Chapter 22 (1,8K)

NOT EDITED, DON'T COME AT ME! ENJOY OR DON'T READ ^^

From afar, Jack watched Ana talk with Elena as the older woman was making introductions and laughing at whatever Ana retorted. Something seemed off about their interaction, but he couldn't quite tell what it was yet. He sipped on his juice, idly wondering if he should have asked Christian to be the designated driver.

Though Christian liked to dance, he was far from being a social butterfly, sober or drunk. Whereas Jack liked to be amongst people. So maybe he should have used the opportunity to have the buzz of alcohol in addition of the general good mood around them.

He felt, rather than saw, Christian's presence next to him, and before Christian even said a word, he knew that something was bothering him. Though Christian didn't even try to hide what it was,

"That's the fucker."

"What fucker?"

"The one she met at a bar and with whom she went on a date," Christian grumbled, sipping on his champagne and Jack tried to reason him,

"You don't know that."

"Yes, I do."

Jack observed the scene as Ana openly laughed, throwing her head back and touching the man's bicep as his eyes looked at her, apparently proud of whatever he just said that made her laugh. And he had to concede to Christian, everything in their body language indicated that they knew each other and that they were comfortable enough to touch each other.

Jack turned to Christian who was still looking at the three of them, before he put his glass down and picked up another glass of champagne. Then he walked straight to Ana, a loving smile plastered on his face and Jack also got closer, knowing Christian's temper and jealousy. No matter how antisocial Christian was, he had never been afraid to make a scene and Jack knew that Ana wouldn't necessarily appreciate that at her place of work.

"Babe, I got you a drink," he said, possessively wrapping his arm around her waist as he kissed her temple and made it obvious to everyone that they were together.

Ana rose an eyebrow at him before quickly glancing at Jack, and for the brief second their eyes locked, Jack knew that she and him were thinking of the same thing. This was the first time that Christian was using an endearing name to refer to her. Even to Jack, Christian had never done that before. He wasn't much of a romantic with words.

Still, Ana smiled at Christian and she made the presentations as Elena excused herself to go see someone else.

"Taylor, this is my boyfriend, Christian Grey. Christian, this is my friend, Jason Taylor. But he prefers to go by his last name. Why is that, by the way?"

"It's actually my second name. My Mom always called me by it because it was the name she chose for me. And when I tried to make it on my own, many people still opened doors for me because of the name Lincoln. So I changed my last name for Taylor, but still asked people I care about to call me Taylor."

Ana nodded with understanding and Jack couldn't help but notice that, even though there was no animosity from Taylor, there was plenty emanating from Christian. It was so obvious that Elliott suddenly popped next to Jack, glaring at Christian as he asked in a whisper to Jack, "What's up with Christian?"

"He can be quite jealous sometimes. And it seems that Ana went on a date with Elena's son a few months ago," Jack shrugged.

He recalled how he and Christian had a big argument around that time. Christian didn't like that he couldn't be completely truthful to Ana and that the fact that they had to wait for the end of the school year meant that she could fall for some other guy.

In hindsight, Jack didn't know how he would have felt if they had lost Ana before even having had the chance to have her. He couldn't imagine his life without her as of now, and he didn't want to think of anything that could have come between Ana and them. Jason Taylor was someone that easily could have been a problem if he had played his cards right.

He felt Elliott tense next to him, and when he looked at Ana's brother, he saw how his jaw was clenched and the clear hesitation to go and put himself between Christian and Ana. So he reassured him,

"It's not toxic jealousy, Elliott. It's just … Christian doesn't like people getting too close to the ones he loves. At best, it's over-protectiveness, at worst it's insecurity. But it's not something toxic and controlling."

"How would you know?"

"Because he's been doing the same to me every year when I bring him to work functions. If you knew the number of students, male or female, that try to get in my pants. It gets on his nerves."

Elliott chuckled at the light tone Jack used before he frowned and completely looked at the blond man, "I thought you didn't get with Ana before her graduation. That's what she said."

Even though he was Ana's brother who was obviously not comfortable picturing his sister as anything but his sister, Jack couldn't help but chuckle and wiggle his eyebrows at the last sentence Elliott used. He blamed that on the fact that he spent too much time around late teens and young adults. Some of their crude humour was bound to sip into him.

Elliott rolled his eyes, still waiting for his answer, and Jack let him know with seriousness, "I don't date students."

Elliott nodded, reporting his attention to the trio who had moved a bit, so they could be more recluse from the party and talk amongst them. As he saw that the tension did not dissipate, Jack excused himself from Elliott and went to his lovers, understanding as he got closer that the tension had shifted from Christian and Taylor to Ana and Taylor,

"You never told me that your mother was Elena. It's not like I never told you I was working with a boss-ass lady."

"To be fair, you never said her name or the name of her company. And the way you talked about her … I was picturing someone younger."

"Well, that ought to make her happy."

Taylor sighed, glancing at Jack as he positioned himself next to Ana and he explained, "I'm not big on nepotism, unlike my Mom. I do my best to not be attached to her wealth in any way, shape or form. That's why I rarely talk about her."

"And that's why you accused me of being a gold digging whore on our first date?"

Jack's ears perked at that, not liking how those words were assembled. Ana never told them about any of this. Just that the date was far from being ideal. He saw how Christian remained impassible, but he couldn't believe that anyone would think that Ana was a gold digger. Ana was too independent to be considered as such. She already made a fuss because people were helping her with her broken leg.

Jack opened his mouth, to ask clarification about this whole gold-digging situation, but Ana shook her head, apparently not that bothered by the insult.

Taylor observed the slight exchange, before he asked, "So … this isn't a monogamous relationship you have."

"No. This is a loving relationship."

He nodded with a smile, letting her know, "Well, good thing we never got together, after all. I am too jealous to share."

A few weeks later, Jack came home to Ana grumbling into her phone, threatening Elliott with the promise of never visiting him again. He didn't pay much attention to it and went straight to the kitchen to kiss Christian good evening.

Ever since Christmas, Ana was persuaded that Elliott was seeing someone and she was doing her best to get the information out of him. But Elliott was denying the whole thing, saying that she was delusional. Neither Christian nor Jack got involved in that conversation, letting the siblings solve their issue on their own. Though Jack did let Christian know of his own suspicions concerning Elliott's love life.

"I was thinking going to Hawaï next weekend," Christian mindlessly said, swatting Jack's hand away when Jack tried to steal a bite of the food he was preparing.

"Oh?"

"Yes. It'll be Valentine's Day, so we could spend it there. And none of you will be able to say I'm not romantic. And we can also use the opportunity to celebrate Ana's big promotion."

Jack smiled, wrapping his arms around Christian to embrace him as he lovingly kissed his neck. They had celebrated Ana's freedom from her cast a couple of weeks after New Year (to Ana's greatest pleasure) and Jack had been hinting that he wanted a weekend getaway ever since.

But between their three jobs, it had not been easy to organise. Especially after Ana had a promotion she was quite proud of, though she tried to play humble by saying that it wasn't only due to her skills and capacities, but also because she was so close to Elena.

"So, I finally got her name," Ana smugly said, coming to the kitchen and kissing both Jack and Christian on their cheeks. "It's Sophia."

Christian chuckled at Ana's tenacity whilst Jack started dressing the table, pointing out, "Weren't you the one who didn't want to tell your brother straight up about us? And now you're forcing him to tell you about his love life?"

She grimaced, aught in her own double standards before she tried to argue for herself, "To be fair, I did tell him that there was something going on. And I'm pretty sure this has been going on for a while. I didn't keep him out of the loop for that long."

"I don't think so. She's pretty young," Jack mindlessly said before biting his lip at his slip up.

Ana squinted her eyes at him as Christian muttered under his breath,

"We're never going to go to Hawaï."

"How young is young?"

"I don't know. I mean, you know, I've just seen her briefly. I probably didn't look at her properly."

Ana kept staring until Jack admitted, "Maybe eighteen, I'm not sure. I didn't ask for an ID."

Ana shook her head, trying to convince herself as much as the guys, "Elliott would never date a minor. He's too scared of the law for that. She obviously just looks good for whatever age she really is."
