Twin Flame
According to Xingese tradition, when one was looking for a compatible life partner, one needed to make sure that their chi would compliment yours. If it was something that would clash, then the match up would be no good. If it was too similar, then the match up would not work well either. The two different chis needed to be complimentary. That was why those that could sense the Dragon's Pulse were often called in on match making.
Mei herself had experimented with this several times. Everyone's chi was slightly different. For example, Ling Yao's was best described as a carefully maintained river. It flowed and ebbed, but there were times when it would rise up and wash away those who dared to alter it. Lan Fan's by contrast, was like the earth, steady and there, but also ready to do what it must with strength. It was why they were a good match up. Lan Fan was an excellent complement to Ling.
Of course, this wasn't just true for the Xingese people. Mr. Scar's chi had been like a storm raging inside of him. Mr. Yoki's chi was like a fledgling bird, hesitant, but capable if it would only try correctly. Dr. Marcoh's chi had felt like a garden that had been badly neglected. Edward Elric's chi was like a burst of energy, bright, bouncing, and everywhere. Her Alphonse's energy was like the wind and could be a comforting breeze or a force of nature.
However, there was one exception to the rule of complimentary chis being the best in a relationship. Twin chis—that was two people who had what felt like the same type of chi—were often the best matches, although exceedingly rare.
According to what she had read, people with twin chis might look different, act different, and even present themselves differently, but at their core, they were the same. There would be small differences, as there were with every kind of twin, but they would, all in all, be the same. The chis would hold the same feelings, the same imagery, the same paths. The individuals were likely to have the same goals and drive in life. These were powerful individuals who, together, held the potential to change everything.
And Mei had found a pair of twin chi holders.
Mei had briefly encountered Riza Hawkeye and Roy Mustang in her time in Amestris. It had been fleeting moments until she had saved Miss Riza's life, and at that moment, she had been too busy to take the time to observe their chi. They had left Amestris so quickly afterwards that she hadn't really had time then either. But as diplomatic visits between the two countries became more frequent, Mei had observed them further.
Roy Mustang's chi was like a bright, burning flame. It burned hot and powerful, and clearly had the potential to rage out of control. Mei had felt this, and, out of curiosity, focused on the woman who seemed to always be his control. She had expected a feeling of water, or perhaps even earth. She had not expected to feel the same bright burning flame from her. Mei had blinked in surprise and felt for their chi again. That was when she realized what she had found.
Twin chis. Twin Flames.
Both of them had chi that felt like a bright, burning flame, hot, powerful, and with the potential to rage out of control. Mustang's had a slightly wider edge to it, as if it would burn the world down if it was let loose. Hawkeye's had a more inward feel, as if it would destroy both it's targets and itself if let loose. And yet, somehow, these two kept each other in check.
It was obvious, at least to Mei, that the two were absolutely perfect for each other in every way. The twin chi made sense to her. They were the same, both of them, focused and guided together. It explained Mustang's desperation when Hawkeye was dying. It explained what she had been told happened in the tunnels before that. It explained how they had both still managed to stand and fight. It explained why they were leading the charge in changing their country.
They had the same goals. They had the same mind. They had the same determination.
Twin chi.
Twin Flames.
Mei knew that she would spend the rest of her life keeping an eye on these two and their rare pairing. They would do great things, and she wanted to see where they would end up.
