I discovered this Netflix show around a week ago and fell madly in love with it. I've tried finding fanfiction for it everywhere, and there are only a couple of writers that actually provide me with precious Nam On Jo/ Lee Cheong San content. So, guess I'm gonna have to provide for myself then.
Also, warning, I don't like reviewing and editing my work and I don't know anything about the Korean language. So buyers beware.
Chapter One: Origin
On Jo knew it was coming, but it didn't ease the pain any.
"Hyeon-Ju!?" She shouted, trying to snatch her hand back before Hyeon-Ju's teeth punctured the soft skin in her wrist. Shooting pain shot up her arm, and On Jo cradled her injured limb to her chest.
"On Jo, are you okay?" I-sak asked, seeing her best friend's frightened expression.
"She bit me," On Jo responded, dazed. She knew that Hyeon-Ju must've been delirious and panicked after being kidnapped and drugged by the science teacher, so she couldn't find it in herself to be angry at the situation. After all, she volunteered to help bring Hyeon-Ju to the nurse's office.
"I'll take a look at that later," the nurse promised after they successfully sedated the injured high schooler. She sustained a similar injury to the forearm but was willing to ignore the pain until after the paramedics arrived.
"I-sak, thank you for your assistance, but you should be able to return back to class now," Park-ssaem told On Jo's best friend. "The paramedics should be arriving soon, so we'll only need On Jo and Su-hyeok to help carry her downstairs."
"You're welcome, Park-ssaem. I hope that Hyeon-Ju gets better," I-sak responded. She squeezed On Jo's hand in reassurance and then left the nurse's office.
Sure enough, it took less than ten minutes for the paramedics to arrive, and On Jo was relieved to see her father arrive. Su-hyeok and On-Jo assisted in carrying the subdued Hyeon-Ju down the school stairs and On Jo willingly allowed her dad to pull her aside to bandage the wound on her wrist.
"Does it hurt very much?" Nam So-ju asked, cringing at the angry, red bite mark.
"Of course, it does," On Jo pouted, irritated at her dad's obvious questions.
"Fortunately, it doesn't look like she punctured anything too important. Make sure not to get it wet and call me if it becomes unbearable", her father instructed her. He then handed her an aspirin, "This should help with the pain. I need to rush, now, but remember to call me if it gets any worse."
"Okay," On Jo reassured her, and hurried him away to the hospital.
On Jo and Su-hyeok watched the emergency vehicle exit through the school grounds and promised Park-ssaem not to spread any rumors about what happened to any other classmates.
"Did she really bite you?" Su-hyeok asked while they ventured up the school stairs back to their classroom.
"Yes," On Jo admitted. "I think that she accidentally did it when she was flailing." It didn't feel right to accuse Hyeon-Ju of purposely injuring her after such a traumatic event. Even if On Jo clearly saw her lunge towards her with bared teeth and an ugly snarl.
"I don't know. I saw her trying to bite everyone who put their hands near her, but I can't blame her after everything she's been through" Su-hyeok sighed. "Hey, what did you want to tell me on the roof? I'm playing basketball after lunch, so it'll be better if you just tell me now."
Suddenly, it felt like her heart was going to burst out of her chest. The entire day she felt anxious to confess her admiration for Su-hyeok, and she wasn't entirely prepared to do so now. On Jo looked around to ensure that there were no witnesses, then took his hand and pressed her red name tag into Su-hyeok's palm.
"O-oh," Su-hyeok stuttered, his eyes widening. "So, this means…" On Jo nodded, keeping her eyes strictly glued to the floor.
"You aren't dating Cheong-san!?" Su-hyeok asked. On Jo immediately lifted her head up in surprise.
"No! We've been neighbors since we were children, and his mom sometimes gives us chicken. I like chicken, but I'm not into Cheong-san that way," On Jo cried.
As if summoned, Cheong-san came running down the stairs. "On Jo! I heard that you got hurt." He grabbed her hand to inspect the bandage. "Why do you have to be so reckless?"
"I'm fine!" On Jo argued, instantly embarrassed. It was no wonder everyone thought they were dating when he hovered around her like that. She trudged up the staircase, too humiliated and frustrated to wait for the guys.
On Jo collapsed into her usual seat next to I-sak and immediately rested her head against the table. Suddenly it felt like every single bit of energy was drained from her body. The wound in her wrist throbbed, and On Jo could both feel and hear her heartbeat slowing down.
"Hey, On Jo, are you okay?" On Jo could her I-sak's voice vaguely murmur.
"I don't know," On Jo replied, tiredly. Every word that left her lips felt like precious oxygen escaping her. "I just feel really tired, right now."
The lights blinded her, and no matter how tightly On Jo shut her eyes, she could not find any peace. She could hear her classmates whispering to one another, every word seemed as if were being communicated directly to her. Worse than the words were the echo of people's bodily functions. On Jo pressed her hands to her ears but couldn't find the strength to cover them tightly. She could hear someone swallowing and the gurgle of a person's stomach, and immediately felt sick.
The lunch bell rang, and On Jo flinched away from the overwhelming blaring. However, she was relieved when she heard all her classmates shuffle out of the room. She just wanted to be left alone!
"On Jo!" A voice she recognized above all others exclaimed. On Jo felt someone's hand lay on her shoulder, and for only a second, she was overcome with the feeling of comfort. "What happened to her?"
"I don't know, she just came in like this," I-sak responded, panic evident in her voice. "Do you think that the bite is infected?"
"There's no way it can get infected this early on," someone said matter-of-factly. On Jo didn't recognize the deadpan, feminine voice.
"Well, there's obviously something wrong with her!" Cheong-san argued fiercely. "Why are you here anyways, President? It's not like you ever bothered to care before."
There was a pause, and On Jo felt momentarily surprised at Cheong-san's tone. He would typically never dream of speaking to another person so rudely.
"Fine, I'll just leave then," Nam-ra responded, and On-Jo could hear her footsteps fading.
"Cheong-san! What's wrong with you!" On Jo heard a different voice seethe, recognizing it as Su-hyeok. She could hear Su-hyeok follow Nam-ra out, and On Jo dimly felt the pain of abandonment. She confessed not even ten minutes ago, and he didn't even care about her obvious illness!
"On Jo, come on, I'm going to get you to the infirmary," Cheong-san soothed. She felt his arm around her waist but lifting herself felt impossible. "I-sak, help me."
As soon as On-Jo felt Cheong-san jar her from her position, everything went black.
When Cheong-san moved to pull On Jo up her seat, her entire body went limp. Despite his attempt to clasp her, On Jo slid out of her grip and landed squarely on the classroom floor.
Cheong-san and I-sak briefly paused what they were doing in panic. The two people who cared for On Jo more than anyone else in school could hardly fathom what to do next.
I watched a ton of YouTube videos on this show and read more than enough articles to see that people are fascinated at the idea of Nam On Jo being "immune" or the first "hambie" since the show didn't go into too much detail after On Jo was injured by Hyeon-Ju. Therefore, I thought that this would be a really interesting concept to write about, and here I am.
I would love to hear more from other fans of this show, so please review below! It may even prompt me to update faster!
