This story is a one-shot sequel to Team Pines, which means there's spoilers to things that haven't happened yet, but it's pride month and I couldn't help wanting to write a story about Cary finding out she fits in.
Cary is my oc, she's a fankid of Stan and Eda, if you haven't read Team Pines you might not understand this story, but I hope you like it regardless!
"Wendy!" Cary stumbled out of the gift shop with a grin on their face, coming over to where Wendy was fixing the golf cart.
"What's up, Feathers?" Wendy asked, smiling affectionately at her partner.
"You'll never guess what I just found."
"What?"
"Guess."
Wendy rolled her eyes, "A Leprecorn?"
"No, and because I know you won't take this seriously I'll just tell you."
"Great, I look forward to knowing what's got you so excited."
Cary, ever the storyteller, started from the beginning, "So, I was in the gift shop, working the register while Melody was on her break, and there was no one around so I was taking an online quiz to find out whether or not I'm nonbinary-"
"But you already know you're nonbinary. You've known that for like two years," Wendy pointed out.
"Yeah, but sometimes I doubt myself so I like taking quizzes like that to reassure myself that I'm not faking it."
"Whatever floats your goat, babe."
"So anyway, I was taking the quiz and when I got to the end and confirmed that I am in fact nonbinary I saw a flag I'd never seen before. So I looked it up and it turns out there's a nonbinary flag now! Isn't that the coolest?"
"That's awesome!" Wendy cheered, loving how happy it made Cary.
"I finally feel seen, Wendy. I knew there were other nonbinary people out there but now it feels like there's a real community."
"You deserve to have a community," Wendy said, leaning over and pressing a kiss to Cary's cheek.
"Do you want to see the flag?" Cary asked, unable to contain their enthusiasm.
"Of course I do." Cary pulled up the photo they'd already saved to their phone and showed it off to Wendy, who oohed and ahhed appropriately.
"It's really pretty," Wendy commented.
"I know, right? I'm going to make a patch of it and put it on dad's jacket. And oh! I need to call dad and tell him about it. I bet he'll think it's super cool."
"I bet he'll fly a nonbinary flag on the Stan O'War II."
"Oh, that would be so badass. Will you help me make a flag to hang up in my room?"
"Absolutely, it's a date." Sometimes it was hard to be proud of being queer in the middle of nowhere, Oregon. So Wendy was always happy when her partner could take pride in the different aspects of themself. As the world got more accepting things would get easier, but until then Wendy would always be there to love and support Cary.
