much later, at least. Upon walking into the award ceremony, it was on instinct that he looked for her. He knew she would be there, but he almost didn't want her to be. His intrusive mind was screaming at him to turn the other way and run the closer he got to her. As their eyes met, his chest tightened. She was so beautiful.

Surrounded by her best friends who were cheering and clapping with the rest of the crowd as he walked in, she tried to relax and enjoy their company…until he did exactly what she was praying he wouldn't do. He smiled at her. Her heart started to pound harder and faster than it was before, and she could feel her face burning, but she couldn't help but to smile back at him.

She looked down and away quickly. She had an image to maintain in front of her peers, but that effort was failing. Miserably, in fact, and she knew it. One of her friends sitting next to her noticed, gently nudged her arm, and smirked at her. She rolled her eyes and took a deep shaky breath in an attempt to calm herself as she watched him walk up the stage and begin giving his award speech.

As hard as she tried to listen, she didn't hear a single word he said. All she could do was stare at him, watching every muscle move, every blink, the curves of his lips, the veins in his hands and forearms, the shape of his jawline as he spoke…it was difficult for her to focus on anything other than him. He was perfect.

His father and brothers stood behind him as he recited the last of the speech, and as the crowd rose to their feet and applauded, all he could think about was her. Everything became a blur in that moment, and as he smiled and returned to his seat on the stage with his family, he felt happy for the first time in a long time, and his mind was unsure of what to do with that emotion. He'd been through a lot from his childhood up until now, and he had almost forgotten what that feeling of genuine contentment was like.

Deep down, he knew the smile on his face was because of her. He wasn't one to show his true emotions around anyone really, but she knew that. She understood him like no one else ever had, and that was unfamiliar to him. He loved it though, all the attention she gave him. He could talk about anything with her, and she could do the same with him. They had known each other since their young years, but the mutual feelings between them both hadn't become as strong until now.

As she watched him sit down, she bit her lip and prepared herself to make eye contact with him again. She knew he was going to look over at her, and this time, she'd be ready. Except she wasn't. Their eyes met again for only a brief moment before both quickly looked away.

Why am I so nervous?

They were best friends. They would stay up and talk and laugh until 3 and 4 o'clock in the morning and would often fall asleep on the same bed or couch afterwards. They had just performed together only a short time before the ceremony and weren't nervous then…so why were they now? Every single one of their close friends and siblings knew there was serious chemistry between them both; it was almost a group inside joke at that point.

As the ceremony began to come to a close, her heart started pounding again. She knew that he would be at the afterparty, and she tried to calm herself, thinking she'd have all the time in the world to make up her mind to either run from him or spend the rest of the night with him. She knew her friends wouldn't let her run from him though, they knew her too well; they'd keep her there.

The final announcements were given, and as the crowd dispersed among the cocktails, hors d'oeuvres and onto the dance floor, his nervousness began to resurface. He knew his brothers would make him at least say something to her before the night ended, he was sure of that. He didn't know what he'd say to her when the time came though, which was strange for him; he'd always been the one to be "smooth" with the ladies. He'd thought that since all the performing and professionalism was done for the evening, that he could have a normal conversation with her like he always did, but tonight was different…and they both felt it.

Once the lights dimmed and the songs started to play, she felt a short-lived sense of relief; now she could hide. Or so she thought. She subtly scanned the crowd to see where he'd gone, but he wasn't there. A barrage of slightly panicked thoughts began to rack her mind that something was wrong; she knew he would often disappear if he was stressed or upset, and as she stood there contemplating what to do, a big hand softly grabbed hers.

He knew she'd probably look for him after the ceremony, and he was determined not to make things awkward between them. Steeling his nerves, he knew he had to find her before his anxiety got the best of him. Earlier in the evening, he had accidentally discovered a small, secluded spot with an amazing view of the city lights below the venue, and he knew it was the perfect spot to spend the rest of the night with her.

She had no idea he was planning this. In her mind, she was ready to watch the evening play itself out and just let whatever happened, happen. She knew she'd eventually come to terms with the fact that it made no sense for her to be so nervous around someone she'd known almost her whole entire life, but it was too overwhelming. She knew once they started talking that everything would be fine like it always was, but she just couldn't bring herself to get past the fear of figuring out how to make that happen. To her, he looked so good that it was almost intimidating. Usually, all he wore were hoodies and sweatpants; seeing him dressed for the occasion was a mental reset for her.

He'd forgotten how amazing she looked when she got ready for events like this; in his eyes she was glowing. He knew that's what was making him so uneasy, and his mind had almost tricked him into thinking that she was out of his league, but he knew that wasn't true. He felt that it was a stupid reason for him to be so nervous around her, and he knew that if he didn't make the first move and talk to her, he never would. He was almost relieved when he walked up behind her and she wasn't facing him, but an impulse decision made him gently slip his hand into hers before he realized what he was doing.

She didn't flinch when their hands connected, she knew it was him. As he led her to the spot he'd found, neither of them said a word. This was familiar, this was simple. It was what they were used to. The special connection between the two of them was mostly unspoken, but they both felt it, and it was real; their hearts had connected a long time ago.
