Chin helped Steve lift Danny out of the wooden coffin and carefully set him down a few feet away from the hole. Steve's muddy fingers rested on Danny's neck waiting for the familiar thump of life. But the only thing he felt was how cold Danny's neck was and no movement. Steve's heart skipped a beat as he held his breath adjusting his fingers and waited.
"Damn it Danny." Steve said under his breath as his back straightened, placing his hands over his partners chest he started chest compressions. Counting in his head as he pushed down on his best friends lifeless chest. His eyes burning as tears threatened to fall thinking he might loose his best friend. "You can't do this Danny." He would never get over the fact that Danny died because of someone wanting revenge on him. There's been enough death of friends hanging over Steve's head. "Breath!"
Chin lifted Danny's chin up opening his mouth a bit. He watched as water came out with every chest compression Steve did. "Come on Danny, breathe." Chin begged looking down at Danny's ashen face. He was about to give him a breath when Danny's body convulsed and water spewed from his blue lips.
Steve rolled Danny on to his side immediately rubbing at his back as he coughed up the water. "Thank God." He said looking up at the sky, rain slapping his face as he let out the breath he hadn't realize he was holding. "You're ok buddy, you're ok." Steve's voice shook as he leaned closer to Danny so he could hear him.
Chin let out a long breath as a small smile showed on his face along with relief.
Once Danny's coughing subsided his body shook from the shock and cold. His eyes wide with terror as he gulped for air as he looked around. "Where am I?" He shocked himself with how low and weak his voice sounded. Memories of being closed in for what felt like a lifetime flashed in his mind causing his eyes to grow wide. "I had the most awful dream!" He yelled, or he thought he did but it barely came out above a whisper. Danny looked to the left seeing the mud piled up next to him. "Or not." Danny just watched the rain bounce off the mud, the hairs on his body raising, the fear like he felt earlier creeping up on him again. Suddenly he found it hard to breath as his chest felt constricted, his heart pounding ageist his ribs.
Steve looked down at Danny with concern seeing the look in his eyes. "I'm here. You're free." Steve placed his hand lightly on Danny's shoulder. "You're ok." He told him, but Danny looked right past him the rain smacking against his face unfazed. "Danny?" Steve squeezed Danny's arm. "Take a deep breath Danny. Let it out slowly. Come on." Steve told him knowing Danny was having a panic attack.
