I wake up in the middle of the night to a loud crash that came from downstairs. I shoot out of bed and rush downstairs to find a stranger standing over my father. I get ready to fight the stranger just as my mom comes downstairs and shoves me back towards the stairs before running at the stranger.
"Mom!" I call out.
"Go! Skylar! Go!" she screams at me as she attacks the stranger.
I start to head upstairs when I hear my mom scream. I turn back around and run towards the living room. I peek around the doorway and see the stranger had beheaded my father. He was about to do the same thing to my mom as he had her by the throat.
Without thinking, I launch a fire attack at the stranger and see him turn his attention towards me.
Shit.
The man's hand forms into a gun and he holds it to my mom's head.
"Get out of here or you're next little girl," the man says in a low, raspy voice.
I look at my mom and she nods. I knew I needed to go. I couldn't look back. I needed to save myself. I turn around and grab my emergency bag and head out the door just as I hear a gunshot. I stand on the porch and squeeze my eyes shut.
I open my eyes and walk down the stairs. I turn around and look at my house before launching a fire stream at it, engulfing it in flames. I turn back around and head down the street to my boyfriend's house.
I approach his house and knock on the door as loudly as I can until someone answers. The door opens and I find Ren standing on the other side.
"Sky? What are you doing here so la—," he says and notices my emergency bag next to me. "Get in here."
Ren pulls me inside and locks the door after closing it then hugs me tight.
"Ren? Who was that?" his mom asks as she comes downstairs. "Oh, hi Skylar."
"What happened?" Ren asks as he pulls back, ignoring his mom.
"Someone broke into my house and killed my parents," I mumble, reality starting to hit me.
"Oh, sweetie. I'm so sorry," Ren's mom says to me.
"Did you call the cops?" he asks.
"It's fine," I mumble to his mom. "No. I doubt he got out. They'll be there soon enough."
"What do you mean?" Ren's mom asks.
"I set the house on fire," I say plainly.
"Why would you do that?!" Ren exclaims.
"Ren, that's what my parents told me to do if something like this ever happened," I snap.
"Come on, let's go to bed," he mumbles and the three of us go upstairs.
*The next day*
I wake up the next morning in Ren's arms and extremely numb to any sort of emotion. I take his arms off me and get up and head downstairs. After I take the last step there's a knock on the door. I open it and find my older brother with the police on the other side.
"Skylar!" Derek exclaims and pulls me into a hug. "Thank God you're okay!"
"I'm fine," I mumble and push him away.
"We need you to come down to the station for questioning," one of the officers say.
"Hello Derek," Ren's mom says to my brother. "Go ahead Skyalr. I'll let Ren know."
I nod and walk out of their house with Derek and the police. We got into a police car and were taken to the station downtown. They lead me to an interrogation room and close the door.
"Now Miss Hayami. We need you to tell us what happened last night," the second officer says.
"I was woken up by crashing coming from downstairs so I went to investigate and found a man standing over my father. My mom then comes downstairs and tells me to leave. I grab my emergency bag and walk out of the house. As soon as I closed the door there was a gunshot and blood spattered onto the window," I explain.
"How was the house set on fire?" the first cop asks.
"I did it. My parents told me and Derek that's what we should do if something like that ever happened. I just did what I was told," I say and feel tears start to form in my eyes.
"You're not in trouble Miss Hayami. We just needed to know what happened. Thank you. The man that killed your parents was found burned to death inside," the second officer tells me and Derek.
"Thank you," Derek says and we both walk out of the room. We get to Derek's car and start driving back to Ren's house.
"You're going to be living with Aunt Inko and Izuku in Musutafu. You leave tonight so say goodbye to Ren. I know you don't want to leave, but I legally get custody of you now and I'm going out of country for business," he says plainly.
"Why can't I stay with Sarah and Kenji?" I ask. "Why do I have to go to another city?"
"Sarah and Kenji are coming with me. I'm sorry Skylar," he says sincerely.
"Whatever," I mumble and get out of the car and walk into Ren's house.
