Chapter 5

"I like your car." It was the first time Myah had ridden in the front seat of Danny's camaro and she glanced around admiringly before buckling herself in.

"Thank you." Danny responded. "I'm enjoying driving it."

Myah glanced over at him. "You are?"

"Yep. When your dad's around somehow he always ends up behind the wheel. Says it makes him carsick not to drive." Danny rolled his eyes at this.

"Carsick? I didn't know that."
"I'm pretty sure it's a control thing."

"You think he's doing okay?"

"Yeah, are you listening to me? He always has to be in control, ergo I'm sure he's taking care of business over there. He'll be back before you know it."

"You think he's going to be really mad about yesterday?"

Danny grimaced. "I don't think he's going to be happy."

Myah sighed. "No. You think he ever regrets adopting me?"

"Absolutely not. He adores you."

"But… He loves going on adventures and… and doing all these crazy things…. You said so yourself. So I feel like he's going to be on a major adrenaline high from helping Jenna rescue her fiance and then have to come back here and realize how much it sucks to have to take care of a dumb teenager that got drunk-"

"Hey!" Danny cut her off sharply. "Stop right there. Yes, Steve has crazy running through his veins. But the most important thing in the world to him is family. Without a doubt. I know he's told you a little about how his family fell apart when he was a kid, right? What's he told you?"

"Just… that his mom was killed in a car accident and when he was fifteen his dad sent him and Aunt Mary to the mainland. And his dad was killed before they ever had a chance to reconnect."

"That's right. All that… that was really hard on him and no amount of jumping out of airplanes is ever going to make that right. But you and Nahele… building a family with him… that's making him whole again."

"He says the team is like family too."

"Yeah… yeah. But you have got to get it through your skull that his mind is never going to change about you. He's never going to stop loving you, any more than I could stop loving Grace."

Myah tucked her chin, feeling herself tear up a little at his words.

"Now, that's not to say he's going to be happy about yesterday. But… it was an accident."

"Hanging out with Lacey wasn't though. Looking back, I should have just said no, or that I'd talk to her on the phone. She just wanted someone to talk to. I think having… dad… gone… I don't even know what I was thinking. Even before he left." Myah thought back to her precarious climb up the trellis.

"What'd you do before he left?"

"What?!"

"What?"

Myah was caught off guard, feeling like he'd read her mind.

"You know, I am no detective… wait, yes I am! What'd you do before he left?"

"I… I… was all worried and depressed outside and it was past when I was supposed to be in bed, so I climbed the outside trellis to get upstairs."

Danny's reaction was as expected. "You what?! That rickety trellis?"

"It was actually pretty sturdy."

"MJ, why would you do that? Steve wouldn't have been that upset, I know that for a fact! He would have just sent you to bed!"

"I didn't want to bother him! He was figuring out how to get the weapons he needed in North Korea! I was afraid he'd miss some detail if he was distracted by me!" Myah pleaded with her eyes for him to understand.

"Myah Joelle McGarrett… What am I going to do with you? Please tell me you were listening a few minutes ago when I told you how important you are to him."

"I was." Myah's voice was soft and she felt small.

"So in retrospect, please tell me that you realize you just should have gone in and talked to him. You both need some sense knocked into you." he muttered the last sentence.

Myah leaned her head against the last window. Danny had been pretty clear about her being the one to fill Steve in regarding the events of the day before. Now that her trellis escapade had come out, she was going to need to include that in the details as well. She sighed heavily and wondered if behaving herself would ever get any easier.

They pulled into the parking lot of the Iolani Palace. Danny pointed to a cafe down the street. "That place has the best gyros I've found on this island." He pulled some cash from his wallet. "Why don't you go grab us some lunch and bring it up to the office."

"Okay."

"Straight there and back, you understand me? Any detours and I won't be waiting for Steve to deal out justice."

Myah poked her lower lip out at him. "After yesterday, I wouldn't trust me either."

"Aww…" Danny grabbed her in a quick hug. "You have a hard time staying out of trouble, but I don't think there's a vindictive bone in your body. You know I love you."

"I love you too, uncle Danny." Myah's voice was muffled against his chest. He released her and she headed towards the cafe. She ordered Danny his requested gyro sandwich and a gyro bowl with the meat and vegetables on rice for herself. She perched on a stool by the window to wait for her order and idly watched the crowd walking by. She had only lived in Hawaii for a few months but she loved it so far. Living with Steve she had experienced more of the outdoors than she had in her fourteen years of living in the states and she'd found the island to be beyond amazing. She still felt very much like an outsider amongst the local kids, although she had met a few really nice people at Lacey's party several weeks ago, prior to the event going very south. She still would have given just about anything to be able to attend school with Sam and Grace in the fall.

The food took a little longer than she'd expected, but when the woman at the counter handed her the bag and apologized for the delay, the scent of the food more than made up for it. Back at Iolani Palace, she entered and nodded to the officer on duty at the front desk. He handed her a visitor badge that she clipped onto her shirt and made her way to the elevator. There seemed to be a whirl of activity and noise when she stepped out onto the second floor.

Danny had just stepped out of his office into the main conference area. "I've tried Steve's

satellite phone ten times in the last fifteen minutes. No answer."

Kono responded. "The area they're in is all deep forest. It may have blocked the signal."

"No, something is wrong. Something is wrong, otherwise, why would Jenna lie to us?" Danny's words made Myah freeze in her tracks. She looked up when Chin spoke up.

"Question is, did Jenna have anything to do with Bethany Morris' murder?"

"Myah! What are you doing here?"

Myah jumped at the voice next to her, and looked in amazement at Agent Lori Weston. She had met Agent Weston several weeks ago and recalled that she had actually been a member of the team a while back, but was supposed to be back on the mainland.

"Just… just bringing lunch."

"Myah…" Danny finally took note of her appearance. "Come here, babe. I need you to go wait in your dad's office."

"Why?" Myah felt her heart sinking. "Did something happen? Is dad okay?" She felt Agent Weston take hold of her elbow and start to walk her forward.

Chin took in her expression. "Myah, as far as we know, Steve's fine. We've just learned that the woman he's with, hasn't been honest about her whereabouts and we're trying to figure out why."

"Has there been any word from Steve?" Agent Weston asked, her thin eyebrows raised.

"No, nothing." Danny sighed.

"Okay, look, there's gotta be a number of logical explanations as to why he's not answering."

Danny threw up his hands in exasperation. "No, there's nothing logical about this. Okay, we just found out that someone we worked with, someone that we trusted, has been lying to us for months, and now might have something to do with our murder."

"The only way we're gonna get answers to any of this is by finding Bethany Morris' killer." Kono pursed her lips.

"Kono, were you able to salvage anything off that drive?" Danny asked.

"Yeah, I managed to recover a bunch of scattered data, including a couple of pages from Bethany Morris' latest article, something called "Lost Prisoner of Fate."

Chin cocked his head. "What's it about?"

Kono was busy typing into the computer. "From what I could make out, it's about something called Operation Switchback."

"That sounds like a military op." Danny said.

"Yeah, that's what I thought." Kono agreed. "Look at this. It's part of an email about a classified CIA file that looks like it's been 95% redacted."

"Jenna's CIA." Chin recalled. "Maybe that's why Bethany went to see her."

Lori shook her head. "I just got off the phone with Langley and they have no official record of an op with that name."

Danny scoffed. "No, no. They're lying."

Lori shot him a look. "Of course, they're lying. But the interesting thing was when I asked them about it, they transferred me to a number in North Carolina, JSOC headquarters, which means Switchback was a joint CIA-Special Forces operation. No way we're gonna get intel on that."

"Wanna bet?" Danny asked. "Hold on, I'm going to make some calls."

Myah settled quietly onto a stool in the corner, praying they would let her stay. Her food sat on the floor next to her, forgotten. Having just walked into the room, she had no idea what the actual situation was, but found it comforting to see the team in action. Listening to them hash out details was the only thing keeping her calm. A small part of her mind wanted to scream in terror. Something was terribly wrong. She pressed her nails into her palms and forced herself to stay silent.

Danny's office door slammed and he re-entered the room. "Of course, Joe couldn't stay in cell phone range. MJ, we're going for a drive."

"Ok." Myah quickly followed him out to his car, where he barely allowed time for her to buckle her seatbelt before roaring out of the parking lot. For the first few tense minutes, she was afraid to say anything, but finally worked up the courage to ask, "Uncle Danny, what's going on?"

He sighed. "Listen, I really don't want you involved in this. Steve's going to be fine. We just need to figure out what's going on. I don't want you to worry."

"But I'm already worried! And the more you guys leave me in the dark, the worse it is! Please tell me."

"I get that. Alright. Our current case involves the murder of a reporter named Bethany Morris. This morning Chin and Kono found out she visited Jenna Kaye… who told us she's been in DC the last few months. When in reality she never left the island. We don't know why she lied to us, but we can't help but assume she's tied to the murder." Danny looked at her, clearly concerned. "You alright? I know I just laid a lot on you."

Myah actually felt like she was having trouble breathing. She remembered how uncomfortable Jenna Kaye had looked upon meeting her, and her shocked expression when Steve had introduced them as his kids. Something had been wrong then. Something was wrong now. The only thing that gave her comfort was that she was in a car speeding along the highway with Danny, who clearly had some sort of plan.

"I'm okay. Where are we going now?"

"We're going to find Joe White. I know you've heard Steve mention him. He was Steve's commanding officer in the Seals. He served with your grandpa."

"And my name?"

"Yeah, you're named for him."

They were quiet for the rest of the drive, as they left the city and after navigating a windy road, ended up on a wide trail of gravel. Myah saw a sign for Pagola Valley, an area she was unfamiliar with. There was a small shack that Danny ran up to. A grizened old man poked his head out the door and spoke to him, although Myah couldn't hear what was being said. Danny was shaking his head when he returned to the car, and he waved Myah out.

"Apparently we're going to have to go on a hike."

"What's he doing back there, anyway?"

"Hunting or something."

"Hunting?"

"Boar hunting."

Myah's mouth dropped. She had gotten used to hearing of unexpected activities from Steve, but boar hunting? The going seemed slow as they picked their way through the field. The terrain was muddy and required all of Myah's attention to avoid landing on her backside. Again, she was thankful for the required focus.

They both breathed a sigh of relief when two deep voices could be heard ahead of them.

"Those are for supporting the windows, not for cross bracing."

"Are you implying I don't know how to build a boar blind?"

"No, I'm not implying it, Wade. I'm saying it."

They reached a small clearing and Danny called out. "Hey, Joe, would it kill you to stay in cell phone range?"

"Hey, what are you doing out here? And you've got Myah?" Myah assumed the man asking was Joe White. She wondered how he recognized her. Having heard several stories about him and knowing Steve held him in high enough regard to have named her for him, she was very curious to finally meet him. He was tall, and bald, with eyes that looked like he was perpetually squinting into the sun. From the way he was handling a large piece of wood, Myah had no doubt he was strong. He was clearly in the process of building a shelter of some sort, with the other man there. The other man had dark hair and was solidly built.

Danny was in no mood for small talk. "Listen, Joe, I need to know everything about a CIA-Special Forces joint operation called Switchback."

The two other men glanced at each other.

The dark haired man shrugged. "Even if it rang a bell, I couldn't disclose anything about it."

Joe nodded. "What's so important about this op?"

"I have no idea," Danny answered. "But a woman was murdered over it. Someone we used to work with might be involved now. Jenna Kaya."

"Why don't you ask her about it?" Joe asked

"Yeah, I would, but I can't because she's with Steve in North Korea.

"What?!" Joe exclaimed. Myah suspected that he was not a man easily rattled, but he was clearly disturbed by this news. She found herself, further concerned by Danny's next words.

"I think he's in trouble, Joe."

After a quick discussion, the men wasted no time in packing up their gear and heading back across the field with them. Joe fell in step next to Myah, and she gave him a shy smile.

"It's nice to meet you finally." he said. "Steve sent me your picture."

"It's nice to meet you too."

"We're going to get your dad back, don't you worry." He spoke with a confidence reminiscent of Steve's and Myah's heart ached at the familiarity.

"He said you trained him."

"That's right. That's why I know he's going to be fine."

Myah swallowed. She liked Joe. She knew both he and Danny meant well in reassuring her. But she also wasn't a little child who didn't understand how the world worked.

"Something you want to say?"

Surprised at his insight, Myah glanced over at Joe. He raised an eyebrow at her.

"I just… I appreciate you guys telling me everything will be fine, but I'm not a little kid. I know things don't always work out fine." A lump appeared in her throat and she focused on the blueness of the sky. "A lot of times they don't work out fine."

"You're right. But when we have a choice, we do what we can. And just because something's fragile doesn't mean it has to break. It just means we have to work a little harder to protect it. You understand me?"

"Yes sir." Myah said softly. She did understand him, but at the same time, her mind was throwing up every protective barrier it could, to avoid drawing her thought processes in the mental anguish that was threatening.

Danny was on the phone for most of the car ride back. Myah did get to ask him Agent Weston's presence.

"Lori? She needed help tying a few loose strings up regarding the witness protection case she was here for a few weeks ago. When she heard something might be going on with Steve, she decided to stick around."

Myah rolled her eyes. "She totally has a thing for him."

"Hey we can use all the help we can get right now." Danny scolded, before glancing over at her. "You're not wrong though."

They had reached the Iolani Palace parking lot when it occurred to Myah that she needed to alert Nahele that something had very likely gone wrong with Steve's mission. She waved Danny on inside, choosing the privacy of his car for her call. Nahele picked up on the third ring.

"Hey. I'm still at work. Long shift today."

"I know. Can you take a break?"

"I'm talking to you, aren't I?"

"Listen… don't freak out, but something may have gone wrong with Dad's mission." Nahele was silent, so Myah continued on. "They don't know for sure; they just know that that Jenna Kaye person lied about some things and they don't trust she was honest with him."

"Okay." It was barely detectable by Myah knew she heard a tremble in his voice.

"I promise I'll let you know as soon as they know anything."

"Okay." was all he said again, before hanging up.

Myah sighed and leaned her head back. A buzzing sound alerted her to Danny's phone sitting in the driver's seat, having clearly slipped out of his pocket. Automatically she reached out to pick it up and accidentally answered it.

"Danny! It's Jenna! I screwed up! I'm so sorry!"

Myah froze at the sound of the woman's voice. She was clearly sobbing on the other end of line. Myah pushed the car door open, wanting to get inside as quickly as possible.

"It's Myah, I'll get Danny…"

"I can't hear you Danny! It's Wo Fat. It's Wo Fat, Danny. He has him and I led Steve right to him."

Myah's breath caught in her throat. "Is he okay?"

"We're south of Kaesong, a town called…" There was static on the line.

"A town called what?" Myah called out desperately. "You broke up. Please say it again!" Again there was only static. She turned and ran into the palace and tore upstairs.

"Uncle Danny! Chin!" She held out the phone. "You left your phone in the car! Jenna called! She was freaking out and saying something about… Wo Fat! That she led Uncle Steve to him!"

"Hold on, Myah." Chin grabbed her shoulders firmly. "Take a deep breath and tell us exactly what she said".

Myah took a shuddering breath and when the rest of the team joined them, she managed to repeat the short conversation word for word.

Lori folded her arms across her chest. "The governor has to do something."

"I don't know." Chin responded. "Steve went into North Korea on a completely unsanctioned, personal mission."

"He thought he was helping a friend." Kono murmured.

Lori rolled her eyes. "Some friend."

Joe White took that moment to exit the elevator. "Any word?

Myah listened as they relayed the conversation from Jenna to him and tried to calm her breathing.

Lori finished with "We're still waiting to hear if the governor can help us."

Chin asked, "You get anywhere with the military?"

Joe shook his head. "Not in terms of rescuing Steve. But I got some interesting intel about Operation Switchback that could help us."

"What'd you find out?" Kono asked.

"It was a CIA op into North Korea that went bad… resulted in the capture of one Officer Joshua Hirsch."

"That was Kaye's fiance." Kono recalled.

"Yeah," Chin spoke up. "She took a leave from 5-0 thinking he could be alive."

"Seems a reporter named Bethany Morris was asking all about Operation Switchback, specifically about officer Hirsch." Joe said.

"Why?" Kono asked.

"She claimed she had a source in SK that said he was alive. And since Jenna Kaye was listed as the intel officer for the op."

Chin nodded. "Then Bethany Morris went to see her to ask her about it."

Lori huffed impatiently. "Sorry, how does this help us?"

Myah flinched at the question. She thought it sounded disrespectful and while she didn't understand all the details either, simply being with the team was calming her racing heart. She was reminded that she was not the only person in the room who cared about Steve.

Joe focused on Lori. "Because the un-redacted Switchback file details the location of a bunker just south of Kaesong. And it's suspected to be a cache for Wo Fat.

Lori's eyes widened. "Okay, Kaesong… Myah, isn't that where Kaye said she was when she got cut off?"

Myah nodded and Kono answered, "Yeah."

Danny's phone rang and they all jumped hopefully. He shook his head and stepped back towards his office. "It's the governor. Give me a minute." He was only gone a few minutes and when he stepped back into the main area, he looked dejected. "We can forget it because even if the governor appealed to the state department about launching a diplomatic mission, something like that could take weeks, maybe even months to get approved."

"We don't have that kind of time." Lori snapped.

For once, Myah agreed with her.

Chin nodded. "We have to act now, or Steve's as good as dead."

"That's right." Joe responded.

"So?" Kono spoke up. "What do we do?"

Sounding as calm as though he were making dinner reservations, Joe said, "We're gonna bring Steve home."

Myah let out a sigh of relief at his words. She suddenly felt all eyes in the room on her. "What?"

Danny's brow crinkled. "The Grovers won't be back on the island for a week. Chin, could Malia…"

"She's teaching at a conference this week, but she could check in on them."

"Wait, you're worried about me?" Myah suddenly realized. "I am the last thing you should be thinking about. Nahele and I will be fine."

Chin shook his head. "You're still fourteen, sweetie. I'll call Malia." He stepped away from the table, already pulling out his cell phone.
"And MJ, last I checked I had to carry your intoxicated self to bed last night."

"Intoxicated?!" For the second time that day, Joe White looked both startled and displeased.

"Uncle Danny…" Myah said, looking at him reproachfully. "You know that was an accident."

"Oh, I know… and I am still not happy that it happened on my watch."

"Aw, leave her alone guys…" Kono wrapped an arm around Myah's shoulders. "I've got your back, girl." Myah was briefly reminded of how much she adored the woman.

"I talked to Malia." Chin re-entered the room. "She's going to be calling you guys this evening and checking in with you throughout the day. If it's an emergency, she'll leave the conference." He placed a firm hand on Myah's shoulder, and locked gaze with her. "I'm counting on you."

Myah nodded and wrapped her arms around Chin's waist. He was probably the most gentle soul she'd ever met and she honestly thought she would be destroyed if she ever disappointed him.
The brief moment was clearly too long for Lori, as she spoke up impatiently. "Well, if we're done getting a babysitter for the kids, we should get going, right?"

Myah pursed her lips and was reminded of how much she really didn't care for that woman. She was incredibly thankful that as far as she knew, Steve did not return the feelings Lori felt for him.

"I've got to make a couple calls." Joe said. "I'll drop Myah off at the house. The rest of you, meet me at the airfield in two hours, sharp. Let's go."

Glancing at Danny, who gave her a quick nod, Myah followed Joe outside. He had a quick stride and she almost had to run to keep up. Once inside his car, she noticed she had a text from Nahele wanting to know if there were any updates. Joe was already on the phone and so she quickly texted her brother back.

"The team is going to go get Dad. I'm with Joe White right now, and he's kind of leading them, I guess. You know Joe?"

"Dad calls him Uncle Joe. I've met him a couple times."

"It sounds pretty intense. But they seem pretty confident they can get Dad back."

"Kamekona says Danny just messaged him about staying with us until they get back."

"Are you kidding me?" Myah exclaimed aloud.

Joe looked over at her. "What's wrong?"

"I just… Nahele says Uncle Danny texted Kamekona about staying with us until you guys get back."

"Is that a problem?" he asked dryly.

"I don't care what Lori says. We don't need a babysitter."

"Well, what matters is what Steve says. He asked Danny to stay with you guys while he was gone initially, right?"

"Technically, yes."

"Well, then technically he'd want someone staying with you. So behaving yourself for Kamekona goes without saying, doesn't it."

Myah couldn't help but scowl in response, as she leaned her head against the window. She wasn't sure why it rubbed her the wrong way so entirely. All she knew was that she just wanted Steve home.

Joe parked in the driveway and turned an unflappably calm gaze onto Myah. She shifted in her seat feeling almost as uncomfortable as if it were Steve in his place.

"Alright, young lady. You're Steve's daughter and my namesake and as such, I have determined to take a personal interest in your career."

"My career?"

"Yes. And don't think I won't tan your hide if I think you need it. We clear?"

Myah's lips parted slightly at his words. She could feel all the frustration and fear from the day pressing through every mental barrier she had thrown up. She desperately wanted to scream or at least cry, but was afraid if that happened she would lose control entirely.

"I can't hear you." Joe's tone could have been Steve's. There was no doubt about who Steve had received his training from. She actually wanted to answer him, but honestly couldn't find words to speak. Feeling trapped by her own wordlessness in the car, Myah pushed the door open and ran up to the garage where she rapidly entered the code and as soon as the door opened, ducked underneath and inside. Her movement was smooth but she felt completely out of control.

Myah had assumed Joe would peal out of the driveway upon her exit, but found she was not entirely surprised when he followed her. He didn't appear in a hurry, but somehow was next to her almost immediately. Casually, he scratched the back of his neck. "Last chance."

Myah wanted to give in. Wanted to promise she'd be good and listen to him assure her that everything was going to be fine and he'd bring Steve back safe and sound. Her heart was pounding in her ears, and her breath was rapid, and she gave into instinct, attempting to dart past him.

With the speed born of years of practice, he stepped to the side and caught her around the waist, hoisting her easily over his shoulder. Catching his shoulder blade in her belly and feeling precarious in spite of his grip, Myah gasped and clung to his waist in spite of herself. Joe only carried her a few feet, and in what seemed like one smooth motion, set her down, sat onto the lifting bench and jerked her forward over his lap. With no verbal forewarning, he swatted her upturned bottom hard, twice on each side. Myah squealed in pain, and actually had to glance back to assure herself that he hadn't picked up a paddle to use on her behind, and saw that it was only his hand.

Joe finally spoke. "Now I doubt Steve doles out a spanking every night of the week, but I'm firmly willing to bet you've been in this position before. And lucky for you, I have just enough time to make my point clear to you before we fly out." Myah sucked in her breath, as he continued spanking her in earnest, alternating sides with the flat of his hand. She couldn't help but cry out in pain.

"Please, please, stop."

"So now we're getting somewhere. You're willing to talk."

She was willing. Getting her bottom blistered like this was making it impossible to keep the tears at bay, and while she was pretty sure her backside was on fire, she also felt a flood of relief at finally being able to cry. "I'm… I'm sorry."

An apology didn't seem enough for Joe, and he tipped her forward slightly in order to access the lower part of her butt, delivering several swats on each cheek before speaking again. "I'm going to go after Steve. When I find him, I need to be able to tell him that you're safe here… not causing trouble for Kamekona. You understand me?"

Myah nodded rapidly. "Yes, sir." She flinched when he moved his hand again, but this time he gently helped her sit up next to him on the bench. The hard bench did not make for easy sitting after a spanking, but at this point she knew better than to complain. Joe put his arm around her and she leaned against him, trying to calm her breath. "I'm sorry. I'm just so scared." She hiccuped. "I just want… Dad home. It makes me mad to think of anyone else being here, because I want him. I know that's stupid. I'm sorry."

Joe kissed the top of her head. "It's not stupid. I know you're scared and I'd be concerned if you weren't. But I haven't lost him yet and frankly I don't intend to now. I love that boy like he's my own."

Myah felt her heart rate calming. She was still terrified for Steve, but her mind had calmed, and her heart was filling with trust that if anyone could bring him home, Joe could. Her voice was still wobbly, but she pushed her lower lip out and looked up at him, attempting to summon just a fraction of her usual sass. "Well… I'm not really feeling that love, Uncle Joe."

"Oh, you're going to be feeling it for a while, if I did my job right… which I did. Now, go get settled inside. As you know, cell service will not be reliable, but I promise to let you know as soon I can, when we have your Dad back in one piece. We clear?"

This time, Myah was able to nod and answer. "Yes, sir." Impulsively she hugged him. "Thanks uncle Joe."

"You're welcome. I wasn't sure you were going to feel too kindly towards me after a trip over my knee."

"Oh, I'm not thanking you for that… I'll be mad for a while about that… I'm thankful you're going to get Dad."

"Wow, you are a sass, aren't you?"
