A friend of Ken's was arrested for murder. Perry agreed to defend the man. He hoped it would take a while so he could avoid a fishing trip with two people he'd rather not spend time with. Ken and his girlfriend, Amy, were in the midst of a bit of a rough patch. Della and Joy had gone back to Los Angeles for a little break. They had just returned. Della walked into the suite, "Perry, you're never going to believe this," Della said.
"There are many things I thought I'd never believe."
Joy ran into the suite, excited, "I got my license!"
Perry stared at his daughter in shock, "who in God's name would give you a driver's license?"
"The state of California."
"I never thought she'd pass a driving test in Los Angeles," Perry said.
"You're the one who had us go home for the week."
"I figured she'd fail, and that would be that."
"I got my permit before we even came out here. It was going to expire and I'd have to take the test again," Joy pointed out.
Della looked at her husband, "that's on you. I leave you two alone for one day and she guilts you into taking her for her permit."
Perry looked at his daughter, "you're too young to drive."
"I'm sixteen," she pointed out. The girl had turned sixteen a month ago. "According to the United States government, I'm old enough to drive."
"What do they know?" Perry replied.
"Not much, but who cares?! I got my driver's license!" The teen danced happily as her parents smiled. Getting your license is a right of passage, a milestone in your life. While parents can be happy for you, that doesn't mean they have to like it.
One day, Perry and Della returned to their suite to find it torn apart. Perry heard a noise and followed it. He saw a man walking down the stairs. By the way the man looked at Perry, the lawyer could tell that he was the one who had been in the room. Joy was approaching the door as the man left Perry's sight. "What's wrong?"
"I think that man was in our room."
"What makes you think that?"
Perry gestured for Joy to go inside, "oh," she said as she looked around. "Well, at least it's not our actual home. Where is that by the way?"
"Cute," Perry said.
Ken's friend was acquitted, and Perry and Della were able to use their many years of experience to help Ken and Amy make up. "Why don't we all go out to dinner?" Perry suggested.
"I'll drive," Joy said.
"In that case, I'll order room service."
"Come on, daddy. I'm not a bad driver. Just let me drive home."
"Home to this suite or home to Los Angeles? One, maybe, the other, no way."
"Home to this suite."
"Fine," Perry said.
Joy jumped excitedly and hugged her father, "thank you."
"Thank you in advance for not killing me."
Everyone enjoyed dinner, but Perry and Della were terrified to let their daughter drive home. Joy was doing very well and got them all home in one piece. Once Perry had finished teaching, the family returned home to Los Angeles. Perry had finally decided to do something about his weight. He was going to have surgery to help him lose weight a bit more easily. The man knew that his daughter worried about him, and he hated that. Plus, he wanted to stay in her life a lot longer.
Della and Joy took Perry to the hospital for his surgery. Everything went well and they were there when he woke up. They stayed until visiting hours were over. Perry had to take it easy for a while once he had been released. A month after his surgery, he had another knee surgery. They were hoping with the weight loss that it would be more effective and it was. Perry kept losing weight and strengthening his knee. Joy started hanging out with other students her age who were being homeschooled. Ken had even gone back to Los Angeles with them after things ended with Amy. Paul was always working so they hardly saw him anymore. The private investigator did keep in contact with his surrogate family. Especially his surrogate sister who's looked up to him since she was a little girl.
