Clara was adopted by the Smith family when her capsule landed in their garden when she was a baby. They later found out that Clara possessed superpowers that she hadn't yet mastered.
Rick keeps Clara's capsule to experiment with Kryptonian technology to improve his devices.
Clara loves her adoptive family very much and respects her very much except Jerry who she does not hesitate to use her laser eyes on her adoptive father.
