Right, so I would like to express how sorry I am for how quiet I've been. Like I said previously, this was my last year in University, and I graduated last Thursday with a Bachelors in History. Unfortunately due to a mix up, I only have three credits left, and I'm taking one more class in the Fall. But overall I'm done with college, and I have time to relax and such before I start looking for a job. So wish me luck, and thank you all for your patience.
Now for this story, I got inspired by Pitch, and I actually liked the show a little when it aired. And it inspired me to write this. But I lost interest and left it on the back burner. But, I then used this and edited it for my Creative Writing Class I took last year. I would like to make this clear and I would like to not have reviews that will shout insults or sexism. I'm all for constructive criticism, so please be nice.
And if your wondering, I honestly don't know if a woman will ever join the NFL or MLB or any other professional sport. If a woman does try, then I'll give her a chance, and see if she can make it or break it.
So I own none of the content, and please enjoy.
A woman in her early twenties sat at the foot of a bed in her hotel room, her leg was bouncing with nervous energy, and the atmosphere in the room felt both nervous and heavy with excitement. She was currently watching an ESPN Panel talking about something excitedly.
"It's history in the making for the NFL. It all started when a young junior was scouted for San Diego State to be their Wide Receiver, and then continued on to be one of the best in College Football. Then in their senior year against all odds she was picked for the draft, and was picked tenth in the First Round by the San Francisco 49ers. And if you've been living under a rock all this time, then let me tell you. A woman is now playing the NFL folks!"
"That's right John, 22 year old Alexis 'Lexi' Hunterson has made history as the first woman in the NFL! No one thought this day would come, but against all odds, Lexi has proven us wrong. What do you think, Ray?"
"Well… like I've been saying before, and I mean no harm in saying this but, we'll just have to see how she does throughout this season. I already admitted she had talent and was going places throughout her career in San Diego State, but college and the NFL are two completely different leagues. I'm all for giving Lexi a chance, but you and I know that none of these guys are going to hold back, they will test her, they will push her. The gloves are off, so-to-speak, and Lexi will have to push herself to-"
Lexi turned the TV off, and took a breath; she was both excited and nervous. Excited because she was following the dream she's had since she was a kid, and had finally made it to her goal in playing the NFL. And nervous about how she was going to do today, even though she had been through this dozens of times now, but this was completely different. All the hard work, sacrifices, and hardships she had to endure, it all led to this.
The sexism she faced growing up due to her being a girl, trying to play in a male dominated sport.
To the long nights in college where she divided her time studying for classes so she can graduate, and practicing for her games so she can play and hopefully qualify for the NFL.
The countless injuries she had, which weren't anything major, but enough that she had push herself, and also gained the respect from her coaches and teammates for her hard work and perseverance.
And also the waiting and petitions she had to go through, so she can play in Middle School, High School, College, and finally waiting anxiously in the Draft Hall with everyone else in New York for her name to be possibly called, and get her team jersey and number from the Commissioner.
She remembered that night vividly; she was with her parents, and her cousin Jason, who was her manager. As well as her close friend and teammate, Marcus Gonzalez, who was a Running Back, and he sitting with his Agent and his parents next to their table. He had been picked by San Francisco in the 9th Pick, and the team had the 10th pick as well.
She was frozen in shock for a moment, and then smiled with joy, and hugged everyone around her when she was picked next. She remembered walking up to the podium, amongst the applause or boos, hugging the Commissioner, who said she was making history, and getting her hat and jersey.
And fully realizing she had finally made it.
She got out of her musings when she got up to stretch. She stood at 5'7 which was short for someone in her position as a Wide Receiver, due to the average height of a Wide Receiver being over 6'0, but she had used that to her advantage numerous times. She weighed at 175 pounds that allowed her to look big, but she had muscle, and she was between husky and lean surprisingly.
She then heard a knocking at the door, and heard a familiar voice.
"Hey Lex it's time! Let's get a move on!"
Lexi grabbed her duffle bag, and opened the door. A man wearing a suit and sneakers was on the other side of the door. He stood an inch taller than her, and he had an easygoing smile.
"C'mon Lex, let's not keep everyone waiting. History is being made."
Lexi snorted, and said," Really, I didn't know."
She closed the door, and walked with to the elevator. As they were walking, the man took out a Walkie-talkie, and then said.
"Hey, she's on her way down. Get the bus rolling once she's on." He said, and ended the call.
He then looked at Lexi, and said," Hey, I know you're nervous, but you did a lot to get yourself here. Everyone in the family, including myself are rooting and proud of you."
Jason Hunterson was Lexi's older cousin on her mom's side of the family. He worked for a sports agency, and he had been with her, and helped her since she started playing in college, regarding anything legal related. They had been close growing up, and believed she could make it, and had been with her throughout all the challenges she faced up to this moment. It was also a running joke between them that if he had the choice, he would get her to play for the Oakland Raiders, instead of the San Francisco 49ers, due to him being a Raiders fan, but it was Lexi's dream to be in the 49ers, due to them being her favorite team, and was a fan herself.
Both sides of the family were either a Raiders or 49ers fan, and anyone could guess how the family members reacted to Lexi being drafted into San Francisco.
"So, spoke to anyone on the team this morning? I know things have been a little touchy still." Jason asked.
Lexi shrugged, and said," Their warming up to me. I guess it helped with how well I did during practice. Besides, Marcus, Jack, and Deondre are there as well."
"Well, good thing you have some of your old college teammates with you. Also, give the others time, this sport has been a man's sport since it was invented. Even though there's a woman's league, but we also know they don't get enough coverage or taken seriously enough. You, my dear cousin, broke it, and it's up to you and the other women out there to build it new. Sure everyone in the league and other sports are skeptical, but let's prove them wrong." Jason said.
Lexi nodded, and felt the nervousness she had earlier dissipated, and her confidence went up a little. She had been defying all the odds for a while now, and she will continue on.
The elevator dinged, and the doors opened to the sounds of reporters yelling and flashes going off from their cameras. Lexi placed her headphones on, and turned on a song. She walked out with Jason and a couple of guards flanking her, and pushing people out of the way, as they walked towards the entrance. As she was walking, she was met with more people shouting at her, they were trying to grab her attention so they can ask her questions, or they were shouting out support for her.
Once she walked outside, she walked towards the team bus, and before she got in, she looked at Jason. He gave her thumbs up, and a confident smile and she nodded. She took off her headphones once she got onto the bus.
She looked at everyone, who noticed and looked at her, or ignored her. She was used to this, her old teammates ignored her when she first made her presence known, but they had soon warmed up to her over time.
"Yo, Lex, we saved you a seat."
Lexi grinned as she saw Marcus Gonzalez, Jack Westmen, and Deondre Smith sitting near the front. Marcus was a Running Back, Jack was a Tackle, and Deondre was a Cornerback.
She had played with them for a different amount of years, with Marcus being with her for four years, while Jack was two and Deondre was one year, until the both of them got picked in one of the previous drafts.
She sat next to Marcus, and they felt the lurch of the bus, as it took off towards the stadium.
"Four years and here we are. You ready?" Marcus asked.
"Hey, I've been ready and waiting to see if she was going to make it. I had to wait the longest." Deondre said.
"Oh? And how much money did you bet?" Lexi asked.
Jack snorted, and said, "He was hoping you would come here during your junior year. You should've seen his face, when he found you were playing after you graduated." He then got slapped in the back of the head by Deondre, and they all chuckled.
The bus ride lasted for only three minutes, but it felt longer. Once the bus lurched to a stop, the doors opened, and everyone soon piled out of the bus. Lexi was one of the last, and she peered at the stadium of the team she was going to play for.
She felt a bundle of nerves, but she soon steeled herself, and walked into the building.
'Time to make history.' She thought.
