Disclaimer: This story is mine, but these characters do not belong to me. I make no money from this, but I did have a ton of fun writing it.
A/N: This is the 11th and final installment in my series of Season 5 background stories. Nothing was ever altered from the original series as it aired. This story begins with those black and white title cards that told us that Blue Moon Investigations was no more. This in fact was true, but what if there was an epilogue? This is my version of what that might have been.
'I can't imagine not seeing you tomorrow.'
The song, "We'll Be Together Again" played them out over a montage of scenes… memories of the good times. They were scenes viewers of the show will always remember fondly.
Blue Moon Investigations ceased operations on May 14th, 1989.
The Anselmo case was never solved… and remains a mystery to this day.
The black and white title card fell to the side, most likely knocked over by a careless production assistant on his way to catch up with the rest of the cast and crew as they headed out to celebrate the last day of filming on a show that was canceled. The ratings were down, so no loss to them, right? Off to the bar, they went.
But like a forgotten prop left behind on the floor, Maddie and David remained sitting there on the steps of the church altar. They were finally alone… together. And they were silent; there were no more scripted lines.
David sat there, holding Maddie's hand, absent-mindedly running his fingers back and forth over hers. He stared straight ahead, looking at nothing in particular. It was hard to tell if he was deep in thought, or if he'd gone completely blank.
Maddie, too, sat emotionless on the step. She'd never been in this position before… on a show that was canceled… in a storyline that was never resolved. Why did it have to end when there was still so much unfinished business? It was the oddest feeling in the world.
David continued to hold her hand, but he stopped moving. She looked up at his face; he looked so sad and pale, empty almost. He had wanted so badly to work things out with her that night, and now he wouldn't get the chance. Cy was right, she guessed, the romance was over, and so no one bothered to write the script.
After a few moments passed, Maddie stood up. 'We never did get to talk,' she said, with regret in her voice. She leaned down to place a lingering kiss on his temple. He did not react. Maybe this is how this works, she thought. She just didn't know, and since he was not responding to her, she turned to walk away.
David watched Maddie as she walked down the long aisle and approached the large wooden church doors that would let her out into a whole new world. A world without directors and cameras and scripts… without Blue Moon. A world without him. It all didn't seem real… like he was stuck inside a dream. Except it wasn't a dream.
Slowly at first, but then building in intensity, David started to feel an intense warmth flow throughout his body. It was like a tidal wave of panic that brought him to action. No! Don't leave, he thought. He snapped out of the strange trance he was in and quickly stood up just in time to see her opening the door.
'Yo, Madolyn!' he yelled. Damn it, he thought, she didn't hear him. The door closed behind her. He needed to run as fast as he could; he needed to find her before she disappeared into her new life.
He remembered where she parked her car, so he took a short cut out of the rear of the church, hoping to get to the street before her. He had to navigate through an obstacle course of tight, dark hallways, stacks of folding chairs, and piles and piles of trash bags. When his suit jacket got snagged on the top of a chain-link fence, he frantically wriggled his way out of it so he could hop over. It wasn't easy, but eventually he made it. With his heart racing a mile per minute, he sat down on the edge of the sidewalk so that he could catch his breath. He waited there for her to walk by.
'What are you doing here, David?' she said, as she came around the corner and walked to where he was sitting.
'Waiting for you. Maddie, none of this feels right to me. Does it feel right to you?' He stood up next to her.
'Well, no, but we tried to change it just now, and we couldn't. Nobody would help us.'
She looked him up and down and noticed his jacket was missing and several buttons were torn from his dress shirt.
'What happened to you?' she asked.
'Oh, I ran into a fence that didn't like me,' he replied, sarcastically.
David paced up and down the sidewalk. What to do… what to do? He started thinking out loud. 'I mean, if the show is canceled, and Blue Moon doesn't exist anymore… what else doesn't exist? Your house? My apartment? Where do we live?'
'I don't see the car, David. I know we parked it right here. I think they took the car… the company car!'
'Maddie, don't panic! Don't you get it? There is no more company car! But I think I know what we need to do.'
'Well, don't just stand there… tell me!'
He stepped closer… putting his hands around her arms. 'Look, the show is over, right? Everybody left and there's nothing we can do about that.'
Maddie nodded her head in agreement, and David continued. 'The writers… they put us through hell and high water over the last two years, but you know what? You and I… we are still here! Everybody left, but you and I… we are still here, and we are talking… without the writers!'
'David, there must be a point here somewhere… can you get to it already!?'
'The point is… we never got to talk on the show. We were supposed to get together tonight and talk about our relationship… at the restaurant at that hotel you were staying at… remember? But the script was never written. So, I'm asking you now... can we talk? Can we take a moment and say what we want to say… not what's been written for us?'
She nodded her head, yes. 'Let's talk,' she said softly.
'First, we need to find a place to sit down.' David searched the area for a place where they could go. 'Maddie look, over here.' He took her by the elbow and pulled her to where there was a small wrought iron bench in a shaded area overlooking a beautiful flower garden on the church grounds. He sat her down and then sat down beside her. It was a good thing because he started to feel dizzy.
David was completely overwhelmed by emotion as the events of the day all started taking their toll on him. He felt like he was in a spin cycle… like he needed to slow down. His chest hurt he was so anxious. He began breathing in through his nose and out through his mouth, making it difficult for him to speak. He really didn't want her to see how nervous he was.
'David, if you have something to say...' Maddie looked over at him, and saw that he was struggling. 'Hey, c'mere, everything's gonna be okay,' she said, trying to soothe him. She wrapped her arms around him, resting her chin on his shoulder. She stayed like that, holding him close.
In a soft voice, just barely above a whisper, she said, 'David, I know I told you once that you were not the man I was supposed to be with, but you are... you are.' She slowly ran her hand up and down his back in a comforting gesture. 'I love you, David.' She pulled back to look deep into his green eyes. 'I need you.' She kissed his forehead. 'I want you.' She kissed his cheek, and gave him a loving smile. 'Feel better?' she asked him, gently rubbing his forearm.
'Yeah, I, uh, I started to feel like my heart was gonna beat straight outta my chest.' David let out an embarrassed chuckle. 'For a moment there, I thought you were going to have to call for an ambulance.'
'It's okay, I understand. Why does it have to be so damn hard to tell someone how you feel?'
'I don't know, but I need to do it. I just hope it's what you need to hear.'
'David, please don't think you need to talk about Annie. I know that was just the writers trying to stir up drama. That behavior was so out of character for you, I knew something was off.'
He felt thankful she said those words to him. It helped to put him at ease. 'Yeah, must've been a new writer or something. That storyline was awful. No wonder we got canceled.'
'Yeah.'
They sat quietly for a minute. The two of them… so deep in thought.
David took a breath and he reached for her hand, placing his other hand on top of hers. 'Maddie, I love you; you know I do. But I feel like telling you that has never been enough.'
She felt guilty almost. She swallowed the lump in her throat, and looked down, not at all happy with herself for making him feel that way. But he was right.
'I think maybe you worry about what kind of life I could give you. You want me to tell you where the relationship is going. I'm not a soothsayer; I can't predict the future.'
'I know that.'
'But I can tell you what kind of life I'd like us to have.'
'Tell me.' She squeezed his hand.
He looked off in the distance… not at anything in particular, but like he was picturing in his mind what could be.
'Well... I can see us living in a big city… doesn't have to be L.A., the city doesn't matter… nice, safe part of town... comfortable apartment.' He turned to look at her. 'I'd love to have one of those balconies, you know, so you and I can sit outside at night… and watch the sunset. Every morning, I tell you that I love you… and every night we make love.'
'Every night, huh?'
'Wishful thinking?'
'Go on.' She smiled.
He smirked, and affectionately patted her thigh.
'Okay… maybe we work together, maybe we don't... maybe someday we get married... if we have a kid, we'll be a family of three... if we don't, we'll be a family of two, but either way, I love my family with all my heart... I work really hard to be a man you can be proud of... and you... you have faith in me.'
Maddie was left speechless by his words. They were... simply everything.
He reached up to wipe a single tear as it left a wet trail down her cheek. It was a tear of happiness.
'David Addison!' She moved her hand to the back of his neck and pressed her forehead against his. 'For so long I wondered, what am I gonna do with you!' she asserted. 'But now I know… thank you for telling me.' She pulled him close so she could kiss his mouth.
David ran his hand through her hair, sliding his fingertips around her ear to tuck a stray tendril of blonde curls.
'David, can you say that last part to me again?'
'Which part?'
'The last part… look me in the eye, and tell me…' she prodded him.
'What? That you have faith in me?'
'Yeah, that's what you really want, right?'
'Yeah…'
Maddie moved her hand to cup the side of his face. 'David, I love you, and I need you to know… that I do have faith in you… I do believe in you... in us. I know that you will always be there for me.'
'I promise you, I will.' He kissed her on the lips to seal the deal.
David laughed he was so happy, and Maddie laughed, and all the stress of the day left their bodies.
'And just so I'm clear, this all means that if tomorrow you get invited to a wedding, I'm your "plus 1", right? Like, you're not going to ask me. It's just automatic.'
'Yes, that's exactly what it means, David… provided you can get a dress shirt that's not missing any buttons. Though, I have to admit, I do appreciate this scruffy action hero look.' Maddie ruffled the chest hair peeking out from the top of his white undershirt and then ran her fingers down his chest to just above his belt buckle.
'Good. So, uh, not to change the subject, but... have you given any thought to where we may want to live? It's not like we have your house or my apartment to go to. Those were just sets built for the show.'
'You're right... I didn't think about that.'
'Are you dead set on staying out here in L.A.?'
'No, I'm definitely open to a change.'
'Chicago? We could go stay with your parents for a while in the Windy City. Philly? Take a crack at the Liberty Bell? Nah, on second thought, my father might try to crack the whip at me. How 'bout New York? Take a bite outta the Big Apple?'
Maddie perked up. 'New York City?'
'Yeah, why not? We've both lived there before. We could look for an apartment, get jobs. Build a life there…'
'You and me? Living together in New York City?'
'If you're in, I'm in.'
Looking around, Maddie commented, 'We've got nothing keeping us here.'
'We could leave right now.'
'Together, right?'
'You and me.' David nodded his head firmly and in total agreement. 'Always together. Count on it.'
David pulled her in close, kissing her cheek and the side of her mouth, before wrapping her up in his arms.
'I love you, Maddie Hayes.'
'I love you, too.'
'Then take this chance and come with me.'
She pulled back and looked into his eyes.
'New York City, huh? With David Addison… this ought to be interesting.'
'That's right, Ms. Hayes… you're catching on. Interesting, spontaneous, fun… and fine. We can definitely throw some fine in there, too.'
Just then, a car, or more specifically, a '67 black Corvette convertible pulled up and parked on the street in front of them. A young man hopped out and said, 'Mr. Addison, should I leave the key in the ignition?'
'Yes, that's fine, thank you, Ryan. You can just leave it running.' He turned to look at Maddie, and smiled. 'We're leaving in a minute.'
'No problem, Mr. Addison.' Ryan removed his baseball cap and nodded a greeting to Maddie, 'Ms. Hayes,' he said. Then he took off running down the street.
'What's that?' Maddie asked.
'That… is my car. Remember, it's what I drive when we're on hiatus? Where's your car?'
'My car? Oh, I wasn't using my car. Gave it to my parents.'
'Oh, so it looks like I'm your ride then.'
'Looks that way.'
'C'mon, babe, let's get outta here. We've got a lot of drivin' to do.'
David wrapped his arm around Maddie's waist and started walking her towards the car.
'Hey, Maddie! Speaking of New York, I just thought of this great idea for a new TV show. "Subway Station". You get it? "Subway Station". Kind of romantic. Kind of exotic. People come to the Subway from all over the Tri-State area. You got your Brooklynites, your Long Islanders, your New Jerseyans… all taking the underground railway to exciting places.'
David is very excited. He starts snapping his fingers, thinking how he can embellish his new idea. 'We need a young, good-lookin' guy to play the conductor… hey, that could be me, right? And you… you could play the hot blonde who rides the train to work every day. And she has a mad crush on the handsome conductor. I don't know about you… but I love it.'
'David, you're not going to sing, are you?' Did she really think he wouldn't?
"Subway… all shiny and new… come aboard… we're expecting you…"
'So, what do you think? Great idea, huh?'
Maddie just smiled at him, and started walking around to the passenger side of the car. He skipped ahead and opened the door for her. He then went around to let himself in on the other side. As they drove away with the top rolled down, David turned on the radio and the beginning chords of "Have A Little Faith In Me" could be heard coming from the car stereo.
THE END
A/N: I love the song, "Have A Little Faith In Me" by John Hiatt, and I thought the lyrics worked really well for Maddie and David. I can picture them driving off into the sunset with that song playing. I think of Maddie when I read the lyric, "When your secret heart cannot speak so easily." I think Maddie had such strong feelings for David, but she always had to be in control and wouldn't let herself be vulnerable with him. And I think of David when I read the lyric, "Cause I've been loving you for such a long time, baby, expecting nothing in return, just for you to have a little faith in me." I feel like David wanted so badly for Maddie to believe in him and to have faith in their relationship.
That's why I wrote this story. I hope you like it. Please leave a review. Thank you!
