The sound of the bell surrounded the whole building. With a confident step, the young girl with colorful glasses, blond hair which were tied into a high bun, and those bright brown eyes, walked through the school corridor. She wasn't happy, not at all, she was angry, furious. Her sneakers bumped into the floor with a loud sound, just to stop by one of the break benches, looking down rather than laying their figure. She crossed her arms in annoyance, her brows almost covering her eyes, twitching every time said figure made even one move. Eventually, she grew tired, waiting for anything from this person, and she started the conversation.
"Are you satisfied now?!" Her voice harshly exclaimed. She focused her sight onto her now messy red hair, towards her face, showing her disgust towards it. "James! Are you even listening to me!"
"I do! I...do. Just...give me a minute." Said the boy closing his eyes, in a way to rest a little, almost falling asleep as he did it. His peaceful moment was destroyed, by impact straight into his head. He flinched at it, straighten up, now looking for a culprit, just to meet eye-to-eye with a still upset girl. He started massaging the place of impact. "Seriously?! How many times do I have to apologize!"
"Until I hear that! If I won't, you will have to get used to my new side then!"
"That isn't your normal state?!"
Noticing his mistake, which led only to making her more peeved, he instantly throw his arms around his head, avoiding any pain from her. She breathed loudly. "James. You have one minute to explain yourself." Her eyes looked at his, like a predator over its prey.
James closed his eyes in fright. "Okay! I'm sorry Sarah! I didn't mean to get that drunk!"
"Seriously?! This is the least you could have told me now!"
"Did we hear that clear Belch?" From the corner emerge one head, very well known by those two.
Just by it, another made its way. "As a matter of fact, Barf. Magnificent and gorgeous yelling of our beautiful friend Stormfly, against her silly boyfriend."
"You got popcorn?"
"Of course, Barf."
Both of them got closer to them, sitting by the same bench Hookfang sat at, but at a distance so they could watch the whole chaos from safety. One of them took his backpack out, from which he took almost a whole package of said popcorn. Starting eating, the second one waved his hand in a way showing them to continue. Sarah looked at them, murder glare not leaving their bodies. James took his sight from her to them, then from them to her, repeating that faster and faster.
"I always loved their arguments, brother."
"As well as me, brother. It's just such dignified!"
"A large boy, which probably would be proud of his amazing skill of fighting-"
"Being defeated by his girlfriend, in her average body."
James, really quietly, opened his mouth, then like a squeal words came from his mouth. "In my defense, she isn't such average, she knows how to fight."
With almost thoughtful minds, the brothers continued. "That's a fact, my dear brother."
"Our wonderful Stormfly isn't skinny, she might show some of her strength in here."
James could only flinch in fear, seeing the girl before him getting redder and redder. Her breathing getting louder and louder. Her palms were already in fists. "Am I interrupting something?!" She shouted as loudly as quietly, harsh not leaving her mouth.
"Not at all, my dear. You might continue." Seeing hers now madness in eyes, which likely brighten red fire, he was just confused. "Huh, I think the program had broken."
"Right, I noticed that as well. Sarah doesn't yell at all. Such dissatisfaction."
Just then, she snapped. With all hers, as they said wonderfulness, she made a swift move of the hand, and her fist landed at the eye of Belch. Afterward, she kicked another brother off the bench, which instinctively get hold of another one, actually sending both of them toward the ground. Stormfly's head turned immediately in direction of her boyfriend, now smiling awkwardly and innocently.
"I love you?"
She just snored loudly, rolling her eyes in meantime. "How could I even let you alone at that party-" Her head back onto its position, staring at two figures on the ground. "-with those two around!"
Barf gasped, offended. His arm relies on his brother's head. "We didn't do anything!"
"Exactly!" Belch forcefully took his arm, sending him onto the ground just by his side. "He had his free will!"
"You jerks! Do you even know how many problems I had because of it?! I had to take care of his vomiting for the whole night! What have you ever thought?!"
"We just wanted to make a little test!"
"You know Sarah, we were wondering what would have happened when humans drank beer, wine, and vodka. At the same time!"
Sarah facepalmed, her palm sliding through her whole face. "Idiots, just idiots." Without even turning she shouted at the boy behind her back. "James! Do you even have a brain?! Any self-control?!"
"They gave me 10 dollars! It seemed worth it!" Stormfly pulled her palm in his direction, still turned from him. He sighed loudly and took it from his pocket green papers. Putting them onto her hold, he saddened. "Now, it wasn't that worth it."
"And remember that!" Her sight went toward the ground, she started massaging her scalp. "There wasn't anyone responsible around you?! Anyone?!"
Both twins, now sitting upright looked up at her. Barf fold his palms like he was about to say something smart, but he didn't, as always anyway. "Unfortunately, there wasn't anyone. At that moment, I was the smartest one."
"Mister 'I'm responsible and boring' Night, wasn't there fortunately for us."
"Seriously?! Nobody of your friends Hookfang has mobility of using brain-! Wait." She stopped here and turned her body completely in James's direction. "Tobias wasn't there?"
"Obviously. You think why I had to drive both you and Meatlug?"
"I thought you were being nice!"
Both twins snarled, then giggled, then laughed. "James and nice in one sentence! You heard that Barf!"
"Yeah. That would be something!" Theirs laughs continued.
Sarah crossed her arms, still turned to them by the back. "You know James, I'm starting to understand Tobias, why he is such cold and emotionless towards these guys." She sighed, she thought yet again focused on the theme. "You told me you would talk with him!" She directed her sight toward her boyfriend.
"I did!"
"And?"
"And he said he was busy... working."
"Thor... Hookfang! You should talk more! Someone has to knock some sense into that brain of his! He's overworking himself! Poor boy."
Laughs behind her back got louder, at these, she could only gnarl. "Toothless poor! That's even more hilarious! Storm, he was working for 18 years nonstop! Whole life-saving money. Even inherited from his parents much!"
"He's not even close to that word. Even so, he is still working like he was on the red line, dept over his head!"
"I didn't mean that in that way!" She sighed, it was beyond hers thinking how much air she was getting from her while talking with these guys. "Look Hookfang, you're probably the closest to him, that's something! Talk with him."
"I will try, but you know that's not that easy!"
"At least try!" She went forward to him, placing a short, but rough kiss on his cheek, then she turned and made herself towards another part of the corridor. "See you later."
Hookfang's smirk grew wider. "I love you!" He shouted at almost the whole corridor.
Sarah was used to such embarrassment and just waved him forcefully, nodding. "Yea, yea. Me too."
"Today's date is available, right?! You wouldn't refuse such a boy as me!"
"You are lucky, I didn't strangle you!"
He smiled lovely alike, both twins stood at each of his sides. "She didn't say yes." Barf looked at him disgusted.
"Neither way, she didn't say no. I'm still worthy!" James throws his arms upright.
Belch pulled out his tongue outside. "Gross!"
Barf just patted James on the back. "At least, for now." Then both twins laughed at Hookfang, which now looked at them annoyed, rolling eyes on them.
"Where captain is actually?"
James raised his head at a question one of his mates asked. He didn't notice his friend's disappearance, now ashamed about it. He was focused on dressing himself, forgetting about his surroundings. Team cabinet. His ice skaters were now hurting his ankles, his helmet just by the side of his leg, ready for wearing it on. Looking around, unknown his reason, everyone looked directly at him, almost everyone had their face sinking with confusion, sending him glares asking alike.
"Don't look at me, I'm not his mother or something?" James pulled his arm, likely defending himself from their hard questioning.
"But then, from all of us, you both are closest." The boy known by him as Sleuther bitted his lip in worry.
He sighed. "Truth is, even for that, that man is for me an unexplainable riddle."
"Riddle? But, like the Riddler?" Belch glanced at them, from between gathered people, still sitting by his bench, preparing himself.
Barf shook his head, his palm patted the back of another one. "No, no. With his sense of humor? He's too serious for such a thing."
"Yeah, he might be Batman."
"Well, but Batman has a girlfriend at last."
"They never closing their mouths?" A boy rather tall and skinny, which stood close to Hookfang glanced at them with annoyance, crossing his arms. "Seriously guys, where is that asshole? He's always first at cabinets."
"Don't be such harsh on him, Torch. Maybe, he's just being late?" Boy twice another one size smaller exclaimed, same as Sleuther worried, but yet optimistic.
"Sharpshot is right. I saw Tobias today in class. He looked rather tiredly, even more, he looked exhausted, lifeless."
Torch snarled. "Isn't that his casual? I mean, he's such bossy sometimes, not saying nothing about his emotionlessness."
"That guy was worse, comparative to how he behaves on basic."
James sighed and glanced at the talking boys. Without hiding his thoughts, he asked. "What do you think happened?"
"He probably overworked himself finally. It was obvious he would someday." The torch started, not hiding his discouragement towards said, Tobias.
"That's possible. But then, I think that it had something to do with yesterday's weather. Maybe, he's just sick." Sleuther exclaimed his position on the theme, his thoughtful eyes focused on the ceiling like he was seeing an answer in it.
"Yesterday was a party. Maybe, he's just hungover?" At those words of little Sharpshot, everyone looked around each other, just to burst into loudly laughing. One of the twins, Belch exactly, ended onto the ground, hugging his stomach.
Torch had wet eyes from tears of laughter. "That was a good one!"
Barf called after everyone, calming their outburst down. "Guys! I have an idea!" There were murmurs and sighs, but even so, he continued. "Maybe, he was changed into a zombie!"
There were facepalms and rolling of eyes. His brother nodded and agreed. Seeing another one's reaction, he turned to them, rather offended. "It's more possible that he is a hangover, isn't that right?"
"Okay! We get it!" Sleuther eventually snapped, looking annoyed by everyone, which agreed with the twins. Just then, he turned his sight towards James. "You don't know anything?"
"I don't have anything to hide. I don't know."
"Trainer Cloudjumper is going probably be furious at him for missing training. Are you sure you don't know nothing?"
"Hey! I'm not that bad! I wouldn't use his lack of presence!" Everyone looked at him obviously, he snarled. "Okay! Maybe I would, but then, we all know Tobias. He won't do something he doesn't want, no matter how much you try to convince him. It's probably one of that times, who knows?" Everyone nodded understanding alike, going back into their basic preparation. James got stuck in his thoughts. But then, why he wouldn't come to the training he loved?
He yawned loudly. His eyes were closing uncomfortable and his steps were getting more unconscious. Even so, he didn't look much less excited, the opposite. For some reason, there was happiness streaming from his body. His corduroy Sherpa jacked was unbuttoned, showing his turtleneck underneath, even so, cold wasn't bothering him. Because of the upcoming spring, there wasn't that cold, giving him just a slight feeling of chilly air. He walked across streets, sun was getting lower, just so in a few hours change into a peaceful night. Finally, his eyes widen, and he breathed loudly in the way to calm himself, seeing his tarted he slowly rushed towards it. Hospital.
Going inside, he could notice the same corridors, rooms, and plastic benches, he saw not such a long time ago. For an unknown reason, his heart beat uncontrollably, he could feel it racing into his chest. He was nervous. Why he was nervous? He never is nervous?! But, there he is, shrinking in nervousness and getting only more and more jittery. Eventually, he was able to get to the reception, as instructed by Atali, he showed card alike objects to the worker who smiled at him and informed him about going into one of the farthest rooms at the edge of the corridor.
He rushed in direction of said place, but the truth was he didn't know what would have happened. Maybe, he indeed shouldn't be here? Yet, he wanted. He stood frozen just before the doors, his stare just like earlier, almost destroying it with his sight. He could go inside. But then, he wasn't so sure about it. Maybe, that card was just like a kind manner? Maybe, he wasn't supposed to use it at all? The truth was he shouldn't be here, it's not like he is someone towards that boy, just some stranger from the streets. Since when has he been overthinking like that?!
His dilemma passed at the familiar sound behind his back. "Good afternoon, mister Night." He turned, to see Atali, still clothed in her casual, yet he could tell, she was probably about to start her job. He smiled weakly at her.
"Good afternoon as well." He returned the favor rather unhappily, perfectly showing hers his distress. His eyes focused on the ground uncomfortably.
She smiled, not much surprised about his behavior. "First visit? Am I right? Even parents are having problems with them."
He raised his sight at her, looking rather surprised and confused. "Really?"
"Obviously. It's hard seeing the child in such distress. I'm sure it's not easier, even if you're for him stranger." She glanced at him, noticing that her words didn't give the effect she tried to accomplish, she continued. "Troublesome is also the first incoming. Adults almost always feel somewhere useless, and unnecessary, forgetting that it's not about logic, but about presence. Most importantly aren't those medications, or those treatments, but most closed ones. I saw countless of times the happiness of the child, which was delighted by his parents' return, much more than yet again the new amount of meds."
"But then, I'm no one close to him. I'm just... unknown him man, which found him into streets. Nothing more."
"I don't think so." He focused his eyes on her, and she glanced at him confidently, before turning her eyes towards doors, at whichever he did same. "Such infants aren't known by best possibilities, but then they're great at recognizing. It's not such easy to fool such a child, their instincts lead them toward their parents, because of which infants would without any problem recognize their mother by the end of labor. If you were a stranger to him, as you just said, he wouldn't be much pleased with spending time with you, and as I heard, he was indeed close to you."
"W-what is that supposed to mean... exactly?"
"It means, that boy accepted you, as someone important in his life." His eyes widen, he let unknown his breath of relief and smiled weakly at those doors. "Even so, he knew you for such a short amount of time, it was enough for him to bond with you. That's a great accomplishment, Tobias." She placed her palm on his shoulder, in a way showing her support. He nodded at her words, giving him much-needed confidence.
"Thank you, ma'am."
"Call me Atali. No formalities."
"Very well, Atali. I appreciate your support."
"I'm glad to hear." She smiled at him brightly. Her heart was sinking into happiness, seeing someone such young, caring for something such small. "Before we would get in, as I hope you would, I would ask one question." Noticing she got his attention, as he turned his head towards her, she asked. "About whose opinion do you care? Boy or viewers? Because I'm sure little Henry wouldn't mind even meeting with such a stranger as you." With that, she rushed forward, going straight towards the said room, leaving him alone.
His face calmed. She was right. Whose opinion he even cared about? He never actually cared about it. He glanced at those doors, confidence not leaving his face. He was going to see Hiccup. And he hoped he would like that neither as he. He last time took a deep breath, before pushing the door handle, leading towards his entrance into the room. He was blinded by the light of the bright white room, for a second there was the need of blinking his eyes furiously. Finally, getting used to the new situation, he was able to register his surroundings.
There were much of multiple devices. As he looked around, there was no one, which strangled him slightly. Not even one patient, not even one doctor, not even a nurse. He kept looking, showing him the opposite of his knowing. He noticed a little hospital bassinet and knew him pretty well. At first, he hesitated. Had he even permission? Then, rather strange now confidence came at him. He just wanted to see him, that's nothing wrong with it. He moved forward, his eyes following its target. When he was at a good distance, he was able to finally see him. Hiccup.
There was a little bundle inside, white swaddle blanket covered him almost completely leaving his head and his arms free. Tobias could say, said blank was too big for him, yet he couldn't argue over that, it was still just hospital equipment. At those tiny heads of his, there was a little beanie on his head. It had those red elements with black as well. He was sleeping. He couldn't say if it was peaceful or not, but it was delightful for him, seeing he could sleep without any risk. He looked exhausted and emaciated. His heart ached at that view, looking down he could only see a little boy, which just yesterday was crying against his chest. He could see the boy, which tired alike was begging for a little warmness. Even thinking about it broke his heart painfully.
"Poor boy, isn't he?" Just behind his back, there was the voice of Atali. He didn't even turn, his eyes remained on the little boy before him. He nodded, in way of hers seeing it, not hiding his sorrow for the boy.
"He is."
"He didn't deserve such treating."
"He never did."
He sighed loudly, even though his sight remained on Hiccup, his body turned slightly towards her. "How is he going?"
"Better, that's most important, yet it's not easy for him."
He turned his eyes finally at her but held his hand onto the bassinet, likely scared it would disappear. She already was wearing her work uniform, white lab coat, gloves, and a few more pieces of equipment. "What exactly?"
She looked at him troublesome, sighed sadly, and crossed her arms in a way to comfort herself. "Not even saying about that terrible hypothermia, he also was starved."
He glanced at him, focused on his now tiny in his eyes body, before directing his sight again at her. "Starved?"
"Terrible, isn't it?"
He didn't know what to think. He knew, actually. His parents would be murdered by him someday, he swear that. So heartless, so vicious. "Undoubtedly." He tightens his eyes, showing his pain over knowing it.
"Truth is, because of that, he has much of eating problems." Tobias looked at her asking alike, still stunned by what he just heard, much worriedly. "His little stomach isn't ready to eat too much, being used to eating only less and less. If I would give him too much, he would end up with stomach aches, which, with his state now, would be problematic. I have to keep giving him only a small amount of it, to slowly get his stomach used more and more. The most troublesome isn't even that, but because of his body's weaknesses, often half of what he ate, his body rejected, causing vomiting. As result, he not only gets small portions but also from them, only half is digested by him."
"That sounds horrible."
"Unfortunately it's all true, which we discovered just a few hours earlier."
"Shouldn't he stay in the hospital much longer despite it?"
"I'm sorry Tobias, but it's not my decision. Even so, Henry's time here is only lasting. I'm sorry, but I can't do much about it."
There were much of things he wanted to say. Scream. Shout. Beg. He didn't know what came at him, but an unknown him feeling of failure encircled him. He shouldn't have felt that way, everything he could do, was done already. But then, there must be more! "Atali what if I-"
Just then, there was sobbing which after a moment would change into crying. Hiccup. Tobias didn't even glance at Atali, in a way of asking for her permission. Instinctively, he rushed towards the place, he last time saw the sleeping boy. He looked over the hospital bassinet, and immediately his face calmed. Little body was struggling around, in a way to show his uncomfortableness. His eyes remained tightly shut, yet there was little water underneath them. Tobias winced at the view, yet knew he couldn't just remain here motionless.
"Hey, hey Hiccup. Hey, buddy." At first, Hiccup didn't react to that, but when Tobias pulled his palm towards him, accidentally Hiccup's trashing around hand got in touch with his thumb, actually a tip of it because of the size difference, at which touch he calmed, instinctively tight his grip onto it. He smiled brightly at such a way of the situation. "It's okay, it's okay. I'm here, buddy. It's fine."
He wouldn't even notice the sudden presence just behind his back. "Impressing." He slightly turned his head in her direction. Atali came closer, analyzing Hiccup's expression. His sight remained once blankly forward, not focusing on figures before him, once upright, upon the bright reflector, which seemed to interest him most. Eyes were likely black orbs, and since Atali didn't show any concern about that, Tobias neither, despised it as a normal infant thing. Hiccup held onto Tobias's finger, not showing signs of letting go. "It's not casual for him, being such calmed."
"What do you mean?"
She sighed, still focusing on little Hiccup. "Well, from stories told by my Co-worker, Hiccup isn't a peaceful sleeper. Despite it, he would often wake up suddenly, before his planned woke up. For his age, he's supposed to sleep much more. He's waking up about one hour too early, even now."
Tobias focused his gaze on him, worry not leaving his face even for a mere moment. "What could have caused that?"
"Much things. Maybe pain, lack of comfort, fright."
"There isn't a way for you to help him with that?"
"I think there isn't-"
"Maybe, he is just hungry?"
"He ate about an hour ago. Even so, I can't let him eat more. That would cause harm, rather than solvent."
"T-then, he maybe needs to be changed?"
"He was changed before going to sleep, I'm sure it isn't-"
"C'mon Atali! T-there must be s-something!" Atali noticed his distress, fully aware that said young man was indeed worried.
"Let me finish, please." Tobias's sight which never let go of Hiccup remained still. In this place, he nodded slightly and stood shut. "I think, there is nothing, that I can do. But, there is something, you can do." His eyes widen, swiftly turned his head towards her, showing his agreement over anything. "Wouldn't you want to rock him into needed sleep?"
Tobias's sight went from Atali to Hiccup, then from him to her, surprised by her suggestion. "Well... if that would help... I don't mind-"
"Very well! Then, get yourself onto work!" She shouted rather harshly, but he could feel irony in it. Just then, she stood up, went towards the door, and before closing them, hiding behind it, she showed him her thumbs. As he thought, he could only get to the conclusion that she wanted to leave them on their own, in peace. Strange woman.
He looked at his charge now, still holding onto his finger. "I guess it's just you and me now?" He took his palm from him, because of which Hiccup lost grip on his finger, instantly pulling his arm in search of it. Before Hiccup could go feral, because of lack of contact, Tobias pulled to him both his arms, taking him against his chest, as he had a chance to do so already. Hiccup was comfortably situated in his arms, Tobias thought, it wasn't the best position for him yet since the little boy wasn't now showing any signs of tiredness. Maybe, he would prefer being more embraced.
As carefully as he could, he moved him that way, he was now actually laying onto him. His little body against his whole chest. Toothless held one of his hands still underneath his head, while another one held onto underneath his body, in a way of balancing it safely. There were touches of little palms just on his chest, giving him a cozy feeling inside his heart. Just then, he noticed the face of Hiccup wasn't free, placed against his shoulder. At first, he stressed, moved his arms in a will to change his position of the head, but then seeing as he placed his cheek against it comfortably, slowly closing his eyes, he remained still.
Toothless rocked his whole body, unnecessary, as Hiccup within the moment, embraced with warmness, fell asleep in his arms. He smiled brightly at a little boy. Who would have thought the such a small thing would bring him such happiness? Despite everything he just heard today, it wasn't important, at least for now. He, comfortably now, closed his eyes, enjoying the moment with his little bundle. Then, he whispered to Hiccup, as well as to himself. "Don't worry, buddy. I'm going to help you somehow, no matter what. I promise."
