Della and Joy were making their way to the hotel suite. "How old is this girl?" Joy asked.

"Thirteen," Della answered.

"Sorry," Joy said.

"Why are you sorry?"

"Thirteen wasn't one of my best years."

"What about the others? Are you sorry for those too?"

"I'll have to get back to you on that."

Della smiled as the two approached the door. A hotel employee was leaving just as they entered. At the table, with enough food to feed a small army, was a fourteen-year-old girl. "Who are you?" the girl asked Della.

"I'm Della Mason, Perry's wife." She gestured at her daughter, "this is our daughter, Joy." Joy waved at the girl.

"Would you like something to eat?"

"No, thank you, dear," Della said.

Perry walked in and kissed his wife before giving his daughter a kiss on the cheek. Joy looked at her father suspiciously, "I have a feeling you're going to owe me, big time."

"Oh, I know I am," he smiled.

Joy really took a liking to Melanie. In fact, she felt sorry for her. Melanie snuck out a couple of times, "I don't know how you of all people can lose someone," Perry said to his daughter after the last time Melanie snuck out.

"I turned my back for a second."

"That's all it takes to lose a child or a teenager."

While that comment wasn't meant to upset Joy, it did. "Guess it's a good thing I didn't have one."

Perry froze, speechless. He hadn't even thought about that. Della gently put a hand on her daughter's shoulder, "that's not what he meant," she said softly. "Why don't you go take a break? When we find Melanie, I'll let you know."

Joy went to her room. Perry sat, frustrated, "I can't believe I said that."

"Give her a little time to herself. She'll realize that's not what you intended."

"Do you think she wanted the baby?"

"I think a part of her did," Della answered, "it was the trauma attached to the pregnancy that terrified her and tore her up inside."

"Well, this is a switch," Perry said.

"What is?"

"She's mad at me and will probably go to you for comfort."

Della smiled, "she won't stay mad at you."

Ken was still in the room, "I can go back out to look for Melanie."

There was a knock at the door. One of the suspects brought Melanie into the suite, furious. The girl had been following and spying on him. Once he'd left, Perry took Melanie to her room to talk to her while Della went to tell Joy that the girl was back.

That night, Perry was in his and Della's room while she was with the girls. She had them order room service and hoped the entire menu didn't show up. Melanie and Joy were sitting on the couch, looking at a magazine. Della had knocked some pencils on the floor and bent down to pick them up. She felt a familiar pain, "Joy, help," she said.

Joy quickly stood and rushed to her mother. She helped the woman straighten back up, "you haven't had trouble with your back in a while."

"I know," Della winced.

"Why don't you go sit down? I'll pick this up."

"Thank you," Della said. Joy helped her mother to the couch where Melanie was.

"What happened to your back?"

"I hurt it a while back. It acts up every now and then."

Joy picked up the fallen pencils and returned to the sitting area. There was a knock at the door and she went to answer it. The hotel employee brought the food in and Joy signed for it. Melanie placed the food on the table so the man could take the cart. The thirteen-year-old walked over to Della, "here, I'll help you."

"Thank you, sweetheart," Della said.

Melanie helped the woman to a chair at the table before joining her. Joy took a seat as well. Once they were done eating, both girls could tell that Della was uncomfortable. "Mom, why don't I help you to bed?"

"I'll be fine," Della said, "besides, your father may still need me."

"Daddy would tell you to go to bed too."

Della sighed, "fine."

It took both Melanie and Joy to get Della ready and settled in bed. Joy contacted her father to let him know. The girl had given her mother a pain pill that knocked her out.

Once Melanie's father was acquitted, it was time to say goodbye. It wasn't easy for anyone. They had all grown fond of the girl and vice versa. After saying goodbye, the Masons' and Ken returned to the suite. They took a little time to winde down before leaving Vegas.
